DJ Yella: Eazy E Wasn't a Natural Rapper, He Had to Be Coached

- www.vladtv.com - DJ Yella sat down with VladTV and discussed how Eazy E's break out single "Boyz-n-the-Hood" evolved after East Coast group HBO turned down the song.
The famed producer revealed that despite Ice Cube being a rapper and writing the track, Dr. Dre wanted Eazy, who was never a rapper, to perform the song. Yella explained that no one in the group ever asked why Cube didn't do the song, which went on to be a major success.
During the sit-down DJ Yella also spoke about Jerry Heller helping them get a deal with Priority Records, why he wasn't on the "N.W.A. and the Posse" album cover, and more which you can hear about in the above clip - Zábava
Yella reaction to No Vaseline in the movie was hilarious. RIP Eazy-E
***** loool the movie is great Ice Cube son did a get job.
Is common in the movie?
Frank Wave what?
wasn't no vaseline a shot to common?
I wasn't sure they were gonna play that song during the movie and I was so happy they did.
Ice cube didn't rap "boyz in the hood lyrics" because at the time he was in the group CIA, and back then people didn't do features or join multiple groups. It was considered disrespectful.
It still is to this day. I mean look at how much drama was made by Camila Cabello doing solo stuff while in Fifth Harmony. But I am glad Cube had some loyalty to C.I.A!
Him and jinx was in the group
It still disrespectful if you do that to this day.
Wow you're smart
So you know better than DJ Yella
"Me? I'm not a rapper. There's your rapper."

😂😂 Rip
+Dymez so many classic lines in SOC
LMFAOOOO. That line was cute.
He sounded nervous as hell on that whole scene😂😂😂R.I.P
🤣🤣 I remember that in the movie🤣🤣

Eazy E wasn't a rapper, he was a gangsta.
Trap God He ain’t no G, none of them were.
@@user-kh1lx5yw5d But he was the only crip in NWA besides MC Ren who had some loose affiliations with the crips. But Eazy E was probably more concerned with his hustle than petty gang-banging bullshit which paid off and got his ass out of the ghetto. Plus he was more into funk music than hip hop. I'm 100% sure of that. He was the oldest member in NWA. He was born in 1964. He would've been a teenager when funk music reached it's peak popularity and he has mentioned listening to George Clinton, Bootsy Collins, Ohio Players etc in his raps.
@@i.ronnick9683 Yella was older (born in 61). Eazy wasn't from the ghetto either- none of them was. And @666 is right, no member of NWA was a G- Eazy and Ren were crips but didn't really gangbang, Ren would tell you that himself.
@@tlig Good info. I'm willing to believe that Eazy wasn't into doing gang loyalty or all that. Yella was born in December 1967 though.
@@tlig Eazy already said he wasn't a banger. He dealt drugs.
...but Eazy had one of the best Voices in Hip Hop History...

***** ..so
***** you missed the point competely but whatever bruh
+Spida Jackson LOL, singing?
***** that's not irelevant at all to the pont tho...
ice cube - cia
Dre and yella - wcwc
Easy e - selling dope
MC Ren - unknown rapper
The guy selling dope brought them together which is crazy lol
MC Ren was gangbangin when he got signed by Eazy
@@mikejazz9400 He wasnt gangbanging he was performing in piru clubs without getting noticed so he never banged a day in his life, just like the rest of them. They were all just kids who liked to party and were running with the wrecking cru, in the compton nightclub scene. Thats were eazy-e soaked up game from alonzo how to make money selling music, so eazy-e is like baby alonzo. He was no drug dealer. Why should a super gangster drug dealer sell tapes at a flea market when there are millions of dollars in the street selling free base in the 80s. Eazy was a square just like the rest of them
@@bigbubba4184 STFU outta town azz nigga!! Leave L.A. sh!t to L.A. niggaz that know. Keep it pushin
@@bigbubba4184 so eazy e made 250k from what?
Eazy-E rapped the song because the song was talkin about him. He had a 64. That was his reality.
John Miles the song wasn’t ment for him to sing
@@christiancardenas7694 Treu. That's why he rapped.
John Miles yea but cube wrote it
@@luilui9853 Yea, but they wanted Eazy to rap it, so he did.
Eazy E at first had a Suzuki Samurai. After a while he had an impala 64. So no the song was not for him
No NWA=no eminem snoop death row after math g unit all the Friday movies bone thugs n harmony
The NWA family tree has spread all over hip hop

Not true, there always was others in the hood. In fact equals who gang banged all had hood gangsta raps. I mean again where did a lot of y'all grow up at? The thing with nwa is, the quality of their reality raps were better, but best believe others was doing it yell
BOX5 BASTARD Know one in the general public knows who those people are. N.W.A was the first one's to hit hard on the underground and then mainstream.
jack Johnson so don't mean it don't exist. Cats claim real and how they hood and gangsta and what not but refuse top acknowledge trill shit. If that's the case we should never doubt the white man when he claims shit that folk know he stole yell
+NBAgladiator no 2pac? pac was already risin in 94 he was only in deathrow cause suge bailed him out in exchange for a contract
also yella seems to be the coolest old hip hop guy ever.
I know Eazy wasn't the best rapper at all but he was fearless he was a true G still love his music
Vlad said he never even heard the word "motherfucker" until NWA? It's not like that's a word only used in the hood
Remember this was over two decades ago. Wasn't really used much outside the hood back then.
+nmorgan24 c'mon Bruh this was the late 80's early 90's, I've seen hella movies from the 70's where they used that word. Vlad is originally from another country and raised in the suburbs tho so I guess that's probably it
nmorgan24 scarface? Huh stop it, Vlad and these fuck boys on here must have been shielded yell
+Cory Smith hahahah, he meant in a hip hop/ rap track!!!
+Cory Smith It wasn't a word used that often in movies and films back in those days. It was quite shocking/confronting to hear it over and over again.
To those who mentioned Scarface: Scarface was an anomaly back then. It stood out because of its excessive language and violence.
DJ Yella looks like Smokey Robinson's little brother.
looz, he does
lol smokey looks younger
Ups Mosley facts my boy facts
Ups Mosley lmaoooooo he really do
Lol yes
I like how hella doesn't care to hide anything embarrassing in his past he's got some mad balls much respect for him😎👌
*Yella*
Eazy was the epitome of.....but I'm not a rapper
😂😂
Devante Andrews 😂😂😂
Nice one😂😂
Yella seems like a cool dude. Doesn't try to impress but is down to earth himself. Kudos!
I feel like mc ren was really underrated in rap music
They didn't mention Arabian prince was a member of nwa and was even on the straight outta Compton album cover
+Al Blacka I remember seeing a music video he did just a couple years ago. I think he left cause his music was too different from what the others were doing. He was still making that 80's electro hip hop. He had one song on the album Something To Dance To. I think he's still making that type of music
+Jacks Johnson I think it was that he diden't get enough money
@@Paperboy03 no he left before they made it big
He left because he wasn't making the money he should have been so he went back to his solo project
@@nikkisandz119 There's a video where he explains it's because the money wasn't showing.
That's not even surprising. He don't sound like a natural rapper.
ok?
Yes he does. On the original version, not the one that's on Eazy duz it (rerecorded), he sounds like an amateur.
+Keir Bo Why?
how is he suppose to sound natural nwa literally made a new genre of rap
Why is it so hard for Vlad to understand not all rappers write their shit, even back then...
eazy just had the image and swag
image is everything in hip hop
Vlad needs to interview MC Ren next. I want him to let the world know that he also contributed as writer on a lot of the NWA material.
Vlad need to go find HBO...
Bryan Easterday Just tried too search for them on youtube couldn't find anything from them lol.
Lincoln Speering Same, they gotta empty page on Spotify though lol
Bryan Easterday I don't think they made any music that would be available anywhere.
+Teammm look them up on CZcams and you'll see 😂
no, i want an interview with og 2tone, his motivational speech on the bus is the best, we need to hear some more
You can tell Eazy wasn't a rapper on Boyz N the hood. He wasn't even rapping on that track if you listen, he was talking. He got better with time tho.
Eazy-E when they asked him to rap the song - "But I'm not a rapper)
history lesson with professor Yella
Ice cube didn't perform the song cause he was already in another group.
+Ramon Obey ofcourse
Nawwwww Yall some wanna be fans bru
The group was CIA...
I thought the reason was cause he was in college
+King Amaru96 man shut up, Ice Cube was in a crew called CIA at the time
A lot of producer and artist relationships blossom when people help.
Sometimes the artist might not have it AT FIRST, but with training you can have the next icon on your hands :)
This was a great interview. I learned a lot from Yella. Legendary group.
Vlad trying to act confused like its NOT common knowledge that Cube wrote roughly 97% of NWA lyrics...K
Ren and Cube
The Legacy of Gaming and the D.O.C.
They all wrote stuff but yeah Cube probably wrote more than everyone else
it don't matter if eazy wrote one word on boy in the hood nobody else would sound half as good as him doing that song
Cessil Laessig Ice cube
Facts.
nah, tbh i think my voice sounds better on it, im not just saying that either, i actually recorded my own version of boyz in the hood, i didnt change any lyrics or the beat, just put my voice over it,
True.
@@gee2greedy NAH!!
Ice Cube said on another interview that he couldn't sing the song because he belonged to another music group at the time and was normal for him to write songs for other people to sing.
CIA (Cru In Action) with Ice Cube, Sir Jinx, and Kid Disaster (who later went by K-Dee)
For someone who learned to rap almost overnight, he held his own.
I sometimes see people list Eazy-E in their "top 5" emcees. I know they are just doing this because he died or because the new movie came out. But Eazy-E was not a good rapper. What made Eazy-E legendary was he helped architect a new style to the game -- gangsta rap. He was a smart businessman. His look is iconic and recognizable in Hip Hop culture, with the Jheri curl, locs, and Compton hat. But Eazy-E was not a "dope rapper." He was a Crip who sold drugs and wanted to make money selling music. People wrote lyrics for him and had to teach him how to rhyme on beat. You could tell by his style that he wasn't a natural, and was coached to do it a certain way.
DiverseLA He was smooth. He helped get gangster rap out there, either by choice or by force.
He's the Allen Iverson of the rap game basically
+Nico Ortiz I don't know about that. Allen Iverson was a natural gifted basketball player.
+Missy T no, he did not have an amazing flow. he literally had zero flow
yes. his flow was terrible. he was rarely on beat and when he was it was doctored. eazy was known for his business sense and his voice. thats it
Great interview, he's an articulate guy and it's great to hear his opinion on the old school situation.
I'm glad Yella discussed Eazy E and him not being a rapper. Finally getting the truth out here.
Finally? People have known that for a long time
not a secret. at all.
Ice Cube has done the same thing...
Im just saying to get it out there on the CZcams space for modern day listeners of NWA and Eazy
You couldn't tell by listening to eazy he wasn't a rapper ? He struggled to ride the beat almost every song lol no shocker to me ..
Awesome interview! Drop the entire interview............
Eazy definitely had an amazing voice for Hip Hop music. But I definitely can't say he was one of the "greatest emcees of all time." I mean, Cube wrote his verses for him, and he was really only in it because of his voice and street cred. Still, no doubting he had an amazing voice.
I heard that the main reason why he became a rapper is because Cube was still in another group, and back then you couldn't be on two crews at the same time.
Cube: angry
Eazy: gangsta
Ren: focused on something
Dre: really tall
Yella: seems like your typical nice old grandpa
The D.O.C is from Dallas. True legend
They had Eazy E rap because he put up the money to help them get started.
Nai Mor That's not true
he had the image to match what they were saying. .imo
Bro its just movie . Some of its real some of its not true at all. U cant believe dre
TheKJProductionz well there a many people to vouch for the validity of the movie...so it would be kind of hard to fabricate. Also Suge is still here to call Dre on certain things....
Dre had Eazy E rap on Boyz N Tha Hood bc Ice Cube was in another group with Dre's cousin Jinx call CIA...
Candyman's one hit was Knockin the Boots, produced by Johnny J, who would then go on to produce for Tupac
Dope interview - big up Vlad & crew! One comment: 'Gangsta Gangsta' was not on the NWA and the Posse album - but Dopeman was. Also the original vinyl album said c/p 1987 Ruthless Records on the back, and was manufactured and distributed by Macola Records. The 1989 CD Version was done by Ruthless/Priority and had 'A Bitch Iz A Bitch' by NWA on there replacing 'Scream' by Rappinstine. My boy had the album back in the days and I thought it was just the hardest & illest sh*t ever. however I couldn't afford my own copy. Plus it was hard to find back in Europe around that time even if I would have had the cash. Now I buy it everytime I see it almost like a trophy, I have the vinyl, the CD and also a sealed copy of the original cassette lol! SOC is an epic movie! Peace
I guess it's safe to say DJ Yella didn't have any input on the Movie.
Yella was the Music Consultant for the movie. He said it in another Vlad interview a few days ago plus he was coaching the actor that played him in the movie.
I think he said he did on another video
Of course he did, he was an advisor.. It was part of his life..
Yup! all he wanted was the pussy. I knew the focus would be cube and dre😒
+BlackJohnnyCage he's not gonna have input on events that don't involve him. it's a biography
he is just so adorable lol a really likable guy
does he keep the headphones on just so everyone knows he's a dj?
randallross420
Looks like he's in a studio.
@@jumpingeezus5080 Nope, that's vlad's studio. I think he's sponsored by Beats.
lol this is exactly what I tought and I was like "why i am thinking it?"
It was he's identity. Just like Nakano Miku from anime Go toubun no hanayome. Best Girl❤️

They got early radio play where I lived in the south because the station out here played underground rap music after 9:00 and the DJ would dub the song to tape and cut out profanity so we got to here the album version before the radio version came out. I remember first time hearing it I thought the signal was causing the blank spots so I kept trying to adjust the antenna until I realized it was curse words that were missing
Yella seems incredibly honest and down to earth in this interview, never seen him speak before and he's got a kind voice and demeanor
Yo Vlad thanks for asking the question on why didn't just Ice Cube rapped the BoyzN the Hood song. I've been asking myself that question for years
Damn... Eazy E is literally the king of gangsta rap.
Not really cause Ice Cube wrote his raps
Blu 186 Ye but cube wasnt as real as easy.. Easy was a real g doing exactly what he was rappin about.. just because of that i dont care who wrote it. He never claimed to be some kinda lyricist.
I dont believe none of these rappers today who claim they bang.
LegendInThaMakin you can't be the king of rap if everything you spit is someone else's rap. that's like saying Milli Vanilli are the kings of R&B
LegendInThaMakin stop it eazy was a 5'4 laid back dude that was just making money in the streets
he wasnt no gangsta putting in work
Flippa Jackson Bruh.. you cant move dope on a block like compton in the late 80s and have the freshest shit without running into problems.
he seems like a real humble guy. one thing i didnt like about the movie was they only looked at eazy, dre, and cubes success. Even tho dj yella and mc ren might not have the glory that there other group members do today they still deserved reconition. no matter if they achieved the same success or not after nwa as they had when they were nwa.
The scene in the movie where he had to be coached by dre is the best,i never wouldve imagined him not being a natural at it his voice is so unique
Yella is just a good dude. You can tell, just from a couple of these interview segments, that he's a laid back, easy-going, cool-ass dude.
Yella seems like such a dope dude
Wasn't the reason Cube didn't rap Boyz-n-the-Hood because he was still tied up with his former group that he was in at the time?
Candyman had a song called Knockin Boots back in 1990.
DJ Yella still got on his headphones!! Lol
I would LOVE to hear this on his next album : Ice Cube - Boyz n the Hood . The writer of the lyrics , who actually is One of the greatest rappers, that raps his own song.
Eazy was the boyz in the hood so that's why dre felt he should rap it. He embodied everything that cube wrote that's what I think.
I love to hear these stories. History is alive.
Cube says the lyrics was about eazy e so he didn't the rap.
The fact that it took him two days to learn how to rap seems pretty natural to me.
i just love how he just sat back and watched XD
why can't i find music from this group called hbo? are they still making music?
There's always a yella funny nigga in the group
lol!

One of my favorite easy stories he had a great voice and was a cool guy
My main question is why wasn't the Boyz In The Hood track the main theme song for Boyz In The Hood movie?
Dre, Iv Got Something To Say! - Ice Cube
Why everybody keep acting like Eazy E's solo album never came out. The way I remember it was NWA & the posse, Eazy Does it...which created all the hype for NWA, and then straight outta compton. Maybe it came out in a different order on the west coast but that is how it came out down south.
anttheartist in the east too
The dude that played yella in Straight Outta Compton did a good job
Hard to believe that was over 30 years ago
Its funny to me when Vlad asked why they asked Eazy rap "Boyz N Tha Hood" Instead of Cube & also because he wasn't a rapper(never thought this question myself before honestly), but if you listen to the lyrics it fits Eazy perfect because he was actually living that life, he was drug dealing & riding around in a 64 & etc so it made alot of Sense for him to do the song instead of Cube.
I alway wondered why cube didn't rap boyz n the hood
Yella's Reaction to No Vaseline in the movie was funny as hell ''I thought It was Funny''
Vlad interview Arsenio hall, like he's the one that interviewed eazy e too back then,
Yella is so underrated 💯
Yella seems like a dude who minds his own buisness, dude keps saying ”i never asked”
dj yella might be might favorite interviewee on this vladtv ship
im surprised some people didnt know this until the movie came out
cube needs to record Boyz in the hood in his voice
to be honest i dont think it would sound as good in his voice but maybe im wrong
It wouldn't be that good to listen to. Eazy had that voice.
Cube didnt do boyz in da hood because he was with C.I.A. another group
such an honest genuine person
this is the question I always wanted to know... now I know cube wrote the lyrics and dre produced the beat for "the boyz n the hood"... my question is who did all of the scratching in the song?
DJ Yella is Stephen Curry's real father.
Why do they have different last names?
@@Parasopher umm... cuz he's joking dumbass
lol this dude doesn't know a lot of details, but apparently he was getting the most ussy in the NWA movie….. o_o

Eazy definitely had a unique voice and style.

I guess O'Shea and his baby and Dre were too good to come on VladTV. I wanted you to interview those three, Vladimir. It's all good though. Yella is coo'. What if Ice Cube did that song instead well never know because Eazy became a rapping legend
