  • Brief video on checking oil on a Can-Am Spyder while we check out the new Buffalo Bills stadium. (Rob Wright, who goes by The Punisher 33 on CZcams, asked if I would give an update on the new stadium.)
    This channel chronicles my adventures using a 2023 Can-Am Spyder RT Limited as my only conveyance. We’ll go on a great adventures as well as mundane errands. We’ll also discuss accessories and gear for the Can-Am Spyder.

    Thanks for all the videos! It’s a 9 mile minimum, it’s not just the engine oil but that same oil is in the transmission. I’ve done the 10 minute idle thing and have found 2 minutes of idle gives the same reading. Crazy those kanuks but I love them.

    It is a rather particular process to check the oil, but I do it the way it is recommended. I usually check it on a day I've gone for a ride, I don't do that 9 mile thing. Cheers Chris!

    G'day Chris. My 2015 Spyder F3 has exactly the same procedure. Ride for at least 15km (9 miles). Park on a level surface. Idle for 10 minutes.
    The only possible reason i can think of for the 10 minute idle is, when riding, the higher the revs, the faster the oil pump, the more oil is sprayed all over vital engine parts (and all over the engine). Allowing the engine to idle for 10 minutes would give time for any excess oil still trapped in the engine to return to the tank to give you a more accurate level. I'm no engineer, but that would be my reasoning for it.
    A wet sump engine is easy because gravity returns all the oil to the sump once you stop the engine, but a dry sump needs to keep the engine running so the oil pump can return all the oil back to the holding tank for an accurate reading. Just my thoughts anyway. Hope this helps. Cheers.

    So wet sump versus dry sump. A two wheeler is a wet sump, thereby the oil is the sump/gear box all the time where you can see it through a sight glass to check the level, and most non-competition bikes ((inc. Spyders) are a wet clutch requiring oil to work. Now a dry sump is where the oil is contained remotely from the engine using a scavenger system i.e. racing engines etc. But Spyders are different, they are a dry sump when running using a recirculating system. When you stop and leave your Spyder sitting for a while all the oil drains back into the sump/gear box for start up. So when checking the oil, bring it up to normal operating temperature to circulate the oil, turn off and wait only a few minutes (this allows the bubbles in the oil to settle down), pull the dip stick, wipe clean, screw it fully back , and then pull out to check your level.

      Congrats 🎉 on your new ride. I'm looking to get mine in about a month. Can't wait. Have watched several videos and have learned so much that when I talked to the salesman, he stated I knew more about the spyder than he did. I'm a Nana, and at 72, my first motorcycle/ 3 wheeler. I've never riden before. It will be perfect for me.

    I have a 2016 Spyder RTL, I change my own oil and to keep things simple, I replace the drained oil with the same amount of new oil, which amounts to a little over 5 quarts. The oil change kits include about 5 and a half quarts of oil plus the filter and o rings for the drainage plugs. So far, this has worked out just fine, and the engine doesn’t use any oil anyway. I change the oil more frequently than the factory suggests, which in any case is at least once per year, even if low mileage has occurred. Oil is cheaper than an engine tear down for sure.

    I ride mind for 12 to 14 miles which gets me to town. Then check it. Did this on my 13 and now 22. No issues

    Agree, checking the oil is a hassle, just like checking the air in the rear tire. I change the oil, dump in 5 quarts, one and done. I figure if the oil gets low, Spyder nanny is gonna tell me. Of course, if I see oil drips, I'll do a look around and take it to the dealer. 2020 RT Ltd.

    I am not very much for American football either, nor the football Yall call soccer lol.
    As a funny side note. My grandfather was born by Swedish homesteaders in NW Kansas in the 1890s. Grew up in a ranch. The wife in the neighbors ranch has a brother, when he visited he taught all the kids including my grandma how to shoot a pistol. My grandma got his first revolver at age 5. Neighbours brothers name was William Cody but was nicknamed Buffalo Bill Cody.
    Oil change. I may be wrong but the manual may very well be a bad translation from French. It’s probably that taken into account a Quebec winter and how long time it would take to warm up the engine and have all oil move. OR, 10 min idling.
    The idling is stupid. In Europe most countries have laws against more than 2 minutes and even more often 1 minute of Idling. Reasons are the more excessive exhausts, health problems that can occur, as well as idling really wears on an engine compared to actually driving.
    If Can-Am really cared about the environment they should not recommend idling for 10 minutes.

      I stopped watching years ago when they started Kneeling and disrespecting our great country. Then I decided to watch Cleveland. had a local playing. I watched a guy rip the helmet off of QB and hit him over the head with it. Never again will I watch NFL.

      @@SpyderMinimalist Yes it's a funny story. The kids would trap animals, including rattlers, then skin them sending the skins to Sears for credit and then buy guns. His mom found it when he was 8 and was going to take it away. His brother defended him and told her he had it for 3 years, so he got to keep it.

    Just check at the end of your ride….works for me. I maybe wrong but I thought a model or two of the bmw bikes are very similar.

    I believe the 9 mile ride is just to heat the engine and or oil up to operating temp. The 10 minute idle allows the oil to level out to the bottom of the engine and sump. I suspect if checked right after driving it would show a bit low and the same if cold. Like you would think there could be some kind of simpler process

      Part of the 9 mile ride could also be that many engineers and mechanics do not want you to “short run” an engine or just start it to idle and not drive it then. It does not burn off moisture inside the engine which can cause damage over time. Smoke talks about this topic at length and quotes the same minimum distance of 9 miles any time you start the bike.

    Hey, would you be able to do a quick video of how to check the coolant level. I have a 2023 spyder but unsure how to remove the front service cover. I don't want to break it.

      I wouldn’t check my own coolant level, so I would not be a good vlogger to make that video. There are others more capable than me, vlogger who specialize in servicing the Spyder.

      @SpyderMinimalist hey , just went out to mine to take another look. After reading the manual it's super easy to check and or top up with the correct coolant. Which is again is in the manual on page 41. So there is a piece of plastic just below the front lights. There is a middle section. Just grab that and a gentle pull up and the whole thing just pops out . So easy asscess to the coolant tank. If you did need to top up. Mine was OK as its brand new. You would need a fullel and pipe and slowly top up. Hopefully that might help you a wee bit. And it's super easy to place the plastic section back as its only being held by to parts of the plastic.

    Like others I have always consided the two oil change check routines two different things. Either a long ride OR a 10 minute idle. And I have never seen a difference doing the oil change either way.

    I plan on checking my oil the proper way to ensure it’s full, then after it cools before my next ride, re-check it. Note the level on the dipstick and then you’ll know where it should be when it’s cold. Also, for your safety, talking with your hands while making a video does nothing to clarify your message.

    Hey Chris, my new 23 rt is in the shop with 5k on it. Started getting a noise on the left side got worse while riding the Natchez parkway. Dropped off at the dealership has metal in the oil now. Oil was changed at 3k with Lamonster oil. Have you heard of anyone else with this issue. They are lookat the HCM right now.

    Hmmm, is it really madness... or perhaps genius 🤔🙄 It is definitely unusual and inconvenient. But let's pretend we're engineers at BRP. We're designing a new and unusual 3 wheel motorcycle. The DIrector of R&D calls all of us, all the design engineers, into a room and gives us a challenge to come up with a process of checking the oil to get a reliable and consistent result, no matter where in the world, no matter what time day or night, no matter what month in the year, and no matter what the outside ambient temperature is, but a process that virtually has the same result when checking the oil. And finally, we geeky engineers come up with the idea that the oil needs to be checked at pretty much the exact same temperature within 2 minutes of shutting off the engine.
    The 9-mile ride gets the oil pumped throughout the engine and transmission. The10-minutee idle will get the engine to its specific target operating temperature. You probably have noticed your fan kicks on and off when you're idling in stop and go traffic, or at a long red light. When idling for 10 minutes, the fan will at some point kick in. The fan coming on and off is keeping the temperature at the target operating level, no matter what the ambient temperature is. Keep in mind, checking the oil in Phoenix Arizona in July, could mean the cold engine oil could be 110 degrees, while checking a cold engine in Fargo North Dakota in March, the engine oil could be below 32 degrees. BRP's oil checking method kinda sucks, I agree... but it's also kinda smart. 😳☺️
    But what do I know, I'm a retired bean counter 🤪

      All good points. I wonder why the other motorcycle manufacturers don’t have similar procedures? I wonder if perhaps the Can-Am engineers know something the folks at Honda or Suzuki don’t, or vice versa.

      @SpyderMinimalist I was only guessing. I don't have a clue why the procedure for Spyders is so unusual, but BRP must have their reasons, and they are certainly not a company that tries to copy other companies 😁

    Checking the oil is frustrating, how bout watching a Bill's playoff game ...
