  • Here's why I went with the Atomos Ninja V paired with the Lumix GH5 in 2020, even with the Canon R5 and Sony A7Siii being released. I consistently get great images from the GH5 with the internal recording but paired with the Atomos Ninja V, I can shoot ProRES 4K60 in 10bit 422.

We almost jumped ship as well. Actually pre-ordered the R6, but then backed out until they get things figured out a bit more with firmware updates. But, the main reason I think we stayed with the GH5 was because of you. Changing our color profile to natural almost eliminated 100% of our skintone issues and made grading a cinch. And exposing at 65% for skintones using zebra stripes has really improved our picture quality. It feels like we have a whole new camera!

I've been sticking with the GH5 (~2Yrs)/Metabones/NinjaV(~1Yr). I do a lot of non-profit pro bono stuff. I can't see watering myself down with a better camera that won't be able to actually do better for me than what I have. I have a hard enough time mixing my Canon 6D and GH5. I probably would do well to get another GH5 and just use the 6D for photos. I'm sure I won't be upgrading for at least a year. I'm still going to dream about BMPCC's, A7SIII and GH6. probably a silly question Caleb (and friends), forgiveness in advance. Here's my currently dilemma: I've been shooting V-log l on the GH5 but using longgop (I know I'm not getting the best out of it) so since the last two weeks, I've purchased a v90 card and playing around with the real potential of V-log for the gh5. But soon, as I am saving, I'll be going for this Ninja V and recording ProRes so that my laptop isn't "fanning" every 5 mins.
so the question is, is it better for me to keep this super expensive v90 card or should I wait for the Ninja V and your setup with the Samsung external recorder and "capture" vlog 400mbps all-i that way? (I guess a pre-question to that is, is the ninja v capable of recording vlog all i 400mbps )
    thanks Caleb

I'm thinking it will be at least 6k 16:9 (I know no one talks about it, but the GH5 shoots 6k, it's just 3:2), I bet you it'll have RAW, recording over USB type C (hopefully), and idk what else, but that's my wish list lol

But next year I plan to add the Zcam E2 M4 and plan to record ProRes HQ on the z cam E2 M4 internally and ProRes HQ on the GH5 /Ninja V . So I can keep both cameras on ProRes and the Z cam can be my low light camera without dual iso. The gh5 has been a solid and reliable work horse so am happy to keep it as my A cam . I'm an Atomos fan boy. I bought two of the original Ninja Ones many years ago. I have a Ninja V and there is something I don't like, powering it. It has only one battery slot, although one giant NPF will power the unit for 3 hours, it not an elegant solution. With a large NPF battery it throws the balance of the camera off so it needs to be on a tripod. I am working on a solution where I have a dummy battery in the Ninja and a large USB power bank in my pocket.
