  • In this video I go over how setup the Atomos Ninja V monitor/external recorder with your Panasonic GH5 so that it's ready to record in 4K 60fps in 10 bit 422. I go over how to set up the camera, how to use the monitor and most importantly how to load your own LUTs onto the ninja v. All of the accessories found in this video will be linked below.

    Please see below notes for guidance on setting up 4k60p on GH5. Let me know if you are still having issues after following these steps
    --> For the GH5 to have access to 60p video, the camera must be in NTSC (59.94 frequency) mode.
    --> To get the GH5 to output a 10bit 4:2:2 4KUHD60p signal, you must do the following:
    ----- INTERNAL "Rec Quality" is set to 8Bit 4K 150M 60p. This setting can be found under the "Motion Picture Menu."
    ----- "HDMI Rec Output" is set to 10Bit 4:2:2. This setting can also be found under the "Motion Picture Menu."
    If either of these settings is not correct, the camera will not output the best quality 10Bit 4:2:2 4kUHD at 60p over HDMI. This is noted at the bottom of page 68 in the GH5 manual.
    Another important item needed is a high quality HDMI cable that is capable of handling the bandwidth of a 10Bit 4K60p signal. These cables are generally labeled "2.0a" (though not every 2.0a cable is made well enough to work properly).
    --> 4Kp60 compatible HDMI Cables are available from Atomos at retail partners, under item numbers ATOM4K60C5, and ATOM4K60C6.
    --> If the HDMI cable that is being used is not good enough, you will experience signal dropouts and breaks in your recording. An Intermittent connection between the camera and recorder when using a 4K60p output, is almost always caused by using a cable that can not handle the full signal bandwidth.
    You can find a setup video for the GH5 and an Atomos recorder at the following link: @t (Setup begins at @)
    Note: To keep all of the 10Bit data, you can record in the following codec formats:
    Apple ProRes HQ
    Apple ProRes 422
    Apple ProRes LT
    Avid DNxHR HQX (4k)
    Avid DNxHD 220x (HD)
    * (All other available Avid DNx Codecs are 8Bit, DNxHD 36 is a Proxy codec)
    Hope this helps.

    Hi. Many thanks for this. You're a brave man... I see you've a cage for the camera but not for the Ninja, and no cable locks. Both my G9 and Ninja Flame are 'caged' AND both cages have cable locks to protect the HDMI ports from being distorted/destroyed by the cable being inadvertently ripped out. Smallrig do a range of great value cages and HDMI cable locks, and no, I'm not affiliated in any way!
    Also, as the Flame is heavier, especially with dual batteries, I find the magic arm isn't strong enough to immobilise the Flame during movement due to too much leverage. I use a Uni-loc ballhead which I had lying around which is more robust and brings the monitor much closer to the camera which suits my style of handheld shooting. When on a tripod, then the magic arm will suffice.
    Definitely consider cages and cable locks! Keep up the good work!

    Great Video..Although I have a question. I am using a SONY AX100E Prosumer camcorder. It doesn't have any LOG profiles. Only standard profile is given to shoot the videos. So If I get Atmos Ninja V , can I shoot the Log profile, Although my video cam ( internally ) don't have one. And , can I use ProRes, eventhough my camera doesnt provide one. The same goes with 4K 60 as my camera only gives an option of 4K 25fps.

This was so weird , but finally able to figure it out. GH5 should update this its upcoming firmware (it wasted a lot of time for me). Hope it helps !

    Can you record 180fps ProRes from the GH5, or only 120fps? There see to be conflicting reports on that and I'd like to know before buying one.

    • @STUCKINLOVEFILMS
      @STUCKINLOVEFILMS  Před 5 lety

      You cannot from the Atomos, but you can from the GH5 internally. There is not a option to record above 60P on the Ninja V.

    • @SheldonCharron
      @SheldonCharron Před 5 lety

      Thanks. I actually found out from Atomos that you can record up to 120fps in 1080p. and up to 60p in 4k. That's fine though. At least I can record internally and playback on the ninja to see what we have. Thanks! @@STUCKINLOVEFILMS

      @@SheldonCharron you can't though do 120p either with the GH5 as it doesn't output a 120p signal, it outputs the selected overcrank base frame-rate.

    • @SheldonCharron
      @SheldonCharron Před 5 lety +1

      @@TheTechnoPilot Thanks. I already purchased and have been using a Ninja Inferno so got it figured. I have to make sure to record slow motion beyond 60p on the card and not the recorder. There are a few times I forgot and used the recorder and then wondered where my slow motion went. I kind of wish that the Atomos would autodetect that and trigger not allow you to use the onscreen record button when in higher frame rates.

    • @TheTechnoPilot
      @TheTechnoPilot Před 5 lety

      @@SheldonCharron yeah I wish the trigger would go reverse through to the GH5 as well!
      As far as I am aware currently the HDMI spec is limited to 60Hz which is why none of the Atomos units can shoot high-frame rate that aren't SDI and while the new overclocked out of spec HDMI standard they are developing for RAW allows this, that wouldn't help with what you describe since the GH5 doesn't give any indication over HDMI that it's in a overcrank mode.

    • @STUCKINLOVEFILMS
      @STUCKINLOVEFILMS  Před 5 lety

      Hey! Okay, before you go on any important shoot, so another test. Set up audio coming into the GH5, be sure to check the audio levels. Instead of plugging headphones into the GH5 to monitor the audio, definitely plug them into the recorder. Mess with the audio until you are getting a clean signal out of the Ninja headphone jack.

      @farmersuiticles Před 5 lety +2

      Audio Channels 1&2 are set to record Audio in from the Ninja V's Audio in jack. You need to change the settings in the Ninja V to set Audio tracks 1&2 to record camera. It isn't automatic.
