    For clarity, when I said "processed into HDR", I mean that it converts the way you monitor the image into the HDR monitoring configuration of your choosing. As far as I know there is no way to "bake in" the HDR conversion into the file, even though the manual says "record, preview and review using HDR". You can bake in LUTs, and I also think you can convert the signal coming out of the HDMI output port to be HDR, but it shouldn't affect your log recordings on the SSD--other than the fact that it removes options like "Legalize". Happy shooting! 🤓👍

      Appreciate the follow-up.
      I don't think using the Input->Camera Output->Log/HDR setting is WRONG, it can be pretty useful to monitor in Rec709 (or PQ if that's where you're headed), especially if you don't have a Log to Rec709 LUT (which was the case for the Z6 until not long ago). It doesn't modify the recorded file in any way (as far as I can tell) and at least with the current firmware, it records the same levels as turning Legalize off (as one would expect), ie full/data.
      That said, I understand the click appeal of the ... firmer... wording 😜

      Andrew Stewart I suppose it comes down to your current and future needs.. I bought a Ninja V for the monitoring and perhaps recording with current or future camera. If only for monitoring the Atomos Shinobi is an obvious choice. HDR monitoring in PQ for instance to see all of the image as you will likely grade is a great thing. I record prores on the Atomos Ninja V. I think it’s marginally better to grade log than my internal 150 mbps codec. I might be imagining it, but I think it’s true.. but if I pick up a new Nikon Z6 or other new camera system in 2020/2021 that may have ProResRaw... then my purchase will fully utilized. Currently? I think it’s better though with my computer/codec comparison my laptop handles both formats easily, but I know the external is capable of handling more grading in post.. even from an 8 bit source...... But yes.. for 8 bit source it’s biggest benefit is monitoring in HDR/PQ log etc. and perhaps the grading is better in post?

    • @aps5150
      @aps5150 Před 4 lety

      @@alexshdvideo Interesting; I was looking at the AndyCine A6 Plus which seems like a great value, but the Shinobi isn't that much more and presumably better in some way. As a hobbyist I definitely can't justify $650+ for the Ninja everyone loves. Thanks for the idea!

    Just got my new Ninja v last Thursday. I was saving for a lens, when my church asked if I could film the Sunday service on Friday. I have an A7III, so I knew there was a thirty minute time limit, so... I didn’t get the lens that’s not shipping yet and bought the Ninja v instead. Falling in love with this thing. Friday’s recording ran this morning at 10:30 am AZ time. Without a hitch. I was originally nervous because when I tried playing the clip from the hard drive, I got a delay after 5 seconds of play. I set it to record prores lt. so after pulling into a fcpx project and compiling to mp4 it was completely in sync. So that was good. Why In this day and age that Atomos doesn’t have a forum on its site is beyond me. If I could have done a search, it would have put my brain at ease. Thanks for everything by the way. I don’t miss a one...;-)

I went to the garage to find where I did throw my ninja v because it was really so bad with log files, you explained it better than the Atomos's CEO on his video, I was getting a 709 file out of the Ninja and I didn't understand why.... Yes because we have been told to toggle that freaki*** HDR/Log button and select camera brand and gamma bla bla bla but at the end no more log flexibility in post at all! • @Interceptor121
    @Interceptor121 Před 3 lety

    Your videos are very polished so hats off. A few comments about the settings as I have recently got the Ninja V and had to go an build fixes for all the bugs it has. First your Atomos range fix is not a good idea to monitor with that. The Ninja works fine and so do the exposure tools (except zebras that are off in all modes). The range fix is only necessary in FCP and must be the first effect applied or the whole editing is compromised. The legal option is not good as it flattens the signal also for your monitoring LUTs which may already perform a legal range conversion. So actually with the Panasonic it is more effective to activate the standard V709 in monitoring so that the false colour and other tools work correctly. Applying this LUT is also essential in HDR or ProRes RAW because AtomHDR just scales the display brightness, the display itself is just a plain rec709 gamut 10 bits screen with 10.5 stops vs the 9.97 of a rec709 editing monitor so nothing special. When you try and monitor log in PQ because the monitor lacks the dynamic range and wants to scale it pushes the middle grey really low and the display becomes dim which is exactly the opposite of what you want when you are shooting a landscape scene that has a lot of DR. So AtomosHDR is best skipped altogether and so is the legalise option as long as you use resolve or your LUT as step 1 of your edit. As you said the best option is to leave the monitor in rec709 if you are shooting log or rec709 and adjust the legal levels in your camera. For cameras that output HLG obviously set it like that and you will that the screen is bright because in that case the camera puts middle grey where it needs to be and also adjusts the white point

    I did find a difference when importing clips into Final Cut, depending what settings I dial on the Atomos. With matching setting to my Sony A6600, HLG3 and BT2020, the clips correctly show as BT 2020 in the Inspector. Otherwise they show as 1-1-1... and they do look different in the timeline depending what settings I choose in the Camera Output page in the Ninja.

    finding your channel has been one of the best things for me on youtube, your delivery is understandable for a non techy like me, yet packed with so much useful info, i end up going down the rabbit hole for deeper understanding. im really getting a lot out of your content, thanks a ton! please don't stop! haha... im running an a7iii with the ninja v, until i can really grasp all the nuances that arise with the camera and certain accessories, I've opted to shoot XAVC S HD. one thing i have noticed is that while in the RECORD options of the ninja v menu, my RECORD FORMAT states im shooting at HDp59.94 although the a7iii is set to 24p50. while experimenting, i noticed that if i switch the a7iii to XAVC S 4K the ninja v recognizes the change in format and its represented in the menu. is this normal? i tried searching for content related to this, if i overlooked it i apologize. your input would be highly valued. thanks again!

      i also wanted to mention that the INPUT menu also states that the signal from the HDMI input is HD59.94 while the a7iii is set to 24p50. so its consistent across the ninja v that the incoming signal is recognized as 60p.
