I would pick it up bc of those nostalgic reasons. Having played Kirby on Super Nintendo and DS. Sometimes you just want a cute little to play to breeze through your day in a positive way.

I played almost the entire game by myself and I still had a blast. But I hadn’t played a kirby game since Super Star Ultra so maybe that’s the reason I didn’t get bored with it. I could tell that the game was too short and easier than any kirby game I’ve played before, but the base gameplay was so fun that it didn’t matter to me.
Same here I haven't played since whatever one I played on gba (don't remember) and it looks really fun, but every review I find is from someone who is a huge Kirby fan so they constantly bash it :(

I actually played this by myself and since I struggle with many things it's relaxing and calming and I loved this game since not many games offer this feeling I had with Star Allies. Sure I would have liked different modes of difficulty in the game, but from what I played I thought it was great and fun. I would definitely like a 3D Kirby game for the next game, it needs a new formula as the current one is just becoming stale.
I fell like this game was great but way to short. (But also theres a rental store near me that happens to have games and beat it in a day so for like the $3 I spent to rent it it is a 10/10)

Im so happy people like you are honest. I am so happy I bought Bayonetta 1 & 2 (haven't played the originals) and I got it instead of Kirby. I would have been severly disappointed. Can't thank you enough.

The Soul Melter mode is definitely a challenge.
You say there isn't challenge, but you don't even talk about True Arena or Guest Star ??? Go! mode. That's just as important as the main story game, because the secret bosses have a huge impact on this game and Kirby's lore. And in those two modes, the gameplay changes quite a bit. Not to mention all the free DLC support HAL is giving to this game, that makes it a good 8/10 for me.

The arena and guest allies are still pretty easy but I do agree that the DLC is awesome!
I have kids, one of which is 5. This game has been worth every penny. There aren't many games you can play with a 5 year old without them becoming frustrated. This Kirby game is a fantastic way for us to spend time together having fun. There are thousands of games for skilled players, glad there's a few like Kirby for kids age 4 to 7.
I guess as a solution to make everyone happy Nintendo could have included a hard mode for older more skilled players
Yeah, I think this looks like a great game for adults to play with their young kids, or kids to play with their friends. I'd still pick up something like Mario Kart over $60 Kirby game any day. There is definitely an audience for this game, but still something I'd get in the bargain bin personally.

I kinda agreee with you, but there is not much for skilled players. Almost everything is for mediocre players that wanted everything handed to them then rather finding things out for themself.
But yes, this game and Kirby in general is great to play with your kids.

Great review as always. It is exactly what I’m looking for. I don’t want to die. I didn’t grow up playing video games, and platformers are a nightmare for me. I want to like them, but I just. Don’t. Get. Them. I can never figure out how to play them without dying every three seconds. . I love how charming this game looks, and I think this might just be my speed to learn how to finally play these games. It is on sale for Black Friday 2021. You and Kim helped me decide. Thx. 🙂

It should be noted that 6 hours is for story mode, and that's coming from an experienced gamer. Younger kids can easily take longer. Mileage from the game as a whole will vary depending on how much stuff you want to do. You aren't even going to even see the highest Arena difficulty unless you beat Guest Star mode and the second highest Arena difficulty (not sure if you have to beat level 5 difficulty to unlock that one or not). Plus completing every celebration puzzle. And if you're *REALLY* a completionist (or crazy) you can attempt to beat Guest Star mode and all Arena difficulties with *EVERY HELPER.* That's usually what I want out of my Kirby games, so I'm pretty pleased with this one.

I got a switch specifically for Kirby Star Allies because i'm such a huge Kirby fan. It was definitely worth it on my opinion, but it was too easy even for a kirby game; however, I did have fun with it both single player and multi player, and it might just be my favorite Kirby game.

I'm new to your channel and I just got to say I love your honesty and enthusiasm :) You're gonna be the guy I hit up for Switch stuff. With Kirby, I agree 100%! I also would give it a 6/10 with my single playthrough. My brother and I both got it and I really regret that since only one of us should have gotten it and then just played together. I enjoyed it and it was cutesy, but def not worth 60 bucks. I think to get some replay-ability, I will play story mode with my brother and my mom together since it should be easy enough for her.

I love you Wood, you're so funny. I def felt the same way about Kirby. I enjoyed the nostalgia but I needed some sort of a challenge. Each level is like the same thing. Wish I would've waited for it to go down in price. But I enjoy playing with my husband.
Switch games are 90$+ in Canada with taxes, I have bought every major release for the switch until now but I am going to wait until this one drops in price as Kirby games usually do. I bought a snes off ebay recently and a sd2nes and I'm tempted to try out the Kirby games now as I have never played the snes ones and I keep hearing that they are much better than star allies!

as a hardcore ( and blind) kirby fa boy ive spent +60 plus hours on it and has beaten it to 100% completion ill give it a 9/10. its way to easy, but easily the kirby game ve spent most time on
Creative dude and honest and fair!! Love it!!! Co-op with my girlfriend is the only valid reason to have kirby but at the same time nostalgia got me by a chokehold so could i really give it up
Boss mode is a little bit challenging
You forgot to mention the two minigames which are a huge reason why I might keep the game rather than sell it. They are quite simple but really fun to play with friends, much like the minigames in Kirby 64 that I used to play so much with my friends as a kid.

I pretty much agree with everything you said in this video.
My feelings on this game are weird: I'm glad that I bought it, and I had a good time playing it. Yet, I wouldn't necessarily recommend that others buy it.
You did not talk about the ultimate choice.....that was brutal!
If you want a challenge, do the ultimate choice mode after you beat the game.
My two big gripes are the length and the difficulty level. So basically the same as you. Even the 3ds games were longer than this, with longer stages and the like, and just more to do. I also wanted more of an extra mode like in Return to Dreamland, not the hour long version of the story playing as the friends.
I got on release because I'm a bit of a fan of the Kirby series, and just for a minor note, I've mainly played this alone. I did feel as though it was a bit short, but then I saw the guest star mode and the Ultimate choice and had fun with that. The DLC characters also help make this a bit more replayable for me.
My only issues were that I felt the guest star mode was a little too long, especially for certain characters with limited functions. And I would've liked to have seen the return of the Kirby Fighters mode from Triple Deluxe.
Also if you want more of a challenge, I would recommend playing the guest star mode without allies and/or the boost hearts.
I don't regret my purchase, but I thought this was a good and fair review.

I got this game over the holidays, and I think, just based on the single player adventure, I still had a lot of fun playing solo. And I definitely feel the game is worth it when doing absolutely everything the game has to offer. But I can agree the game probably wouldn't have felt worth a full 60 from the main game alone. But with all the bonus modes, which I would argue have always been a big part of Kirby games, from Super Star Ultra (and the original Super Star, obviously) having a bunch of smaller campaigns, where it even labeled itself as 8 games in 1. And then the recent Wii and 3DS games still had some sub games to them, and in the case of Triple Deluxe and Robobot, had truncated versions of the main game with Dedede and Meta Knight as the playable character instead.
So yeah, even back at launch, if you're a big Kirby fan (like me) the game would've been worth it because the main game and side modes are basically exactly what I look for in Kirby. But if it was judged just for the main story mode, then yeah, I can see why people were disappointed. The DLC helped make it more of a complete package, but I think, for what I value in a Kirby game, even the base game would've been worth 60 dollars... if I hadn't waited for it for Christmas because I didn't have any money when Star Allies dropped and I had Detective Pikachu and Crash N. Sane Trilogy I wanted to try first as I've played plenty of Kirby, but both those other games were unique, new experiences for me.
...But I digress, I like Kirby.
Is it worth 60$? Nah but I'm a big Kirby fan so I brought it anyways.

Played the demo solo, both easy and hard levels and... It was very hard to even finish the easy level 'cause it felt SOOO boring! Gotta try replaying it with my gf since the few "not only mobile gamers" I have either play on ps4, xbox one and/or steam and any of them are willing to buy a Nintendo Switch :P
You should try Ultimate Choice: Soul Melter difficulty. It doesn't recover the easy difficulty of the main game, but it does indeed give you the challenge you are looking for :)
This was the first game my almost 4 year old nephew tried to play on the switch. We downloaded the demo. He was actually doing a good job too. I guess it really is a little too easy. I kinda want to buy it though to get him started playing video games. I really don't want to spend $60 on it though.

Ah always loved Kirby... I pre-ordered this as a result and have absolutely zero regrets. Its a good break from the hard games like Monster Hunter or high involvement games like Fallout 4. Thanks, Wood.

I've played the demo and my biggest problem was: There's waaaaay too much going on on the screen. Most of the time, I didn't even know where I was or what I was doing, because there were 4 chars jumping/attacking and all that... Am I the only one with this issue?

Thanks for the review Wood. Based off the demo and what I seen so far, I kinda had the feeling the game was not for me and would be too easy and too short. I just do not see myself dumping $60 on this. Maybe in the $20 or less bin, but with the name "Kirby" I will be surprised how long it will take to get there or even get there.
You do know that every switch game is 60 bucks even sa New soup port that has -50% innovation on its original release also this game has gotten 10 Characters 4 Hard levels and 8 Super bosses added with free dlc!

I do wish there was more challenge. All the good things of kirby were here except the challenge. A shame. Good to see an addition, hopefully they keep kirby alive and maybe next round make it hard!
The combining ability mechanic could have had a lot of depth and it could have made for some good puzzles.
