Weather is so critical. For a 2-week trip to the West Coast of Ireland I packed a waterproof (not water resistant) raincoat but I only brought one wool sweater. Not wanting to buy another sweater, I wore my one wool sweater every day and I smelled bad by the end of two weeks. No drycleaners and no way to dry the sweater if I washed and blocked it. And I needed to wear it every day under my coat. Subsequent years, I left the wool sweater at home and packed a washable full zip vest and full zip long sleeve jacket; and I wore vest and jacket under my raincoat. Did I mention that both trips were the last week in June and the first week in July. The temperatures rarely got above 10C/50F and there were no taxi cabs or local buses and it rained frequently. The second year, a long neck scarf absorbed a lot of rain that would have run down my back. A fleece lined nylon rain hat with strong under-chin tied kept my head warm and dry.
Mascara failed embarrassingly the first year and waterproof mascara failed moderately the second year. Waterproof eyeliner and lip stain were all I used. One sunscreen solid stick was enough for rainy days with scattered sunshine (I like Neutrogena Mineral). Hand cream and talcum powder were luxurious at night.
An umbrella broke beyond repair within the first five minutes of the first trip. And I never saw anyone else carrying an umbrella after that. Blue jeans absorbed rain below the raincoat hem and wicked the moisture to the waist. I was often wet through my underpants. Second year I brought ONLY washable quick-dry clothing. Electricity is more expensive there and even if you find a laundry, they will only dry your clothes for a set time. If you have heavy jeans you will have to hang them up to dry the rest of the way in your room. Even the B&Bs were line drying their sheets.
A pebble textured 100% poly midi-skirt was a good idea. Tank tops were good layering pieces that gave an extra layer of warmth and allowed me to wear over-shirts a few times. Solid color tops allowed me to combine with multi colored printed, embroidered or woven plaid scarves. And it was nice to change my scarf when people were only seeing my raincoat.
Teva sandals were always wet and secure. Without heel closures, flipflops or mules would have slid off my feet walking on all the hills. Washable shoes are helpful given all the animal waste on country roads. Wet leather strappy sandals would have fallen apart . The second year I brought old sneakers for the country roads and binned them in Ireland before my return flight. The old leather sneakers plus socks helped me retain warmth. They were more like water resistant hiking shoes. Even leather flats would have been a disaster because of the frequency and amount of rain because leather would get and stay wet. Crocks dried fast but you could feel every piece of gravel on the roads. And protecting feet in crowded pubs, on ferries, nature walks and on streets is critical on a walking holiday.
Everyone is casual. One skirt for two weeks was plenty. One pair of full length dress pants was enough. Capris bottoms had the best chance of staying dry and manure free. One pair of shorts was enough for two weeks. Some people wore quick-dry zip-off pants on warmer days. Whatever layers you left for the day with, you had to carry until you got back to your room. A large lightweight tote or day pack plus a small lightweight crossbody is great. Weight matters and so does hands-free capability.
I was sick and miserable (and stinky) my first trip but I had a good enough time to make nine more trips and pack a better capsule every time. I learned a lot from locals and travelers who did not have access to cars. I took pictures of everything I packed and kept notes on what I used the most to help me plan the next trip.
    Logistics tips:
💦 Some rural towns only have one taxi and they may not be available unless you book way in advance. Renting a car does not make sense if your destinations do not offer parking or if you visit islands.
💦 Ferries will set your bags on deck in the rain. Pack all your belongings in waterproof bags inside your suitcases.
💦 Know the local weather for your locations for the weeks you visit. Check how the weather is trending for that area for the weeks leading up to your visit. Be ready for everything.

When I take my son to visit his father in Florida I ship our clothes. Two carry ones would cost $80. It costs $50 to ship and there is nothing like the freedom of not lugging a suitcase. My son is disabled and this is so worth it. Shipping back is always more because I’ll thrift my summer wardrobe while there. You’d be surprised how many sweaters are in Florida though.

One of the reasons this video is so unique and helpful is because Diana demonstrates the wisdom of NOT obsessing about our vacation wardrobe. We can dress in comfortable basics as a blank canvas and then use scarves, belts and jewelry to dramatize the look. We will look stylish and put together with much less effort and stress. Unless you’re at the beach or hiking in backcountry the total time, when a very casual look is functional, we can dress both stylishly and comfortably in most environments. Yes, I want to be comfortable when I travel, but I also want a unique look, a la Milan, not like just another American tourist in a tee shirt and shorts.

Wonderful video, Diana! I love all your videos, but this one is especially timely, cause I'm going on a trip across the country in a couple of weeks. Although I'll be staying with a friend, so will have access to washer/dryer, it still makes sense to take as little clothing as possible. I had already chosen the tops and bottoms I wanted, as all the tops go with at least 2 of the bottoms, to mix and match, but now I see I don't even need to bring that much. Next task: pare the tops and bottoms down, maybe add a wrap dress, and of course, way more scarves to the mix! THANK YOU SO MUCH! You're really great! You have a wonderful eye and fantastic taste, and although I'm not in agreement will everything you say matches, I still enjoy your fun and funky style!

Some day, I would like to try limiting myself to 5 items for 2 weeks, and using the accessories approach to vary things. When you travel, nobody knows you anyway, so I don't mind wearing the same things over and over, as long as they look great and feel comfortable. I appreciated the black and brown approach too. It’s already a great tip if there are local clothing items that tourists like to purchase; like Aloha shirts and dresses in Hawaii. My husband and I got really nice well made ones in the goodwill on Oahu. Some people also have found its great to buy the ‘wrong’ clothes for the climate in a thrift store in a place you are visiting , if you have the space to transport them. I was just thinking, you could do this and make a kind of vacation without traveling - or even if you have things like kid commitments or work tying you home and it isn't a staycation, you can add that playful attitude to "unblah" things! Just give yourself a week using a capsule wardrobe just as if you WERE travelling. Might be a fun change and challenge! Pack the capsule wardrobe in a carryon and get creative with it throughout the week!... Isnt there an old saying that a change can be as good as a rest? Sometimes I need a vacation (or vacation mindset?) when there is no vacation in the budget or schedule. I like this idea!

The bloros I wear over the neautral tanks....I like Chico brand they wear and wear for years...I have some over a decade old and wear them regularly...they are workhorses and the fabroc is not too thin these never stretch out with time.
I also like nice knee length knit skirts these pack.up small and I prefer swishy ones they look best on my body. I have a navy, black and brown ones. Usually I just bring one sometimes two.
This year I spent some money on skme new in store items. From AnnTAYLOR i bought three pr of lovely nermudas perfect length for me beige, navy, and white, I will isually just pack one pr or two if it is a place calling for Bermudas one to wear and the other to wash and be drying.

I live in tropical Antigua,,Guatemala the other seasons year rou d Spring weather THIS is the rainy season so Im enjoying outfpor classical concert, films, the museum, and restaurant dates with friends....totally different from my lifestyle the rest of the year except the restaurants with friemds. I do wear the bermudas here on hot days with ine of the tanks and a cropped blazer or bolero jacket. Always in solid basic colors. I wear a real Ecuadoran Panama hat (10 yrs old and worn daily in the tropics its my signature piece so I DONT get any skin cancaers)with a large antique hatpin. Chicago is windy! EVERYONE strangers on buses on the street salespeople compliment the hatpin it IS noticeable. It is a conversation starter which is nice.It segways nicely into a discussion about where I live (the tropical sun being the reason for the hat) and people are often quite curious what it is like. I have some lovely converstions on bus trips. And people I see in the neighborhood remember me. I leave an impression as an oddity but I hope a pleasant one.
I did also buy a couple more vests before they go entirely out of style. At home I wear colorful boho peasant tops and skirts...it fits where I live and the vests are a nice look with the peasant tops...unexpected. Here I am wearing thr fests under a couple of cropped glazers I bought new. i know one day thr vests and the cropped blazers I will find jn a our paca mercados...clothing exported from the USA and sold for $3 to 5 usually. But I didnt want to wait and I wanted specific colors and found them in this city new. Mymbohomwardrone is flamboyant and I look like a tropical bird in them...they would be TOO odd on a woman my age here int he city I have yet to see one woman my age here wearing any brightly patterned boho and I was here last year too.
I love your sensibility and have snt your videps to several firnes ...so glad I found you you are UNIQUE a treasured quality in a sea of Zara type haul bloggers...your videos always are a delight that make me smile...you arent afraid to be individual and chic

We learned how carry-on only is the way to go for us. We beat the crowds, zipping through customs, first in line at the car rental agency and on the road before anyone else is even through customs. Love neutral basics and like you, add jewelry, scarves etc for different looks for various activities and occasions.

Jolly useful. I must say that I wouldn't take sleeveless tank tops, but they are easily replaced. It depends where you are going, too. Spring and Autumn in Paris, London, Scotland and Ireland for example can be hot or cold. The suggestion about the scarves and jewellery is excellent.

Another thing to do with a scarf: Tie it onto a purse/bag and just let it hang! That's done a lot in Italy, for example. Would not work with a very large scarf, more for smaller/medium I would say. Your bird scarf would be lovely draped on a purse.

This was great! So different from other capsule wardrobe videos and you’ve got me thinking how I can have my basic clothing and how to make it fun and have variety with accessories. Also, I tend to buy jewellery and accessories as my souvenirs when travelling - so this is a great excuse to buy and wear my memories as I travel. ✨

Just found your channel and subscribed. Love, love, love accessories!!! My scarf collection probably rivals yours. My favorite souvenir from anywhere I travel is a scarf from a thrift shop to add to my collection. It brings joy for the memory of my experience, adds posh to my outfit, and provides a conversation starter from the compliments I receive.
I look forward to catching up on your other videos. Thank you for a different take on a capsule wardrobe for travel.

I love the scarves and accessories ideas. I love scarves. I happen to be traveling in the San Francisco area with walks in the city , museum, ferry ride to Angel Island, and a walk around a small seaside town. I watched the temps to gauge what I packed, and yes to packing cubes! I have more shirts than I need, but one thing I did differently this time was choose one gold jewelry look and one silver one and change to which works better with the outfit each day. I love not having to think about what jewelry to wear beyond gold? or silver? One pair of very comfortable sandals (Naot) and sneakers for trails has worked just fine for this trip. Now to work on the shirts. 😂 Thanks for your fun and informative videos!

You have great flare and a clever approach that makes so much sense! I'm a big bold jewelry gal and you gave me some ideas for using necklaces I've sidelined since the small-jewelry trend. Scarves make me feel awkward, but your stylings make me want to try again. I'm not a dress wearer, so I'd simulate that wrap dress w a black skirt and tailored top. I also loce belts and have a big collection!

Be aware that depending on where you are traveling, jewelry can make you a target. Another idea for necklaces are craft necklaces made of crocheted thread - colorful and light weight.

This idea is similar to my cousin and his wife when they went on beach holidays, flying Ryan Air, a cheap airline company in UK - who charge for every little extra pound. They would go with a really small nylon holdall each - and then buy everything else they needed at the other end.
