He is broken. But not running from it.

Song: "Flip the switch, you're keeping me in the dark"
Ricky: "So did I just hear three distinct light switch clicks?"
My most favourite episode so far in the whole series. 😂
One my favorite moments ever when they go to that storage unit with all the people after morty flipped the three switches and then flips another one while looking for a shovel and rick goes “what was that?”
@@mtn7836 my greatest question, why did he flip a switch while getting a shovel?
I know the joke kind of dies, but I would think Rick of all people would be smart enough to put that switch in a more secure place.

The thing is even though one of them is a clone, and he doesn't know, he still loves both of them which add to that characterization they have added to Rick. He still does alot for Beth now, and maybe it's to make up for all of it.

@@jayjayx5x1 To be fair... we don't know if that one was his "original" daughter at all. (Evil Morty theory)
Season 5 is going to be either really depressing, chaotic, serious.
Edit: In order, it has been serious chaotic and now depressing just from the first 3 episodes.

Both of them
It was sad to see Rick's face when Beth said " i want you to decide "
Even the smartest man in the universe Rick still having a rought time to choose which decision is the right one
That's one of the problems of being really smart, logically he can be a dick about it as usual but morally is another thing entirely, that kinda shows he does care but still does not have the courage to make the choice I guess
The fact Beth even had to suggest that really shows his disconnected they are. She didn't even know if he wants her or not.

Beth's laugh that I find cute for some reason.
My god... So I'm not the only one who thinks that???
I would say it's more of a squeal 😄
they no longer need rick, but rick needs them
Rick doesn’t “need” anyone. There are infinite Smith families remember?
@@tonkinjeezus6626 So why he's sad and all instead of going to another dimension and to another family? For a moment I thought that, in the end, he would just open a portal and go away, but...he just stayed there alone in his garage, right after discovering he is the black sheep of the family now.
@@tonkinjeezus6626 Isn't it at this point kinda clear that despite Ricks behavior, he does give a f*ck about his family...not jerry...but time and time again, against what he states, he does care. Heck he even comfronts toxic rick about it and uses it to make him comply.
Yeah no he doesn't
@@tonkinjeezus6626 that's what he says and makes everyone believes but really hes gotten attached to the version of his family we see in this episode I think he purposely mixed up the Beth's and erased his memory so he doesnt have to destroy either of them
I like that through the series Rick becomes more human even though he doesn’t want to admit it. He tried avoiding attachments but now he needs his family but they don’t need him. They really flipped his character in just four seasons.
Getting old does that to you. Grandparents always seem more aware of their human attachments.
he was even happy he didnt die which contrasts him in season 2 or 3
Yeah, the worst part is that since Rick has meta-narrative powers, this could all be a visage and the audience shouldn't trust him, thereby making him truly alone if he does actually feel like this

the fact that it changes from "if you go then i'm going now" to "if you go then i'm NOT going now" is rly heartbreaking.... I don't care that ppl say this is just a funny stupid show... this shit is deep and packed w meaning
EXACTLY. THANK YOU DUDE LIKE THE SCENE WHERE MORTY LEAVES PLANETINA AND SOBS IN BETHS ARMS HEARTBROKEN
OR THE NEW SEASON 7 SCENE AT THE END OF THE SPAGHETTI PLANET EPISODE WHERE IT SHOWS THE OLD MANS LIFE FLASH BEFORE HIS EYES AS HE OFFS HIMSELF LIKE I BE SOBBING
I feel like the saddest part is that a part of Rick want his daughter to have a great adventure and meaningful life, and another part of him wants Beth to stay with him despite how he claims he doesn't care his family, so he wasn't able to decide. Yet his daughters only see him as an irresponsible piece of s**t.
They aren't as mutually exclusive as you'd think. Rick ends up being a good character that's easy to love AND hate because he's human, he has highs and lows, and he can love his family and still be an irresponsible piece of shit that treats them horribly. This show has a lot of great moments that are in the moral right and moral wrong, but it excels at spending most of its time in the sea of grey, and doing it well. This show is great at showing that people aren't inherently good or inherently bad, they're inherently people, and everyone has their mix of good and bad through the choices that they make. Rick & Morty does a great job of showing that what matters is trying to do your best by caring, because life gives you opportunities to change and to care. Rick's only flaw is that he thinks he's above caring because he can and has done it all, seen it all. And to me, that's the saddest part.
I think that is call fatherhood
Thays not even Rick's real daughter. Remember that they left the other universe because morty fudged it up with that love potion. His real daughter is still there
@@dangermanv6133 true but spend enough time with another version of a loved one and you'll still love them just as much. Because, regardless that person is still who they were before and that connection exists.
He is just unable to know what he wants. This is why he is happy to have multiple realities : no need to choose, ever.
Amazing finale, only question: “Where was Mr.Poopybutthole to send us off to the next season?”
Right? I bawl my eyes out and fucking Jerry comes in with the invisible garbage truck

Immediately searched this song afterwards and always feel punches in my guts, yet this song makes me feel super human simply for getting this emotional.
It was an incredible finale. Putting on hold the funny or evil Morty moment just to put in perspective Rick’s feelings
Yep, it was good.
This season was about losing control, about how Rick thought that he could control his family because he was the smartest man in the world, but now that his family knows who he is, he loses them.
This season is sad af, every single episode is about losing control over shit.
Remember one of the lines from the “do you feel it?” song where rick almost offs himself? It states that “We have no control!” and I think the writers on this show are expanding on that idea.
Wow I didn't realize that after watch the final eps of season 4
Thx man
Ricks intellect is a lot like money. He can do amazing things with it but what everyone really wants is to know he cares about them. I think secretly thats why they keep going back to Jerry. Yes Jerry is lame but there is no doubt Jerry loves his family.
In Vindicators 3, Rick literally lost control over his shit!
Seriously. I feel bad for the dude. And i dont know how to feel about beth(s) right now.
This season was about showing how human Rick really is. Every episode had someone question his decisions and show how affected he was by his choices. People are pushing back against Rick rather then letting him walk all over them, an that feeling of no control really shatters him. This season was so deep in very subtle ways and the ending was 10/10. Well done everyone involved!
I agree. I also think the producers felt they HAD to do a season like that soon to stop fans that ideolize Rick's behaviour to much. I was glad to see Rick's ways starting to have emotional consequences to himself
Great insight. I think it also shows that Rick was disconnected from human reality for a REALLY long time before reuniting with Beth. Long enough for himself to forget that he is still actually only human
Affected*
Yup! In ending of season 3, he was literally like a god fighting the president. But this time, he got beat up by a Zeus and can’t even beat someone using his toilet. He nearly died fighting Phoenix person.
@@s3cr3tpassword He can easily defeat him, if Rick is the smartest being then he should easily be able to, I think he didn't want to kill him cause PP is still his friend

For someone who claims "Nothing matters" all the time, he sure seemed to bait the Smith family with the idea of which Beth was the original as if it mattered, and it apparently mattered enough to him that he had to clean that memory from his head so it wouldn't haunt him. Rick talks a lot but he doesn't always say things he means nor mean things he says.
Well it's all a facade. I puts up a persona of an unfeeling ghost and an uncaring god, but deep down, he's got darkness. He's got loneliness, depression, co-dependence, and he's got regrets. It makes sense that the Rickiest Rick of all is also the most human.
“Do you feel it, do you feel it, do you feel it in your heart”
No man it wasn't Rickie enough
yeah that season ending song was 10/10
That song was sooo good.. It suits the show so well
Yeah I got those vibes too
moed al garny that was only the 3rd episode of season 2 brah
The sad part is that rick cares about his family but they can’t see it. The last part of the episode he is alone in the garage drinking, and I think we can all relate to being lonely...
That’s true its lonely. But this is necessary. Rick has used his intellect to justify his actions and he takes pride of his intellect as part of his ego. This was a reckoning for him to dig deep into himself. He regularly avoids therapy because he doesn’t want to admit that he has a problem and he doesn’t want to dig deep into that. But that specific scene where he admits he is a terrible father, broke him. And after trying to find an escape by bringing his friend back to life and PP tried to kill him made him stop and think. And that begins his self therapy... alcohol. We all will go through a phase where we think nothing is wrong with us until someone slaps the hard truth to us. It will lead us to our shadows. To our very own depths. But it is necessary for us to grow being human. That’s what Rick lacks, being human. His IQ is unmatched of course, but he lacks emotional intelligence to comprehend. And I hope one day he sees that.
Why you gotta call me out like that bro haha
It just reminded me of that tone when he tried to kill himself in the garage but he couldn’t do that either
That's not his family.
StatusBee maybe so but we have a saying in the Philippines “kahit bali-baliktarin mo ang mundo mo, pamilya mo pa rin sila” (no matter how many times you try to change the world, they’re still your family). Just like what Mullerornis said, you have to act on that love.
My brother really loved Rick n Morty, and I think about my brother alot with this song. I interpret many of these lines with my brothers struggle with his sickness and me dealing with his death. I listen to this song when I have an urge for a good cry. Miss you bro ❤️

@@mikuchuuu Lol, yooo! I hope fakehollywood appreciated the dark humor. @fakehollywood condolences.

Feeling it as the same with you.
Rick is no longer the god we have known him as, he's no longer indestructible, unsurpassable, unbeatable. He's told himself for too long he's in control of everything, he's finally becoming what he's been missing. A human.
Great synopsis
That's why his healthy part don't said that and just the toxic part screams that is a god.
Wait until next season.I want him to kick more ass.
I personally believe that he just attempts to grasp something he can control, but in the end understands that he controls nothing yet still tries. I feel that the toilet episode shows that even something as small as using his own washroom, is not in his control.
Aye
I hope they keep telling stories at their own pace like they're doing. I feel like they have the perfect combination between story and episodic focus. Each episode feels standalone but at the same time we get small bits of narrative that really furthers the plot itself. And when the big twists start hitting no one will expect it to happen, much like the evil morty twist.
Yes they were hoping to get to a more stand alone feel. Like the Simpsons. That the story was getting difficult to keep the hype and as super interesting and on point, and the demand is to high. So they are going for the stand alone episodes now.
Michael Casimer they’re stopping the story?
Community was written like this. You can watch so many episodes on their own. But you miss the overall character growth

My grandfather probably never ever saw a single episode of Rick&Morty but that single line from that song always reminds me of him, he was fighting to the very end but at some point he realised he want to stop and I remember thinking "well that's okay, it's all okay, if it hurts you, if you are tired then you are free to go". In another universe he lives and is proud of you and your loved ones.
Ngl thats my biggest fear i mean i‘d love to have kids in the future but admitting by yourself to be a terrible father must be the saddest and most depressing thing ever.
This song really fits the scene, and when Rick admits that he is a terrible father, that breaks me too. His character development is something that I am not ready for but I appreciate to see Rick finally have the other side of himself. Which proves that he is still human and loves his family , but when they finally figure everything out for themselves, they just don't need Rick anymore or look up to him. I know he's an asshole, but I still feel bad for him. I don't know why. I believe he would have good intentions but purposely make an asshole out of himself to avoid connection. I guess when his family finally ignores him, thats when he needed that connection again, but it's too late by then
lol I'd hope it fits, they wrote it :D :D Ryan Elder is the music director, he also wrote Snake Jazz among other songs this season.
I honestly thought it was some lost Smoosh/Chaos Chaos song but I guess they're not on great terms anymore the way the show ripped off their vibe for this song. I guess we'll see (their performance at the wrap party for season 3? looked pretty insulting, no one was listening or watching; people were too deep in conversation lol I'd pay money to see them live and I'd pay attention).
Dont be fooled by Rick's other sides. We all have seen how the ending of season 2 gets us all emotional when he gave up himself for his family and making us think he did just that. Everything changes when we found out the truth in season 3 lol. Its all for his own interest.
Rick's character has shown other sensitive & more empathetic sides or hints of them from the very first season. Recall when he tried to kill himself after Unity left him. The picture in Bird Person's house with Rick holding a baby Morty implying at one point he stayed with Beth & Jerry long enough to meet Morty as a baby & cherish him. On the episode where Evil Morty is introduced we also see a memory of Rick looking at a toddler walking baby Morty. Him trying desperately to get the president selfie for Morty. Even this season when he's left all alone on the toilet after his NOT-friend dies & he's left yet again alone.
The fandom has seen Rick's emotions & also his lack there of many many times. This season focuses more on his flaws & underlined how his narcissism begins to lose it's shine with respect to his family. However Rick will not change. We already have been told this by JR & DH. We were told this in the episodes as well. Look at the Citadel. The Ricks don't change but the Morty's do. Unity even said it herself - Rick can not change & because of this they bring out the worst in each other. He's a nihilist.
Finally I think you feel bad for Rick because he represents the best of us & the worst of us. Everyone can see a little bit of themselves in Rick especially when he shows us his vulnerability & loneliness. I think Rick will always be ambivalent & torn regarding his family & frankly I like him like that. I cannot imagine a show like Rick & Morty where they are literally destroying entire civilizations thriving in a healthy happy nurturing home environment. Because he is so utterly flawed & semi-invested it allows the show to progress & shock. It wouldn't be Rick & Morty without that.
The worst thing of the final episode was that he created a clone of his daughter to keep her by his side, when the other one lefts. It got me. What also got me was the episode in which Summer told many horrible things to Jerry.
Exactly my thoughts! I agree
And it's so sad

Same bro I was late too it too ur not the the only one i just started back in 2019 , how do u like it?
Damn. The song’s definitely about Beth no longer needing Rick in her life. We’ve known how important that relationship was to Beth throughout the series, but we’ve rarely seen how much it matters to Rick.

I think the ending to season four may be one of my favorite scenes ever. It is the most human we have ever seen Rick, and every single layer he puts ups seems to peel away with "Holy shit I'm a terrible father." And the fact that he goes towards the door but then makes an active decision that he's not ready to see the world again really shows that this is Rick at his purest.
Rick Had Expressed Emotions That He Tried To Keep Away, He Knew He Was A Terrible Father And Tried To Acknowledge It But Even When He Tried, He Could Never Hide His Deepest Regret
Even sadder that we know he didn’t get a chance to be much of a father to begin with even when he chose it….

Jerry is doing everything he can without rick making things "Easier"
Morty and Summer are just in general done with him.
Bird person now hates Rick, be it influenced or not, he killed Tammy.
Everyone rick has ever known is either abandoning him, or dying because of him.
Yah, hes going through a tough time, fighting his constant failures towards his family, friends, and self. He avoids his emotions to prevent this, and I feel like his poor mental state will continue to perpetuate in a downwards spiral. If I had to guess, season 5 might have large parts where Rick is fighting himself and trying correcting his wrongs, while the family goes about their daily lives and adventures without him, showing his loss of control and connection to others.
Don’t forget Mr.poopyhole
Yeah. A really crappy ending he in no way deserves.
@@SimplyARandomPerson thats why he hates the therapist so much. hes put up a persona of this bad ass genius who doesnt care about anything or anyone when in reality hes just supressed his real emotions. i think that was the whole point of the pickle rick episode, to show that rick wants to keep those emotions hidden

Everyone wants to be at some point. A lot of people just have the wrong idea of how it will turn out if they show their vulnerable side and that is is shameful to do so. This idea needs to be challenged in society. ;P
@@quinnholloway5400 But what about...............
Diane ( Beth's mom)
Somehow, In this episode, they managed to make rick seem more cowardly than Jerry. That’s actually some really good writing.
Rick used his genius to run from consequences, and he is constantly going to be reminded by Beth that it’s a stupid way to live your life. That makes this one of the best season finales I’ve ever seen. Great work team.
It’s literally impossible to make *anyone* to be more cowardly then Jerry
@@thesleepiesthead Rick has an array of gadgets and can do literally anything, yet he chooses to run away and hide. All Jerry had was an invisible garbage truck, and he decided to clean up the streets.
Beth was cloned and given two lives because she wouldn't make a choice. We know Rick's solution - give her both worlds and to avoid having to have the discussion.
Jerry would still, at this point, be trying to make a decision.
In reality neither are a good way to live life.
Morty also tried to use Rick's genius to avoid consequences, that's what the Vat of Acid "game save" device was about. He also told Rick that a life without consequences was pretty hollow.
Then last episode, we essentially had a re-cap of the family dynamic.
The we have this episode.
tbh I guess some of this is right but,
Me Awesome: what scene* did he do that in, because I don’t remember him running away and hiding
DP91: What makes you think I didn’t see the show??? I’ve seen 3 seasons and saw the last 5 episodes of s4
recoil: That doesn’t make any of them more cowardly then Jerry
But you do give up good points so I’m not saying everything you said was not a good example, but those things don’t make rick more cowardly then Jerry
No but please don’t try and start a argument with me.
Mr.Awesome I mean jerry only does it so he can have some sort of self-worth. He feels like a hero when he does it, that’s why: not because his moral values are actually pure.
This was the episode when Rick lost his only daughter forever cause he ran from making the hard choices in his life, exposing one of his biggest flaws in the most tragic way. Brightest mind in the universe, but so lonely. Wasn't expecting my heart to be tugged so hard...
Is anyone else obsessed with this song?
It's so sad to see ricks descent slowly show itself to him
In the last moments of the episode you see him grasp at everything and it slipping away
First he talks to Beth and Beth and they reject him
And then he reaches out to Morty and summer thinking they'll blindly agree with him like in season 1 and 2
And then they leave
He watches the memory and finds out he's not even a good father and rethinks going back to his family for dinner
He tries to compromise and say atleast he's a good friend until he sees how fucked up his own best friend is being hellbent on killing rick
Rick is now left with nobody to let him ignore the issues he can't say "atleast I have this" when he has nothing
And he realizes that. Tammy even predicts that he'll be a non threat when he's alone
So now Rick is at his lowest mentally and physically. The season 5 premiere must take advantage of this :)

That’s all Dan Harmon. We have him to thank for the emotional depth and Rolland for the sheer insanity.
Invisible garbage truck jerry
i agree, the story and the jokes are so meta too.
I just noticed, when in the vats, Beth and Clone Beth have arranged their arms differently, so even after the shuffle, you could still tell which one is which. If Rick really wants to find out, which one his real daughter is, he just needs to rewatch the mind blower. Don't know, whether that was intentional or whether I am just over interpreting something.
Honestly, I used to feel so sorry for Rick with his unhappiness and loneliness, but throughout the series it’s getting harder for me to sympathize with his loneliness considering how he does everything for it to be that way. He’s horrible to his family and pushed them away and doesn’t do anything to help himself. Like he’s just too consciously toxic and digging his own grave at this point
1. He has literally dug his own grave before.
2. There is, undoubtedly, a very good reason Rick keeps everyone (except this one Morty) at arm's length.
I have a sneaking suspicion that, if Evil Morty isn't his original Morty, then this Rick is the only thing left of his entire timeline/universe, which was destroyed because of something he did (either by carelessness, inattentiveness, etc.). I think he truly is inconsolable, knowing that _his_ family is forever gone, and that he is trying to make the most of it with _this_ family while, at the same time, trying his best to keep them safe... from himself and from those who have it out for him (and there are many).

Can anyone point out the “original” reality they cronenberg’d was his probably “original” Beth and he didn’t care about them. Really shows how much he’s grown since the past seasons.
Thats probably not original, too. He is gone for 20 years but have the memory with morty, which is 14 years old. That means it is not his original universe.
Roast Master 64 There’s a picture of rick with a baby Morty in bird persons house too.
He was never there in Mortys childhood yet has memories and pictures of him with a baby Morty.
We all know who that baby Morty is.....
None of the Beths in any universe is his original daughter. I personally believe the flashback shown when his brain was melting is what actually happened. His wife and daughter both died from the angry Rick that sent the bomb when Rick refused to leave his family. He either cloned both his wife and Beth, or just Beth as it's possible there wasn't enough DNA left of his wife to make a clone, as we see physical DNA is needed in the King Tommy episode. That would explain why he left, in order to protect clone Beth from being hurt by him since he was being targeted. Obviously he got captured after his return anyway, but it's possible he thought he had more experience to protect the family. And he was lonely, that much is obvious.
@@Incompetences original beth, was not ricks original beth, but it was morty's original beth.
morty thinks rick is his original, and is why rick looks out for him so much. (when he mentions to summer "if you want the rick that won't let you down, hes buried in the back yard")
perhaps the flashback was partially true, with the rick we follow being the only rick to reject the council, in favour of spending time with his family. thus putting a limit on the amount of multiverse ricks by becoming the "the rickest rick" the turning point of their "finite curve"

This ending easily tops the “I’ll be in the garage” scene from the Unity episode as the deepest, darkest scene in the series
@Carl The One the saddest moments of the show always happen in that damn garage, I swear.
@Carl The One I think its because this season stripped his facade down in its entirety. The attempted suicide was only a glimpse into his suffering.
This season started with him realizing he's lonely and friendless. (King of s***), he had to face that he honestly doesn't have the solution to everything (vat of acid episode where he technically never did figure out how to fulfill morty's request, he just used a method to get back at him for disrespecting him) It ended with him somewhat becoming the Jerry of the household, realizing that he officially doesn't have any respect from Morty, Summer is starting to drift away, and There are now two Beths that equally think of him as nothing, and after finally seeing himself in that video as the horrible person everyone else sees, he couldn't even fake it and join them in the kitchen. Thats why I think this is objectively sadder
@@AugustDoesStuff I mean to be fair 90 of the moments in the show happen in that damn garage. We've had entire episodes in the garage. At this point the smith families garage is basically the center of the rick and morty universe. Everything that ever happens can be traced back to the fucking garage
Jonathan Parker epic pointer. In some ways signing 70 episode gave the studio the opportunity for deep character developments, rather than “here’s an awesomely entertaining Sci-fi animation about the smartest man in the universe with many addictions”
Alexander Gerdt do you not know what character development is? We’re WAY past that
Rick doesn’t jump from reality to reality because he doesn’t care about his family. It’s because his family ends up never caring about him.
Nah it’s the squirrels
And he deserves it.
"Everyone I know
Goes away in the end" (Hurt - NIN)
No matter how many realities Rick goes to the end result is the same, he's ends up alone and broken (or dead).
Seeing the family move on without him reminds me of what was said in Bojack horsemen's finale.
"I think there are people that help you become the person you end up being, and you can be grateful for them, even if they were never meant to be in your life forever." (Diane - Bojack Horseman)
The typography animation is stunning! A lot of elements but still really harmonious with each other
You don't know how much I appreciate the little touch of animating the word DOWN as if it's being dragged down itself.
This is so “End of an ‘80s movie,” but I must admit, I enjoy it.
His family doesn’t need him anymore..but I think he needs them more than he cares to admit.
