    Thank you so very much for this video! I got this wonderful keyboard in the "free" bin at a garage sale yesterday, and one key was loose, thought it was broken. I was on your ebay page to buy a new key and saw your video link (that link doesn't work). Went on CZcams and watched your excellent tutorial. Took a little time, but I finally got my key back on thanks to your great instructions!

    I had a key sticking and needed to clean my K800. I was hesitant to remove a key without seeing how it snapped on first. You helped me be a bit more confident in repairing this somewhat expensive board, so thank you :)

    Earlier this week oj was spilled on my nice, illuminated K740 keyboard. I googled how to clean and came up with a few videos, but yours was the clearest on how to remove and re-seat the keys and clips, so I launched into cleaning. (not sure why others didn't find this helpful) I started with the furthest right keys, and about the third key, broke a clip. hmmmm. Next I googled replacement clips, and came up with your ebay store. Yea! Decent prices too. So, I kept going, using just clear water & Qtips and managed to clean the entire keypad and all the keys above it, the direction keys, the page up, down, delete, sound, light, keyboard 'enter', CTRL, etc. I only broke the keypad '+' clip (that taught me what moves not to make, and the difference in the direction of the clip hooks, so I was good) and one key, the "5", which lost a bracket, and may have just been a fluke. Anyway, I then ordered the replacements and was happy to get those for less than $10 including postage. I spent an entire afternoon, which in my time, probably cost me more than the $80 new keyboard would have cost. But I enjoyed the challenge! :) Thanks for your serious contributions to my sense of accomplishment and keeping a (now) perfectly good keyboard out of the landfill. :)

    Pro Tip: I have the wired Logitech illuminated and have been having a major issue with my "M" key for a while not, after removing it to get at some junk that had wedged underneath it and never got it to seat right afterwards. It would work but would stick a lot. Finally I had to pry it off because it was stuck down. Spent the last 30 minutes watching this video to no avail until I realized my issue was that the metallic ears ON the keyboard were out of shape and pried them up considerably. I was able to get the key back on with the hardware attached, holding it extended with a screwdriver. Slid right on as one piece, then used my screwdriver to push the metal ears back down to kind of clamp it in place. Now it works like new!

      ***** You're welcome. Glad to hear it worked out for someone else, too. Nothing more frustrating than not being able to get your keyboard working. I am mildly curious what key you had problems with, for absolutely no reason other than general curiosity.

    I have a Logitech Ultrathin Keyboard Cover and although the keys are different, the principles for key replacement are the same. By following these directions, I was able to replace the alt/option key that had gotten popped off. The key (pardon the pun) was to push back in the direction away from where it needed to snap -- just as was shown in this video. The orientation of my key covers was toward me and away from me (not left and right as shown in the video), but the idea was the same. Thank you very much for the video!

    On the Y-UY95 keyboard, I was having trouble pushing the key onto the clip after connecting the clip onto the keyboard and I thought I might break something by pushing blindly. So I did the following: (1) attached the right side of the key to the clip, (2) connected the clip to the keyboard as instructed in the video, except with the right side of the key already attached, (3) slid the key to the right and pushed down on the left side of the key. This worked well because I could see what I was doing for every step except the last one, and at that point the key was already in position.

  • @jstrike965
    @jstrike965 Před 12 lety

    One tip: Rather than pressing the key down trying to get it to catch, (@2:28) Once you have the scissor clip on, take your screwdriver and lift up on it a bit. Tilt the key to one side so it's perpendicular to the keyboard and you can easily see where clips go it. You slide one of the pins in sideways and then push the other pin in. Then it's just a matter of dropping the key down and setting the other two pins in place. (If I had a decent video recorder I'd do a video reply)

    UPDATE - the secret seems to be in making sure the two metal hooks on the keyboard have allow enough space under them so both edges of the plastic hinge can slide under the hooks. The hooks might get mashed down over the years from use, so you need to gently pry them back up with a small, flat-bladed screwdriver. That allows the hinge to both extend and flatten out fully. You can then hook the button onto the hinge's right side, as shown in the video, and be able to snap the left side into place fairly easily. Still, a total nightmare, and I strongly recommend that you NEVER remove these key caps. I know I will never do it again.
    02:06 - Actually, it is VERY easy to damage the clips on the underside of the key caps when you try to push them on, so do be very careful. I've broken the clips on four different key caps now, and I used gently pressure for all four. I've actually never had any luck getting the key caps back on, so beware. I'll give the "pull back slightly" trick a try to get my caps on

    BTW, if you want to help little jacks last even more, like mini USB and
    1/8" stereo, using a little cord liek that is nice, but just halfway
    there. You also need to secure that cord. Some times this means you can
    use something simple like rubber band etc. In this case if you are rough
    on jack you would hotglue the cord down to the KB. That is a great
    semi-permanent thing. Holds great but you can get it off and re-use the
    cord if you like. How securely the short cord/adapter fits is NOT an
    indication of how kindly it will treat the jack. Actually, it's kind
    inverse...meaning if it fits tight it will put more stress on the jack.
    But yes 90 degree little chord are great they do reduce 'bending' stress but not all kinds of stress placed on the jack. 1/8 stereo are the worst things ever, also because they are so common. Mini USB also a pain. Especially when there is plenty of room for normal USB like on this KB. It's just dumb.
    And even more protection yeah get a chord that goes bigger:
    miniUSB -to- USB, and 1/8 -to-1/4. The 1/4 help if your headphones etc can take or came with a screw-on 1/4 adapter. Those that only have plug-on type will see little help in going to 1/4/
    Mini USB and 1/8 (3.5mm) or even worse. 2.5mm are just incredibly poor choices
    that are chosen all the time anyway. They literally have NO STRAIN resistance.
    The are ONLY for chords with LITERALLY ZERO pulling. Yeah it's a huge epic fail of grand scale in the electronics world. It's as if the IDIOT designers and standard-makers expect you to handle you phone, headphones, etc with the chord and the chords not get pulled on at least some now and then. I'm sure we've all seen COUNTLESS examples of 1/8 FAIL. I've even had problems with HDMI normal size jack in my lappy. Nope, super big deal to fix if even possible. .
    I think HDMI can be OK, but the thickness of the jack collar should have a minimum standard and have no seam!. (they get loose). Similar problems with lappy power connectors.
    So that is why it is one my PET RANTS.
    There ARE engineer solutions for strain relief, even at such small scales.
    THEY JUST CAN"T BE BOTHERED TO INVENT IT AND STANDARDIZE IT.
    There are several sound concepts..relief, elasticity, and even sacrificial chord.
    (replace chord not jack!). Bad jacks can mean getting new phone/device, even when they cost hundreds of dollars! RIDICULOUS BUT TRUE. SAVE OUR JACKS.
    I"ve seen some very nice proprietary implementations of the concept, such as on
    the AT 50X headphones (and others) at the 2.5mm where chord connects to headphones (they have removable chords).

    Thanks for the instructions. Just a little damper: Despite what you claim on 2:10 (the clips on the back are very difficult to damage ...). One should be careful when pressing on the new key. When I did it, one of the transparent braces on the downside of the key broke ... exactly like the old key was broken - and I didn't even use much force. So I guess I order three more Bs to get better at this :-}

    • @Viridel648
      @Viridel648  Před 2 lety +1

      It's not just force, but perfect alignment, and I hate to say luck, but yeah, luck. I don't offer internal parts on this board like the circuit sheet or clip-plate, because removing, then re-attaching all ~105 keys/clips would inevitably result in more breakage than the repair would save. I only do internals on this board that don't involve the key plate - the main circuit board and replacement USB cables.

    I had a few keys not working because some stuff got under them. I pried them up a litt and hit with the canned air. they started working like new. I would love a video on how to open the case of the Y-UY95 so I could dry mine out. I spilled some water in it like a moron. Last time I did this I sealed it in a bag with some very large silica gel packs over night and it was fine in the morning. This time I think it got a lot more in it. Of course Logitech was no help at all. there is no manual showing which keys have the hidden screws under then or does it snap open if you keep prying after removing all the screws off the back.

    • @Viridel648
      @Viridel648  Před 9 lety

      Simple answer is don't. K740s are not meant to be taken apart. It's possible (of course), but very difficult to put back together cleanly. Just use the silica trick again, and give an extra day or two.

    • @Viridel648
      @Viridel648  Před 5 lety

      Sounds like a damaged (rubber) plunger - that's the part that both depresses with a little rod inside it to make the electrical contact to trigger the key, and also serves as the spring mechanism to bounce the key back up. If the plunger got torn or otherwise damaged, it would lose that spring-back capability. Fortunately it's an easy fix with the edge of a sharp knife to completely smooth the area, and some silicone adhesive with a replacement part (which I do have available on my listing).

  • @nackenbeisser

    I would have liked to see how the spacebar went back on. Mine stopped working so I popped it off.
    I put it back on but it sticks in the pressed position, I can lift it back up but it sticks again.
    Looking at the stuff inside, is it only the rubber thing that lifts it back up?
    As far as I can tell the white plastic just sits flat and doesn't bounce up, the metal bar again will just lie flat so it seems that rubber thing is doing all the work.
    As the key stopped working before I remove it is there any way to check if it is still functional?
    I've tried pressing the rubber thing and on the two plastic bits (gently) but space does not work.
    Is my keyboard busted?
    Sorry for the deluge of questions but your video is the only one featuring a logitech keyboard similar to mine.

    • @Viridel648
      @Viridel648  Před 7 lety

      Correct, it's the silicone plunger that creates the "spring". If that's torn or otherwise damaged, then that will certainly cause problems. As for whether it's broken or not, I can't really advise. The Clips may be misaligned or broken, ditto for the key-back brackets. If it's a mis-alignment then a potentially "easy" fix (easier on a K800 then K740, which needs a lot of patience). Ultimately I don't have enough information to give any conclusive answers, but hopefully I've guided you on the right path.

      The rubber plunger is a separate part that can be purchased. You scrape off the old one with a razor or knife, and attach the new one with a *small* bit of silicone.

      That would be a tricky task, as the plungers are 360' glued to the backing. There is a 'slight' gap between the baking and the silicone pad. Mayyyyybe if you cut up some rubbing alcohol pads, you can use a watch-repair flathead screwdriver and do a sweep. I'm not going to say I recommend it - but since the only alternative is a full tear-down....... damned if you do, damned if you don't.

      I don't see why not. It's just AA batteries. Obviously don't charge non-rechargables, but I can't think of any reason they wouldn't work.

      Sounds like either a bad circuit under the key, or the plunger was manufactured incorrectly. Has it done that since day 1, or a new problem. That would likely determine which part has the flaw.

    Referring to any Eneloop as 'China Generics' is ignorant. I'm not trying to be insulting, it's just the word for it. Sorry. I wont do a big explanation. More info on Eneloops is available than any other LSD Ni-MH. I'm more concerned with advising the use of very high mAh Ni-MH. They're pricier, and have a LOT fewer cycles. They're meant for high drain devices. You'll get your extra 25% or so battery life, but why?. I use my K800 on the 2nd highest bright setting and can't remember a time it's drained in less than 2 days. Usually it's longer. Factor in the awful cost:gain ratio and that a USB cable is usually an arms reach away, and....well, I'm happy to spend your money if you don't want it ;). I own dozens of batteries from your very good 'China generic' Eneloops, to the best there is. The ones I put in my K800? The ones it came with. This guy is the battery guru IMO. I'm posting the link in earnest - lygte-info.dk. Aside from my gripe, good video.

      You are certainly entitled to your opinion, in my experience with several of these boards, the Eneloop (which has come with many, but NOT all of them - the others have been EniTime) haven't last as long as my Duracells, which have been the same ones for at least 3 years, and I am on the board 12-16 hours a day - so I can't agree with your statement of "LOT fewer cycles" - for me, it's far more important to have more life. Also keep in mind that I did this video 5 years ago, and a lot has changed in the commonality and availability of chargers.

    • @LemonRush7777
      @LemonRush7777 Před 6 lety

      Here's why your Eneloops didn't last - you bought fake ones.

    • @FHL-Devils
      @FHL-Devils Před 6 lety

      Didn't buy them, they came with the boards, pre-installed, with the retaining sticker already over them. So if Logitech is buying fakes, that's on them.

    You're wrong. It is surprisingly easy to break the tiny clips on the back of the key by following your method of installation. Thanks for nothing.

    • @Viridel648
      @Viridel648  Před rokem

      As the video says, k740 brackets are very weak k800 brackets are quite strong. If you tried hard enough you can break anything but the chances of accidentally doing it on a k800 are not very high. I'm sorry if your experience is different, but after selling literally tens of thousands of these keys over almost 20 years I think I can speak as an authority on them.

    • @alanboreham6466
      @alanboreham6466 Před rokem

      @@Viridel648 I get that, and this video is pretty old, so I don't expect you to know it from memory. But I have the K740 keyboard, and at 2:06 you say "You're not gonna hurt the key. The keys are very robust. The clips on the back are very difficult to damage." I estimate that I used about the same force as you did in the demo, but my key broke. I don't have 2 weeks to wait for another key to be delivered, so now I'm going to buy a new keyboard. No hard feelings.

    te worst keyboard ever made by logitec. o in case you're wondering wy i can't type very well, it's not because i am one of tese lazy kids tat tese days doesn't use full words or boters capitalize words. no tis is because te keyboard i am currently using is te very one and only pos k800 tat is being reviewed by tis guy. first off, te left 'sift' key does not work. second, te key bewteen te 'g' and 'j' doesn't work. pretty sure you must ave figured out wic one tat is by now. tis is te tird k800 keyboard tat i ave ad fail in five years. all tree ave failed in different ways so i can confidently tell you tat tey are garbage. actually, te last eigt logitec eadsets tat i ave owned, all top end usb micropone eadsets ave all failed during te warranty period but were all a pain in te ass to get replaced because customer service at logitec is lousy.

    • @FHL-Devils
      @FHL-Devils Před 5 lety

      I've been using K800s for literally 15 years, and couldn't imagine anything else. I've broken two Clips in my life - one when I smacked a 2-week-old board on the underside of my desk, which was my inspiration for selling parts. The other was just a week ago when I had some crud stuck under the Ctrl, and in pressing the clip down, snapped a pin. 2 breaks in 15 years, by any measure, is pretty good in consumer electronics - especially something like a keyboard.
      What you're suffering with is most obviously a bad board. Maybe you bought a refurbished. Maybe you spilled water/pop/beer and shorted out the mat. Maybe it's just a bad board (it happens). But your statement of "te worst keyboard ever made by logitec" is absolutely and totally false. The K740 is good overall, but inferior to the K800 in every way, and K750 is a dumpster-fire of poor workmanship (yet with solar charging, is the most 'advanced' model - go figure). Basically you're saying "my board is bad, so they must all be terrible" - which is rather silly.
