I have chosen to live a very frugal life being very intentional about how I spend and manage my money. Frugality isn't about not spending money and being cheap, but it is about being intentional with your money and not wasting anything. Choosing to live a frugal life has allowed me to do many positive things in my life that have ultimately have made me live a rich life.
In this video, I share my life story of how frugality has allowed me to live a rich life full of many experiences without money ever holding me back.
Chapter 1: Being Frugal Gave My “Teenage Self” Direction
My teenage years were very difficult as I moved around quite a bit and didn't have much direction in life. I first discovered frugality when I was 16 as I had a dream to travel to Europe once I graduated high school. I used frugality as a tool to save a large sum of money to fund my dream trip. After two years of being frugal and saving money, I was able to go on my trip around Europe. By being frugal during that time in life, it enriched my life and gave me direction.
Chapter 2: Being Frugal Educated Me With No Strings Attached
Once I finished my trip around Europe, I discovered the importance of an education. I wanted to get an education; however, I did not want to take on student loan debt. At 19, I started to use frugality as my weapon to be able to pay for college tuition as it came. I took the frugal route and focused on saving money throughout college, which allowed me to graduate without student loan debt. By being frugal throughout college, it allowed me to get an education with no strings attached.
Chapter 3: Oh Yeah, In The Meantime I Traveled To 35 Countries
Many people might thing that being frugal isn't enough to afford to pay for college without taking on student loan debt; however, because I was frugal, I also saved money to travel the world during summer break in college. I worked at minimum wage jobs and saved money, which allowed me to travel to about 35 countries in a period of five years. By being frugal, it gave me life experiences that nobody can take away from me.
Chapter 4: And With No Financial Burdens, I Moved Abroad
The beauty of living a frugal life and paying for things as they come is that you do not have any financial burdens holding you back. You are able to live life as you wish. Since I did not take on any student loan debt or other types of debt, I didn't have to rush into making money after college and I moved abroad. By previously being frugal, I was allowed to seek the life I wanted and gain priceless life experiences.
Chapter 5: Being Frugal Has Given Me The Strength And Courage To Pave My Own Path In Life
Choosing to life a frugal life has allowed me to do many things. It has allowed me to view money as a tool, instead of fear money. Being frugal has given me the strength and courage to pursue the life I want and not let money hold me back. I continue to live a frugal life as I know it will keep enriching my life and give me wonderful experiences.

@@ElAgustin I had my Toyota Corolla for 13 years. Paid it off in 3, with low interest, and went 10 years with no car payments. I own a Chrysler 300 now, almost paid off, but it will NOT last as long as the Toyota did. Couldn’t pass up the awesome deal, and super low mileage on it. It was hard finding a used car here in the Las Vegas area that wasn’t used as a rental car. Looked everywhere, and took our time, and it paid off.

The key to frugality... gratitude
Remember that frugality is the direct opposite of what society wants you to be. So it takes focus and discipline to be frugal because life wants you to be wasteful and reckless. In fact, the economy depends on everyone being loose with their cash.. don't be the majority.
The Vanderbilts were billionaires frugal living but the children and grandchildren it seems they went on a spending spree they are not billionaires anymore 😢😢
You weren’t privileged. You were determined, hardworking, and laser focused on what you wanted to do with your life. Kudos to you.

My son attended community college and then transferred to a local 4 year college, all while working at a part-time job. He'll graduate debt free December 2023. However, during the first two years, he was harassed, bullied, and made fun of by his HS "friends" who went away to big universities. As a parent, that was gut-wrenching to watch. He actually lost friendship over attending a community college.

This is true you can go to college and pay cash and after you graduate be debt free. Single mom of two boys and a mortgage. I paid for my associates cash at my community college. I used my free time to study. Now I’m attending a university for my bachelors paying cash. Still using my free time to study. Some of my family members and friends say couldn’t live my type of life. But simple life style has helped me survive when I was a single mom. Now empty nest I’m still being frugal for my retirement. 🙌🏻🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Your take on life and frugality is so refreshing. Many podcasts etc focus on making tons of money, including working "side hustles, in hopes of becoming millionaires. I just want to live a simple and fulfilling life, doing the things I live, while taking care of the money I have.

Frugality also forces a person to be more creative. It's easy to see something and just buy it. But I enjoy seeing something I like and think" can I make that?" Or can I buy it second hand? Or maybe it's worth saving up for. I make my own clothes, curtains, bedspreads, I can re- upholster old furniture and generally try to make presents for people. I forage for wild fruits and make jams and chutney etc. I steal from skips and repaint furniture people throw out. I am loving your frugal tips! Keep it up Austin!

I learned about frugality from my grandmother. She was also a great environmentalist without realizing it because she never waisted anything. She reused margarine and yougourt containers instead of keeping buying expensive plastic food containers at the time.

Thanks, Austin! Being frugal gives you the wealth of having choices. We have raised our kids to be frugal, and they have thanked us as adults that they don't have student loans and car payments as they start their adult lives!
I was raised by depression era parents and I have no debts.
Americans are rich in so many ways compared with other cultures. I have friends who visited parts of Mexico where they don't eat unless they find something. Their clothes are barely classified as such. As Americans we poorly handle our money and end up broke. I remember going to Virginia for a 4th of July festival and paying my mom's way. She and I went home by touring. It ended up being a lovely trip. I saved for that trip. My husband and I took that trip after we got married. This country offers so many incredible places we've seen. My mother insisted on going with me. I'm glad she did. Frugality allows me to carry a $35 designer purse. I bought it online. My parents were extremely frugal. We sit in a home that's close to be paid off, no credit card debt, no car payments, 3 pets (dog, cats) and full bellies daily. I won't tell you what we're worth, but we're comfortable. I look forward to hearing your nuggets of wisdom. We're were to Canada once. It was an interesting learning experience. 90 on the speed limit sign isn't quite as fast as that sounds.
Frugality has shown me that I really need or even want very little. It has helped me find so much clarity and JOY in being selective and intentional about the things I bring into my life. I’m so much happier and feel a great deal of freedom in this way of living. Austin you are an inspiration to us all!
I am a dollar multimillionaire living in India and enjoying my retirement.I am a CA /CPA by qualification and have always been conservative with money from a very young age .Was fascinated by the magic of compound interest and invested for the long term .Now years later
the income flow from the productive assets is like a mighty river.

I am also a frugal college student. I graduated from a state university here in the Philippines (government-sponsored) without paying any tution fees.

I graduated high school in 1980. Everyone either went to college, entered the military or got married. There was no idea to backpack across Europe or take a gap year off. I went right into nursing school then off to full time work. I got a passport at age 50 (after divorce) and have been traveling abroad since then. I wish I had started traveling at a much younger age.

I'll have to rewatch this one with my oldest daughter. She wants to travel as she sees friends of ours traveling. This will show her that if she really wants to, she can.
I did most of my traveling before kids. Once kids started coming along we took a break. Now we are working on seeing the United States. And before my oldest leaves the house we we'll hit Europe, a trip my wife has been wanting to do for a long time.

I enjoy your videos and commend you for your frugality. Getting through college debt free and working full time is great. My son was able to do something similar, living at home and commuting (our car, our insurance) with a small amount of college debt (because i also saved money toward his schooling). But, what you've omitted here is that living at home and your parents support (financial and otherwise) is what helped make that happen. No rent or living expenses is huge. I would gladly do this for each of my children, but it isn't FREE.

Austin, Great Video! I have a similiar story. Went to Community College then transferred to 4 year State College, lived at home and graduated debt free. Worked full time while going to college to. Took Civil Service tests. Got the Job a wanted worked for 31 years and retired at 51 years old with a nice but modest pension and full Health benefits. I did it all by living FRUGALLY, saving and keeping my eye on the Ball. Staying focused on what I wanted and where I wanted to go. I'm 74 and I love my life! and have no regrets.
My ex-wife became financially independent in her early thirties by being extremely frugal. Being born a Dutch myself I learned being frugal growing up as we Dutch are traditionally very frugal and having the savings I did from being frugal has gotten me through many difficult situations in my life.

Frugality has enabled me to make choices in life. When I was in my 20's I had my children and my desire and dream was to stay at home and raise them. My husband worked at his job, while it was my job to stretch every cent. This enabled me to fulfil that dream and I was able to stay home with my children until they reached high school. I'm now 56 and continue to live my frugal lifestyle, this enables me to work part time and enjoy the life I want to live.
Catherine congrats. You've done a great job by staying at home, I want to have the same privilege when I get my own children.
I already live very frugal, so I'm saving/investing a lot to feel more confortable financially before quit the corporate world.
We are kindred spirits Agustin. I Grew up in Quito in the 80s and 90s before coming back to the US.
I also went to community college then to state univ. after that. Debt free is the way to go!
I'm not as well traveled as you are, YET, but I certainly plan to be. It really makes all the difference in the world when you prioritize your finances, have no debt, and live minimalistically. You can afford to travel more often if that is what matters most to you. It's near the top of the list for me!

Well, i started to live a bit more frugally today. Twice i left the house today and purposely not took my purse. And i also went back to my old ways of getting free food off of Olio app (food that would of been wasted by supermarkets). My whole dinner and dessert was made of free food. Dinner was brown rice with onions, edamame and kale..then i topped it with mussels & squid seafood pot. Was so worried it would taste bad but it turned out delicious! It was all free food and it was from the supermarket Waitrose (here in UK) which is one of those posh shops..the tiny packet of seafood was originally priced at £4 each and i had 2! Pudding was apple with peanut butter (apple free from work/ peanut butter from my dads house).
Aint gunna lie it felt sooo good to not of spent a penny today and still managed to get free stuff. In fact i even made £5 today after doing a declutter and putting it on olio..i put it up for £3.50 and the guy offered a fiver!!! 🎉🎉 I was not complaining 😅😂
Hope this is a means to go on. Really gunna try to follow your lead! Really wanna get those driving lessons and get my van so i can stop paying extortionate rent and have the freedom to travel plus sell my artwork en route instead of having to listen to a boss!! ❤

This content makes so much sense to me I am going to share it with my two grandsons, 13 and 16. I love my daughter but she and her husband do not appreciate the value of frugality. They have a huge home, two high end vehicles, a lake home. And they lavish expensive gifts onto my grands. I am so sad to see those boys being given so much stuff with no understanding what they are doing to the boys. I don't know if this video will make an impact on my grands but I am going to try. I do not know how else to reach them for this common sense approach to personal finances. I worry about their future.

My biggest exp is my daughter education. Here in SA we unfort don't have college or free educatiion. Quiet a lot. We travel a lot and Im Tour Guide. So, I love travelling. Come visit us in South Africa. . .we near Zimbabwe, Malawi, Zambia, Mozambique
People don’t realize how easy it is to be comfortable, not rich. 30k saved up will protect you and help you sleep at night. Sometimes I think it is all I will ever need. Just 30k.

Paid off mortgage today 🎉 Debt free and ready to reap the rewards of our frugality!
Congratulations! I have 6 months left. No other debt. I paid off my car (1% interest) last year and it was a huge help with cash flow. I’ve reduced (read: eliminated $3600) each year in eliminated services, memberships, budgeting differently, etc. I had to buy a mower and a few yard tools but it’s really paid off. A lot was small ($35/mo) on phone bills, gym membership and streaming services … low bills but cumulatively not paying them helps enormously with cash flow. It took persistence, making a few mistakes, charging to my 2% interest card (paid off each month), autopay whenever possible, aka just the small stuff. Changing how and what I purchase, the works.

I went to community college right after high school, because I didn't want to go $40k+ into debt. A lot of the people that bragged about going to big 4 year schools wound up in community college with me due to messing around and not staying focused during their senior year.

Frugality isn't deprivation, its "moderation". One can still live a good life without going overboard with their money.

I'm 35 now, being frugal helped me to be debt free and enjoy the life I want. I work my ass off and I can retire if I want, cause I have saved and invested enough that can support me for a life time.

All depends on what you consider rich. At 29, I was the father of 3 kids. And now at 50, I am an empty nester. There is no right or wrong way to run your life, as long as it works the best for you. Saying that, I have been frugal all my life due to being rasied poor. And as becoming a father, I followed that, to an extent and worked a lot of extra hours. But with kids and all that go with it, sometimes, you have no control over the money being spent. I have friends that waited to have kids, and now I have some my age with 3 year old kids. So they wont be able to retire until maybe 70, because their kids will be still at home. is that good or bad, no one knows

Well,this was a particularly inspiring video talk and I really want to comment on a few of the points but what I say is not a critisism of your experience or way but more of a contrast. I actually agree with every word you say but, there's that "but" ......oh well. Community College sounds like what in the UK is the Open University. Its a proper university education and you pay a fee but of course much less than actually being at a university ie a stone or brick one! And you can do it while working full time and some people do it when they retire as they always wanted to but couldn't before. I grew up in a "frugal" household. We had no heating so we shivered all winter,we never went on holiday,we ate sparingly. Our bathroom was...we didn't want to go there. It was like bathing at the North Pole. And eventually as I got older I realised this sort of frugality was dumb. It wasnt FOR anything. Its not like my parents were saving up for a better life. It was a sort of inverse or perverse ego trip to sort of convince ourselves that we were BETTER than all our neighbours because we werent materialistic and "keeping up with the Jones". But of course that's not the sort of "frugality" you are talking about. Also travel is I think much easier for a young man than a young woman. I mean solitary independent travel,the more adventurous kind. Not that I wanted to hack through jungles and scale rock faces. In fact I think for all the nonsense talk nowadays about "girl power" and "equality" it's probably MORE dangerous now for young women than it was in the 1960s,70s,even 80s. My friend but I didn't know her then really did all that,blagged her way around the world back in those days. Her stories!
While I was slogging away paying bills. Its hard to save even if you live with your parents if you're the one paying the bills.
Sorry for my slight grumpiness. Somehow "girl power" passed me by. So it's surprising after all this that I am into frugality but the right kind. Also I have traduced my parents and made them sound like monsters but they werent,they were both lovely but had weird money ideas. (As in "money is evil").

Austin, could you please make a video sharing your mindset about setting goals? Being frugal and content can have an adverse affect on goal-setting. I don't really know what I want in life anymore as I have everything I NEED. I've been to 15+ different countries, bought a house with my partner, lived overseas for one year, and now am making great progress with my career, which I enjoy (so far). I'm still frugal but it's hard to determine what I should be frugal for anymore.
Maybe you could support a child in a poor country. There are some charities you can do it through so it's all legit and properly organized. Just an idea.

Thank you for your content! I'm in the process of reorganizing my life, downsizing again and re-evaluating where I should live. Having been in Vegas for a bit, it is no longer affordable and tired of getting so little in return. It was affordable but no longer so my plan of paying off my last remaining debt is not happening... I'm just spinning my wheels as there's not much more I can cut out.
Tell us about living in Colorado Springs... the affordability factor, etc... Thinking of relocating to So. Central CO or Northern NM..... I need mountains in my life!
