January is a great time of year to do a little organizing. Now that the holidays are over you might want to take some time to build this simple garage storage cabinet. Its shelves are shallow enough to prevent multiple layers of junk from accumulating, yet deep enough to store most stuff.

I remember when this was new content. Now I'm remodeling my shop and it moved from entertainment to really useful. Thank you.
Steve ... Please do everyone a HUGE Favor and NEVER stop making these videos its always something I would have never thought of and you make it simple I love your work
Blue cabinets, orange cabinets. Its definitely a cornucopia of colors in your shop. Another great video.
Any chance of a little bottle of the good stuff Father?
*****
Are you saying you don't like the look of the old, dirty, stained ugly tan paint in my shop?!
***** My wife was watching this video over my shoulder, and the minute you started painting it, she said, "Wait - it's not purple...?"
Hi Steve! I'm also a hobbyist woodworker, and a new fan. Just wanted to say that since browsing through your videos old and new, I can see that your filming and editing have been getting better and better, so keep up the good work!
Regarding the cabinet, an alternative that I like to use for supporting the shelves is those tracks that accept little metal cleats for placing the shelves at any height. Not as elegant, obviously, but if you set the track into a routed channel, it's discreet. It also doesn't provide as much bracing as permanent shelves, but I tend to install some kind of backer board anyway for extra insurance. It's easy enough to cut out a hole for outlets, etc.
As someone who's more of a do-er than a planner, I like to be able to reconfigure the shelves as I figure out the best way to organize stuff inside the cabinet.
"It's bigger on the inside." LOL Comments like this is why this is one of my favorite channels even though I own only 2-3 basic tools. Have a Happy New Year.
I've already said it on your Facebook page, but nice way to kick off the year! Finally, in Cambodia, we have a decent internet connection! We move into our new shop and attached house when we get home in February!
Ahhhh! He painted wood! J/K, I actually really like the eclectic colors of furniture in the shop. Especially against the now white wall.
"Eclectic" is not the same adjective I would use!! LOL
Thanks Steve!
Thank you for sharing your video. I have recently had to build a kitchen cabinet, with limited space and around an electric and water meter. Sliding doors was my only option. But without your video and expanation I would have been lost. Thank you again for sharing.
I appreciate you, Steve. As a carpenter myself, it's always nice to see how other craftsmen work. Also, you're just very entertaining. Your energy is incredible. Keep it up!
Nice color, adds a tropical theme to the shop...
The color is spot on, balancing the orange storage cabinet on the other side.
Just found this page...great project plans, Steve, thank you VERY much. As you said, we could change the dimensions to suit...so I did. I'm congenitally cheap (...look up skinflint in the dictionary, there's a picture of ME) -- I decided to make TWO cabinets from that sheet of 3/4 inch plywood. Ripped out five boards, four of them 9.75 inches wide, one 9 inches (all of them a skosh shy to allow for kerfs). Two of the wider boards I cut in half, so sides are only 48 inches. The other three boards (two wide, one narrow) I cut into three equal parts each, so (shy) 32 inches long. That gave me six wide boards 32 inches long. Four were used for tops and bottoms. The two remaining wide 32-inchers I ripped down to 9 inches for shelves. With the three pieces from that original narrow 9-inch board, I had five 32-inch shelves. I originally planned to have three shelves in one cabinet and only two in the second one...but I opted to take a piece of 1x10 pine left over from another project, ripped it down for the third shelf on the second cabinet. Unlike your situation where an open back was OK, my barn has rodents, so I added a quarter-inch plywood back to each cabinet, with a thin layer of steel wool in the glue joint between the cabinets and their backs (...seems like rodents will NOT try to chew through steel wool). VWAH-LAH! Two cabinets for the price of one (...more or less). One last point, I don't think you need to cut the dado for the top guides so deep (half an inch) -- it leaves only a shy quarter inch of plywood, which is pretty weak. Why not make it just a quarter inch deep? Still holds the guide securely, and having a quarter inch of plastic sticking down from the top really makes no difference. [...And, like all free advice, this is worth exactly what you paid for it.]
Great way to start off the new Year Steve! Nicely done!

Nice work Steve. Really like the bright color. It makes the place "happier".
"Hippier" in my opinion. Nice weekend project though.
This thing changed my life.
I love the sound of the nailgun.
Loved the Dr. Who reference. "It's bigger on the inside". Interesting color choice.
You always make everything look easy. Congrats Steve
Shop project for the win , Your the biggest motivation to clean out my shed and converted into a wood shop . thanks for the colorful ideas .
Greets from your Dutch fan .
Look forward to your videos every week! They are fun, funny and informative. Keep em coming! Andy
Happy New Year Steve. Another great project. Thank you for for all of your great videos.
Awesome! I think I like the orange paint better :)
This is a really cool idea for storage. I also wanted to thank you explaining how you hung the cabinet on the wall. I have a bunch of cabinets that I salvaged that I had no idea how to hang. I am going to use the same type of hanger you explained in the video.
I dont even wood work but love watching your videos your passion brings me back.
Hey Steve I like your cabinet slide door am going make one in my shop but I have to wait good weather and right now it freeze rain and sleet and snow and below the zero degree and wind chill -17 degree below zero am in bootheel Missouri and I watch every Friday it so much fun to make project stuff thank Terry
I always like your color choices!
Using the wall as storage is the best use of space. I like having a sort of island. I usually have my tablesaw out and a foldable plastic table as a glue-up table/junk table. Another table for metal working, and my workbench for luthier work. The only thing I usually have against the wall is my workbench and glue up table, because it's a cement wall behind it.
Nice job! Great idea for garage storage. Living in the southwest, I found you choice of paint to be exactly what I would choose. Thanks for all that you do :)
Good job Steve.
Keep the videos coming. It gives me another reason to look forward to Fridays!
Nice job and a happy new year
i realy like the shop organizaton projects, this is cool.
There is a big joke that wood workers only like shop projects.
Great job steve keep the colors coming its all about the fun
Hello Steve, I really want to say thank you because you had inspired me in wood working projects. Regards from Malaysia~ . Wish you good luck in future!
Really nice job. Simple and functional (like the colour you picked). Sliding doors are really underated.
Nice and simple...you made my day....thanks Steve
Steve: thank you for another great project to put on the to-do list. Love the bright colors and think you should continue with them. Hope you enjoyed the holiday season and I look forward to another fun-filled year of WWMM videos.
Exactly what I was looking for! Great ideas/explanation/presentation of the cabinet with sliding doors theme :D
Job well done, Steve.
I might not approve of your choice of color but you are very inspiring in your builds. Thank you!
/a Swedish aspiring woodworker.
thanks for the inspiration, i will start wood working as one of my building hobby passion
Steve - be careful charging your batteries in that cabinet. They might overheat and not have enough air circulation especially if plugged into a power strip. I would drill a vent hole every 1/4" and also vent it to the outside in several spots. Maybe install some fans on top as well and a place that can hold a block of ice on the bottom shelf for cooling purposes. (Joke for any of those out there that never saw Steve's "charging station" video). Great project!
Great video as usual, Steve! Thanks so much. I need to make a few of these...
Congrats... Cool as always. Like your new K5.
Thank you for the video!
What a great project. This is easy enough to do on a weekend. I shall paint mine purple!
Happy new year Steve ...keep up the great work and thanks for sharing !
Steve
Very helpful. Thank you!
Soo good!! Thanks for sharing.
Great job Steve. I think all of us woodworkers' new years resolution is to clean up shop! Nice paint color too!

YAY Shop Project!!!!
Hey Steve I really like the palette projects and you make it a lot simpler
hey steve thank you so much for the video, it helped me out alot!
and happy new year!
Alex
Happy New Year...Yes I enjoy projects like this.
Nice. Thanks for the brilliant Project! :)
Great idea, Steve! I've never been a fan of outward opening doors.
I really enjoy this
Steve, After watching you build the wall cabinet, I decided to use your plan to build three 32 inch by 7 ft sets of shelves. Although I didn't use the French Cleat I did attach cleats like in your plan and screwed them directly into the studs. I set the shelves on treated wood stands and made a face frame to tie them all together. I look forward to more shop organization plans. Thanks.

Hey Steve, New to your channel. I love watching your videos. I appreciate your humor along with the information you provide. I couldn't make a comment without saying how much I like your old Ford truck. Im a fan of older trucks. Ford or Chevy. I'm enjoying the content.. Thanks,
I love your videos! I don't know what it is but when I watch it i feel really relaxed and it gives me energy. Keep on making vids!
Very nice man.
Great, thank you!
Well done.
That is a great Dr. Who Reference, "its bigger on the inside".
Muy practico y util, gracias por compartir los videos
Great job Steve and Have a Happy New Year.
Steve, have you ever thought of making spoons, spatulas, salad tongs, etc? I'd be interested to see how you'd approach a project like that.
great video!!
You, sir, are one amazing wood-worker. Instant sub from me! Great videos!
I was thinking. The same thing
New sub also
Cool I noticed the doors binding a little if you rub candle wax on the bottom of the door it will run smoother.
Love the shelf. I have the same space by my shop garage door. Might have to do one of these.
Really good
YAY! Steve is back! i thought you got hurt making last weeks video so i was worried but yay!
lol at the end of the video i seen the finger hole on the cabinet and thought i had a spot on my monitor almost rubbed a hole in it trying to get it off !
Great Vid steve i'm going to build some of these when i can get past the snow to my garage !
nice, quick and easy.

Wish a happy new Year I Love your Channel a lot of inspiration
greets from Austria
Nice!
I am very happy when I watch your videos and I wish I could help you, and God bless you.
I like the sliding door idea. I need to figure out a way to add simple, but strong and sturdy cabinets in my unfinished basement workshop that is surrounded by concrete walls. Maybe this, with a backing, hung from the rafters by strong-enough chain.
aw, painting such cool woodworking projects it's like to throw some ice cubes in the wine glass, or beer, lol =)
Hey Steve!!! Welcome back!!! Happy New Year!!! =D
ill make that when im home next good job
nice job as always Steve, my wife wants one for the laundry room, will have to pick a different color tho
semplice e pratico:complimenti!
Great use of what would normally be wasted space.
Nice cabinet. I see you're letting Richard Simmons pick out your paint colors.
happy new year ! it's to cold in Chicago to be out in the shop. but soon.
Nice work very good use of space . Should have painted it purple. But nice color.
Dam you love that colour.
the shop looks great hermano muy bien ^__^
Steve, You have the entire weight of the cabinet supported by a handful of screws on the french cleat on the wall! A quick fix would be to put a strip underneath the cabinet, flush with the bottom and screwed in. That would give you some additional support. That cabinet will get very heavy when loaded, would hate to see you have a catastrophe in your shop!
White is good for light, but not for monitors. You are sacrificing our viewing experience for you own convenience!! ;)
Hey Steve, Thanks for the videos, I just started woodworking about a month ago, and I was wondering if you ever will do a video about plywood bending, like making a cylinder.
Thanks again for another great video
Thanks for another great video. Happy 2014 Steve
