Ammo Tests - 22LR Comparison

  • I decided to do some ammo tests and do a 22LR comparison. I've been sitting on a 22LR stockpile for a while and I've finally had the chance to shoot through a bunch of it.
In this 22LR ammo test video I compare Federal, Winchester, Remington, CCI Stingers, CCI Minimags, and Norma USA TAC-22 ammunition types.
I've always wanted to test my 22LR collection to see what, if any, differences there are in the various types.
Some of my 22LR ammo test results were a bit surprising as well as disappointing.

I’ve watched quite a few of these type videos and feel qualified to speak on the subject.
    Your ammo is fine.
    Your gun is fine.
    It’s your targets.
    Your targets are off.

When it comes to .22 ammo - the true test of quality control is to measure the thickness of the rim. Target shooters put their rim thicknesses into batches.. they shoot certain batches of rim thickness together. Every gun likes certain ammo... even identical makes and models may shoot the ammo ammo differently. My experiences with Thunderbolt is that it is very dirty and fouls my barrels too much.. I have decided to stick with plated ammo and to skip lead rounds altogether. You should also try Aquila ammo - it is pretty good for the price - Thanks for posting this video

    Very informative. Thank you.
I would add that, with Stingers which have a longer cartridge case and therefore longer powder burn,
a longer barrel (minimum 20" barrel) often allows Stingers to perform better than with a shorter barrel.

Good video. Keep in mind that results will very with every gun. I took 6 different ammo brands to see what my S&W 617 liked. It ended up liking the CCI minimags and Winchester high velocity rounds. The slower the bullet the more open my groups were.

What I noticed over the years is that a lot of times Winchester and Remington will have spinning heads I think it's designed like that the reason so that the rounds feed better in the 22s CCI doesn't because their ammunition is a higher quality and the spinning on the heads are a lot less than what they were about 5 years ago but they still spin

  • @mohfrontline2792

Thunderbolts are highly accurate out of my Remington Matchmaster. They run a little dirty so I just clean my rifle after so many rounds. I've taken plenty of groundhogs and raccoon with thunderbolts. Even taken a groundhog at over 100yards using iron sights with thunderbolts, that's accounting for bullet drop, etc. I love CCI stuff, but like many, I'm on a tight budget, so I always use Remington thunderbolt's, they do the job for hunting and plinking without breaking the bank.

On the thunderbolts is all about the lot of ammo. I bought 4 boxes on sale, and was getting 1” groups at 50y and 3” groups at 100 yards. An after 2k rounds only 2 failures to fire, and they both went bang the second time. Next lot of thunderbolts I bought 2 boxes. 3” groups at 50y and 6.5-7” groups at 100 yards with about 15-20 failures to fire and I’m still not done with those.

I like Thunderbolts too in my Marlin 60. I've tried all the hypervelocity 22s over the years and they have all been less accurate than the standard velocity heavier exposed lead bullets. Gilded bullets are cleaner but usually less accurate and more expensive regardless of velocity. Accuracy is everything when hunting with 22.

You know they sold their factory and the new owners retooled, and the brand new (2023) Remington 22’s I’ve tried are much improved! And in my experience worked better than the Federals or Winchesters. I promise none of my new Remingtons had loose bullets as he displayed.

Hi Dave, love the video. I do have an issue with one thing. The Norma ammo. I go out shooting with a group of friends and from time to time we go in on 1000 rounds of 9mm together. We got Norma this particular time. One friend loaded you a magazine and started shooting. Pulled the trigger on the 3rd round and it detonated and jammed inside the gun. Completely splitting the frame. This was a brand new gun too. First time being fired. Surprisingly, and thankfully, no real injury to the shooter. We SHOULD have pulled all of that ammo right then. But, another friend loaded a magazine and went to shoot. The same two or three rounds in and a second internal jam and detonation, and another brand new gun destroyed. Also, luckily, no bad injury to the shooter. Obviously, we didn't shoot another round of Norma after that, and I will never trust ANY products from that company. We got extremely lucky that neither guy lost fingers or hands or anything. And not willing to test those waters again.

I just finished going through a new box of 300 rounds, and I found four rounds in which the bullet wiggles more than it should, so 98.667% of the rounds should be good to go.

I'm thinking that there are 2 possibilities... one is that his 10/22 just isn't really on point or needs more bench rest practice/better scope/ or some other variable... looks like all but the stingers are pretty consistent "about an inch and a quarter" or so which makes me think its the gun or the shooter... But he got me curious, I may have to test these in my marlin 60... Though I don't buy Winchester bulk anymore because it just doesn't work too often in multiple guns.

This is a great idea for videos. Take a particular, popular, rifle type and shoot groups with it, at average range (say 50yards) using commonly available ammo. Of course, every individual rifle is a law unto itself, but specific rifle platforms (like your 10/22) should have similar characteristics. It might be good, if at the end, you had a flip chart kinda page where each rounds performance could be looked at and compared easily to the others.

Five and a half minutes in and I've made an observation. Seems to a pattern that your center (larger) target creates bigger groups. Take it for what it's worth but, in my opinion, there may be an issue with your optic or at least your human interface with that optic.
And I agree with other commenters about including flyers, unless you felt human error during the process, include the flyers.
Excellent, informative video this far in the video though. Thank you for saving me the cost of the ammo. I made similar observations about my Winchester ammo and have thankfully ran out.

  • @sapago4166
    @sapago4166 Před 5 lety

No hate, Dave, but that is no way to measure your groups. Groups are measured center-to-center and should include fliers. Fliers can result from variations in powder charge/velocity, concentricty, bullet weight (usually due to voids), and rim thickness, not just shooter error. The group size is the distance between the most distant rounds minus the diameter of the bullet.
My rifle also loves the Tac-22 ammo, but CCI standard velocity is a cheaper alternative. I shoot bolt action so the failure to feed issue doesn't bother me.
Thanks for doing this. I love seeing ammo accuracy tests and hope you do more in the future.

With my Ruger 10/22 I would just buy whatever was cheapest (for hunting ) it seems that anything shoots out of this rifle. With my Ruger SR22 handgun I can also shoot all the bulk ammo you had listed with minimal failures, I do like the federal auto match price point per 325 rounds. I don't carry concealed with this handgun so the match grade ammo (price)isn't necessary, its nothing to go through 150 or more rounds per trip to the range on a slow day! with the rifle anything is fair game as far as ammo goes but with the pistol I try to stay with a platted bullet to keep the barrel cleaner longer while at the range.

All 22 dies are going to be the last to be changed in any factory. I have found over the years a bunch of different results. Some of the more expensive brands of late are lousy when it comes to accuracy. Guns are not much better these days. Pumping things out way to fast to keep quality control.

22 plinkster RAVES about a new rifle he got, for its accuracy: czcams.com/video/coB-HlGWeMc/video.html
Accuracy and gear is a lifelong adventure (I've been shooting for nearly 60 years now, lol). For one thing, it offers an AMAZING opportunity to burn through a lot of money. I've found it most important to determine exactly what you want the firearm to DO (...to be capable of) before you buy it. Furthermore, accuracy in NOT a function of the barrel exclusively. With rifles, bedding is also very important -- as well as tolerances of the action itself (i.e., how the round is held in the chamber). I'd also recommend buying a box of quality target ammo (like Eley) to get a benchmark to compare from.
In any search for accuracy, beginners need to keep two things in mind that they sometimes don't: 1) Proper scope mounting (and indeed, sometimes scope quality itself -- sometimes crosshairs on cheaper scopes can "walk around!"). The number of people with loosely mounted scopes, wondering why they can't shoot accurately, is astonishing. 2) Cleaning/fouling. 22s can be very dirty guns. A badly fouled bore will badly degrade accuracy (and so will improper cleaning which is abrasive to the barrel crown). I've found Bore Tech cleaning supplies the best.
An ordinary 10/22 is fine for plinking and practice. Monkeying around with it TOO MUCH, to try to achieve some "ideal" accuracy, will ultimately cost you more than buying a highly accurate rifle to begin with (and in the end, it still won't be as good as the good rifle). If you want a Ferrari, buy a Ferrari -- don't buy a Fiesta and start changing the drive train, etc.

Too bad you used a 1022. When 6-8 of us old High School buddies get together every so often the grouping of the guys with the 1022s always looks like yours, whereas the rest of our holes are mostly touching each other.
    - Not one round tested here can't out-shoot *that* rifle.
Try an older Marln 60 or a good old Remington/Winchester single shot bolt, clean the heck out of the barrel, remove the copper & lead - then try this test again. Your eyes will be opened.

I like the CCI but it's way too expensive.
I've been getting the Auto Match for 6 cents per round and out of the last THOUSAND rounds that I fired (out of a TX22 semi auto) I had ONE failure. I never would've believed that it would run that well but it does.
I've stacked 10k rounds of it and I buy 3 or 4 boxes every time I get near a Wal-Mart.

      My NON-Modified 10/22 and 22/45 are 35 and 25(I think) years old!
Stingers are still my choice for the time being... (27 birds with the pistol one year, it was awesome)
Can't attach a file at the moment but I thought the crew would like it... (Anyone know what I'm doing wrong?)
