A veritable time capsule of cool will be offered in Freeman’s January 31 Books, Maps & Manuscripts auction. Lot 301, a group of the first 36 issues of Andy Warhol’s Interview magazine (1969-1972), features exclusive interviews with celebrities, artists, musicians and more. The self-proclaimed “Crystal Ball of Pop” went on to publish for nearly 50 years and was considered a leader in both underground and entertainment journalism.
Recently, Freeman’s Head of Books, Maps & Manuscripts, Darren Winston, sat down with artist and writer Duncan Hannah to discuss the collection. Hannah was considered part of the Interview family, and was close to the project in its formative years.
“Interview was so important to all my friends,” Hannah said. “A) Because it was Andy Warhol’s magazine, and B) because they showed you the underground you weren’t likely to see anywhere else. This was a ‘who’s who’ of what was happening not in the mainstream for the most part.”
Last March, Hannah’s “Twentieth-Century Boy: Notebooks of the Seventies” was released to rave reviews. The book is a chronicle of the artist’s time in New York City in the 1970s.
“Set in downtown Manhattan during its glory years of grungy punkery, 1970-1981, Hannah’s book illuminates this last great bohemia…how fortunate that Hannah managed to stagger home…to immortalize his passage through this starry vortex,” The Art Newspaper’s Adrian Dannatt said in a review.
From its start, Interview was a reflection of Warhol’s eccentricity and often ran unedited. The artist’s obsession with all-things Hollywood, made evident in his renowned celebrity portraits, transformed the magazine from obscurity to a guiding force of trend.
Watch as Hannah recalls time spent with Warhol and other Interview heavyweights, and see the collection for yourself beginning January 28 at Freeman’s.
Special thanks to our friends at the Norwood Club for providing such an ideal interview space.
