      I know there’s no place for it in modern gaming but your always going to get one bad apple at some point, believe me I am 24 and played with more then a few people who were either it’s my way or the highway who set ridiculous high expectations or the unfunny trolls who are cringing throughout the whole match.
      That’s not as bad as being called out for something about you that shouldn’t matter. Am autistic and sometimes make the wrong call, don’t hide it and anybody could have messed up but suddenly now am see as a burden that everyone is “helping” carrying me through the game, assuming I can’t help it when it just means am a little slow not incapable of learning from my mistakes. If it continues to happen then fair enough but don’t let one bad experience ruined your fun playing vermintide 2.

      Well I once joined a game where my friend was playing with some randoms.
      Before that game I had a round the 500ish hours on the engineer class, yet had to swap to a different one as the dwarf was already take. (i went with the bounty hunter)
      Since I’m used to play with the ulti button without much happening before I officially shoot the rattling gun, I joined the game turned 360% and accidentally killed my own buddy.
      We both couldn’t believe it and it was the greatest laugh for that day😂

    I've seen a lot of videos on this online gaming toxicity, but never one that integrates research from actual studies this well while still remaining digestible and engaging. Great work, this was well worth the wait and is going right up with the Afterthoughts video about toxicity in MOBAs as the best discusions of this topic on youtube IMO. Strictly Co-op Vermintide is certainly not free of accountability-averse toxic players, but I worry that the relatively friendly and supportive vibe of the current community will change for the worse with the PVP release, whether by the injection of highly competitive people into the playerbase or just the general vibe shift towards optimised meta-focused play that PVP modes demand. Either way, chill games in private lobbies with our friends aren't going anywhere, so even if quickplay becomes a cesspool, no amount of screaming CoD kids stinking up PVP will be able to ruin the kind of games I care about the most.

    I played on Steam for years with very few friends. Then I bought Vermintide and over the course of 3 years have made 100 friends. Vermintide has been one of the kindest communities I've been a part of and I don't think that Versus is going to introduce too much toxicity into the game. The people here are generally really cool and I've only had to deal with a few unsavory types here and there. I don't think this is something we're going to have to worry about too awful much.

    I've been playing V2 for a long time, since the beginning, almost 2k hours registered, I could recall less than 10 very toxic players in that time, that's impressive imo.
    Of course, there are minor incidents here and there regularly, but nothing as bad as other communities and that's why I remark just a few encounters.

    Huh, the online anonymity this is probably why when compete in jujitsu and even when I spar muay tai, 99% of people are super chill and you become good friends after a very competitive match or session.
    But I always really really enjoy dueling I'm games and gank spanking. But it gets super toxic and it seems like nowadays, after a good duel, the other guy usually just gets meaner wins or loses.
    I always wondered why this dichotomy is so different. Thought there was more to it than "threat of violence"

    There's already some level of toxicity in V2 passively. I've told this story before to friends because I think it's hilarious but it shows this point really well. I was playing Sienna with a fireball staff and because I know how annoying it is to be shot in the back I was overly careful not to hit anyone, even with the stupid hitbox of the M2. I managed to go ~80% of the mission without ANY friendly fire. Then I hit Saltzpyre *once*. He proceeds to down me and kill me while using a bunch of racial slurs, then I'm kicked from the game.

    I agree that in general, V2 has a great community. That said, I've played with some weirdos. Some folks being outright Nazi's (racial slurs, OK'ing genocide, praising Hitler...etc.). That's not something that's ok to joke about, and I left the game immediately and was a bit disheartened that there were people who either A). Believed what they said, or B) thought it was OK to joke about it. These bad experiences have been super minimal in my nearly 1,000 hours of gameplay.

    Every game has toxic players, it’s not really an issue in my eyes. The only way to eliminate toxicity is to eliminate the players’ ability to interact with each other entirely. Obviously this does far more harm than good, and it’s better to just move on from negative encounters with people rather than try to “fix” an unsolvable problem.

    I’ve actually never met anybody being toxic or mean to somebody.
    Even if we lost a game, it was more often some laughter before the group tried again.

    Absolutely love the more in depth look at how the culture and the general zeitgeist develops in regards to coop games, I find it interesting to see that happen in real time as Darktide added penances and challenges to flaunt certain titles and we can already see people being more toxic than the usual because of it! Hope you do more videos like this!

    I honestly had no clue of what toxicity in video games actually was. Thank you for defining it for me.
    As for the issue of toxicity itself, I can't help but think that there could be a way to at least minimize the issue. Some people I noticed appeared to accept that toxicity is a normal part of PvP, and I understand that, but I don't like that mindset. Implying an external locus of control actually makes the problem worse, since people would probably continue being toxic as others simply watch, believing there's no way to stop or fix it.
    The problem will only go away if ranked mode PvP and perhaps even non-ranked PvP goes away, and I'm aware that's not happening. Regardless, there has to be a way to minimize the problem. How many games deal with inter-rank matches? (High ranks mingle with low ranks, pros mingle with noobs)

      An additional note, I feel that something that is able to promote toxicity and anger would be exploiters.
      On the context of Vermintide itself, Versus is in alpha, so that means there's all sorts of problems in it. (Packmasters able to hoist people on rooftops and backstabbers are capable to launching high into the air to knock someone without warning.) Having people cheese these issues at the expense of others can easily promote rage. Losing is not a good feeling. Losing because the other team had better tools is worse.

  • @grayconol
    @grayconol Před 3 měsíci +7

    VT2 and Darktide are some of the most toxic pve games because they have a lot of complicated mechanics and skill expression that matters. If you fail to perform your team can lose quite easily. Team dependence and in VT2/Darktide’s case but also most cases, the performance of your team affecting your performance causes an abnormal amount of toxicity. The only pve game that’s more toxic than these that I’ve experienced is payday2. In short, when you know that your team doing bad will cause you to lose it causes an immediate negative reaction when they do bad and if there’s stuff to lose the reaction trends into being toxic. It’s driven primarily by feeling that you have a lack of agency and then doing something to take agency back into your hands.

      @0sm1um76 Před 3 měsíci +2

      I think VT2 is a lot less prone to this than Darktide, though I think you are right. Darktide especially had those TOXIC penances. Where you'd have players activley throwing trying to do bizzare challenges. Also Darktide I think requires a lot more teamwork with enemies like Bulwarks, Berzerkers, or daemonhosts where they are designed to aggro to 1 player and be difficult to deal with slowly.

    I've played a lot of solo play and not had much toxicity at all, at least on higher difficulties (in the past week I only encountered a single person who left the moment they went down - no slurs or insults). That said, versus will absolutely bring in new players and even if most players aren't toxic, enough will to be noticable. I already saw more toxicity in the Versus beta than a year of normal VT2, and I didn't even play the entire length of the beta.
    edit: once the player count died down in the beta, so did toxicity, aside from people leaving matches

  • @samdoorley6101
    @samdoorley6101 Před 3 měsíci +1

    The closest correlation I can draw are the games Left 4 Dead 1 and 2. In a skill based competitive game with small teams, you are going to get some toxicity. Especially if your team loses, your team mates will look for an excuse as to WHY they lost. Few people are self aware enough to own up their own errors, often preferring to pin the blame on a scapegoat. All the more-so if one person on the team is a stranger or not part of your friends group. There WILL be an uptick in negativity. And likely some actual griefing, depending how things like physical interactions between team mates, and friendly fire. How much of an uptick will depend on how Fatshark moderates their game, and what (if any) tools are available in game for player moderation. A strong community will help, definitely, but without tools to manage bad behavior there's not much it can do.

    How V2 can not be toxic:
    I did a more general comment on toxicity in soloQ, as an argument for game design being partially to blame for toxicity.
    In the case of V2 PVP, it needs to not be ranked, and needs to be quirky, fun and casual. People need to not really care about losing.
    This can be done with voicelines, animations, adding silly gameplay mechanics, and if you have a closing screen, just have a 3 man leaderboard, where all players including both teams are on it, and the things you get rewarded for aren't that serious.
    You would want V2 PVP to feel more like Fall Guys, Mario Party, Among Us, etc.
    The reason being is that the balance is so scuffed.

  • @OminousDog
    @OminousDog Před 3 měsíci

    This will be a more general take on toxicity in games, but I will explain how V2 PVP could not be toxic too (probably a different comment). I'll probably write about that on the Fatshark Forum too.
    Game design can play a huge part in toxicity. This is usually overlooked, while most toxic behaviour is either shrugged off or can actually be explained by anonimity (but look at road rage, and street fights, etc).
    It can also be tied to stress in real life, inability to understand the social situation, or learned behaviour, and ofc mental illness - or ideology. Arrogance.
    So I played on what was Arena-Tournament and Warmane during the merge (WoTLK WoW Arena, etc), which was probably the most toxic community I've ever seen other than racists or religious zealots of all kinds on social media calling for the death of others. I've seen the online version of the worst of the worst. To the point where I just found toxic behaviour in Overwatch and LoL, etc funny.
    The biggest cause I've seen for toxic behaviour in games is SoloQ, and it's why I argue that game design is partially to blame for toxic behaviour, or an amplifier for it.
    In soloQ games, your progression depends on people you're meeting for the first time, and expecting them to play in a way that's perfect or at least understandable (e.g. instinctively uses high ground). You're expected to have good synergy and teamplay with them.
    You're outsourcing your potential to fail.
    Example:
    Overwatch is probably the best example, because of Reinhardt's design. You could have 10 different Reinhardts in a row, and 7 of them would hold block on a low ground and wait to die. You lose -10 rating per match every time this happens. Even if you're polite and teach each one a better way of playing, it's a different person in the next game making the same mistake.
    How is soloQ doomed to fail players?:
    SoloQ is good because of accessibility and queue times, which makes the game succesful, but is bad for the players in the long term.
    I'm unsure as to what OW tournaments look like since the changes they made (I mostly played 6v6 with lots of teamplay).
    During 6v6 the gameplay compared to SoloQ was completely different. It involved a huge amount of planned coordinated movement and timing. To the point where people was winning matches on Dorado, by holding the one room, right next to the spawn with Mei and Winston at the doorway, stalling the payload.
    So for soloQ gameplay this means that you're learning a completely wrong set of skills, even if you're extremely succesful.
    My own experience with this was much the same. I reached r1 in soloQ, but once I started to play 3's in a team, it was completely different, and I would lose to people I beat 100% of the time in soloQ, until I improved.
    A good example of a soloQ game, which ends up just being a team game at high ranked is Apex, here specific strats and comps can be utilized with less chance of someone failing or just straight up not understanding.
