Most day in the life videos on CZcams has been coming from a point of view of a software programmer. I am currently trying to get a long term role with at least two to three years of experience in IT. Once I land a role, I might make my own day in the life of an IT with no bullshit that I think a lot of folks would appreciate. One does not need to see someone waking up, showering, or eating, which everyone does not need to know. Just for the love of god, show us the day in the life from a "professional" point of view. I do not need to know your personal routine. Sheesh. Some people.

I'd advise you to add these three certs: Google cyber security certificate, Security+ and eJPT. You can get them all in 6 months, you'll double your current salary if you already have a job and if you don't they'll help you get one.
I've been in IT for over 10 years and after watching this I gotta say that you are the real MVP. This was great and spot on. My son is hoping to get his first help desk job soon and he sent me this video. I think you did awesome explaining everything.

Great video. Way more informative than a lot of the "professional" videos. It's good to see you so straight up excited about the job. Always take notes about things you learn. The act of writing puts it in your memory. Even if you don't remember the details, you will remember that you wrote it down. A "let me check my notes and get back to you" is much better than floundering, with a user on the line.

Awesome video, i'm in school for cybersecurity atm and am looking into help desk positions to put experience on my resume. This is exactly the kind of stuff i've been searching for but even big name IT channels fail to give a "matter-of-fact" look into what the job is like. I don’t really know why I clicked on this video, I guess it was for the nostalgia. I’m one of the folks who was the “steve”, but have since moved on to other (more specialized) things. I wish you the best of success and am glad to read from others’ comments that they found this video helpful!! I wish I’d seen stuff like this when I’d started. You provide some good advice. Help/service desk can be a really rewarding experience, especially with the dopamine hit of solving a problem or closing your oldest ticket, and is a good introductory position to the world of IT. From there, you can branch out in a variety of different directions as opportunities arise that suit your interest.
Never knew people call the help desk for the most simplest task. At my job we only get tickets when its a regional/server issue. But great video. Straight to the point, details of what your role is. You are going to go far in life. Thank you!
You'd be surprised. I work in school tech support. I have had a very large number of tech "emergencies" where the issue turned out to be that the power strip wasn't plugged into the wall, the power switch was turned off or the teacher didn't know how to push the power button. I've also had plenty of times where the teacher inadvertently changes the video input on their projector/SMART IFP and doesn't know how to change it.

I thought the reason for this was because non tech people are always expressly forbidden from meddling or tempering with equipment whenever they have an issue. If something is wrong, they should not assume that its something simple that they can fix, they should always call tech first. Last thing they want is to be blamed for making a small technical issue into a major disaster just because they tried to fix it themselves.

I know this is a year old video but I wanna say thank you for making this video, in college I did a little bit of student worker as a help desk (for a couple months until their budget ran out) and imo they didn't do a good job. When I got no help desk tickets I asked my bosses if they got something for me, they'll say no, and then when I sit around doing nothing because I'm waiting for a ticket or something to do (being new I didn't know what extra work I can do) I got yelled at so much that made me not want to do IT Then I worked at a courthouse for internship IT and I really had fun working as an intern. Now I work as a housekeeper at my local hospital because I'm going to college for IT and was nervous about getting into the help desk job. Thanks to you it made me want to start applying and less nervous
Hey kid, just to let you know most helpdesk roles are like that. You will have bosses and co workers that will yell at you and make you feel stupid. Also you will have to deal with the clients you’re helping. It’s a very stressful job. But you just have to have thick skin and know how to defend yourself verbally.

This was a really cool and interesting video, although I've been in the IT field for a couple years now, it was still nice to see how everyone starts at, I also was super nervous on my first week, and I still get nervous when I have to jump in to look at something I've never done before. But the great thing about IT is that you are always learning! Keep the videos going! Really interesting!

Thanks for the video, it's nice to see differences in Help-Desk positions as I currently work Help-Desk but since we are a small team we take on roles that most Help-Desk Techs normally wouldn't. This is extremely beneficial since I am able to learn more and put myself in a better place for future promotions. Wow, this honestly seems like an easier gig than my last two jobs, and just easier than I thought in general. Also looks like you have your own area in this job, I hate being surrounded by people who can look over my shoulders so that's awesome you have that (I was surrounded by coworkers in the cubicles in my old job lol). Job applications always try to make shit sound so much more complicated/intimidating than it actually is, so annoying. Thank you for being real about your processes
yea in IT you usually are away from other people for reason that will become clear when u do the job :P Ive had support jobs where i had my own office now i basicly have half a floor of a building for me :P If you are tech savy and stress resistant its a cool job. I been doing it for 10 years and made good progression money wise.

hi i have zero experience in IT but i just applied for any IT related internships. I failed so many some have 3 round interviews so I was very stressed but one company liked me and gave me a chance. I was lucky and thankful now I just shadow a lot of people in the company. i hope i can learn and grow more

Great video, keep up the great work and please create more content. I remember my first day asa HD operator and as a tech people would walk up to me and ask for help, I'd ask them if they have a ticket in, they'd say no. I'd ask them to send in a ticket and I'd help as soon as I can, just because I'm at my desk doesn't mean I'm not working on anything. I'm now a network engineer and the users are still doing the same thing, I refer them to the help desk.
I can relate. I work in school IT support. I had one school that was notorious for teachers not putting in tickets. That was mainly because the previous techs let it slide so teachers would just walk up to our tech area or send students with broken Chromebooks or ask for password resets. I had to have a serious conversation with my boss and the school principal because it was just getting absurd. It got to the point where teachers would drop off stacks of devices in front of the door and not even leave notes or anything. At one point, I had at least 200 devices that I had no idea where they came from and no one asked for them. It was absurd.

I know my first couple years as a help desk technician I asked if I could be a Jr sysadmin or Jr security engineer and they followed through with it and wanted me to get a couple certs and then I was able to work behind a couple people for some months until I was confident, not going to say i'm a vet because a lot of this stuff i'm still learning, but thats def a good idea you have if you haven't already made the move
This video helps, I recently got hired onto a team with a bunch of new people in preperation for a big client for the company coming in. We sadly don't have the luxury of time and it doesn't help that just to get somewhat prepared we've only had a week including two public holidays which has resulted in some steps sadly been skipped. Our management who are wonderful have been working overtime with us to just try and prepare us. I've tried soaking in as much info as I can and this video helps to. My job is a mix of help desk and some more complex stuff. For those that prefer the digital approach One Note is your friend. Its seriously under represented and I strongly suggest it to anybody. When I go in tmro for Monday I'm going to be reading all of the notes I can that I have written down.

I'm actually lacking the job experience for an IT help desk job where I'm located, but I'm a strong candidate for a fiber optic internet office support role that I applied for. Maybe I'll finally escape retail after all. In my opinion, any technical support job is a step towards putting my college degree to use.

I will start working in stage as an IT help desk technician this monday afternoon. I come from a 3 months course, but they didn't tought me nothing about the real work on the field, just the theory and some little excercise. I'm thrilled but also scarried. It's not my first time dealing with customers, but on the phone it's different than in real life like i did. Than i'm little bit anxious about what the company is expecting from me since day 1. I mean, i've studied, but the theory and patrice are very different.

Helpdedk and desktop support is quite different ..desktop support fix and repair daily helpdesk answeres phones along with working with computers issues from setups to some hardware issues
Good luck. It can be a bit scary at first, but you'll eventually get the hang of it. No one expects you (or should expect) to know everything off the top of your head so don't feel bad if you don't know something. Sometimes there are multiple ways of doing the same task. In some places, you have the flexibility to work on something as you like, and with others, you have to follow specific guidelines. Take notes. You will probably be trained on a wide variety of technologies used in your organization: things like ticketing system, how to reset passwords, applications used in the workplace, etc. If you have down time, familiarize yourself with the different programs and webpages that are used. The more you know how to use them, the better you'll become at being able to troubleshoot and help users. Don't be afraid to Google stuff. It's an invaluable tool. Ask for help when you need it. Try to solve problems on your own, but if you get stuck, ask for help.

taking the CTNS ( Computer Technician Network Specialist ) course going on 2 months now but im deciding to take this route once i complete in January , i feel confident to reassemble & dissemble a pc but knowledge wise i dont feel to confident just yet i know within time ill gain the the proper knowledge in order to grow in this field because obtaining my A+ is definitely my goal they make BANK !! I'd advise you to add these three certs: Google cyber security certificate, Security+ and eJPT. You can get them all in 6 months, you'll double your current salary if you already have a job and if you don't they'll help you get one.

The act of writing puts it in your memory. Even if you don't remember the details, you will remember that you wrote it down. A "let me check my notes and get back to you" is much better than floundering, with a user on the line.

I wish you the best of success and am glad to read from others’ comments that they found this video helpful!! I wish I’d seen stuff like this when I’d started. You provide some good advice.
Help/service desk can be a really rewarding experience, especially with the dopamine hit of solving a problem or closing your oldest ticket, and is a good introductory position to the world of IT. From there, you can branch out in a variety of different directions as opportunities arise that suit your interest.
As a new grad I am trying so hard to get in. It's difficult but I won't stop trying

Never knew people call the help desk for the most simplest task. At my job we only get tickets when its a regional/server issue. But great video. Straight to the point, details of what your role is. You are going to go far in life. Thank you!
You'd be surprised. I work in school tech support. I have had a very large number of tech "emergencies" where the issue turned out to be that the power strip wasn't plugged into the wall, the power switch was turned off or the teacher didn't know how to push the power button. I've also had plenty of times where the teacher inadvertently changes the video input on their projector/SMART IFP and doesn't know how to change it.

I thought the reason for this was because non tech people are always expressly forbidden from meddling or tempering with equipment whenever they have an issue. If something is wrong, they should not assume that its something simple that they can fix, they should always call tech first. Last thing they want is to be blamed for making a small technical issue into a major disaster just because they tried to fix it themselves.
Can't thank you enough for this video. I finished my tech classes just a week ago and landed a job at a great company. I didn't want to go in a nervous wreck, so I came here to see what I'd expect, you helped out a lot and I really see myself doing great.

I know this is a year old video but I wanna say thank you for making this video, in college I did a little bit of student worker as a help desk (for a couple months until their budget ran out) and imo they didn't do a good job. When I got no help desk tickets I asked my bosses if they got something for me, they'll say no, and then when I sit around doing nothing because I'm waiting for a ticket or something to do (being new I didn't know what extra work I can do) I got yelled at so much that made me not want to do IT
Then I worked at a courthouse for internship IT and I really had fun working as an intern. Now I work as a housekeeper at my local hospital because I'm going to college for IT and was nervous about getting into the help desk job. Thanks to you it made me want to start applying and less nervous
Hey kid, just to let you know most helpdesk roles are like that. You will have bosses and co workers that will yell at you and make you feel stupid. Also you will have to deal with the clients you’re helping. It’s a very stressful job. But you just have to have thick skin and know how to defend yourself verbally.

This was a really cool and interesting video, although I've been in the IT field for a couple years now, it was still nice to see how everyone starts at, I also was super nervous on my first week, and I still get nervous when I have to jump in to look at something I've never done before. Wow, this honestly seems like an easier gig than my last two jobs, and just easier than I thought in general. Also looks like you have your own area in this job, I hate being surrounded by people who can look over my shoulders so that's awesome you have that (I was surrounded by coworkers in the cubicles in my old job lol). Job applications always try to make shit sound so much more complicated/intimidating than it actually is, so annoying. Thank you for being real about your processes
yea in IT you usually are away from other people for reason that will become clear when u do the job :P Ive had support jobs where i had my own office now i basicly have half a floor of a building for me :P If you are tech savy and stress resistant its a cool job. I been doing it for 10 years and made good progression money wise.

getting a company to take a chance and hire you, thats the hardest part, trust me, im still looking but you are right, most of the people ive talked to they say they shadow someone at the beginning and then lil by lil you get to do things on your own. gotta keep practicing my active directory

hi i have zero experience in IT but i just applied for any IT related internships. I failed so many some have 3 round interviews so I was very stressed but one company liked me and gave me a chance. I was lucky and thankful now I just shadow a lot of people in the company. i hope i can learn and grow more

Great video, keep up the great work and please create more content. I remember my first day asa HD operator and as a tech people would walk up to me and ask for help, I'd ask them if they have a ticket in, they'd say no. I'd ask them to send in a ticket and I'd help as soon as I can, just because I'm at my desk doesn't mean I'm not working on anything. I'm now a network engineer and the users are still doing the same thing, I refer them to the help desk.
I can relate. I work in school IT support. I had one school that was notorious for teachers not putting in tickets. That was mainly because the previous techs let it slide so teachers would just walk up to our tech area or send students with broken Chromebooks or ask for password resets. I had to have a serious conversation with my boss and the school principal because it was just getting absurd. It got to the point where teachers would drop off stacks of devices in front of the door and not even leave notes or anything. At one point, I had at least 200 devices that I had no idea where they came from and no one asked for them. It was absurd.

I know my first couple years as a help desk technician I asked if I could be a Jr sysadmin or Jr security engineer and they followed through with it and wanted me to get a couple certs and then I was able to work behind a couple people for some months until I was confident, not going to say i'm a vet because a lot of this stuff i'm still learning, but thats def a good idea you have if you haven't already made the move

This video helps, I recently got hired onto a team with a bunch of new people in preperation for a big client for the company coming in. We sadly don't have the luxury of time and it doesn't help that just to get somewhat prepared we've only had a week including two public holidays which has resulted in some steps sadly been skipped. Our management who are wonderful have been working overtime with us to just try and prepare us. I've tried soaking in as much info as I can and this video helps to. My job is a mix of help desk and some more complex stuff.
For those that prefer the digital approach One Note is your friend. Its seriously under represented and I strongly suggest it to anybody. When I go in tmro for Monday I'm going to be reading all of the notes I can that I have written down.
This is good tips! I'm expecting to work in a help desk environment soon (i hope), I'm waaaaay nervous because I don't have any helpdesk experience or IT. But I grad from IT, just haven't hard to find a job where I live.

I'm actually lacking the job experience for an IT help desk job where I'm located, but I'm a strong candidate for a fiber optic internet office support role that I applied for. Maybe I'll finally escape retail after all. In my opinion, any technical support job is a step towards putting my college degree to use.

Helpdedk and desktop support is quite different ..desktop support fix and repair daily helpdesk answeres phones along with working with computers issues from setups to some hardware issues

Good luck. It can be a bit scary at first, but you'll eventually get the hang of it. No one expects you (or should expect) to know everything off the top of your head so don't feel bad if you don't know something. Sometimes there are multiple ways of doing the same task. In some places, you have the flexibility to work on something as you like, and with others, you have to follow specific guidelines. Take notes. You will probably be trained on a wide variety of technologies used in your organization: things like ticketing system, how to reset passwords, applications used in the workplace, etc. If you have down time, familiarize yourself with the different programs and webpages that are used. The more you know how to use them, the better you'll become at being able to troubleshoot and help users. Don't be afraid to Google stuff. It's an invaluable tool. Ask for help when you need it. Try to solve problems on your own, but if you get stuck, ask for help.

Glad it did , yeah if I can’t figure it out I ask one of the networking guys...it’s usually a network problem. For example if I see a ticket asking for some type of permissions ...networking

taking the CTNS ( Computer Technician Network Specialist ) course going on 2 months now but im deciding to take this route once i complete in January , i feel confident to reassemble & dissemble a pc but knowledge wise i dont feel to confident just yet i know within time ill gain the the proper knowledge in order to grow in this field because obtaining my A+ is definitely my goal they make BANK !! BUT any suggestions or advice on your behalf would definitely bring me some type of comfortability
