Copperfield had a setup of two towers on a stage, supporting an arch to hold the huge curtain that would be used to conceal the statue. The TV cameras and the live audience only saw the monument through the arch. When the curtains closed, David waxed poetic while the stage was slowly and imperceptibly turned. I was about 10 when they did this, and I remember my family was able to punch holes all over this with the fake radar to mirrors, etc. We were close, didn't think of rotating platforms.
you do realise its shot in the evening because the statue is still there... they just shut the lights from the statue and rotate all the lights away from the statue and i hope you have heard about the fact that when you rotate a light away from something it makes the sourrounding look even darker.

This brings back memories
