- The highly anticipated Toyota GR Yaris makes an appearance to Driven+ for the first time. And what a car Toyota have produced! This has to be one of the best hot hatchback's of recent years and it goes straight into the history books!
Homologation cars are hard to come by nowadays and it's safe to say they definitely get the love they deserve.
The GR Yaris is worth every penny! - Auta a dopravní prostředky
Video looks incredible mate what a pleasure to film with you can’t believe how it’s come out 10/10
Thanks for the opportunity Brooklyn! 🤝
I was talked into buying my GR Yaris by my local Toyota dealer and man it it is the best fun car I have ever owned and I have had a lot of big muscle cars. It puts a smile on my face everytime I take it down the country roads where I live in Northern NSW in Australia. Great review.
Thanks Jim! Good decision you made
Great review Max. 👍 One thing that videos don't get across though is how nice these cars actually look in person. I was surprised at how eye catching they are, and how they drive. If you're lucky enough to drive one, you'll be blown away at how good they actually perform. This car is beautifully specced too, Kudos to Brooklyn, great car. 👍 🥰
Thank you! Glad you enjoyed it. I agree, Brooklyn has done an amazing job
Great video. Beautiful country, beautiful. We have a mountain mecca for fast cars and bikes that I can see from my place. Every weekend we have endless fast cars including exotics and bikes that make their way from all over to enjoy the thrill only big mountain country can give. Once in the Valley you can pull up and admire all the machinery with a coffee. When I get home next week I’m going to put a deposit down on the new auto Rallye. Really looking forward to it. Vehicles like these are such a lifestyle. Thanks for posting🤘🤘
Thank you and thanks for commenting. You will not regret doing it 😎
Really enjoyed this review and the cinematography was epic. I’ve owned my GRYCP for nearly two years, multiple track days (which Toyota cover under the warranty) and a trip to the Nurburgring. It has been an absolutely epic drivers car. I’m no spring chicken at 50 and I’ve owned lots of cars including 6 Imprezas P1/JDM RA etc and hand on heart the GR is my favourite. It just wins you over with its honest awesome ability.

Thanks for subscribing! They are epic cars! We have 1 space left on our Nurburgring trip if you fancy joining us?
@@DrivenPlus When is it?
Sept 6-9
@@DrivenPlus Unfortunately I’m off to a wedding that weekend.
Not a problem! We also have a space left on our Route de Riviera euro trip in July (17-22nd)
Great review Max. Stunning motor 😍
Thanks Nigel 😎
Great stuff mate 👍 looking forward to more vids
Thank you! There’s more to come!
Max...And Team. Wow! The camera work and editing is fantastic! And what a location. Standards are high! Epic. And speaking of Epic! Oh yes GR Yaris! Already an icon. Beats super cars hands down! I know a couple of owners of [so-called ]'super cars' who have bought a Yaris and use as the weekend fun machine! So incredible is the Yaris. And, although i have never driven one i have a friend who bought one of the first released cars...stunning in black, no mods! Anyway one ride around familiar 'B' roads convinced me there is nothing to match this car. So impressive in every way. Like you Max, i would 'sell my soul' for one of these unqualled machines. Astonishing what this 'hot hatch', rally special is capable of . Nothing comes close for the money. Will be intersting to see what the 'new' upgraded GR Yaris adds to this very, very special car. Thanks Max. Great review!
Keith. Thank you for your kind comment. Brilliant little cars
Some really nice shots on this review, I really enjoyed it. A couple of bits I picked up on - 7:46 all specs have the same brakes, it's just that the calipers are red on circuit pack. You then went on to talk about the tyres being PS4S' (which they are from stock) but the footage showed a PS4 at 8:50. Regardless, these are great cars.
Thanks for the info!
Great video, well made!!
Car is decent too!
Thanks mate! Appreciate it
Those wheels look fantastic.
They are!
Awesome Review mate
Glad you enjoyed it!
Enjoyed that, had mine nearly 2 years and just keeps getting better with a few mods!
Also, pretty sure turning traction off doesn’t alter the exhaust noise!
Glad you enjoyed it! That’s weird as this car is standard software
No, but it does remove the soft limiter.
In my humble opinion (I know I'll get hate for this) I think the front of the GR Yaris looks great, the side profile looks like a cut and shut using two different models of cars and the least said about the rear the better. I wonder if you can get the rally car body kit as that would help with its looks, failing that Zephyr have made a decent body kit for it.That said the engineering of this car will no doubt be brilliant not forgetting how good the drivingexperience is.
Love that road
Love the video mate! What suspension setup is the GRY running?
Thank you! It was Eibach springs
Good video that Max
Thanks Dino!
Best car ever!
You would say that😀
Great review! Where about’s in north wales is this?
it’s the B4391. Bala to Ffestiniog
I’d Love one
Cracking video cracking car cracking location cracked windscreen 😂❤
Love it!
The brakes are all the same across the range, the suspension is slightly different, however the brakes on the circuit pack are exactly the same as the other two models.
Thanks Andy 😎👍
You found the beautiful background for making this video
I'm glad you like it
The day gryaris was released i knew i had to Get one. What A beauty of a car. The Worse part about this car is that i could Get A m2 instead😂
Great car! What rpm did you dump the clutch
Thank you! I will be honest I can’t remember. I’m sorry!
Engine reliabilty was not quite good with first series...I wonder if they managed to fix those problems with new coming from the plant.
What engine reliability issues are you referring to?
Had my 2021 GRY for a couple of years now and the only recall I’ve had was a SW update for the collision sensor. I read the forums and have only heard of a couple of overheating gearbox issues from guys that constantly track their cars.
Was that a quite large crack in the windscreen? Or was it some weird type of reflection?
For sure it's a fantastic car.
However, comparing it to my 2010 BMW 330D, the GR is only 0.5 to 1 second faster to 60 mph. It has a top speed, for the autobahn, that's 50 mph slower than the BMW and it's about 10 real-world mpg worse fuel consumption (partially offset by petrol being about 5% cheaper than diesel in the UK). All of which is more a reflection of what a great compromise car the 330D is.
That was a crack yes. These things happen. 330D’s are great cars but it’s a hard comparison with a GR Yaris
lol I had a 330D M sport chipped many years ago. I have a Gr now - absolutely no comparison in performance on the road. GR romps aways. 330D was a quite nice motorway cruiser tho....
@@gaycha6589 What year was your 330D?
Wish we got the GR Yaris in the states, we got the GR corolla but part of the appeal is the smaller lighter car, GR corolla is really heavy.
I wish we got the Corolla! Do you want to do a swap?🤣🤔
@@DrivenPlus for the size of the car the Fl5 Type R is over all the better car. The Yaris being small is what sets it apart.
Nice video! Just to address two things: 1. wheelbase - longer than 992 Porsche, Evo 1..6, pre-hatch STi, can't really call it short; 2. Toyota Yaris badge - in homologation special's world the badge is meaningless, base Delta was crap, imagine buying Intergrale and someone dissing it due to Delta badge xD Those people don't deserve one of limited run cars and it's great they feel that way!
Thanks for the info!
Yo Max, what stretch of road is this? Rhuthin way?
Possibly the one on the way to Shell Island...
Hey Duncan, it’s the B4391. Bala to Ffestiniog
@@DrivenPlus I knew I'd been up there before. Amazing views.
Great Content, great car. Shame I never got to get you in mine... Engine kept exploding 🤷🏼♂️
Thanks mate! I know it would’ve been great! Shame about the engines though 😒
@@DrivenPlus Pricing out next month for Gen 2 though…
Modern day Lancia Integrale.....then some.
Love north wales
Cracked windscreen. Classic. I love my GR Yaris. I'm taking it to the grave with me.
Love it! 😎
Same as me, I bought mine new 2020, 45,000 miles now, it’s bonkers, In the damp or rain it is incredible. A bargain.
First off North Wales look amazing. Just beautiful. My sister inquired about getting one of these for the North American region, Canada specifically, and the wait times were way out there. Second, this hot hatch has everything you need to get you going and then some. I can’t imagine what the tuning community has in store with this one. Canadas version pushes 300HP , limited slip differentials, 4 piston calipers and the list goes on. Another great review.
Thats all standards in the GR Yaris except it has less power but much less weight than the corolla
Thanks for commenting and you are right. It has everything you need 😎
@@binskee677 I know different markets around the world either have similarities across the board or a few less options on their models. Do the lower HP numbers have something to do with emissions in the UK region?
@@DrivenPlus the price tag is the only negative 😂🤣
🤣🤣
Great video. Alloys don't like the potholes!
I own one, and the Milltek exhausts are too "farty" for my taste.
Thank you! Which exhaust did you go for?
Agree i went for HKS Legomax
Great review, what was that road?
Thanks! B4391
very Integrale..
would quite like that for nippin around tut Dales :) Needs another 100bhp though..
how come it weighs so much? There are 8 cylinder cars lighter than this, let alone 3...
Definitely! A tune would sort that out. I suppose the weight comes from the AWD system?
doesnt help, but look at the size and the fact that it is effectively a homologation special - 19 cwt max with 350+ bhp would be more realistic -
4wd rally special that doesnt break 5 secs to 60 in 2024??? - Seriously?!@@DrivenPlus
can you point me to an 8 pot car around the same price bracket?
i was talking about lbs.....not £ s ;)@@gaycha6589
windshield broken already?
These things happen?
Great video.! Spec of those wheels please? . 🙏👍😎
Thank you! EVO corse wheels
It’s a modern day celica GT4 not sure on lancia
This car is not short wheelbase. The Porsche 911 (2450mm) has shorter wheelbase than the Yaris GR (2560mm)
Ok 👍
It's build for roads like this
Very true
The road in wales all people use to test drive there fast cars.
11:28 needs new windscreen
What road??
B4391
I'd love one if I had 30 grand sitting in my pocket
It's all about the rear end for me,that rear looks like it's being in a accident lol.Other then that it's great engine and drive.
I don’t like gr corolla and would take the fl5 type r anyday over it. But if toyota gave the US gr yaris I would choose this over the type r. Its really a shame they gave the poser corolla and not.
Better than a golf R?
The GR Yaris has more character, golf R is a great choice but you would have more fun in the Yaris for sure
I have both. Yes it's better drivers car
Mega motor, but what is it with CZcamsrs and getting owners in the boot (trunk if your American) to show size😂😂
🤣🤣🤣
Well Troy you could’ve been one of them
That’s not even the newer Yaris GR
And?
No, it is not a rallycar. It is a damn roadcar!
Only "special" thing that car shares with the rally version is the lower roof line.
it is not the homologation car for the current generation. It was supposed to be the homologation car for the past past generation car and would have carried over everything including the engine. Corona has delayed developement there that project was cancelled, thankfully toyot(d)a still produced the GR Yaris. And yes it's a road car but can become a full on rallye 2 car with a few minor mods
However it has far more welds and glue than a standard Yaris to stiffen the body, it also shares no body parts with a standard Yaris, apart from insignificant things like lights and mirrors. So whilst it’s not actually a full rally car, it’s the basis of one. Unlike a standard Yaris, in fact in reality it’s not really even a Yaris, apart from the name.
`The GR Yaris was also a reverse engineered car, basically the Rallye team developed a rallye car they wanted to have and then reverse engineered a road version for it.
........the only thing it shares with the road Yaris is headlights and tail lights. the rest is bespoke for GR. WRC regs changed meaning this version never rallied
I know all this but it still does not make it a homologation special or a rallycar.... Since the WRC rules was introduced in 1997 all WR cars has been based on cars made in 25.000 units per year, and turbo, 4wd etc was allowed to be added, which completely removed all need for homologation specials. The last true homologation special was the Mitsubishi Lancer Evo 6.5 from 2000, the last car to compete under group a rules in 2000 and 2001.
As far removed the GR Yaris is from the normal Yaris, the difference between the GR Yaris and the WRC (that was canned due to covid) and the R5/Rally2 is just as big (infact its massive).
I know people love the GR Yaris and its a great car, but that still doesnt make it something it isnt.
