  • A My Life in Africa adventure through the Kalahari which highlights exactly how tough and remote the Kalahari can be. For many crossing the Kalahari is a bucket list item, for us it's now a tick off the list...
    This is a video documentary of a single vehicle crossing the Kalahari from South to North by two adventurous souls who simply cannot get enough of open spaces and places in Africa!
    We leave Piper pan for Letihau Camp in the Central Kalahari, a very short journey for today but with scenery only the Kalahari offers makes everything breathe taking. Being far far far away from our exit point the following day we decide to move further north and camp in the Deception area. Another evening's fire serenaded by lions in the distance. Sadly we were unable to find the lions this time round but they were extremely close by.
    The next day our goal is achieved and we exit the Kalahari and hit the tarmac for the first time in 6 days. A definite bucket list item ticked off.
    We made it all the way across the Kalahari unsupported by another vehicle.
    Sit back and enjoy the journey North across the Kalahari with us...

      Out of all the times i have been no one has even been able to give a definitive answer to that question, everything is mostly guesses but the most plausible one seems to be an Isuzu, but then again that would only be a guess...

    Hi, thanks for those videos. They help a lot when you try to figure out what to expect when self-driving through CKGR. Do you think it is possible to do the same route in 3 days? We will arrive to Khutse on the 15th in the afternoon and we intend to leave Matswere on the 18th in the morning. Thank you.

    • @MyLifeinAfrica
      @MyLifeinAfrica  Před 6 lety

      Hi, I guess it's possible but all you will be doing is driving without anytime to stop and take it in. Khutse to Bape, Bape to Xade, Xade to Matswere you'll probably exit the park late afternoon without having seen much at all, at least add 2 more days to make it enjoyable. There is no way at all that you will exit Matswere in the morning on your 3rd day!.

    I like your video's pls make one with all equipment and what work and what not. And pls explain the rubber on the steering-wheel and the water pipe running along the snorkel. keep the video's coming pls

    • @MyLifeinAfrica
      @MyLifeinAfrica  Před 6 lety

      Hi Jaco, the rubber on the steering wheel literally is there to make the grip thicker, a thicker steering wheel you seem to not hold as tight as a thinner one when driving off road, it avoids the white knuckle effect.

    • @MyLifeinAfrica
      @MyLifeinAfrica  Před 6 lety

      The water pipe along the snorkel has since been moved, however it's there for easy access from the water tank on the roof. Just makes it easier to not have to try and reach an out of the way tap to get water :-)

    I really enjoyed your video and have now subscribed. I liked your presentation and explanation and was wondering if you can you help me understand something. Firstly I'm an Australian and like you I have a vast wild continent that I overland and explore in my spare time. Australia obviously has its wildlife dangers also and so I understand about being aware of your surroundings, what animal/reptiles/insects are dangerous, where not to swim, camp, walk etc. So my question are, is it not considered dangerous to sleep in a tent with a lion 50m away or is a tent considered reasonably safe protection as wild cats generally don't attack people in tents. My thought are that its the same kind of calculated risk a surfer takes on an unprotected beach and the risk of shark attack or am I wrong. All the best and keep the videos coming...

    • @MyLifeinAfrica
      @MyLifeinAfrica  Před 5 lety

      Thanks Clive, to answer your question regarding the tents... Sleeping in a ground tent with lions around is perfectly safe. There are obvious precautions one needs to follow in order to keep it safe. Lions do not view a tent as a snackbar, it's seen as an object and nothing more. The safest way to sleep in a ground tent in any big game area is to keep things closed. Closing the mosquito netting only is a big no no, you need to close the entire tent up properly, there have been instances where people have been dragged from tents by leaving them open, you leave it open you can expect issues. If a lion were to walk around the tent the best advise given would be to remain quiet and calm, you are perfectly safe. The number one rule in the bush though if you were to be confronted by any wildlife in camp would be to under no circumstances in any regard no matter what no matter how, DO NOT RUN...
      With regard to the sea, i am no diver and if confronted by a shark in the ocean, i would ward it off with the smell coming out of the wetsuit for sure...

      @@MyLifeinAfrica Thanks mate, now I understand. It still sound very scary though. I'm not sure I'd be able to get to sleep in Africa Lol...

    Very nice
    How much are the charges to camp on those open camps?
    Are the children allowed to camp there and is there any safe, fenced and secured camping sites? If so how much if i am using my own car and own equipment?
    And how much is the charges for the main gates?
    I am planning to visit that place with my family August next 2018 year
    Many thanks

    • @MyLifeinAfrica
      @MyLifeinAfrica  Před 6 lety +1

      Hi Hingwe,
      The campsites pricing varies between the different companies that run them. They are safe for supervised children as there is no fencing at all for these camps. You have to use your own car and equipment to stay at these camps, there is nothing provided to you at all. The gate fees are dependent on the passport you have, these fees are charged at a daily rate per person and per vehicle. Send us and email and we can help better understand your requirements and can discuss is further info_at_mylifeinafrica.com
