3rd March Work stops in the shed, the importance of good colostrum and why we are feeding extras

  • So all work is stopping for the guys helping with the shed they need a week off to get their own stuff sorted out and we have kept them more than we should!!! They have been pulling 16 hour days on some days the dedication has been unreal. We have no need to be pushing on at the pace we have been for the last few weeks. We will get the cubicles across and start to put them in!
in 2009 i had no experience of farming or the realities that came with it. That soon changed when I met my other half Roy, I had a job as a carer and in every spare moment threw myself into farming. I had only ever driven a Nissan Micra and had experience with horses, I learnt the hard way as nobody had the time to show me and soon after arriving I found myself mothering on calves to three quarter bred limmy cows. We spent every available moment on the farm between our day jobs. Fast forward to 2016 two children later we moved into our very own farm overlooking the northern Pennines, Laitha.
we are in a transitional period at present and will finally be milking cows and making the final switch later this year, after years of planning and implementing infrastructure we will be milking 120 Jersey cows on two Lely robots. This will be a huge change and a steep learning curve
I will be taking you all along for the ride so hit that subscribe button and see you every other day for farming vlogs.
I am overjoyed to be a farmer. I feel so fortunate every day to wake up and do what I love and even better share it with the world and hope it inspires more young people from Preston to spread their wings and think outside the box the world doesn’t need more childcare workers or hairdressers it needs more farmers.

It won't be there forever. When Anna is approaching retirement the shed will be in need of renewal. It will be unbelievably old-fashioned and she will tell her grandkids that this was state of the art when her parents put it in. Then a lovely clever builder will take jackhammer to your poorly floated concrete. Until then, keep it hidden by rubber mats, and it's just between (the twenty odd thousand of) us. We won't tell ❤❤😉

    However....

Charlotte, take it from me, site the brushes well away from any area or walk way that may interrupt flow into the robots or going out of the shed/into the shed so cow flow is as good as it can be. Any loafing area away from these areas will do, but not in the way of a bobcat or what ever method of scraping dung into the slats your going to use.

Charlotte I may have to change my mind a bit about your concreting as on the night it didn’t look bad 😂. At the same time once the concrete goes off it’s very hard to get a good finish so we can’t really blame you. As you said it’s going to be covered. You’re lucky you didn’t write your name on it 😂😂.

I can sympathise with your deafness, it does make life difficult at times. I think the concrete problem was more to do with your supplier making it too wet, you did the best you could in the circumstances.

We have been chatting about where you should put the brushes, the consensus of opinion is that you should put them as far away from the robots as possible because you don’t really want cows loitering around that area clogging up the access to them. We have brushes and we have moved them twice and are still not particularly happy with there location, our problem is that we don’t have any place where we have an area that is big enough for cows to stand around without preventing the rest of them from free movement, you tend to get dominant cows hanging around the brushes and the lesser ones in the pecking order are afraid to go past them to access food, water or cubicles so that is why we think they should be well away from the robots. Since you asked for opinions you got one. Regards from Ireland.

Spent the day plastering our new dairy wall ( it was the first time in weeks that we didn’t have rain) and if you think you made a bit off a balls up you should see the wall I did! I got distracted by a heifer calving and visitors and it got a bit dry for floating. I will have to stick another coat on it during the summer just to cover it up but at least it should be weather proof for the moment. The lads have been slagging me all evening because I insisted on doing it today and they were left to do my work as well as there own which meant that no one had a handy Sunday ( I think they were delighted that I had made a balls of it) just because I couldn’t bare to look at the block work which was actually pretty good, but not the finished product. Just as a little bit of an aside I think you probably know this but you need some protein to get a good strong colostrum, energy for bigger lambs , fitter ewes and protein for lots of milk ( including colostrum) . Regards from Ireland.

You could throw a floor grinder over the concrete if your were really worried about it it would only take a couple of hours to sort it. Next time if it wont float dont be afraid to throw/spray some water on to get the top to fat back up, its setting not drying out.

I’d get advice on the brushes in relation to cow movement. It would seem ideal close to the robots, but there may be a danger that boss cows will stick to them and many put off the weaker cows from coming into the robots. They would certainly put off cows from going from cubicles to the passage until hunger kicked in if there wasn’t an alternative route. I’ve no experience of robots.
As far as the extra cubicles/stalls, will the robots be able to shed into a pen? But regardless, you will need to walk your cows to stalls/crush. Done quietly it’s pretty easy walking dairy cows around as long as the route is clear and they don’t have escape routes. So you need to envisage walking down the passage and what will stop them looping up the next one etc to get them to these cubicles if this is how you are thinking of using those stalls.
Hopefully you have already thought of it in relation to getting cows to the robots if they aren’t in the mood.

The whole keeping kids off machinery on the farms that were born on ,both you and roy are responsible people and i believe if kids were taught that knowledge at a early in a responsibly ,it woukd be great for their development etc ,i know helmets on quads are legally required here now ,but that is a lot of little pricks destroying land parks etc with quads ,scramblers etc given to them by ftards of parents for xmas etc and they allow them to rally farm lands with livestock on it etc ,but you cant teach your children the responsible way to use machinery is shocking live your videos mrs ❤

Cow brushes are fab but beware they make a lot of mess with the hair they remove so it maybe nice to be near a volley washer point if wanta blast the area hair free occasionally and are very unfriendly towards scraper tractors and machines as they hang out and have been known to leave battle scares on passing machines so try to avoid a machine highway.

Hi Charlotte, you have a great team doing the concreting and as you say there is a slop on all areas so the fluids run to the channels. Gary and Dean have worked so much and they can go home to Wales and see his family. It also gives you and Roy a breather, so you can sit down and take stock of whats coming next. Anna did a good job with the camera again and you are correct not to take her on the 4 wheeler or tractor. They can be deadly. Thanks for showing your big build. Chris from Victoria, Australia 🇦🇺.

The dumper was a tough one tho as it had a hand crank to start the engine

Charlotte, just a suggestion with regards to the positioning of the brushes. As these will take a lot of "abuse" and "play" from the cattle, its better that they are anchored into a RSJ such as at the end of the isles before the loafing area. Don't attach them into a block work wall as the blocks will probably give out before the brushes do. Ask Tom Pemberton if you need any advice about positioning, anchor bolts etc.

I would put the brushes in a low-traffic, but not too far out of the way, area with enough surrounding space so the cows can take their time to enjoy a good scrub without being disturbed by or in the way of the others.

Hello there. There was none of that red tape when we were young. I drove every thing on the farm. I was driving a tractor at 8 year's old. The best machine drivers come off farms. It all cost today and it you that as to foot the bill. Not the ducking government. A lot of health and safety is bullshit. At the end of the day it's common sense.

God I hope you were joking about the being in a tractor under the age of 12 thing?!?! My grandfather had me running a bulldozer pushing fill off an 80 foot tall embankment when I was 8 years old, over here in the states the farm is the only place where all the safety rules that apply to most every other industry don’t apply, thankfully might I add! My family did excavation but we lived near severely farms, horses and a small dairy and I couldn’t imagine having grown up any other way, driving tractors and everything related to such at a young age made me who I am I I couldn’t imagine growing up any other way
