  • Pachelbel's Canon aka Canon in D is the name commonly given to a canon by the German Baroque composer Johann Pachelbel in his Canon and Gigue for 3 violins and basso continuo It is his most famous composition. It was originally scored for three violins and basso continuo and paired with a gigue. Both movements are in the key of D major.

its taken me seven whole years to find this song...my mom used to play this for me when I was a baby. when i couldn't go to sleep, she would take me into the guest bedroom and sit down in the rocking chair, and she would play this song...ever since I was old enough to know the tune, i had hunted for this song. i knew my mom wouldn't know what the name was, but I coolant describe the tune to anyone else. then a few days ago, in music class, a boy in my class sat down at the piano and played this song. I was speechless. I ran to my music teacher and asked her what the name was. she told me, and i scribbled it down in my notebook. all i wanted to do was run home and look it up and find it. its taken me a few days to get around to it, but finally I've found it. now all those memories of sitting in that old rocking chair with my mother are all coming back to me..

I grew up listening to this. It always calmed me. It contains a range of emotions for me in my 50 years on this planet. From love to despair. My mother played it throughout my childhood and it was a song we could share without the need for a single word between us. My beautiful mother passed away unexpectedly in 2018. She survived 38 years of mental and emotional abuse only to die by her abuser’s hands. She left many times and returned to him, too scared to permanently leave him. Domestic violence comes in many forms. Sometimes there are visible scars and bruises and other times the pain runs so deep you can’t see it. If you know of anyone being abused physically, mentally or emotionally, please extend a hand to them. Help them up so they can help themselves. ❤️ RIP Mama (1945-2018) You were an Earth Angel to many but to me you were my mommy and my best friend. I miss you more than words can say.

I honestly don't know why, I see all these people commenting about how this piece of music holds an emotional, sentimental or has some form of value or importance to them in some way to the point in their life. But to me I have no such connection. I have no reason to get choked up or brought to tears when I hear it.
Yet I do none the less. I don't know why, I've listened to it for year after year and I just can't understand why, but it gives me a feeling like nothing else ever has. I've loved, I've lost people, been happy and overjoyed, sad and abandoned by friends or other experiences, I've experienced depression and fought through it, I've experienced stress from work and exams, I've felt worry if I'm doing the right thing or if I'm good enough. I've felt such a vast array of emotions through my whole existence on this planet yet this one song. That alone is the one thing that has and likely will ever make me feel this way.
Maybe that's the thing that makes it special to me in of itself.
The only way I think I can put into words how this song makes me feel, is alive. It feels like somebody has taken life itself and breathed it into a song. A painful and beautiful tapestry that somehow makes me remember everything that has ever happened.
Whatever reason you're listening to this song, whether it be because it's relaxing, it reminds you of something, or you just happened to find it on youtube and checked it out from interest and happened to enjoy it, while this is probably cliche to say, I hope you have a good day.

@@rowg9202 I feel like the fact it has no lyrics makes it more powerful, this isn't a popular opinion, but I like lyric-less music better than music with lyrics, if you can convey how you're feeling through music along, if no words are needed to express exactly what you're trying to say, I feel like it sounds more beautiful and I have never found a song that does as good a job as this one, the amount of meaning you can find in each individual note is astounding, and adding lyrics would ruin it since it does such an amazing job without them. :)

When I first heard this piece, that day my grandad had a really hard heart attack, he nearly died.
At the night this day I went to my favourite streamer on twitch and told him what happened. So he put this song for the rest of the stream just to make me feel better, and it sure did. It meant a lot to me and since then it's my favourite song.
It was 3 years ago and my grandad managed to pass through it, but just 3 weeks ago he passed away.
Since then I listen this piece every day, and it makes me happy and remember all the good things i lived with my grandad.

I do not usually comment on this type of music, this is why I got in to art , this is the sound of falling in love , fighting for a cause, knowledge of power , longing for something greater , preying for justice to fall for once on those who have corrupted the world . Mercy for those who need it. . achievement of a life long goal . The love of father to son, A dream of peace fulfilled. the hearts desire met face to face . so few people ever do anything this wonderful, It serves to remind me that there is a nobility in the soul of man and woman. There is a God in all of us . This is the proof of that , Amen

It's sentimental and the only thing I have left from him, so Daddy acquiesced and held it for his baby girl. I've played since ~ 5 and Canon In D has always been a favorite. You people don't have to compare this music to any other. You can't compare music genres to each other. Music is universal now, you can listen to whatever you like, music is not qualified by the process of making it nor by the people who listen to it.
Different types of music triggers different emotions. Tbh I listen to this, dubstep, shoegaze, indie, countryish styles and many more. I listen to classical when I feel like relaxing or want to feel more uplifted and if I feel like having a rush of confidence and energy and feel like partying I listen to dubstep. Tribal people in Africa listen to banging noises of sticks and stones and still enjoy it. As long as the frequency of the noise you hear and it's harmony fits, it's music.
    Justin Bieber and Nicki Minaj?
    That's another story...

Peter Griffin i urge you to reconsider 3/4 of your statements.
have you ever seen the science documentary "Masaru Emoto : Water is Life"?
you can play classical music next to a sample of water and then freeze the water, it will look beautiful and structured.
you play heavy metal or dubstep next to water and then freeze it, and it looks like sewage.
did you know that color has the same affect as sound does on your psyche?
did you know that an instrument such a cymbal is thought to have a color as well?
just as a painter uses reds, yellows, and whites to paint a sunset - you can do the same with tone and harmonics.
dark colors seem gloomy, bright colors seem alive.
music is IN FACT qualified by the method it was made and it's intention.
not all music is intended to benefit you.
infact to impress this FACT upon you, i want you to be aware there are musicians who think music is as a magic spell... the same as those pentagrams drawn in a circle, they believe their music/magic will bring them money, love, power, etc.
im not saying that every music artist in dubstep is going to be negetive, but it's the composition, lack of actual harmony, and the intention of the music that isnt healthy.
but to be honest, most artists arnt even aware of the micro and macro effects of their music, they basicly emote some kind of catharsis transposed upon a beat.
it becomes a problem when people soak in other peoples catharsis music and just absorb all that sickness.
i see it on the faces of teenagers today. they walk around pretending that they're their favorite music artist, emulating their mannerisms and haircuts... complaining about how the world mistreated them when in reality they have had an awesome life and nobody has mistreated them.
and it's from the music they listen to !!
i also compose music myself so i have a specific insight into this subject.
basicly to summarize, you CAN and ABSOLUTELY SHOULD compare music genre's.
it is not healthy to hold negetive frequencies / vibrations, because it is destructive.
Masaru Emoto : Water Is Life.

    This is a special arrangement.
I first came across it in Florence. I was walking alone, eating a 3 scooped ice cream I’d treated myself to. Those were sad times and those walks were hard. Heavy footsteps and a painfully crowded mind. Everything was a whirl and almost useless. I was walking some of the most beautiful streets in the world and all they felt like were turns and twists in a labyrinth that I earnestly hoped could lead me to some sort of numbing disillusionment. It was both a mindless and motivated exercise; simultaneously.
And then, I ended up at a space where a violinist and a cello player played something incredibly comforting. It was beautiful. Elegant. The sort of exquisite wholeness that comes out of an image and display of a crystal chandelier that sings as a sweet breeze flows through it. Just like the delicate wrapping of warm socks, I felt embraced. I felt again; feelings. I guess. I think I cried.
I never knew that what they played was canon in D. Back home in Finland, a few months later, I did a lazy google search: violin and cello musical arrangement. And, there it was. Thanks google.
Several months later, this was my anthem as I treated myself to a KFC after undergoing a silent meditation for 14 days in Chiang Mai, Thailand. I remember I felt good. Nourished. And I’d wanted Canon in D to both witness this and to remind me of it when I’d seek its comfort again, later in the future.
A year later, while still recovering, I was cycling my way through the ever-busy Amsterdam when I came across another presentation of the canon in D by some street artists under the Rijksmuseum. I stopped and parked my cycle and listened intently. Relishing the music while contemplating on my journey; my progress. I had walked almost a year and although the mind was still very, very chaotic, the constant unease had disappeared. There was sadness, yes, but not the sort that made me miserable. It made life tasteless, yes. And, it was addictive. But I wasn’t miserable.
Another year goes by. Today. In Pakistan now. And I think the misery is gone to. I had to aggressively run 2.5 years so that I was at a space where I could finally look back without being burnt. When memories flash, it still tinges. Yes there is pain. But it’s a guest now and I think it knows that too.

I think this melody is universally beloved because it acknowledges the pain of the human experience which all of us have experienced universally in some way or other, but it also promises that it will pass and reminds us of the beauty of life and everything it has to offer. Encourages us to embrace it in its fullness - with the pain, regrets, hurt, loneliness, happiness, unrequited, lost and unfulfilled loves, moments of connection (to both others and the universe), moments of hope, and moments of despair which we have all of us experienced and which are an integral part of humanity through the ages.
