Oh now this is proper content, very exciting crossover! Hank as one of the "elderly" of internet people has a lot of great insight to the world wild west. Thanks for having him on, Jon.
Hank's phrase "diversifying your identity" is such an important thing for this day and age. Don't tie your entire personality to one thing that you do or are known for.
But, he also says, “Everything that is on the Internet is me, but not everything that is me is on the Internet.“ So he both diversifies and limits his exposure.
Anyone who regularly listens to or watches Offline should pick up Hank's books. Some of the most astute and well-informed speculative fiction about the social internet you could find.
What absolutely blows my minds is that I'm 43, and the internet was just really kicking off when I was in high school. Even then...teachers would tell you "Don't believe everything you see/read on the internet." These were chat room days, stuff like that. Really basic, dial up stuff...and even then they knew better. How has this changed? It's crazy.
I adore Hank Green. He has some of the most cogent and distilled views on how this technology affects us all. And how to operate in its environment in a truly positive way. On top of that he’s a killer educational content creator and funny as hell.
Neat! Two of my favorite nerds. 😄 Another delicious Sunday morning, sitting on the floor, mesmerized by the conversation. 💕 Typically, I’m doing something as I’m listening, and today I realized that I stop doing anything else when I pull this weekly piece up. Having walked away from being active online for many of the reasons you talked about, so much of this particular conversation resonated with me. After I got over the initial grief from the abrupt break, I eventually turned to other interests to let the creativity out. Diversity is a good thing. This podcast is always worth another listen. Thanks, guys.
I am a late adopter of online content, being in my 60's. It "feels" like television to me, but I recognize that it is more like a radio call-in talk show, with a bazillion channels. I am on CZcams for content, Facebook (not Meta) for catching up with friends and family and for local news. I am not on, nor do I envision joining, TikTok, Twitter, Instagram or Pinterest, even though I am a creative person and some Pinterest might be useful/inspiring. Interesting to hear some "natives" of the digital world discuss its culture and evolution.
I am in my 50's and have been on Pinterest for some time. It has changed quite a bit but you might find some use with it. Give it a try. EDIT: Instagram is also a good one. I have been increasing my content and presence. Tik Tok? Hmmm... haven't quite figured out what I want to do with it although I do have it.
The interview I've been waiting for! Hank and John Green are the first people my kids watched, on CZcams. They were preschoolers and LOVED the joke videos and science videos. And they introduced this 50+ year old mum, to what good could come from this crazy creator content. Every channel that came out of their brains brought so much joy and excellence to the internet!
That's amazing. I'm really glad to hear your kids' introduction to CZcams was via John and Hank. Couldn't have had better folks for them to be interested in online!
@@waywardmind It really was. These guys (and their community) became the benchmark for expectations of online communities. They grew up experiencing the non-toxic side of the internet. And grew up knowing that there was a huge world out there, full of curious, helpful people. The success of Hank and John's content only proved that you don't have to cater to the worst part of humanity, to be popular. And I love them for that!
Thank goodness I found John & Hank, even if I just did in my 60's. Their first video I ever saw was about sidewalks and how they reflect and enlighten humanity 💜✌️
OK this is the third Hank Green that came up on my reccs today and I've watched them all cuz its my day off. Subscribed to the podcast a few days ago not having heard him before. Sometimes the algorithm works in my favor. 🙂
Incredible!! Hank Green is right up there with Crooked Media as one of my favorite reliable sources of information. I know Hank probably has his own thing going on, but just imagine how awesome it would be to welcome him or his brother to the Crooked Media family!! Just dreaming over here!!
I love that I've been a fan of Hank and John for so long and my college professors use Hank's science videos to break some of the bigger concepts down. It's awesome.
This was so useful and meaningful, that I went back and took extensive notes on it. How great to have the two of you in the same video. The best of the Internet.
Love the series. Particularly enjoyed this episode with Hank Green. Naturally the conversation in the series often comes to the harm done by social media algorithms. But we often talk about these algorithms as "god-given" and not technical choices that someone/team of software developers make. Would love to hear from guests who work on/analyze these algorithms from the software/UI development perspective rather than the consequence perspective.
huh didn't realize these two have the same vibe before this moment, but they do: they are both enthusiastic, positive and very involved in their own specific interests that make you want to learn from them
Hank said it. They're both "curious." They both have the vibe that people whose brain lights up while thinking and receiving information have. My daughter has the same look - watching her was the first time I really understood what people meant when they said, "that child is so bright." They're enthusiasm for learning and processing information shows in their face and eyes.
Even people over 65 (like me) also like John and Hank Green! I discovered Crash Course first several years ago and loved the entertaining form of teaching history and other topics. (mainly because I have a teaching background myself) A couple years later I accidentally discovered SciShow and one day I wondered whether Hank Green and John Green might be related to each other. I googled it and found out they are! I didn't find Vlog Brothers until just a few months ago. I love what they both do but I think Crash Course is still my favorite. I'm thrilled to hear you say that young people are really enjoying their content!
The way that Hank Green articulates the lesson learnt from that Bill Gates story makes me think that he also just answered the question of why he and John Green can be "not that popular" in the way that other internet phenomena are marked by, but successful by all other community markers. ETA: The second part of the video makes me think maybe most or all of us need two accounts or two ways to present ourselves - separate our personal expression as random member of public and our more professional persona.
Great conversation with Hank Green. I find that I have less and less Internet presence because I really have realized that I don't have to share my opinion about every single thing I read or hear on platforms. It's freeing to "get" that. Jon, you are knocking it out of the park with your Offline interviews.
Thanks for having Hank on. I think he has a similar thing to Jon Hamm, where their big career success didn't come until around 30, and then it was a slow build from there. There's a certain level of maturity and self-awareness that comes from living that long and having an identity apart from the industry you're in (and probably doing therapy before you make it big).
Holy ?!*$. I have been trying to figure out how to replace the church in a non secular way for years! Everyone thought I was weird so it's awesome to hear someone else talk about it. Thanks Hank.
This guy seems wholesome af. Apparently I’m subscribed to his channel but he hasn’t come across my CZcams feed?! I’ll have to intentionally seek him out.
I knew crash course was big but having come to vlogbrothers via old CZcams it is somehow just now hitting me that Hank is the counterpart of my Bill Nye school experience...fuckin wild That aside what a wonderful, thoughtful and thought-provoking episode. Very neat collision of minds here!
6:17 I haven't listened to Hank's answer yet, but I can tell you why I'm a Nerdfighter for life: John and Hank are relentlessly good, honest, smart people who care about other people and make content that's interesting and useful. They don't tell anyone to leave but are not going to be to the taste xXDude69Bro420Xx, so they've made a genuinely safe space for nerds to be nerds.
Awesome interview. Nice to see the narrative of the former CIO narrative being ripped apart. Also every time Article sponsors the pod you must use the Boston accent!!
Hank! I love when my worlds collide. I'm old. I mostly stopped watching television around the time that CZcams was gaining popularity. I like comedy and news shows mostly and between CZcams and later Twitter and blogs my television viewing time fell by the wayside as I spent more time online.
When Hank talks about the internet having positive and negative effects on the world, he's pretty much only talking about social media, which is only one part of the internet. The access to information the internet provides is such a massive positive effect that even the negative aspects of social media cannot come close to dampening it. The fact that anyone in the world with internet access can go to the Red Cross website, Google can translate the page into 133 languages, and suddenly we know something that could save a life is incredible. Accurate accounts of history being widely available online combats harmful government propaganda which can be used to prevent or end wars. The ability to educate people who don't have access to a physical school is so precious. "The internet is man getting fire. This is the 21st-century light bulb. Do you know how many lives will be changed, be saved, how many girls will become educated? Do you know how much medical knowledge, how much information will become available to people who've been kept in the dark?" Yeah, it's a quote from Grey's Anatomy but Jade made some great points.
Ooh Hank washed and styled his hair and buttoned up his fancier flannel to come on crooked. I was offline (surgery prep, process and recovery) when all your mid-late Feb stuff aired so I'm catching up... Zefrank is the actual godfather... he needs to be on Crooked next lol! We just finished SUCH a brilliant P4A that I sure as fk hope Crooked's beautiful nerds donated loads to! (I'm a first thousand vlogbrothers subber though on a diff account I used to actually post some vids from)... nerdfighteria is my second home no matter where on the physical planet I am! Gosh I miss events w/Green brothers (even if John doesn't miss flying on Delta to platinum titanium or whatever status).
It's so weird hearing him say John and then it cutting to Jon Favreau's voice/face and not John Green's. My podcast ears and CZcams eyes are confused lol
This is rad. Basically my high school science teacher chilling with my college political science professor.
Oh now this is proper content, very exciting crossover! Hank as one of the "elderly" of internet people has a lot of great insight to the world wild west. Thanks for having him on, Jon.
I think the word you were looking for was elders
Hank's phrase "diversifying your identity" is such an important thing for this day and age. Don't tie your entire personality to one thing that you do or are known for.
"I have already lost touch with a couple of people I used to be...." Joan Didion
But, he also says, “Everything that is on the Internet is me, but not everything that is me is on the Internet.“ So he both diversifies and limits his exposure.
Why not? I mean it's probably healthy to do that, but on the other hand creating a personal "brand" seems to have a monetary advantage.
Anyone who regularly listens to or watches Offline should pick up Hank's books. Some of the most astute and well-informed speculative fiction about the social internet you could find.
I second this!
Now that is a collab I didn't see coming!
Right? I'm delighted it's happening, though :)
never in a hundred million eons would i have imagined it happening
Neither did I but seeing it now it makes perfect sense
Maybe a Kenyon college connection.
@@ayrrisaunario6847 That was a Fozzie Bear wacka wacka level joke.
My online communities are colliding. This mashup is what I need today.
Two of my favorite podcasters!!!!!!! The best crossover!!!!!
Love the Green brothers, both share common kindness and intellectual insight about almost anything. Both are really funny and fun guys.
It's crazy.
Teachers are smart people.
Me too. I stayed on the chat rooms till the sun came up. I still think about the atheist nun and a guy I liked a lot.
Yep. And in 1998 I was at uni and we were very much warned about sourcing any information from the internet. One dodgy site and you failed.
This makes me so happy! Hank is a national treasure
First, I take offense that one has to be young to be a nerdfighter. Second, Hank Green is a national treasure. Thanks for interviewing him.
Thanks for inviting Hank! My husband and I, both retired teachers btw, played Hank and John’s videos in our classes . Mad respect!
I adore Hank Green. He has some of the most cogent and distilled views on how this technology affects us all. And how to operate in its environment in a truly positive way. On top of that he’s a killer educational content creator and funny as hell.
As members of both communities, this crossover is just perfect

I LOVE HANK!!! His work has been a great addition to so many folks' lives.
Always so weird when two people you admire from different worlds work together. Great to see you two collaborating!!

Hank Green is awesome, glad to see him talking to John. This should be an scheduled yearly episode.

Started watching hank in 2009. Love getting to hear his insights! It’s so wild that he was about my age when he first started. Time does fly.

I almost left a comment a couple weeks ago advocating for Hank Green to be a guest. Perfect selection
Crash Course History is one of the first true educational content I really enjoyed on YT.
I love that I've been a fan of Hank and John for so long and my college professors use Hank's science videos to break some of the bigger concepts down. It's awesome.
This was so useful and meaningful, that I went back and took extensive notes on it. How great to have the two of you in the same video. The best of the Internet.

I feel that this marvelous collab is a huge step toward your eventual interview with Stephen Fry.

Great conversation - would like to hear more from Hank Green.
Heck yes. I am here for this collab.
I just saw the notification and this already made my evening! It's the absolutely perfect crossover!!!

Great podcast. Truly enjoyed hearing Hank today.
this episode is like that old 80's Reese's commercial ; "You put peanut butter in my chocolate!!!"
I will say, when I went to University at the age of 45... I could not have received my Bachelor's degree - without Crash Course & Sci-Show
