I Hydroseed for a living and what this man says is %100 correct. If you don’t get some organic nutrients in the ground first, the Hydroseed will take ,grow about a couple inches, then die . once it is no longer germinating in the Hydro mulch the roots will be traveling down, looking for nutrients .

Plants require a certain ph range to grow well and really thrive. Out of that range creates a limiting factor to growth. Think of a short stave in a wooden barrel. The barrel will only hold water to the height of the short stave.

  • @shitloveaduck

I have heard this all before. It works! We used a lot of fertilizers to bring back soil that was really sandy. It would grow corn, but there’s a lot of stalks and debris after 4 or 5 years of that crop. That stuff takes another 2 - 3 years to break down, but then, again with fertilizer, we could grow grains. That can be cut high to add more organics that break down faster than the corn stalks. Where we could, we would plant alfalfa specifically with a bit of white clover right after the corn. Grow it 2 years and once the roots were about 3 feet deep or more, we would till it under rotating about the top 8 - 10 inches of soil. Then grains or alfalfa would go back in. We could also plant the corn again if we needed the feed. We recovered a LOT of sandy soil that way, but as you can see, even with about 3-4 inches of real topsoil, the sandy soil took years to recover after the initial 2 years it would produce crops.
Gotta have fertilizer. Once the grass is established, it will deplete the soil nutrients from the compost sooo fast! Fertilizer of a regular top dressing of compost or loam will be necessary for it to remain viable for several to even 10 years before the grass will be truly self sustaining by mulching it. Mulching always helps but is not enough by itself.
Where I live now, there are sod farms. They look amazing, but are continually stripping topsoil when harvesting. When there’s only 8 - 10 inches of topsoil, you prepare your soil as much as you can before seeding another crop of sod! They use a lot of compost and loam to keep the depth of the topsoil consistent & stable. Then fertilizer, fertilizer. Nitrogen is applied with other fertilizers that promote root growth initially, then a heavy dose of nitrogen and whatever soil tests determine is needed.
What you are doing is definitely an excellent plan for soil recovery, but it’s not a “one & done” process for such nutrient deficient soil. If you can get some creeping grasses established, the erosion will stop and the stems catch the runoff building nutrients & organic matter, if that’s what is in the runoff. If the runoff is clay, it’s detrimental, it will start to choke off the grasses. Then you core the grass and add compost as a top dressing. The nutrients & organic matter can get down into the soil again stop it from compacting as well.
We recovered just over 2700 acres using organics (not compost, that was cost prohibitive and hard to find that much 😂) because the corn loves sandy soil with enough water (irrigation land) and fertilizer (tons & tons, tandem loads, every spring).
A side bonus to the grass bein established is the humidity will come up and help keep the area green. It just helps though, still gonna need water in the heat you have been getting.
    You’re getting there Geoff!!

Geoff you need compost, composted pig, cow, sheep and horse chit. I would get a commercial chipper and chip, all the brush that Chris has generated and mix a couple of loads of chicken and Turkey chit in with the wood chips and you will have some very good compost.
There are poultry farmers in Oklahoma that take all the wood chips from the power companies and blend the poultry chit in with the wood chips, run a soaker line on top and cover with big heavy black plastic and every 2 months they remove the plastic and turn the compost, and in about 9 months they have good rich black compost.
Even Oklahoma City is composting brush from storm damage and have drop off location for tree limbs and yard waste like grass clippings and leaves, and they blend with poultry chit, and stockyard cleanings feed lot cleaning.
    Very good rich black compost

We sent a soil sample off to see what is the best soil enhancements we could add to get grass to grow. They recommended green paint as the least costly. The soil there was worthless. That was almost ten years ago and it still won't grow weeds. I don't remember them suggesting kudzu.

Very likely you will need a fair amount of lime to start with. Ph needs to be about 6.2 to 6.5. Having had pine timber on the site is a really good clue for acidity below 6. Lime it now to correct acidity and mix it into the dirt and put compost on top of that and scratch that with a disc. I have done this on pasture for livestock and planted cover crop to grow a green manure crop that was cut in to provide some organic matter and then planted a permanent pasture grass. Definitely not an immediate gratification project; but, yielded great results.

Trench method works but it is not as deep as boring, which is 15 ft where you are in a stable temp of 50, 55 degrees. The beauty of it is it doesn't tear up the area. You can go into the trees because you are under the roots, I've even had the loops run under the house (front to back) to keep it in the lot in town.

    • @markpashia7067
      @markpashia7067 Před rokem

As others commented, this is just to get a stand going. To maintain it will need to fertilize regularly and water in the dry spells or you will lose it again. Just some straight up 13-13-13 fertilizer with a broadcast spreader in spring and fall will do miracles, but if you want lawn you will want a weed and feed at least in the spring to help the grass and hurt the weeds. Basic fertilizer from the ag store is cheap, but weed and feed is costly. And if you can get bulk instead of bagged it is cheaper. On the one side you have the well so watering won't be an issue but the rest might need some sprinklers and pumps from the lake to keep them watered. But first you have to have the organics so the water does not just run off and has a chance to actually soak in. Like everything else it take persistence. And work. And money. And you can actually back off a little in a few years after the roots are well established. Till then it is going to be a chore.

Can't grow grass on rocks. I will say I don't know about Bermuda seeding. I know if you use Bermuda sprigs, it will grow on red clay. I placed it on a steep bank of highway right of way. It was washed out and couldn't mow it, and I got tired of having to do string trimming to keep weeds off. I took a skid loader and smoothed it up. I planted two rows, one at the top and halfway down. I kept it watered and now mow it with my zero turn. No more washing when it rains. Good luck. You could water it from the pond and each day move the sprinkler.

@@BealyGood makes sense. So many variables with top coating and the weather, you have to get it right and you have to have a little luck sprinkled in…. You’re smart to cut off the camera as soon as price came up, I know it’s going to be a costly endeavor but your options are few. I know it would add to the cost but you might explore some sort of fabric to cover it that would allow the grass to grow. NWS reports that it’s going to be a very active hurricane season this year and I’d hate to see a “gully washer” blow through and destroy your investment. For your sake, I’m hoping for the best of luck. You need a win on this one.

I'd put deer food plot mix down this fall with kale, turnip, radish, etc mix from your local feed store. Too late in the year to get the grass you want to grow.

wrong fall is the best time of year for growing grass, been doing it for 40 yrs, you get light rains and cool temps below 80 which fescue loves...august in the south is a bad time of yr for growing grass September is perfect

Lake pines has a good point, planting cover crops especially if you can graze them in place is a great way to build soil.
If compost is cost prohibitive, growing the organic matter and knocking it down and stomping it in can be very effective, like I mentioned elsewhere, if you could get a local farmer to bale graze, followed up with cover crops, it could be just the ticket to restart soil biology

Grass Expert: "I'm used to dealing with farms in this area with this soil type, and I use the term 'soil' loosely, its more like rock type. My expert recommendation is to use what (lemons) you got and build a World Class Competition Horse Shoe Facility, whatever you got here is perfect for those expensive professional sticky clay horse shoe pits, pound in some 4' chunks of No.4 rerod and you're golden. I'm sure many have told you to go pound sand in your life before, so now you go pound clay, same thing, different clay pounding day. The only other profitable use for this stuff is to bury radioactive waste in. In preparing for this recommendation, I read some of your viewer comments, the Rock Garden or Depression Era Dust Bowl comment seemed to be your only other viable alternatives. The only thing I can figure that will grow on this farm is a Chia-Pet on the window sill of your kitchen sink."

@@BealyGood Grass Expert 2, The 2nd Opinion: "In researching this parcel of land and house, I had to go back to it's original state and usage. I ended up watching 43 hrs. of 'Green Acres' focusing on the 'Haney Place.' Apparently Mr. Douglas was only able to grow gum saplings too, only he called them corn. I plugged the info into my computer and it indicated the best usage for this land was, 'Heavy Artery Range,' till via hard shelling."
