    You didnt show how to clear a permanent code. You just explained what needs to be done before the PCM itself erases the code, not you. No help.

      You cannot erase a permanent code in 2010 and newer vehicles. Only the ECU can get rid of it by detecting that the problem has been fixed. Now how long it takes to do that? No one seems to know the answer to that. Point is really you can ignore permanent codes. They are not hurting anyone being in there as long as your check engine light is off.

    A Note for CA owners who may come across your video when they are trying to pass a SMOG check. You do not have to clear a Permanent code in order to pass a smog check. All you have to do is drive at least 200 miles and do at least 15 warm up cycles (Different from drive cycles) Then the SMOG machine will ignore any permanent codes you have in there.
    Other than getting a smog check there is no need to worry about a Permanent Code in your car. Nothing is broke and there is nothing more to fix. Don't throw any more parts at it!.

    Thank you - it was a little rushed but I just played it again - drive cycles is not common knowledge at least for me. The smog check tech won't offer the simple just drive it for a while thing that a mechanic does - it's frustrating and ends up costing $$$ while I think something is badly wrong with the car. It is kinda sleazy especially in California that the cars computer does these test / drive cycles which have specific range of aspects that must be met in order to pass a smog check... meaning that you will get charged for a test that isn't what a smog check use to be but something a scanner will provide as far as if it's a pass or not - before going for the test so you just know it will pass... otherwise it's pay again and again for the problem... it's actually crazy!

    • @stevew9563
      @stevew9563 Před 8 měsíci +2

      A drive cycle is just a certain way to drive your vehicle that enables it to run it's tests. It's slightly different for every vehicle but most of the time just standard street and freeway driving is enough to perform the tests. Some cars you have to get really specific and try to do it exactly as the drive cycle wants. So really just depends on the car you have.

    Interesting what you said about the permanent codes on the newer years. I just ran into this yesterday and i have an innova computer that couldn't erase it. This is the first time I've ever had that problem as it's always deleted bad codes till now.
    So i think I've cured the problem and i take it i need to drive it to erase it....
    My issue appears for now to be generated from a dead battery i was unaware of after attempting a remote start from inside the house 3 times not knowing the battery had died. This dropped it to 8 volts and i believe this caused a TCM code to pop up. At least i pray that's all that happened.
    2019 Chrysler 300. I haven't driven it yet, i hope this is correct as I'm worried how it's going to handle shift points when i get on the road with another battery.
    But hey, others say you can short the battery cables for several hours and remove these type codes any thoughts on that?
    Thanks for your insight!

      Permanent DTC's are special codes used so you can't fake a passing emissions test. They don't want you clearing all your DTC's right before you pull in to get the car inspected. With normal DTC's that are not hard faults, you clear the codes and wait for them to come back. Permanent codes are the opposite. You clear the codes and wait for them to go away. They give the PCM enough time to determine if the problem was really fixed, or if you just did a reset. People sometimes get confused because permanent DTC's are not really permanent.

    That information is wrong. A driving cycle means that the car cooled down to at least 120f and warmed up to at least 170f. Other than that it won't count as a driving cycle, at least on Toyotas 2010+. You could manage to have a water hose blasting cool water on your plugged temperature sensor(no need to remove from the car) to trick the computer that driving cycle happened 😊

      What you describe is commonly called a "Warm Up Cycle" a "Drive cycle" is something different. A drive Cycle is a specific way to drive a car to complete the monitor tests. It may actually perform a Warm up cycle while you are doing a drive cycle but generally a warm up cycle does not need any specific driving pattern, in fact you can do it just idling in your driveway.
