Josh Giddey and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander Are the Funkiest Young Duo in the NBA | J. Kyle Mann

  • Fresh off being one of the worst teams in the NBA during the 2020-21 season, Sam Presti and the Oklahoma City Thunder are still slowly attacking their rebuild. In doing so, they've assembled a group of unusual yet talented players-but do these odd pieces add up to anything worthwhile? In this video, J. Kyle Mann takes a look at their roster while focusing on the dynamic between fourth-year point guard Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Josh Giddey, the deft passing rookie from Australia.

I mean you totally nailed it. OKC content in the national media is... rare to say the least, and even when it arrives it usually seems like that person watched a few highlights and called it a day. Fun to see someone put a lot of the thoughts I've had here and there into a single cohesive spot. Really hope Giddey can become a respectable shooter, seems like the key to unlocking him from a good starter to All-Star potential.

Both these problems could have been fixed in this draft, well just have to see….

Obviously trades are in the cards but if I were them I wouldn't trade anyone but Poku. You need to get Poku's trade value. Send him to Hawks, Pacers, Hornets, or any other small market team is both OKC and Poku's best bet for development.

I’d like to think the blue print for them playing as a duo is Harden/CP3 in Houston. Shai is the Harden as a high usage isolation scorer who draws double teams and can hit shooters because of how downhill he is and his ability to penetrate defenses.
Giddey would be the oversized CP3 who can come in during staggered lineups with Shai and play a more traditional point guard role going around watering plants and feeding guys good looks. Especially in the pick and roll game. Like Kyles said it will come down to Giddeys shot and how much he can be an effective scorer. He has a nice floater but his overall shot definitely needs work, but at least he has the overwhelming confidence to keep shooting and not get down on himself like many young players do when their shot isn’t falling (looking at you Ben Simmons).
Also Kyle I think Tre Mann and some Ty Jerome will end up providing more of those self created 3s that you were talking about OKC lacking.

I think the key for giddey is the jumper, I don’t think he’ll ever be a volume scorer in the paint, he lacks the physicality for it. And if he’s gonna play next to Shai he doesn’t have to be, but his jump shot looks awkward as hell and we’ve already seen with Ricky Rubio what you get when you have a great playmaker who can’t score.

@@nicolascaballero1320 I agree working on the jumper unlocks his full potential, but disagree with your comments on his scoring in the paint. As a 6’8 guard, he’s already shown he’s willing and capable of using his height to hit floaters over big men, stop & pop jumpers, and utilizing his size to take on any defender, 1 through 5, for clean, unexpected layups when he has the angle. If he wasn’t attacking the paint he might as well just be any 6’3 facilitator with good vision, but his size adds another dimension that keeps defenders honest, forcing them to respect his drive game, freeing up even more wide open teammates to pass to.

i liked his gaming coming from australia and still do, but i don’t see it. i don’t think he’ll ever shoot efficiently enough to be a major factor. his shot needs to be overhauled. i hope im wrong tho. he is still a teenager after-all.
      (edit)
maybe his shot doesn’t need an overhaul. his mechanics aren’t too bad, he just shoots a set shot which has its pros and cons.

@@MacLaw3084 im from australia and same city he's from, and I've seen him shoot. he's a great shooter, i mean they all seem like that before they join the NBA, but yea he's great at it, just needs some adjustments but he was known for many things, and shooting wasn't excluded , just wait it out

@@fr3tbuzz. sorry to be a downer but giddey is absolutely not a “great” shooter or even a good shooter, maybe in practice but im talking about games. im sure in the games you watched him play he made plenty of baskets. but he was not known for his shooting when drafted- decent at best. 40% fg, 29% 3pt, 69% ft (australia) is not great or even good for a pro. and those percentages are notably worse this year as a rookie (39% fg, 25% 3pt, 65% ft) which is to be expected. also, great shooters usually shoot freethrows at a high %. his mechanics arent terrible its just that he shoots a set shot. im not hating on him, i hope does he becomes a great shooter. he’s just not there yet. but its fun watching the aussies make the transition to the nba.

Fantastic video as always!! I am very curious as to how Sam Presti will manage the 30+ picks he has, will he eventually trade a whole bunch for an established star once he feels the team is ready?

I think in his ideal world, he gets star level talent from the next 2 Thunder picks or the 24 Houston pick. Most of the rest of the picks will be traded for role players that OKC simply can’t attract in free agency.

Excellent video by Mann, with some really interesting takeaways. Beyond the unique skillsets of Shai and Giddey I think some of the stats and choices Presti has made demonstrate a real philosophical pillar where he thinks the league is going and believing in more committee basketball. If the league is getting more talented especially shotmaking, the ability for multifarious shot creation might be the trump card. It seems a team resembling the 13 14 spurs are really kindred to his thinking.
And that overlaps with the stats laid out. Yes league leading off the catch 3s attempts is in part a byproduct of a roster without initiators but it also is one that supports a flowing hockey assist dependent identity. Those skills will be beneficial with possible stars from the lottery, but maybe they get good enough simply getting better shots and winning with five in due time. 5 Boris Diaw's just spitting the rock around is a very fun hypothetical.
Lastly I really like that distinction in playmaking. It's something I have been really fascinated in over the last couple of years which is the nuance of single action passers to as you say players able to create in between scoring entities. I do think the league is starting to see signs or the massive benefit of having the latter. Or at least that those two ways in assisting operate very differently.

I think you finally summed up Poku perfectly. Something I've been struggling to do. And Bazley....man that dude literally reminds me of a little league baseball player who's watching the butterflies in the outfield instead of paying attention to the game. He seems asleep at times and other times, brilliant. It's so damned odd. And don't forget about Maledon, he came with a Tony Parker recommendation (both Presti and Parker were on the Spurs together so.....) hopefully he sorts himself out.
But IMO Tre Mann is going to be the surprise star of the 2021 draft. Going at 18, people will forever be scratching their heads with that low of a pick. Obviously lots can go wrong along the way but his fundamentals seem sound, he's got that ankle breaking step back jumper with accuracy and he seems to have the right attitude/approach to be a super star. I for one am watching him VERY closely and can't wait to see how he does in his 2nd season.

The funkiness is the attraction. I think a lot of us are tired of just watching guys stand around hoisting up one 3-ball after another. I hope the Thunder turn out to be a modern version of the Spurs ball movement scheme - death by a thousand cuts. I'm holding out hope for Poku. He had no pro basketball experience before coming to the NBA last year and proved in the second half of the season that he could actually play.
