DRIVING AN ICON! My First Time in the PORSCHE 911 GT1 STRASSENVERSION

- I never thought I might have an opportunity to drive the iconic Porsche 911 GT1 Strassenversion... but that dream has become reality! I'm at the Porsche Museum in Germany for an experience with the GT1 homologation special version of the 911, let's go!
To compete in GT1 racing in the 1990s, manufacturers had to produce a limited run of road cars and hence the 993-based Porsche 911 GT1 Strassenversion (translating to road version). Along with the like of the Mercedes-Benz CLK GTR, Maserati MC12, the Porsche take was created using the chassis and front end of the 993 generation of the 911, and the rear of the legendary 962 race car.
In total there are only 20 of these cars in the world, with prices in excess of $10 million considering the rarity, historical significance and nature of the machine. This particular car is the prototype that's normally seen on display at the Museum in Zuffenhausen, Stuttgart, and features the 996 look. While two road cars wore the 993 face, this now presents the updated 996 headlights and look, while sporting a 3.2l twin turbocharged flat-6 making 544hp.
Over the years, I have stopped to visit the Porsche Museum on many occasions and it is always an absolute treat of a venue. However, this must be the absolute ultimate experience, to drive a car that has forever been on my bucket list and that I never thought I might one day be piloting. This is it though, we're here, and they've kindly allowed me to take the keys to the 911 GT1 to share what it's all about!
Thanks for watching, Tim

Further separating yourself in the community. This is very literally content you can’t see anywhere else. Your dedication, passion and professionalism are always on full display Tim, thnx for bringing these videos to us
Well said. I might add that we are rewarded by your industry wide trust and style of review.
For awhile Supercar Blondie was giving him a run for his money.
The closest you'll get is when Henry Catchpole did a review on the holy trinity(F1, CLK GTR, GT1) on Carfection.
Great video! But shmee really needs to update his audio and camera equipment.
Absolutely agree.
This kind of comment has probably been written thousands of time but...
I still find amazing after all these years and the growth that your channel has known that you are still genuinely passionate about sharing your excitement and passion about sportscars
Eventhough you have a 2+ millions sub channel you keep being yourself in a humble way, not exagerating anything.
I wish you keep sharing such moments with us these opportunities you get that we can't even think of... this is pure joy & happiness
Seriously! Wow!
You’re living the dream. I went the Stuttgart for 7 hrs to see both Porsche and Mercedes, flipped a coin and went to Porsche first. Spent 6.5hrs at Porsche. So many amazing cars. I took 600 photos. Loving living vicariously through your experience. Closest I got was to hire the Panamera. Just a wow moment. Thanks for sharing Tim.
Kinda funny reading this, knowing that the mercedes museum is a lot bigger with soooo much stuff to read haha
this car has the 996 lights not the 993 which is the more rare version, but none the less an epic opportunity and I'm glad we got to see it!
Exactly, this is a 996 GT1 not a 993 GT1
@@luxerend i don't think there's any functional difference between the two
Like any GT1 racer homologation special, the road version is awful, the race versions are awesome.
it's still very rare, only 20 996 gt1s
@@FriendlyCroockwhat's this got to do with the original comment lol
2 out of 3! Fingers crossed a McLaren F1 GTR finds it's way to you for a drive in the future.
Always raising the bar, epic!
It's exciting to think about!
2 of 4 you forgot about tvr cerbera speed 12
@@bblackbird0there’s literally 1 mate.
@@nathanthomson777 Well this 911 GT-1 is one prototype as well locked in Porsche Museum..
so fingers crossed for Tim to accomplish his dream to review such crazy rare expensive vehicles and to bring us with him along the way..
@@poplaurentiu4148 we’re not on about the GT1
My father was a master mechanic, foreign and domestic, specializing in Porsche/VW. I grew up around the cars at the shop, and at the race track! Thank you, my dad is old now and I send him your videos! Cheers!
I was choking from the excitement at the beginning, Tim's expressions and voice tone really made me smile, and I'm so happy that I could experience this legendary moment all thanks to his dedication to the channel and his followers, thank you!!!
Hey Shmee! This is a classic icon, absolutely love it!
Indeed!
Awesome to see Shmee living the Super Car dream. Huge thanks to Porsche for letting Tim share this with the world.
Shmee, that car quite clearly has the 996 headlights, there is another version with the proper 993 headlights
So humble. No bragging just saying how privileged he feels to be in the position to drive this beast. Great content.
Absolutely thrilled by this video! The sheer joy is palpable every time you shift gears; it's an immersive experience, feeling the intense vibrations even through the audio. Truly remarkable!
Wow! You are officially knighted by Porsche. It must feel awsome 😁
Never fails to deliver! Always great content!
Thanks for watching
I know what you mean, Oliver, but that ought to be 'ALWAYS fails to disappoint',🙂 i.e. always succeeds in FAILING to be disappointing, or 'never succeeds at being bad'.
I think it’s safe to say Tim has seen & driven more cars than most of us will see or drive in our lifetimes. Thank you for sharing your journey Tim!
No sh1t obviously because thats what he does for a living
Wow! Says a lot about you buddy, the amount of trust and respect that people have for you :)
Cheers from Canada
Very true, do you think DDE would ever be trusted with this kind of car? I very much doubt it.
Shmees the only guy whos so professional yet you can still see this childlike joy in his eyes. Incredibly humble guy, stay awesome man!
I love to see you this happy, what an insane video, the GT1, wow! Every second of this was perfection, thank you Shmee!
Brilliant Tim! Thank you so much for sharing such an exceptional drive! It was almost as if we were sat in the car ourselves soundwise ! Cheers, Tom.
you've came a long way, Keep up the great work shmee!
Thanks, will do!
@@Shmee150 Emotional, scary, fantastic and incredible experience Tim - Tank You !!!
What a truly stunning car. Inadequate words I know. Thank you so much for sharing this experience with us Tim.
WOW. There’s no words here to describe what an absolute DREAM this is for so many people. You never cease to surprise, Shmee. Definitely a moment to pinch yourself, that’s a memory for the books! Amazing content, cheers shmee🎉
That car is so utterly insane, I even start to like the 996 headlights.
Even though he strangely claimed multiple times that this was the 993 version, when it is clearly the 996 version
@@-LK34-it’s based on 993
@@SenszR I can assure you it’s not
@@-LK34- it’s ok u don’t have to assure me of anything… I know my stuff. It’s a 993 chassis.
@@SenszR it’s not a 993 chassis at all, the front part of the chassis is based on a 993, but the whole chassis in general is not the same as any 993 car.
This is one of those cars that's just so special. I imagine the feeling you get when you drive them is unlike anything else. Like the Mercedes-Benz CLK GTR Straßenversion, they're an icon from a certain time. Everyone growing up in the '90s probably recognizes them. Great video, Tim!
Well deserved Tim, you are earning the respect of all. Thank you for sharing!
As you said, unbelievable. This has to be up there in your top 5 auto experiences no? Thanks for sharing. Made the homeball all worth it. Thanks Porsche for letting us share in Tim's joy and let us enjoy the ride
This is an absolute crazy car to go out on the street today. What a chance of something spectacular to do. Great video.
WOWW! It must be an exceptional opportunity and a great honour and responsibility to drive such a rare and iconic car on the road. It's not a car, it's more of an artefact, a dream come true for many of us. A beautiful but tame beast that can twist its claws and show its true power in an instant. Thank you for sharing your experience!
No way, that’s insane. How the hell did this happen. The workshop even and driving that insane car. Wow
I have seen them move it and thought I was lucky, it’s a mental thing
Unbelievable day, still pinching myself!
@@Shmee150congrats
Wish I could, but happy to watch someone that understands it enjoy it
Wow! Now that brings back childhood memories
Thanks for sharing this, absolutely amazing. It is awesome you have such a relationship with Porsche that they allow you access to these amazing cars.
Great content Tim, you was able to drive the car because you have proved yourself sensible in your approach, and someone who respects these cars, rather than ragging them, lucky lucky man.
Man this guy just know how to make other people's day feel even better thanks allot time driving history on wheels
Such a special video, some of us have only seen these cars static, in pictures at that, but to see it moving and revving makes such a difference.
Wow 🤩 amazing video please more videos from the Porsche museum so much Porsches you can drive👌🏻
Congratulations Tim, this is truly an amazing experience to share with us all.
I've been drooling over the GT1 since the mid nineties...
This car was my ultimate street car back in the late '90s. What an amazing experience! Cheers Tim!
This is why I love this channel, who tf else gets to drive a Strassenversion?!?!? That has been my dream car since it came out and to see you in it..... I feel like a kid again watching this actually drive.... I've had the blessing of seeing one in person but never driving. Thank you.
For me the Porsche Gt1 of this era for me are the most beautiful cars. Remember watching these and the Mercedes equivalent racing with fire popping out of the exhaust.
To now see you show us around, up close and personal around this car. Dream come true, amazing experience. For you and for us. Thank you Tim, keep up with the great content 👍
This is probably the peak - I do not know how to drive anything more exclusive than this! Huge congrats Tim!
I think the looks of this car is simply amazing. It would be considered one of the super cars even in today’s standards. So nice you got to drive it!
It’s not very often I’m jealous but this is one of those occasions. That intro and the wall of cars behind you was breathtaking. What a legendary car the GT1 is. Some of your stats on the GT1 were a bit off but I’ll forgive you as you are the stat man 99% of the time (1st gen 996 front and rear lights on that car)
Yes! 996 lights on here, my mind was definitely frazzled by the excitement of the day
@@Shmee150Understandably!
Congratulations! You drove the best out of the three! What an experience!!!
Amazing content
That’s insane and well deserved! Thanks for sharing the experience! Indo think it’s finally time for another Porsche in the collection ;-)
So you’ve driven 4 of my 5 unicorn cars. The MC 12, CLK GTR, GT1, and the F40. Now we need to see the F1
No other channel does it like you bro! Love the car content !
Wow Tim this is such a amazing machine. Thank you for sharing the ins and outs. Must have been awesome to drive I can only imagine. Keep on shining the way you have brother.
Wow, you’re incredible lucky to be able to drive such a masterpiece. Besides the CLK GTR and the Ferrari F40, this is one of my favorite cars. Thanks for sharing this moment with us and thanks to Porsche, for make this possible
Wowzer! All these years on and this car is still AMAZING!! Absolutely insane love it❤
What a beautiful machine. Please more videos of these legendary overlooked cars. I know the modern ones "sell" with the crowd but those are the cars that are truly out of this world that aren't featured much.
HOW on earth is any other car gonna top the porsche 911 GT1. speaks volumes of how far your channel has come and im so happy for you to get to experience this . Keep up the great work shmee and thank you so much for this video
He,s already driven the mercedes clkgtr
I nearly lost my mind watching the GT1 compete against the CLK GTRs in the FIA GT Series. I would completely relinquish my mental faculties were I to ever pilot this epic Strassenversion. I consider this to be one of the most beautiful & iconic GT cars ever conceived. Congrats, Tim, and well done!
Tim is a great driver but i wouldn't wanna be his insurance guy watching him drive these cars 😂😂
Luckily these kind of things get covered by the manufacturer, I'm not sure I'd manage on a car of this value!
Held my breath watching how close that screwdriver was getting to the paint when that luggage lid came off- great video Shmee.
Content just keeps getting better and better keep up the good videos ❤
When I visited the Porsche Racing Museum in Stuttgart, I had never seen a car like this and understood what it was but I couldn't imagine how cool it was. Thank you for this vid.
My goodness. Let's think about this for a second, so you've driven the CLK-GTR, the 911 GT1, two of the three most famous cars in motorsport. Guess which one is left? When the day comes for you to drive that, you'll have driven the three legends. That's truly special for me to even think about.
What ones that?

It was an amazing day
Wow Tim your life is like an actual computer game, absolutely love this content as you just never see these cars on public roads ❤
That one month after Gumball is usually golden Shmee content. This makes all those other experiences look like child’s play
I saw one of these at the 2018 Paris Auto Show. I was amazed at this machine. I’m happy to had the opportunity to drive one and make a video to share with us! Thank you for being you and taking us along on your adventures! Cheers!
In third gear the sound is so visceral,
The view of the GT1 is just stunning, what an amazing car
I was smiling the whole time watching this. You’ve come a long way. Congratulations
There will never be another shmee150 man 😢. Literally my entire childhood. ❤ The channel was born 2 days after me.
Wow, what a beautiful machine.
You are one lucky guy to drive this.
Your enthusiasm was amazing.
Thank you for taking us with you.
You are the goat 😎😎😎👍👍👍
That's the most beautiful Porsche I've ever seen. What a great job done Shmee a spectacular chapter in your series.
The enthusiasm in your videos is amazing, but this takes it up a few notches and then some . A great end to a Sunday evening.
Absolutely Amazing.
Thank You So Much For Sharing Your Experience With Us.
Greetings from Trinidad 🇹🇹
One of my favorite older Porsches! Mindblowing
Nice one Tim totally iconic car that looks and sounds amazing thank you for sharing with us 👍🏼
I saw the thumbnail for this video and I just yelled OH MY GOD!!!!!!! IT'S MY FAVORITE 911 EVER MADE!!!!!! The Porsche 911 GT1 Strassenversion is not only one of The Holy Trinity cars, but in my opinion, it's without a doubt one of ze most Schön (beautiful) and einzigartig (unique) Porsches ever built.
What a dream Tim! You keep giving us your enthusiasm & knowledge. Big love, kindest regards, Richard U.K
Like a little kid stamping his feet wauw the enthusiasm is very genuine, cheers
The giddiness that smile almost a laugh as you step into that Porsche and then you cannot help but laugh with glee as you pull away from its home. I could go on but your genuine interest doesn’t go amiss as you travel around Europe, the states and Middle East. Keep do what you’re doing can see three million subscribers before long!!
This is literally my dream car! You just had an unbelievable opportunity to drive a GT1. WOW! This is fantastic content. Thank you for this video.
Wow - what an experience!!! It's basically a modded 993 turbo/GT2/996 headlight/taillights with different bodywork. Jealous, but glad you got to experience it. One day I will go to the museum. Thank you for the video!!!
Of all the insane cars I have seen you drive, this is the one I am most jealous of.
Thank you Shmee for sharing that experience of that particular Porsche!! That was Epic
That was great. The sound of that car on the inside is amazing. Way to go Shmee!
Damn A GT1 strassenversion didnt expect taht at all, that car is such a perfection i love it😍😍😍😍 anyways another awesome vid keep up the good work❤
Great content as always on this channel just brilliant 👌👌👌
Shmee, this machinery is just absolutely bonkers!! Insane you got the opportunity to find yourself behind the wheel of one.
Congrats. Few, very few will get the chance of Porsche to drive this car... You have earned it with your enthusiasm and in-depth knowledge and experience with fast-driving cars (at the Nurburgring). Well done.
That was epic Tim! Since Porsche is being so generous, the y should let you drive one of the handful Porsche 962 race/street car like this rare bird. Porsche had a ton of success over many years with the 962. Thanks Tim!
Ive seen the CLK gtr, but never this car before, looks & sounds amazing, not a car to drive to the shops, but on an open road or race track - Wow!!
@Shmee150 I've been following you for almost 2y, and from there until this very moment to see you in that Amazing Car,its Fantastic 👏👏👏👏 keep it the awesome stuff brother 👍🙏🙏🙏🙏
We are so thrilled for you! So exciting!
I grew up on Need For Speed Porsche 2000/Porsche Unleashed.. My childhood is PORSCHE. I always loved the 911 GT1's and the 935/78 'Moby Dick' the most. The fact that they're so INSANELY different to everything else, but still share some of the parts and shapes with the regular models. So fascinating.. So beautiful.. Hope to be able to visit the Porsche Museum this summer, to finally meet some of my life long heroes.
Cheers from Denmark!
thx Tim. the 911 GT1 was always my poster car. so damn cool n a moment u can look bak on in years to come n say, yep i drove the Porsche 911 GT1. awesome mate.
You might be one of a few people in the world who drove each number of the 911 GTx, ie GT1,2,3,4
Unreal, GT1 Strattenversion. @Shmee150 you truly lucky.
Back in the day we only had pictures of the Porsche 911 GT1 Strassenversion. Thanks to you Tim, we can hear what it sounds like driving this amazing car!
Just now, I was watching your story on Instagram, and I didn't wait long until I got notifications, but is interesting about it is that the car has same wheels as the new turbo s model's I don't know is the new models had inspired by this or it's the opposite
Thanks for watching
Sir. You are now officially a CZcams rockstar driving that. The smile on your face in was making me smile and be jealous at the same time.
Hey Tim! Hope you've had a great weekend, and enjoyed the Grand Prix!
Thanks, you too!
I was at the museum last week, I took several pictures of the GT1 from 98 since it has always been one of my heroes, what an opportunity you got driving the street legal version
A childhood dream car, thanks for the solid once over! Only thing better would be me driving it (next level bucket list: driving it on the ring).
I saw the race car run at Daytona in '98. Such a special car back then and even more so now! Now I'm really envious!
Unbelievable, congratulations, amazing video ❤
