  • Southern Soldier Boy was written by Captain G.W. Alexander in 1863. It is sung from the perspective of a women whose "sweetheart", named Bob Roebuck, is in the Confederate Army. She tells of the emotions that come with the separation from Bob, the sadness she would feel if he was killed in battle, and her hopes for the future.
Research into the origins of the song indicate it was performed by an actress named Sallie Partington shortly after it was written, being performed in Richmond in the popular Confederate play "The Virginia Cavalier."

It is so 'humanizing' to hear the perspective(s) of individuals/peoples through music from such tumultuous times...men out to fight, leaving behind wives and children. History can seem 'so far off' but people and their stories never so. Very cool channel on YT

'Those in power write the history, those who suffer write the songs. Given our history, we have an awful lot of songs.'

Imagine being in the south 1860, there’s a blockade on your ports, nothing in nothing out. Your family is starving, the Union army just came into New Orleans and hung a woman for talking rudely to a Union soldier(not that the people were treating the soldiers very well, you wouldn’t either). What would you do? Imagine not having any boots or food on a 15+ mile march and you have to eat green corn or food found on dead soldiers to survive. It’s amazing that anyone even survived a battle in the first place let alone the time in between when disease and starvation was so prevalent that death was everywhere.
