  • Join me for a walk through the centre of one of Northumberland's most stunning villages: Bamburgh. Though only home to around 400 people today, this village is full of history and spectacular views, with heritage going back millennia that draws in thousands of visitors every year!
    As we walk around Bamburgh, we pass a number of interesting landmarks, including St. Aidan's Church, Grace Darling Memorial, Grace Darling Museum, Bamburgh Hall, The Grove, Front Street, The Victoria Hotel, The Castle Inn, The Lord Crewe Hotel, Castle Green, Bamburgh War Memorial, Bamburgh Castle and Bamburgh Beach.

    There is also the most fantastic beach there. Yes, the North Sea is chilly, but the flat sandy beach is amazing and on a day with a west wind, blowing back the surf of the waves as they roll in from the west, the views of the castle and sea are amazing.

    • @LetsWalkUK
      @LetsWalkUK  Před 3 lety +1

      I agree! Climbing down from the castle through the dunes to that immense expanse of flat sand is quite the experience, and looking out over the North Sea gives such a refreshing feeling :) I'm sorry I didn't manage to take us down to the beach in the video - but thank you for sharing with us, it's a lovely part of Bamburgh!

    As a treat for getting us to 2,000 - please enjoy a walk around one of the most spectacular villages I've ever visited: Bamburgh!
    By the way, here's a bonus fact about Bamburgh: Just to the north of the village is Bamburgh Lighthouse: England's northernmost land-based lighthouse (mind this is not the one Grace Darling lived at). The northernmost lighthouse in England is in Berwick-upon-Tweed, but that's located on a pier so doesn't count as a 'land-based' lighthouse.

      @@LetsWalkUK Oh it's my pleasure. I've seen any number where the common thread seems to be the narrator's love of their own voice, lol. That's not to imply it's the absence of a voice which drew me to your videos, he hastens to add. Also, I'm not one for superfluous detail, a few pertinent details is fine, I just don't need to know Henry VIII's favourite pie filling or what Shakespeare's mattress was stuffed with. ;-) You just keep doing what you're doing and the subs will soar! Have a great weekend.

    What a beautiful village. It's kind of what I like - old and small, a place you can chat in a pub and ask locals about what they do and about the history.
    I have a couple of questions that are sort of touristy if you don't mind... Is Bamburgh pronounced Bamborough? And the second is - What is the difference between Northumbria and Northumberland?
    Again, thanks for another great walk!

    • @LetsWalkUK
      @LetsWalkUK  Před 3 lety +3

      Thank you so much! I'm so glad to hear you enjoyed the video - Bamburgh is utterly gorgeous indeed, and a wonderful place to visit and discover.
      Those are two great questions by the way, my apologies for not clearing them up in the video - but here are my answers:
      1. The 'burgh' in Bamburgh is pronounced much the same as in Edinburgh, so yes, it would be like saying 'Bamborough'.
      2. Northumberland and Northumbria are two very different things, even if they sometimes refer to the same general area. The simplest way I can put it is that Northumberland is the modern-day county you see on maps of England, and once also contained what is now known as Tyne and Wear.
      Northumbria, on the other hand, began as an Anglo-Saxon kingdom, from the unification of Bernicia (of which Bamburgh was capital) and Deira (of which York was capital). The kingdom of Northumbria existed until the 10th century, when it began to unify with southern kingdoms into 'England'. Today, Northumbria is a general way to refer to England's North East (especially north of Durham and Newcastle), and you'll see the police force in Newcastle and Northumberland is still known as 'Northumbria Police' :)
      I hope that clears things up - and I'm very glad to hear you found the video an interesting watch.
      Thank you so much for watching and commenting as always - it's always a delight to see you here!
