  • Join me for an epic walk up and down the hills around the town centre of Scarborough, Britain's oldest and favourite seaside resort. With a history dating back well over 1,000 years, Scarborough has quite the story to tell, complete with stunning seaside scenery, immense landmarks, gorgeous beaches, and a few surprises in store too.
As we walk around Scarborough, we pass a number of interesting landmarks, including Scarborough Spa Bridge, The Grand Hotel, the McBean Steps, the Central Tramway, South Bay Beach, The Big Wheel, Scarborough seafront gardens, The Royal Hotel, Queen Victoria Statue, Scarborough Town Hall, Newborough, Scarborough Market Hall, St. John the Evangelist Church (former), Trinity House, Butter Cross, Scarborough Joke Shop, The Bolts, Scarborough Harbour, Bethel Mission Chapel, King Richard III House, Luna Park, South Toll House, The Headland, Scarborough Castle, St. Mary's Church, the grave of Anne Brontë, and then all the way back down the hill to South Bay Beach once again.

Good evening! Thank you so much to everybody for helping us reach the incredible milestone of 3,000 subscribers! I'm really grateful and happy to see that you're all enjoying these videos so much, and as a special treat for us hitting the 3,000 mark, please enjoy this bumper 43-minute walk around gorgeous Scarborough :)
Quickly, some bonus info on Scarborough, and its impressive railway station, which we didn't manage to visit in this walk: Opened in 1845, Scarborough railway station was of course instrumental in bringing more tourists to the booming seaside resort, but did you know that it also holds a very unique world record? Indeed, Scarborough railway station is home to the world's longest platform seat, measuring a whopping 456ft/139m!

I have some lovely memories memories of Scarborough. I stayed in 1986 in early December. I was supposed to be going to a party, but it was cancelled due to the hostess being ill. In those days I could walk almost anywhere. My balance has almost completely gone (not helped by 18 months of lockdown) but this is like reliving those walks I enjoyed over that weekend. The saddest bit was deciding to spend the evening in Gala Land and finding it closed and boarded up. I found a little market instead and got a fat book to read for the night. I've had a lovely time on my virtual walk. Thank you for the video.

I've practically been a Scarborian since I was born. Although I moved from place to place as a toddler, Scarborough was, and still is, my childhood home.
One note about that big wheel. There used to be the famous Futurist Theatre. It started off as Scarborough's first cinema, then it became a theatre that happened to sometimes show films. Many famous bands performed there, especially the Beatles in 1963 when Beatlemania hit Britain.
It shut in 2013 due to business being unsustainable. And it got demolished in 2017 despite residential protests. And whilst there are plans for a Flamingoland extention, the Ferris Wheel is a temporary placement.
    Good video. Keep it up.

First of all, thank you, thank you for doing this. It is/was grand. My only "small" advice is this: instead of all the written information at the bottom of the screen, you should narrate it instead. I was reading so much, but then I was feeling I was missing out on some of the video parts. Again, great job.

    • @LetsWalkUK
      @LetsWalkUK  Před 3 lety +5

Thank you so much! I'm so glad you enjoyed the video - and thank you very much for the suggestion on narration :) I do like to make these walks as immersive as possible, with all of the natural sounds instead of my squeaky voice getting in the way, but I can certainly look towards narrating some walks in the future, or even ones like this as a kind of redux :)
Thank you so much for watching and your kind words - it really means a lot to hear!

i disagree about making a "narrative report" on the walks. i prefer to read the 1-2 lines (only) .. after all... the guy is only walking, so gives you plenty of time to read and still not miss out on him walking past one house or shop. and if thats the case.. theres always the PAUSE button.

Wow! that has to be one of the best virtual walking tours ever! It transported me back fifty years, to when my family of four visited, my now fifty three year old daughter was just three, She came back last week for a visit with her husband, they thoroughly enjoyed themselves and the splendid weather, they took me on a short walk about on iPad camera, I was overwhelmed at the scenery that greeted me, and slightly tearful as there was just one person missing, my devoted life time partner of sixty years! The history of Scarborough is truly amazing as your fantastic and clear commentary depicted, words can’t describe how I truly feel, pleased to hear ‘Peasholm’ Park is still there, my Son who was six was beside himself at the re-enactment of the battle ships at war firing at each other! thank you 🙏 so much for sharing your obvious videography skills with us, p.s. you have some very Large & Noisy Seagulls in Scarborough, the sound of the Seaside (Perfect) I can almost smell the Iconic Fish & Chips 🍟👌

So, so pleased to see one of the best holiday destinations anywhere in the UK! Had many a happy family holiday here throughout the 60s/70s, though never in either of the two majestic hotels featured here, sadly. We always stayed in a B&B, creaky beds with candlewick bedspreads and definitely no en suite, lol. Usually crabby, waspish landladies who sighed and tutted any time any of the kids spoke above a whisper, hahaha. Luna Park was a 'must visit' for us, and the natural lido which was absolutely perishing even at the height of Summer! A week was never long enough to see the town. I could smell the ozone and the odours of various cafes and chippies as you took us on yet another magnificent walk. And I would not have wanted to be a pall bearer at Miss Bronte's funeral, not with that climb!

Scarborough really is one of the very best places to have a nice day by the seaside in the UK, perhaps even Europe! Most of us have never been lucky enough to stay in the town's biggest hotels, but it's the good, honest B&Bs around Scarborough that make the town what it is :) And as you say, a week is certainly never enough to see the whole town, let alone this 40-odd minute walkthrough - even up and down those hills, which must have been tiring for people for so many years!

Everything there from a Norman Castle, two cathedrals (one is Norman), one of the most complete streets of medieval houses in the UK, a market which has stood on the same site for over a thousand years, a Flintstone Guildhall, sites of rebellion, remains of a monastery, plus Tutor, Georgian, Queen Anne buildings. Spectacular new buildings as well!

Thank you so much! Do you know I've never actually been to Norwich - or almost all of Norfolk for that matter - but it seems to me like such a unique part of the country, full of spectacular heritage as you mention in the city alone! I'll certainly be making a trip to Norwich at some point in the near future to make a video - I can't wait :)
Thank you so much for watching and especially subscribing - I do hope you enjoyed this video!

Thanks for the upload. Scarborough has such a beautiful setting. Sadly the Grand Hotel is only really grand because of its size and location. Inside it’s very second rate, badly needs new ownership.

You're welcome! And thank you very much for watching - Scarborough certainly is a spectacular place, and the Grand Hotel too is a testament to its grandeur - though I've never had the chance to stay there, it certainly has quite the history to it :)

Thanks for a great video. I can't believe only 359 likes out of 17.5 k views!
I was last in Scarborough back in 1994. The company I worked for had just sold the Royal Opera House there, before it's demise.
My partner at the time ran a night club called Rosie's, a very popular haunt for youngsters with too much money to spend!
I got to see Scarborough in all four seasons and it was fantastic.

Great videos! I recently discovered your channel (starting with Whitby). Although I don't now live in the UK, I get back fairly regularly as I still have family in Yorkshire. I grew up in Harrogate and have visited Whitby and Scarborough many times over the years, so these videos are very nostalgic. I now realise there's a lot of Scarborough I've missed over the years! Like another person has already commented, where's Peasholm Park?! ... I assume it still exists though I suspect it's probably changed somewhat from my day.
The subtitles are excellent - very informative and easy to read (and I like the semi-transparent background). What camera etc.do you use for these videos and what software do you use for editing, for the sub-titles etc. I wish I could do something even half as good.....
Working my way through your videos and look forward to continuing new ones - keep up the great work.

Thank you so much! I'm so glad to hear you enjoyed this video - Scarborough is one of the most picturesque places in all of Yorkshire, and that really is an impressive claim to fame! I'm sorry I couldn't quite fit in Peasholm Park into this video - but rest assured that it is still there :)
Thank you very much for your kind comments on the video style too - it really means a lot to hear! I use a very basic version of Adobe Premiere called Premiere Elements - which is much more affordable and easy to use - and that covers all my needs for subtitling and occasionally sorting out the sound. I film with a GoPro Hero8 Black - it's all a fairly simple setup as I'm not much of techy person, so you could certainly do something like this!
Thank you once again for watching and for your lovely comments - I hope you enjoy the next videos you see :)

Nice video. Just one thing to say and that is when you went up to the castle if you had stepped through the Arch you would have seen an Amazing view of the North Bay. It gives you more of the vast area it covers leading to the Cleveland walk. I'm sure you must have had your reasons but I would have come from the spa on the south bay to peaceholm Park.

Unfortunately when on Holiday with my Grandchildren in Scarbrough I was called a *F* foreigner because I spoke a German to my Grandchildren. That was my last memory of Scarbrough!
