Like others, music is fine, but the mix is much too loud. The older ‘more serious’ music in old Situation Room videos suited it far more. And the mix was better. ‘Sharp sounding’ music with high treble just distracts from Simon speaking.
But yeah, the music mix is too loud in this video. It should be about 40% of what it is in the video.

The only reason to do anything of one's own accord is that the 'want' is greater than the 'not'. We can put the pride aside and accept that Finland was not forced to request NATO membership. Ultimately, such alliances allow for reduced military spending, improved military defence/response, and an increased level of deterrence. Any alliance or treaty is a measure of pragmatism, it's not like fuzzy feelings between two countries cause them to formally adopt a policy of military defense. Finland wanted to join NATO for the power and safety it offers, because the only reason to have not done so before was to prevent provoking Russia into a war that would have otherwise not happened... and perhaps the pride and confidence after once defending it's territory from Russia, the act that led to Russia being removed from NATO in the first place.

Just FYI: The United States Army already had a base very close to Russia in the Arctic Circle before any military collaboration with Finland. We have the 11th Airborne Division located at Fort Wainwright Alaska. Finland is closer to the populated of Russia since our base in Alaska is closer to the back side of Russia and Siberia. The troops in Alaska constantly train in sub-zero conditions so Finland is not needed for those operations. We might even be able to teach them a thing or two. However, learning how to train and fight together as a team in such conditions is always a plus.

I'm genuinely curious. I keep seeing these posts, but watching on my TV I can't even hear the music unless I focus in on it.
I'm wondering if some are using headphones designed for music and are bad at speech. The music would be louder and clearer while the speech would be muffled a bit.

About Finland and NATO. There was never a majority against NATO but traditionally a lot of the "lets wait and see" people. And then they did see Russia attacking a neighbour.
Meanwhile Finland has taken part in NATO operations and made the Defence forces NATO ready for many years, something that has annoyed Putin for years too.
What has not been pointed out is that there was this scary possibility that some American president could promise that NATO doesn't go further east in Europe.
That was a very scary situation for Finland who has assumed joining NATO is just and only Fi nland's decision to apply for membership or not.
It was also important for Finland that Sweden also applies for memebership, as they did.
Then there is this uncertainty about NATO due to Trump and what this agreement between Finland and the US Army does it to take out the uncertainty of NATO as this agreement is not depending on NATO alone.
    Common sense and realpolittk.

Note: when NATO says they are short such and such combat power what they mean is "under the assumption of all worst case estimates concerning opposition strength we need this to guarantee a quuck and decisive victory".

It's probably worth noting that many Iranians consider the reformist parties to be as closely allied with the theocracy as the hardliners. The IRGCs advocates in western nations often push forward the idea that those western nations should support the moderates and negotiate, but when the moderates get "elected" nothing meaningfully changes, and each concession granted by the west due to promises of moderation ends up supporting the long-term goals of the theocracy. Because of this, it's generally thought that the moderate parties are just a false face used by the IRGC to brazenly lie about their ambitions.

The wages are already decent , but training enough capable troops to have a supply to replenish from is a different beast. Conscription is the cheaper option.

    •  Před 26 dny

@@XGD5layer Conscription is an inefficient tax. You can tax people in money, and then offer wages for people to undergo voluntary military training.
You can specifically offer money for people to undergo basic training to get the same broad body of reserves as conscription would give you. No need to concentrate on some professional long term soldiers, if that's not what you need or want.
Conscription isn't 'cheaper', just because you don't measure the cost of this specific tax in money.
