Collin Sexton Was Supposed To Be A STAR! What Happened?

  • Today’s feature is a player many had high hopes for coming into the 2018 draft, and it showed with his 8th overall selection, the 3rd point guard taken behind Trey Young and Luka Doncic and before all star Shai Gilgeous Alexander. All throughout high school Collin climbed up the charts with his scoring ability, energy on defense, and his seemingly insane defensive intensity. He also had the personality of a lead guard, with clips of his high school battles going viral just about every other week. But that’s the thing about high school and engines like CZcams and social media, they can make or break a player’s potential, and if used right can create a buzz like it did for Sexton that leads to a one and done college career, and lottery pick in the NBA draft. But Collin’s time in the NBA has been annoying to say the least, and maddening the way the circumstances have played out against his favor. Circumstances that has him coming off the bench his last few seasons, with his minutes taking a drastic hit from where it was when he was having a borderline all star year with the Cleveland Cavaliers in 20-21 and the 2 years before that. In just a few years Collin Sexton went from a better team record away from being an all star, to looking like an expendable player, possible journeyman, or 6 man of the future. What Happened? Collin Sexton Was Supposed To Be A STAR! What Happened?

If I recall, he was a 4.0 student. Kid didn’t even have social media until he got to the pros. That’s something you don’t see everyday from these young athletes. It's crazy how the NBA shifts. Isaiah Thomas was a star in Boston just 6-7 years ago and Sexton has better physical gifts but NBA wants bigger players now. He would've been a star a decade ago. Put him on a team like Miami and he could still be very useful as a 6th man. In an ideal world there would be a bigger playmaker next to him but neither Cle or Utah have bothered to do anything to make this kid's life easier.

  • @thankyoujodi
    @thankyoujodi Před 7 měsíci +11

    As a cavs fan, it sucks cause I did enjoy sexton and hoped he could be a part of our comeback. But you can tell his game is limited due to his IQ and size. Prior to the Mitchell trade, I had proposed a package similar to the one given to Utah, but for Brandon Ingram. I think Cleveland would be more balanced, with less of a liability in the backcourt, and that sexton would've thrived as NO's new lead guard. The fact that he would've been on zion's timeline would've been the cherry.

    @BostonBori92 Před 7 měsíci +3

    I think the reason hes not playing was made crystal clear in the interaction he had with Will Hardy last season for as good as a scorer as he is and as intense as he is he doesnt play disciplined fundamental basketball hes erratic and when asked to play in structure with a system hes struggles he wont ever be an efficient undersized guard if he doesnt learn to play the game

    • @jennifercheeks
      @jennifercheeks Před 7 měsíci +2

      I think there’s misconception as to why he’s not playing and it doesn’t have anything to do with him. It’s his coach being poor at his job and not doing research on his players and truly valuing what they bring to the table . His interaction with Hardy was nothing bad lol he was simply coaching him. The guards he’s currently playing behind two guards who make more mistakes and play way more selfish than sexton ever did. So the very reasons you listed apply to THT and clsrkson ten times over and they’re starting. So the reasons ppl are coming up with are inconsistent especially when you look at the player on the team who aren’t even better than him but yet have these long leashes

  • @jennifercheeks
    @jennifercheeks Před 7 měsíci +6

    He’s in the worse situation. In Utah. He has the tools , talent and work ethic to be a star. He was heading in that direction before the injury. The sad part about it now is that he’s not the reason why he can’t be a star it’s his current team that is determined to minimize and under utilize him and there’s no reason or rationale behind it. This is a guy that can put up 20 in his sleep efficiently and close games. That’s not something eveybody can do. The direction of the Utah jazz does not exist. Do anybody really believe THT and Jordan clarkson are better options at either guard spot? I can’t say any sane person thinks that. It’s a very very odd situation. He barely plays 20 minutes a game. It’s one thing if his trajectory was limited because he simply didn’t work or didn’t have the talent but neither are true. He’s literally being sabotaged and it isn’t talked about enough!
