    Zombie resurrection post, but I couldn’t not respond… I’m a lefty and with my Spyderco Para3 I prefer it tip down. It’s perfect for opening, holding the blade and swinging the grip. I’m really happy and impressed with the designs Gerber is resurrecting itself with.

    We carry Gerber because we use the knives as a tool. If we break them because we needed a pry tool or screw driver big deal. They are easy to sharpen on the fly. If you lose it your not out hundreds of dollars. Gerber also has a great warranty from my experience. I will be a lifetime customer.

    Nice to see Gerber getting with the times. Great steel with ball bearing pivots and nice finish. No deep carry clip though. They could have went with a lower cost steel to bring the price down also.

    I like tip down left side carry in really small knives but I’m not a southpaw. I usually carry a Large cold steel type primary and it’s nice to put a secondary small knife on the other side of the pocket. I do like the blade to face the seam in my pocket because I have had accidentally deployed blades in my pocket before. Only problem with it down is that there are very few with deep carry options in that direction.

  • @chronovore3726
    @chronovore3726 Před 5 lety +3

    This might be the nicest Gerber knife in recent memory but does that mean it's great? Does that mean it's worth a hundred bucks? It seems like every review for it features a quality control issue. When I look at this knife, I'm instantly reminded of the Kershaw Dividend. While it is assisted, the Dividend seems to have better fit and finish. The Dividend is also available in S35VN or M390 for less than what this costs.

    • @davidsiegel9847
      @davidsiegel9847 Před 5 lety

      @@bobmellon And by my very mediocre but expensive made in USA Gerber Centerdrive multitool, quality control is still a major issue. Some Chinese products are catching up to, and occasionally exceeding, US bladed products.
      Great warranty and customer service--but out in field and on the job we need real quality in the product. Imagine a soldier on the job who's blade roles or snaps. Or multitool wire cutters shatter. Great customer service is of no use then and there. Gerber doesn't lack good ideas or design. Just good, solid manufacturing quality control.

  • @ThomasConnolly

    Hey Jeff, you missed something very noticeable to me in this review!!!! At the 5:27 mark of this video when you're pointing the tip of the blade towards the camera to show us the blade centering of your Gerber Fastball, I can clearly see that the swedge of obviously noticeably way off on one side of the blade. Sits in my first aid kit so I can cut open the plastic wrap on new bandaid boxes. Used it once to cut some 550 cord and instead of a nice cut it looked like I chewed through the cord with my teeth.

    People don't talk about gerber when they talk about spyderco, because spyderco hasn't compromised their quality or steel, like gerber did. USA made or not, gerber is extremely behind in the market - release a clever design 5 years after they're popular? Gerber needs to change it up - if they want to captivate the majority of the current EDC community. And one cool design, with aluminum handles isn't going to cut it. Nice video!

    I just bought a buck 112 in s30v American made with the best heat treating For 90$ or you can get the 110 for 100$. I don’t care if it’s tip up or down.

    my blade was very convexed, i fixed that, like knife and safty closing, good knife for 100$ usa you can't beat, it is a washed blade i was given silver or gray but i like it less scratching hopefuly, but they got to get blade edge grinded better, why was mine so convexed , to much, love convex anyway so easily fixed with water stone

    I actually prefer tip down because of the way I grab my knife it’s in a ready to use position

      I like to carry thin pocket knives in a shirt pocket. With a flipper tab, tip down is very natural for how it gets drawn.

      They had great knives years ago. It is too bad a company with great heritage won't step up to the plate, and take a chance with new, original designs, made from popular materials (aka titanium, carbon fiber, etc).

  • @christopherkirchoff9007

    The reason they are affordable is cause in the 80's and 90's all I could find for Gerber was full tang an boot knives! Wasn't till gun makers like Smith an Wesson, Colt an other started knives; then Gerber got into folder. 13 years ago an back to the end of the 90's when House of Blades popped up in Texas is when all these blade brands started! And yes I am tip down due to the laboring jobs I work on my back an crawling, climbing on roofs, in trees', etc. Tip down for me is safer grabbing my knives from all positions!!!! I would sooner buy that Gerber before a spyderco. The spydercos' have not ever passed my working test on the jobs and in the wild ( I broke 2 and gave 1 away before not paying their amount for spyderco any more ). And Eagle knives in the early 90's had the spider hole before spyderco ever came out. I love having a good memory. Good review and it's all just my personal opinion- eveveryone has a personal opinion and job for there own brand(s) of bladed tools. Not wanting to hurt any feelings. Just a long time fan of cutlery-n-tools.....!

    Gerber freeman stag handle caper knife in s30v over here. Back then it was the least expensive knife in s30v shipped abroad. Pretty knife, not sharp but a classic for the knife closet.
    This folder looks like kershaw and very comfy. Too bad about the metal handle, those ugly up too much imho.

    Gerber did a good job of making a Kershaw...

    • @hunterglaspell5580

      Logan2070 it looks almost completely different other than the wharncliffe blade (of which is not Kershaw patented) and aluminum handles... it’s more angular, has better materials that say the leek. And isn’t assisted. The best difference. Other than that designs just meld together after a while

    I really like Gerber. specifially their m500-600 I think their called, multitools and the center drive multitool are my favorite. That said my favorite economical folder is the crkt hi jinx and its ball bearing pivot is almost like its assisted. It's really smooth, strong, has tight lockup and is so well balanced I can throw it. After listening to your review I'll have to pick up this knife not to mention the edge contour is probably my favorite blade design, atleast among my favorite. For my EDC/working knives I prefer the harder type stainless steels because I live in central SC and it more humid than a fat chicks twat.
