The orange Bear Grills (or whatever) really damaged Gerber. I take knives one at a time. I like the Fastball.
Gerber's custom stuff is pretty interesting these days, they are making good progress on undoing all the pr damage they did with their cheap stuff.
Great review! I started with Gerber also, might have to look at this one. Thanks!
The first knife I ever bought with my first real job was a Gerber LST... it had a poly pocket clip. I loved that little knife, I lost it way back... eventually buying another that I carry now. They are made in the USA.... solid and feel good in hand. During that first job in a hunting and camping store I also bought a Gerber Gatormate.... which I still have and love! They did lose a bit for a while with design and QC. I am so happy to see where they are going now... especially with their Reserve line.... and customization options
Gerber just needs to work on their QC. They have a good models, old and new. Haven't handled a fastball yet, the asada really catches my eye though.
That fastball sounds very snappy on camera! Love the background!
I got the fastball cleaver a week or so ago because my wife got me the d2 flatiron with micarta scales and I liked it . Actually very smooth no blade play. Both are actually really good knives at least in my opinion.
Tnx Jeff,i always appreciate that you always upload a video for us.your passion is just great!
More than twenty years ago, I carried an Applegate-Fairbairn Combat Folder. Served me well for a long time. Gerber were some of my first decent knives back in the day. Happy to see a see a more recent example of a good knife from them. 👍🏻
Gerber, Buck and Victorinox are the 3 knife brands of my youth. If it wasn't for them, I'd probably not be "knife nut" I am today...
The fastball is on their custom section and you can get copper scales too
Thanks for the video Jeff! Hope u are having a good holiday season so far!! This knife definitely appeals to me and looks like a sweet EDC blade. This is one that i plan to save up for and get a custom from the Gerber website. I think thats a cool idea and this seems like a nifty one to do that with.
I own the gerber kettlebell which I actually like a lot because of the size. Perfect for a small EDC
Awesome video Jeff!! I am a guy that likes made in the USA knives and this gerber looks good and I will probably get one soon. I have been edc ing a Kershaw Blur since this time last year and it has been awesome! I will be moving on to the Blur Tanto most likely next.
If you ever in South Williamsport PA look me up we'll hit the Walmarts make videos
Gerber has an ok multitool that i use sometimes. Its not a leatherman but its better than the ozark trail multitool i got. Plus i also got a knife with it so i cant be too picky
I have the Gerber Fastball and I love this knife! From it's aesthetics, light weight to its function. It has a unique snap to it upon deployment! I have other expensive knives but think of getting a customized version from their webpage!
I have been carrying my fastball everyday since basically the launch of the fastball, fantastic knife. I ordered a custom....I love this knife, I use my fastball a lot for my job and it is a workhorse. I have hammered with the back end and cut so many different materials, just a really solid knife.
It’s cool to shed light on the good knives regardless of popularity. Great video
Love my fastball
I really liked my side bolt Gerber back in the 80’s. Then I was kinda out on them until I got a strong arm, fastball, and LMF. I have seen a few of their more budget friendly knives that our scouts had that were down right dangerous after using them.
Really loke this knife, and agree with what you said about country of origin. My thing is, I only buy American made American made knives from American companies, completely against buying a Chinese made knife from an American company. I dont buy strictly American made, own knives from Sweden, Norway, ect. But, if the company is an American company, im only buying their USA made blades. Especially with what's going on in the world and our economy I want to support it as much as possible. Just my two cents/opinion.
They're really customizable from Gerber as well. Got one of those for my cousin recently. The new Sedulo is only available from the Reserve (Gerber's Custom Shop) and I'm really tempted to get one for my wife. Maybe even for me.
Great video as usual
I used to have a few decent gerbers I traded but my wife got me the d2 flatiron with micarta scales and I was actually impressed so I ordered the fast ball cleaver and I was very surprised honestly!
I want the double down!!!
Hey Mr. Lover. Got to agree with you about the cleavers. I mean I think they might look a little cool, but they are very impractical as an EDC style knife. I have also bypassed Gerber, probably for no good reason. Anyway, great review, I think I might have to check out the fastball. Thanks.
The mail has been painfully slow in my neck of the woods. Still waiting on a package that was supposed to be delivered on Saturday.
Anyway, I like Gerber knives. I carry them a lot and have the Edict, Haul, Quick Draw, Obsidian, and High Brow in my EDC rotation.
after carrying a cleaver style blade for awhile i found that it could do everything i needed it to do, having a very fine point is not nearly as necessary as people make it out to be except maybe in very specific situations, but even then i think you can get by with what point you have in the cleaver style.
many peopel use their knives to clean their nails or get splinters out for me I prefer a finer tiup for penetration into boxes the pointier the easier and less resistance makes for a more precise cut so I dont cut the contents of the package, but I do find other situations where a finer point is helpful, what most people tend not to do is use the bae of their blade 99% of the time when the edge is dull the blade by the choil is still nice and sharp...
I just recently ordered my first ZT. It’s an 0235 and I can’t wait to get it. I’m also gonna buy a leather organizer for it probably from take of knives but idk yet. If anyone has any good suggestions for an organizer for the 0235 and maybe a pen plz let me know.
I'm by no means a steel snob but I've had nothing but bad luck with the grey gerber mystery metal
If I get one I'd get the cleaver blade style , I had the gerber flat iron and loved it but decided to give it to my dad ever since then I miss that cleaver blade shape
I have this knife and don't get why everyone complains about it so much, it's not perfect but it's damn good. I plan on getting the 20cv cleaver eventually
Nice knife! It reminds me of the SOG Twitch XL.
Very good knife !
Do you think the Fastball is still worth it at its current price ($119)?
Most “knife people” don’t even use their knives like most average joes do and most average joes use Gerbers. I’ve used Gerbers for a while and I have/had benchmades, Spydercos, and ZTs. Honestly, the American Gerber stuff is on par with everything else I’ve seen. And their import stuff is getting there (the d2 flatiron is example of this)
I have a gerber air ranger that is one of my favorite work knives. It's got great action, size, and its held up to years of abuse at this point. Is it my favorite knife in my collection? No, but I like it just as well as my spyderco tenacious or boker kalishnakov. I also hate the gerber paraframes.
I give out ganzo firebird knives for people that ask for a knife as a gift. They're well made, good enough materials and are inexpensive. Non knife people just beat the crap outta knives or lose them so there's no point in getting them a more expensive knife. Learned this the hard way, some that went wrong, a benchmade 531 pardue, a $150 discontinued knife that was lost after a few weeks, a mint buck 110 from the late 60's that got its tip snapped off prying out a car stereo. I still feel bad for the ganzo's when I see them again too, "mauled" is a word that comes to mind for their condition.
i love my gerber knifes i git the scout i had the bear grills fixed i have the strongman there all excellent quality knifes... ace hardware is selling gerber knifes now...
Well your voice has never changed as I just watch one of your review video "Knife Review : Spyderco Civilian G-10
" which was uploaded 6 years ago lol
Keep it up and hope you are doing okay.
Hi Jeff which would pick ka bar dosier d2 or the buck slim 112 pro
Back in the day when i started getting into knives gerber was my go to knife since they were so dirt cheap and i didnt care about beating the crap out of it. I forget what the name of the model i had but it was a skeletonized frame lock and i used the heck out of it until it fell apart. I Haven't bought a gerber knife in years because of how bad they've gotten and how much I've learned about better quality knives. I may have to buy the fastball just so i have a quality gerber since ive heard nothing but good reviews about it
@@Fiber64 that might have been it. I got it when i was like 7 or 8 so about 15-16 years ago now and at the time cheap knives was all i was used to.
P-town represent 🙌🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼
Have you had a chance to check out the sedulo?
Finally!! Been waiting all day for the new vid. Keep it up, Jeff!
oh well thats neat
I advise a ballisong as a christmas present
Every damn time i buy a more affordable knife from Gerber i regret it I've bought to many duds the Gerber sumo is fun but takes a lot to flick open and shut both break in and its general shape im a fan of the airframe i dont use the two that i have i just like how the feel and they came in gift packs that i didn't keep the rest of
Nice knife
Kind of unfair to ask that of you as well. This is a nice knife I have one and for a second knife.
Gerber needs to make a fastball 2. Same wharncliff blade and size, same handles, 20cv blade, reverse deep carry clip, axis lock and $150 id buy it all day
I don't understand the cleaver thing either, except as a novelty.
Making a different steel version only as a cleaver? Makes no sense.
Idk at $75 bucks I wouldn't exactly call this knife underrated, I think it might be the opposite. Also, I've gotten some of the gerber autos and they just aren't great quality . . .
compare to what? Look at the quality of those autos compared to their direct competition in the same price range, I think they compare very well, but you are entitled to your own opinions
👍
pointy but nice
I bought two and returned them both. The blade grind was horribly off center. Worse than cheap Chinese made knives.
So I take it you don’t like the minimalist cleaver
This Gerber fast ball knife sucks! I bought one because of all positive reviews here on YT. Straight from the box, in less than one hour, the pocket clip was hanging on only one loose screw. Where is your lifetime warranty when you loose your knife because of that? You can't proof it. The grinding from the edge was also terrible. I send it back to the hardware store to swap it for a new one. I told them to send me some close up pics. from the edge first. Same terrible grinding. I asked for refund. I send a mail to Gerber USA about the issue and got reply from Fiskars Sweden??? Fiskars Sweden told me that the hardware store where i bought the Gerber Fastball knife was not one of their customers.
That's it! Great service isn't it? It cost me a lot of time with all the mail contact and money for diesel to drive two times to the post office totally 64 km. This was a month ago and i,m still pissed off!
haha $75 USD dollars, no way in hell. hard miss.
bear grylls killed gerber....
i manufacture clothes in downtown LA in the garment district, for all of those who recoil from Chinese made knives, how many of you are as triggered by made in China clothing? when you start buying made in USA clothing then maybe you might be taken seriously, but as it stands it's just xenophobia and racism selectively applied.
For me it isn't the people it is the government. Also I would prefer to support the guy that I could meet at the bar down the street vs some guy half way around the world. I buy as local as possible skin color has nothing to do with it at least not for me. Have a blessed day.
@@aaronporter2180 i agree with you, but my point is, why is it always (primarily only) about knives. nearly NONE of the people refusing to buy chinese knives even look at where their clothing is made. 99% of all the clothing and trinkets you buy at the big box stores are all made in China, yet no venom when it comes to that. that's the point i was trying to make.
If I could buy only products not made in China I would.
Sadly that's not realistic.
People take pride in certain things they own however. Knife enthusiasts who disagree with the way the Chinese government behaves, will naturally not want to support them when making their purchase. Go find a clothing enthusiast who feels the same way about China, bet they avoid their products as much as they can.
When I put my EDC together. I specifically avoided buying Chinese products as much as I could. Knife from Italy, leather items from a small Guatemalan business that donates part of their profits to the local community. Wallet from the US, etc... I still ended up with a few Chinese products in there tho, that's just how it is.
In a perfect world I'd avoid all their products, but I'm not able to. So I will give them as little as possible.
No hate needed, just an unwillingness to contribute nearly as much as others do.
Quit being a clown with that "ur racist" crap. there are lots of made in USA clothing and people should buy them. I'm wearing Texas jeans, Wigwam socks and a Bayside hoodie right now. People may be inconsistent, they may even be hypocrites, but miss me with your race-baiting.
I have tons of usa made things. It's just not as easy as portrayed to buy usa made even tons companies lie about it so my advice to anyone is buy vintage usa made in person thrift stores etc lots of options. NOT online unless you know it's legit.
ooh Im early again.
gerber was my brand back in the day.... i insisted on gerber until they went into the whole 'made in china' thing. we just saw a stream of inferior trash from then on
