I'm very much into re-purposing obsolete tech to make it useful and fun again and that's what we're doing today. In this episode, I take a super old 2006 white iMac and make it an awesome retro gaming rig with Batocera, so let's go!

i literally have this exact model of Mac Mini in my closet. that computer still works like it's nothing but i haven't ever found any use for it due to the operating system being outdated. i gotta tinker with it now seeing this vid. i will give an update on how it goes
I need a more videos of this iMac in 2020
saw one of these things for 20 bucks at Goodwill. Might try this!
how did it go? I hope it was an x86 one!
I have one and I was thinking what to do with it and now with your video I find the answer , thanks
Time to dust off my 2012 MacBook Pro. Should be perfect for this if I can get it working.
Dude, can you go deeper? what exactly batocera distro did you use? did you flash it in mac os or windows?
I have the exact same imac, follow your guide, but at the moment I select the efi boot icon, the mac freeze ...
How long take to boot? yours also freeze for a while?
Can you elaborate a bit more on this? There is a mac version and a x86 version. Both do nothing on my imac 2006. It loads a few minutes and reboots into OSX.
Hello Friend, What version of batocera did you use?
Same problem as several others. Machine freezes then eventually boots off internal drive. Same request. Could you please give (preferably link) the exact version that worked for you? Thanks.
I just bought one for 50 bucks but it did include mouse and keyboard in very good condition
Is there a way to control iMac’s fans in botacera?
Thanks for this video!
I want to build a cabinet to put my 2015 27" iMac into. will this work with this Mac? Also do you know of any I/O old retro type buttons and joystick that I can use for my cabinet and this software. Thanks for the great video.
So how to hook up controller to imac...
I really love the idea of doing this, and I have the exact same computer sitting about doing nothing. I followed your instructions carefully, but it won't boot from the stick. I can see it in the menu and I can select it. After that it sits for 5 mins before booting from its internal drive as usual. I see the batocera website is different now. I've tried several of the downloads without success. Any suggestions? Thanks :)
change usb sticks
mac is finicky
Perhaps try an older version of the Linux distribution.
Will this work on an imac G5?
Please and thank you

this is the only video i found of batocera on mac, but you download the x86 version but on the official page there is a version for Mac
I'm wondering which one should I choose for for the iMac G3.
Batocera is actually built on Linux - because your Mac has an Intel chip in it - it is x86 just like PC
@@blackspnyx I don’t think a Batocera build exists for Power PC (iMac G3) unfortunately
If you opt to spend a bit more you could definitely get a newer iMac and just use OpenEMU and run way more systems, all the way up to GameCube and Wii. You can use Wine for any other emulators like PCSX2 that don’t have up to date Mac binaries.
you definitely don't need to spend *that* much more - I initially tried OpenEmu on a broken screen 2015 MBP I hook up to my monitor [shouldn't cost more than $100-150 on eBay] & discovered it runs Batocera v35 like a charm out of the box! it will even play a few PS3, Xbox, WiiU, PSvita & Switch titles (though these all push the 2015 barrier so some titles fail spectacularly!) It really makes a difference to get the overhead of macOS out of the way & squeeze every CPU cycle you have. Many emus are also better optimized & more recent on Linux.
I have many problem with this....... I've used your same method but the day after I start the Batocera but was all reset to factory default and lost all the installed. I've tryed with 2 different hard disk, 2 different version of batocera, but with the same result. Any idea about this auto reset ???
Thanks for your attention.
same problem here. It doesn't work on my imac 2006 Intel 2. It just freezes after choosing the pendrive.
It's really hit or miss. I'm going to try a few other gaming OS's and possibly do another video on this soon. Cheers!
Instead of batocera you could try recalbox. Also, make sure your using a really good quality micro sd card. (Scandisk class 10) I wouldn’t recommend any other drive.
This is the 24 inch model ?
I have the exact iMAC in the video.
I cannot boot from USB, the only time it excepted USB was the OSX 10.5.8 update.
it’s pretty unusable as a pc atm. If I rip out the hd and put in a Linux hd will it boot from that?
these machines work like a charm on Linux. we have a iMac 2008 and a MacBook 2007 running Ubuntu 20.04 LTS. There are burps here and there (like getting these boys to go to sleep) but all in all, it keeps us from throwing these machines away for super basic stuff. it’s a bonus they do basic emulation and now Batocera as a front end is so golden!
Hi, i have an imac g5 power mac. Tiger 10.4 installed. How can i play old Macos 9 games. For example indiana jones. i am trying on Windows based pc but with VM graphics so bad.
I think PowerPC Macs can run Mac OS 9 apps with Rosetta.
You'll need the installation media
Is it possible to connect a raspberry to a broken 27 inch imac? (2011)
what are you trying to do? you can technically connect anything to it (whether it is useful or not is another story 😉)
Can I use a internal hard drive mod wired to usb as flash drive ? What if it's not apple? .
Be kind , raised a farmer , live as a carpenter.
your best bet is to boot off a USB when you want to play games and shutdown, take the stick out, and reboot to get back to business :)
This setup work with gamecube and saturn game? Thank you
you need more horsepower for GameCube & Saturn - I have it working on an early 2015 MBP - get one with a broken screen off eBay super cheap.
My mac G5 freeze when i try to boot from USB with batocera
I don't think theyve built Batocera for the PowerPC. this video must be an newer iMac w the Intel chip
Do you think it can handle PlayStation and GameCube?
you’ll need more horsepower - I have an early 2015 MacBookPro (i5) and it barely makes the cut and definitely playable (as well as Wii)
Hi! Hope I can get an answer. Is it possible to do the same with the iMac G3?
it should be possible, I don't know why it wouldn't
@@lukasvilleneuve6948 because is another architecture.
No, not for the PowerPC architecture. Would be nice though, but don't expect N64 emulation. SNES maximum.
But, do i need to leave the USB stick in the iMac, in order to play it again at some point?
Can I do this with a 2023 Mac mini with m2 figure the most power I can run anything
birb
Can it be installed on hdd?
absolutely!
Can u play warzone ?
If he says “Linux” I’m out.
Oop. And just like that 👎
