Now that we’ve gone through much of the basics regarding the historicity of pankration, let’s start learning the basics: And what more fundamental than the martial art’s stance?
In this video, I’ll go through the various postures found in ancient Hellenic pottery and reliefs, and how they relate to modern -- or traditional-eastern -- combat sports.

I was convinced by John Danaher's argument that pankration was more advanced than modern MMA/martial arts. It was the most popular olympic sport, with some of the best athletes and smartest people developing it over hundreds of years. With such a long period of taking a sport seriously, it's hard to imagine how they would not have gone beyond the level we have today.
Not to mention the hand-to-hand combat and physicality of ancient warfare
The lack of ground and pound changes a lot tho.
back then there is no video tape. no transport to go and learn from somone. no good facility. 10 years of evolution of modern mma shits on thousand of years of martial art in the past
@@almalayuwiyyah2512don’t underestimate the Greeks. They had facilities to train Olympians
@@almalayuwiyyah2512 most science and philosophy was developed by them.
MMA is at best a reinvention. Perhaps after a few generations it will become what it used to be and eventually better.
I would love to see pankration revival, a new martial art, a new way of teaching, a new way of fighting, making it great for mind, body and soul
There are pankration events in Greece already. Like for the past 20 years.

@Andrew Yup and its constantly evolving. We will eventually uncover much of what Pankration would’ve achieved
@@martiallife4136 Yeah but most of them are just MMA with a weird uniform
I notice our Filipino Martial Arts when we translate all weapon based methods to empty hand, our empty hand have similarity to Pankration as well that makes me conclude pankration is also weapon based where the hand strikes are based on sword's strikes..
Lots of Muay thai (or mainland SE Asian boxing) and Chinese & Okinawan boxing frames and postures here, and that is heart warming in a way. Whether in the ancient Hellenic world, or in late medieval and early modern China, Okinawa, and SE Asian kingdoms, as long as there's a martial culture of empty handed folk fighting taken to a high level with a wide variety of acceptable moves and skills, we will see similar renditions of optimal human combat evolve and develop over and over. As someone who does spar, does fight, does train, and comes from a foundation of traditional Chinese boxing, it's a nice thought.
So a lot of similarities with Muay Thai, in other words Kun Bokator, which is the parent of Muay Thai. When visiting a Chenla temple in Kampoung Thom, Cambodia, there was a bas relief of Herakles and they have found some greek money from the area. Maybe there is some connection with the Ancient Khmer and Ancient Greek, more than just trade of goods.
Say, you wouldn't happen to have a link to that bas relief, would you?
the is no way that you dont have more patreons, people need to start giving you money man.
because you honestly deserve it.
Im gonna make patreon just because of you.
Much appreciated
Wow! Thank you for this, this channel is soo underrated,I knew about pankration but I never went in depth in to it till now!
When watching videos on Pankration, I constantly visualize generations of people evolving their techniques to be more fluid by borrowing from different forms and styles rather than tightening their regime to an optimal set of abilities. Today's MMA seems to put more emphasis on what will the end the match the fastest because you don't wanna gas out. Watching old school Pancrase (the legendary Japanese promotion), the matches were more drawn out and you had to really understand the sport to enjoy the technical moments rather than hope the whopping moments happen.
incredible channel! I studied ancient greek language for many years and love the ancient greek culture but you provide so much information I did not know so far! Thank you!

Hello sir!
Are you Greece based? If so, would you recommend a particular school for hard training and realistic sparing? I m bound in an island due to seasonal work but I d love to train pankration in the off season. Any directions would be appreciated!
It would be great if you could make a discord server about this channel, i think it can increase the popularity of the channel.

I always thought of pankration as smth lost in the past but now I find this channel and also found out that Many places in Greece actually teach pankration
It looks like some kind of sweep kick knockdown.
Why would you say that models wouldn't pose for the painting of an αμφορα; I'd assume a lot of these would be referenced like other art pieces from ancient times like sculptures
Well done. One thing that came to this old boxer's, wrestler's, krateka's mind was that maybe stances were driven more by the consequences of the battle to protect the fighter while seeking his advantage? After all, you could die. You could lose consciousness. You could suffer permanent disability. I would posit that the variety of stances put forth are as much a consequence of the fighters' need for defense while launching a successful attack. Just thinking out loud...
@4:30 is the rear fighter doing a suplex? That'd be pretty cool.
It looks more like he arm draged, took back and is looking for a trip from where the lead leg is positioned haha. Suplex would be especially hard since they took no gi a step too far by applying oil to their naked bodies before fights 🤣😂🤣😂
@@unwaveringdiscipline5489 good point. I once rolled with my self defense teacher who had a black belt in BJJ and it took him several tries to submit me cause I rode my bike and I was covered in sweat and sunblock. He grabbed my arm and went for the arm bar but I just slipped right out. He won of course after a minute but I got a chuckle out of it.
Probably everywhere around the world and at all times in history there has been people wrestling, boxing and kicking at each other and since all societies have some smart people, those smart people would quickly start thinking of better, more technical ways to do these things. The Japanese and Chinese were not the only people to have "moves" for fighting. I'm sure every European, Asian, African, and tribes of the Americas had moves also. For those of you who don't know, the Romans had a whole large area in Rome called the Field of Mars for practicing war arts, hence Martial arts. They called their war god Mars. They looked up and saw the red planet and thought that must be the planet of Mars since it is red like blood. As far as we know now, there has never been a large-scale, long-term trial of unarmed skills like the ancient Greek pankration, and there has never been armed skills trials like the Roman gladiator system. The Romans didn't only have gladiator contests in the Colosseum. They had probably over a hundred arenas of various sizes around the empire.
This why i don't buy the story that the Japanese 'invented' anything new in ju-jitsu. They talk like nobody knew a choke before 1830. I think the techniques probably got somewhat lost as standing armies became the norm and civilians had less need to train fighting. But people were heel hooking each other
Totally agree....Pankration was the father of all sports...Wrestling , submissions , and strikes..even weapons...
Nobody's saying Jujutsu invented everything but some new things were developed.
@@yeowchetlim5814 Just No.
where did those ceramics come from> how old? God speed

@4:46 are the angels and gods watching for entertainment or are they watching over the fighters to protect them?
Both.
Please do on what is defined by a herculean and thesius body type
The answer to this is in the video "Who Invented Martial Arts in ancient Greece". Hercules is more of the grappler type (large, muscular, focus on strength) while Theseus is more of a striker (fit, agile, focus on speed).

Martial art is universal..i am not surprised.
“Ahead of our time”…that is your assessment, also if that is the case. Then other Martial arts around the world was ahead of their time too.
Like what for example, you can clearly see in the video itself that those techniques and skills the greeks used in pankration which would be later transmitted to the east and influence their arts, are a foundation to modern MMA
How fast ancient greek athletes ran?
It’s been over 9 months since your comment. Have you found out?
That’s no oblique kick
Then what is it?
If you make a good search in ancient origins, the ancient "Pankration" is like a TOTALY FREE STYLE FULL CONTACT FIGHT... without rules!!! My ancient ancestors which they were athlets of "Pankration", they were... boxing... karate-kicking... wrestling... taking off eyes (!!!)... chocking to death (!!!)... breaking fingers... everything was on!!!
Each different athlet had DIFFERENT style, DIFFERENT purpose of his fight.
There were NO rules in ancient "Pankration"! There was NO timer, NO rounds - the winner was announced ONLY the one was still standing! That's whey ancient "Pankration" was the MOST ROUTHLESS & BRUTAL game in ancient Olympics, much much more brutal than ancient Boxing!
Spartan art...definitely needs to be brutal...if not they won't be the best at that era...
This is false, I'm afraid. I suggest watching the "Top 5 Pankration Myths" video.
