The best moments in Nathan For You and The Rehearsal are when he gets caught off guard. That moment is so great because it’s the only time he genuinely seems angry or offended.
I adore that in over a decade of this man's public career, his breaking character compilation is only 90 seconds and half of it is still him being in character.
Growing up in a Christain household I've had almost that *exact* exchange with my mom, my friends mothers, and sooooo many other people since becoming an adult. Everything is "Satanic" to these people, it's pathetic.
@@JoeSki42 New age, philosophical Satanism is actually a forward thinking movement. No belief in the supernatural or anything of the sort. No devil worshipping. Social justice oriented concepts applied on a mass scale as an ideal for making life more equitable for all.
"Jesus, Bill." really hit me on my first watch. It's a wholesome moment in an episode that I'm sure Nathan felt a lot during. I wonder if him and the Bill Gates impersonator still keep in touch.
the dumas series finale is so fucking good. its so out of style but god does it fit Nathans absurdity, and the rehearsal just goes so well with it all.
The football part with the domineering detective guy is my favorite, because it's a great insight into Nathan's playful disposition. He's actually so brave around potentially unstable, unpredictable people. A great example of this is when he goes up to the door of that really threatening guy during the pizza delivery episode of Nathan For You. Very few people would go knock on that person's door again without any idea how the guy will react. He does that stuff all the time, and apparently he thinks it's even more hilarious when his own safety is at risk. The combo of absolutely zero sh*ts given whatsoever, juxtaposed with his very real vulnerability is definitely part of why his work is so brilliant. I think deep down he's pure chaos.
It's relatable though. Perfectly captures the existential dread of us 30 somethings. Constantly oscillating between absurdist nihilism and the need to feel deeply and compassionately.
He has so few moments for how much time he has spent on TV. His show is hilarious idk how he doesn't die laughing in some of the situations he finds himself in.
Nathan strikes me as hyper aware of all kinds of people, almost like hes making up for their lack of self awareness, but has to restrain himself for the shows so much. Also, definitely a people watcher
Finding Frances episode when Bill's eating nuts in the kitchen and goes, "here I go, digging in again... [creepily smiles at Nathan]" Nathan loses it for a hot second lmao
One Nathan breaking character moment that stands out to me is when he was showing the old guy the picture of himself naked in the hot dog suit and the old guy offered to do it as potential punishment for not losing weight. For a split second there Nathan absolutely breaks character cause he’s so shocked lol
Dude that was the best moment i. The series. Theres a point where the situation gains its own monentum between the exorcist and the realtor and nathan isnt in control any more. Like its just hit criticality and become self sustaining and his look is shock and joy. You know they continued working together and sure actually became the ghost realtor. best part of it all.
The "shout out to J squad" scene with him trying not to laugh is probably the most genuine IMO because you can see he is actively trying not to do something and the rest is cut. Definitely not acting there.
The rebate episode looked like it had some real, genuine moments with him with the people he went camping with too. Not fully breaking character but just a little sweeter and more natural than his typical demeanor when they were around the campfire.
This show was a rare breed. I’ve never seen anything like it. A true masterclass in post irony and bathos; absurdity juxtaposed with realty, while never admitting you’re joking. I doubt we’ll see a show like this anytime soon. The audience has to be in on the joke, while actually never being told that it’s a joke. It’s incredibly bold and hard to pull off correctly.
Yes he breaks character. But even when he does, he scoffs or smiles. Bottom line is I can't believe there is no footage of him (on his show not an interview) laughing to the point of insanity. Hard enough not to laugh as a spectator, but as someone trying to pull all this crazy stuff off, mazel tov.
There's an old 'Nathan: On Your Side" where he goes to a laughing therapy group session, and the host of the seminar laughs aggressively in Nathan's face until he finally gives in and laughs quite a bit. Now, whether it was out of desperation to escape that man or genuine laughter is up to you lol
Nathan running into the man’s rehearsal because of anti-Semitic comments always sticks out to me, like you can see his genuine shock that he’d actually say that
I think your missing the part where we see Nathan's face grimace in the Rehearsal episode 3 when Patrick makes anti-semetic stereotypes about his jewish girlfriend.
Idk the one where he creates a fake band in order to use a fire alarm as an instrument and they're pitching song ideas and nathan sings his song hr wrote about a girl that whole thing is insanely akward
There’s that golden scene with the realtor and the haunted house when she says she was strangled by a ghost in Switzerland. There was character breakage
The best part of this is that the apology at the end is totally unnecessary. Nathan is so absolutely deadpan hilarious that there's genuinely only a couple minutes worth of captured footage of him "breaking," of which 80% is just him just smiling. When other actors break, they're crying with laughter. When Nathan breaks, he let's slip a small smile. When he's dying inside, he let's out a sensible chuckle. Absolutely hilarious, and good compilation!
Maan thank you for uploading this, it's the first time I've seen Nathan out of character. I hope Nardwuar does an interview with him. I'd love to watch hi break character like what happened to Nard's interview wtih Eric Andre, even if just for a bit haha.
Nard ruined Eric’s bit lol. Eric shows his true personality all the time tho, he’s very open that he’s actually a chill low energy guy outside of the show
He's my new favorite funny creative mind, and all his content has been original and memorable. I enjoyed seeing his progression over the years from straight parody to something increasing complex, layered and multi emotional. It's become impossible to define especially, the Curse.
My favorite breaking character moment is probably in the first episode of Nathan For You when H. Jon Benjamin is giving him interview answers over a mic and tells him to tell the interviewer that he’s a pdf-file in his spare time and Nathan very uncomfortably says “I’m not going to say that.”
i remember nathan seeming actually kind of mad at the tariff lady in the orphaned skies episode, and i feel like he might’ve broke character messing with the pony lady but i can’t remember.
My favorite is in On Your Side, where he goes to CPAC and interviews Stephen Baldwin and he starts threatening to punch Nathan You can just tell that Nathan is genuinely scared of finishing the joke in that moment because he knows that Stephen Baldwin is actually crazy enough to go through with it lol
It's typical for Nathan to have only 1 minute 25 seconds of breaking his character lol, I just picture him being in character even when he's at home by himself.
"Jesus Bill" is always the funniest one, somethin about it. Like he's heard way more weird and offensive stuff from people. But in this episode, they build this rapport that feels genuine, so when this moment happens, you get this feeling that maybe they were real chummy off set
In S2E2 souvenir shop ep, where they’re showing “The Web” at the film festival, there’s a great break at the end of the kiss scene when he’s walking away from the actress
that same episode of the gas station when he ends up camping with like 4 people and in the middle of the night he pranks a lady with whipped cream and then he just dies laughing while running away from her tent kshdjadhsjd
So funny that there’s only 1:25 minutes of him being himself in existence.
and even some of these are questionable as to whether or not he broke
Relatable
Especially if you consider how many things he has done over the years
I'm surprised it's even this long
Now it's 4:26 lol
Nathan reacting to the gas station clerk never fails to make me laugh
that was the moment I fell in love with that show. The episode had been crazy enough, but that ending? *chef's kiss*
I feel he is like sacha cohen, in that he is prepared for all sorts of responses but he never saw that coming
"What are you TALKING about?!"
The best moments in Nathan For You and The Rehearsal are when he gets caught off guard.
