- 120hp, a lot of kerb weight and only four forward gears. But I had an ex- Formula One driver with me, so surely we wouldn't be the slowest car out there? Let the fun begin.
Post-Race Beers with Chris Harris and David Coulthard should be a regular prime time show
the man with the crazy face made me so happy. im not sure why. the pureness of the competition, the joy you can see in his actions. i know your grin was also massive Mr. Harris; mine sure was.
It's like when you're driving down the motorway in a very slow car racing your mate who's also in an awfully slow car struggling to get past 80 😂

First time I've seen this side of David Coulthard. Had no idea he is so witty and funny, what a cool guy! If ever there could be one, he would make a great replacement for JC on Top Gear!

That is almost [racing stuff aside] what my step-grandfather brought back from his '63 trip to Europe, and drove well into the 1990's. He served with the Marines in WW-1, and later, in 1941, he became a Drill Sargent for the US Army, as the Marines didn't accept recruits older than 40. Thus he was involved with both World Wars, yet only served in the first.
His Mercedes was his pride and joy, and I was lucky enough to ride in it a good 20 times in the late 60's-early 70's as a kid. The Vertical Speedo/Tach was always fun to watch, and the seats were incredible. I can't say much of the handling, other than it made my dad's Fords seem, um, sluggish in corners. I would later find a similar ride in my parent's Volvo 240 DL, in the mid 70's..

My Grand Dad bought one new. He took delivery at the factory. Then spent a Month long touring vacation.
M B then shipped it to the New Jersey docks in the USA in 1965. I was 8 years old at the time. Great trip down Memory Lane!!

Glad to see Chris Harris pound around the circut, even if David broke the car. You can do well with a under powered car, just look at what the original Mini accomplished back in the 60's. I hope to see more of this duo soon. Thanks.

Reminds me of a friend's 190SL that I drove in 1967 from Chapel Hill over to Danville, VA, and back. Bog slow. No sweet spot on the cam. Vague steering and brakes. Not much fun, really.

It is so cool to see the old girl "at speed". I grew up in a 220. I remember my father taking the long, slow climbs up Highway 17 from Santa Cruz followed by chaotic down hill run to San Jose with my father's constant stating the cars brakes were overheating. The end of your video was predictable, as our baby blue '65 220 broke several times over the years.

My grandpa had exactly the same model and color, then my dad painted it dark blue. So lovely sound despite it being a luxury tourer.

What actually broke? W111 220SE's have the swing axle rear end, and the gearbox is the same basic transmission as used in the gullwings (3 of them are in back ground towards the end) minus the oil pump. Also,the reason it was going so slow was probably the extra weight of the massive roll cage and the engine running on 5 cylinders.
It's funny how excited Chris is talking to David Coulthard whereas I'd be the exact same except talking to Chris!
I seriously believe that Peter Windsor and Chris Harris have the two best motoring shows around. They're also both on youtube.

It's to warn people that a car is entering in the pit-lane.
You should go to the 24H of the Nürburgring, the beep is constantly ringing, with so many cars in the pit refueling and changing drivers and others cars going flat out on the track along the pit lane, what a show! This typical beep sound is forever linked to the Nurburgring for me.

I would have thought Mercedes had something historical in their staple that would fit the event a little more appropriately... Still it is always fun to hear Harris narrate a car related experience.
