Thanks mate, I found this a useful and commonsense approach, well explained....still helping others 7yrs + 👍
The patch out after each shot is for custom target barrels that have never been fired before (like you would get if you buy a barrel from someone like Madden or Tobler and have it fitted)This is exactly what we needed to do with new target barrels (when I was into fullbore target shooting some years back). Also folks be aware that using excessive amounts of ammonia based bore solvents (like Sweets 7.62) in STAINLESS barrels can damage them by dissolving the nickle that is alloyed into the stainless steel and that they can also rust chrome-moly (standard steel) barrels if left in for much more than 10 or so minutes.
Thank you very much for your clear, no nonsense video, your advise makes very good sence and is greatly appreciated.
Mate this is a great series you are doing. Fantastic!! I'm certainly going to give your cleaning method and products a go! Love having a honest, down to earth, informative, aussie channel....keep up the good work.
Thanks Luke, I greatly appreciate that, cheers!
Spot on Luke , I’d go so far as to say any rifle any barrel I’m still a fullbore shooter , but I’ve studied metallurgy as a component of boilermaker at tafe , no what’s happening when we run a barrel in , we’ll the inside is rough from new and the running in smooths the bore and takes away those nasty jagged edges in there , but also and more importantly you are core /work hardening the surface , look up work hardening of steels for instance hit a railway track with a hammer and anywhere you can dent it , except the head of the rail as it’s been work hardened by the bogies , yes I was on the railway as a welder ,
, so every bullet lays down deposits of copper into the bore surface , sweets or other copper solvents are designed to get this out , and personally I would go shot patch shot patch until no copper came out , you can always tell a well run in barrel as it’s copper comes strait out after 1000 rounds etc , but if we aneal copper into the surface there is a possibility this softer part may set the barrel to loose accuracy prematurely, ie the copper is acting as barrel surface in one area and stainless in another , however I’ve had barrels that would not ever stop giving up green , but they Shot well , personally next time I’m thinking of running in with chrome moly projectiles , never seen them but I heard they are out there , if they work harden and are a harder bullet then it stands to reason that they will leave minimal deposits , I’m not sure if the chrome moly would aneal into the surface , I best research that , but chrome moly work , Characteristics of chromoly
An important characteristic of chromoly is that it can be easily hardened by heat treating or work hardening. It can also be case-hardened by a process known as carburisation, where the outside of the metal is significantly hardened whilst the material retains its chemical properties, cut and pasted, I think chrome moly is the go for 1st 100 , well I’m gonna try it
Going to buy a Remington 700 tomorrow. Thanks for your vid my friend. I learn from you with every one.
Cheers, thanks for watching
Cheers Ozzie, Much appreciated mate!.. I take delivery of my brand new Oryx soon and will follow this method. take care, Skorp - WA
Interesting and informative champion. Great stuff
Thanks Ozzie .. Worth the wait and as you promised .. Looking forward to #3
Yep many more coming in the series (which are all based on what I get asked the most)
Another great video, will use your method when I take me new 223 down to the range, keep up the good work mate.
In my opinion, if it doesn't make a mention of it in the manual, it doesn't need to be done. I took my Tikka T3 CTR out and shot about 60 rounds the first day, cleaned it as usual, and it's done as well ever since.
Oath. Tikkas, being cold hammer forged are already pretty much as smooth as the bore and rifling can get.
Ozzie’s way is pretty basic and simple as it gets and seems like pretty decent system.
I like the fact that you showed the grouping. other channels dont so I'm going with your method.
Thanks for the tip from a future shooter.
Awesome video! I really like how you don't complicate things and just keep it simple!
Thanks Anthony, to me, shooting is meant to be simple, simple principles and simply fun, so I try to show that in the reviews...
And you do that very well my friend! Always subscribed! Do you plan on doing another review on the T3X TAC A1 when you get a production model? I have one ordered here in Canada, can't wait to get it soon!
Yeah not sure as yet... I'm just not sure if there will be any benefit in me doing another complete review on it...
Will use this method, thanks again for making videos like this
Sure no problem...
love all your vids mate but especially this series look forward to more as an inexperinced shooter good to have a aussie point of view on how to do things the right way
Thanks mate, more to come, just need to find time to get them all done, but I'll get there :)
I'm days away from taking delivery of my T3x Varmint (.223). I've heard running it in isn't necessary BUT will do it anyway. It's not hard to give the bore a once over in between groups of 5 rounds and it will make me feel better knowing I did everything I could to maintain the integrity of the barrel.
Yep as I said in the video you'll get all sorts of opinions but this is the way I have done it for years and it works for me. Whether or not people want to do it this way is something that I'll leave up to them...
Nice vid. Getting a tikka t3x superlite strata next week in 7mm rem mag and will use this method. You should try get your hands on one of the new tikka models, they come with muzzle brakes and cerakote and look unreal
Good job mate keep up the great videos!
Thanks mate will do!
I was surprised how many cleanings it took to get rid of the Tikka shippping grease in the barrel. I did not use a brush, just wet and dry patches with Shooter's Choice. I shot a round, cleaned, shot a round, cleaned for 10 rounds and then good to go. I live in Alaska and shoot a 130 gr Barnes TTSX hand load with 4350 out of a .270 Win Tikka.
Thanks for the video sir.
Please do a refresher, this is great
First day I shot a brand new Ruger American .22 I put 200 rounds through it, I was putting round after round in the same holes once I had it sighted in at 50 yards
Nice series and definitely helpful, however I have missed doing this for my new CZ .22lr , what do you think is a long term impact of this.
Second question is, here in Victoria we don’t have G96 available so looking for any recommendations on what to use for bore cleaning. Please suggest
Thanks
I am a firm believer that breaking in a barrel is a myth. I've tried the patch after every shot method and I've tried a similar method to what you do. Never found it to make any difference at all.
These days I simply do an initial cleaning and patching to clean out the bore of any test firing residue, shipping grease etc. Then I sight the rifle in and do a post shooting clean as you normally would.
It does but not really for an average shooter. Unless you need to predict muzzle velocity for long range firing solutions or high level competition. You can change the copper equilibrium curve if you know what your doing. Certainly not worth the effort for most shooters
Top stuff Ozzie, rimfire version in the works?
So, is the scope sight in procedure part of the break in process?
The thing is, it doesn't hurt to patch out every 5 rounds as explained by Ozzie. Each to their own though, if people think it is a myth, then just shoot it.
Yeah exactly Daz, people can do as they please at the end of the day, I just made this video because I'm getting sick of typing out what I do to all the people who continually ask me lol
Do you patch out once or until the patch is clean ( during the 5 rounds)
Have you ever tried this method vs not doing it at all with two identical guns?
As you said in your introduction, a lot of people online, both casual and champion benchrest shooters say its a myth, even high quality barrel manufacturers say the same, however I've never seen decent enough comparative data or testing to say with certainty that one way is better than another (or not at all).
Either way, the cost/time/effort to do something like your video is completely minimal and wouldn't hurt in the long run (especially if you've forked out 4 figures for a new barrel, may as well do every little thing you can).
Another great vid Ozzie!
No as I have never been able to afford 2 identical guns ;)
Even then you are comparing two different rifles. Their is no contorl group either.
oncall21 I can't seem to message you privately, can you send me a PM please, I had some info on another matter I wanted to discuss...
ozziereviews hi mate when do you recommend running the brass brush with a new rifle?
Can you do or recommend a video on proper cleaning of a Tikka t1x bolt ?
Just wondering brother how would I go about getting a 338 Lapua?
Love the smell of G96
Where it as an aftershave and you'll be assured of finding a partner who is into firearms too ;-) LOL
what do you consider to be the best cleaning agent for patching out when breaking in a new barrel? Cheers Rob
What I was using...
Excellent video ozzie. Does g96 contain ammonia? Some people say ammonia can be very corrosive.
Tony ND G96 has no ammonia, but by the same token it also has no copper removing qualities it will simply remove powder fouling and lubricants the bore.
would you please do a video on mounting scopes as I receantly bought a savage and a scope but dont know how to attach it properly
Yes mate I will, t's actually the next video I have lined up, hang in there it's on it's way!
Could you also do a video on "sighting in a scope for idiots"? Please include the name of the parts and what they exactly do, i.e. the knobs/turrets, etc.,. Thanks!
Sure, I am looking at another video on how to mount your scope (in case the shop hasn't done it for you) and also a sighting in video also... stay tuned!
+ozziereviews Thanks; will do!!!
So if i got off of graveyard shift and bought a rifle then ran 40 rounds down the barrel without cleaning it will if affect the long term accuracy? Guess i am going to find out
Would spraying directly into the barrel cause excess to leak into the action? That’s bad news isn’t it?
Another quality vid ..
Thanks mate!
hey mate great video..is that a job dewey rod? if so is there any difference between the stainless and coated steel? and how many inches is that particular cleaning rod you are using?
No, pro-shot 42". Personal preference on the stainless vs coated steel. The main thing is to make sure you don't damage the bore and/or chamber over time, but if you take your time you won't have an issue...

I know this is an old video but is it worth doing this on a .22lr my son and myself are about to get our first rifles so have no idea
It just depends how anal you want to be about the fine details of the rifle's accuracy. I would take the precaution of doing this with a competition or long range hunting rifle, but I don't think you'll notice significant effects from plinking at 25-50 yds with a 22. Been shooting all my life, and I personally wouldn't go through the effort of breaking in a 22.
is his the process for a 22 magnum rifle
🥂
Can you do a video and show where your left hand is while shooting prone. It looks like it's under the
stock. Some other people's videos show holding your right arm with your hand. How do you do it please?
Nothing special mate, holding the rear sandbag to position the rifle or if I'm not using a rear rest, I just put it under the stock...
Question, do I need to do this on a lever action rifle? Thanks
Yes, because a rifle barrel is a rifle barrel, regardless of the action... Out of curiosity, what caliber is it?
You can see the Glass house mountains in the back ground
Ozzie would a Rimfire change the breaking in method?
Yes, usually a rimfire you can just shoot it and it'll take a packet to settle in... Although in saying this if you're using a 17WSM, I'd treat it like a centrefire...
would using a bore snake and G96 work just as well do you think?
You could if you had nothing else, but I wouldn't... The rod with a jag cleans more thoroughly than a bore snake.
can you make a video on how a junior gun liscence is aquired as it seem very complicated and me and my mate are quiet confused by the instructions given
What State? and for A/B firearms?
Victoria, Category A and/or B
I'm not sure of the procedure there sorry...
***** Thanks anyways
in the US, there is a long standing (and apparent) misconception that guns are outright illegal in Australia, so as an american, I am having a hard time wrapping my head around what i am witnessing here.
Take a look at my Australian Gun Laws video to clear up the mystery czcams.com/video/x9th0TM0Gss/video.html
Hey Ozzie, great channel mate. could you maybe leave in the description an updated list of all the equipment you are using for that video. eg. what bench, bench rest, clothing etc. It helps so we don't have to go back to see if there's a review
Most of it isn't reviewed from this video... sorry
how did you get a semi auto bolt gun aussie?!?! HAHA
Hey, what happened to your bore guide? Far more important than the theoretical benefit of running in a barrel. I've been shooting for 49 years and hand loading for 42 years. Don't bother to use any barrel break in procedure anymore but it doesn't hurt if you want to.
The military really needs accurate rifles and they take care of their equipment and have invested time and money to see what helps and they break them in one shot clean etc so that’s what I do and all mine shoot good never had a problem everyone does it different but you can’t go back in time and wished you did something else
Must’ve been in a different military to me
Are you in the North Korean military?
Are you in the North Korean military?
Ozzie the Aussie?
Hey Ozzie, someone recently wound my scopes elevation all the way up, is it still safe to sight in my first gun? still waiting on TAFE and all.
Do you know how to bore sight?
***** Only theoretically, I'm gonna go to the range to get this one sorted, hopefully the RO or someone there should be able to help
Its pretty straight forward, look through the bore and secure it in the centre of a target at 50 yards, then adjust your cross hairs to the centre of the target...
you'll still have to make some adjustments when you actually shoot it, but it'll get you in the general area...
***** Yep, thought so, just aslong as I dont accidentally end up over the backstop
My dad just puts about 150 rounds in and then cleans it
Wouldn’t be a how to without a can of gn6
I was confused I thought this was Ozzie Man Reviews.
wish the 19 year old me saw this video befor i killed my 7mm-08 pumped out 40 rnds straight outta the box never shot right again
If you search "gunblue490 how to care and prepare a new gun" on youtube you will see and hear a career police arms trainer and sniper training expert tell you that running in a rifle barrel with lots of cleaning is a waste of time.....................
As I said in this video, you'll get all types of advice, I use this method as it works for me...
Thanks Ozzie, I got a lecture the other day that it had to be one shot one clean, one shot one clean for the first 20 rounds. Your advice makes more sense to me .. Great Job, keep it up.
Barrel break in is BS
Shipping grease exists, so your comment is false.
You don't need to break in a barrel.
No bore guide? Spraying solvent directly into the bore? Really?
Danny Snyder g96 isn’t a solvent
Barrel break in is BS
