- I review, breakdown and explain Band of Brothers Episode 8 The Last Patrol. I discuss the eighth episode in the HBO show from 2001 which focussed on Easy Company in the 101st Airborne Division. I react to the best moments in the episode, characters such as Private David Webster, Lieutenant Jones, Captain Winters and moments such as him canceling the second prisoner snatch and him being promoted to Major. I also compare the episode to the real events and provide an in depth recap and my reaction to the full episode.

What do you think of Band of Brothers Episode 8? Where does it sit in your ranking? Let me know your thoughts in the comments below!
Every episode of Band of Brothers is amazing, but if I had to rank them, then this is number 10. Still an awesome episode. It's a nice persepctive on the war. You can feel the change in the air.
Yeah that's fair enough. The change is definitely something that stood out to me in the rewatch of it
Generation Kill Ep.8 maybe, even Ep.8 of the Wire but this?
20 hours ago? LOL aw man I didn't realise this was a current series. Now I'm caught up I'll have to wait for the last 2! Looking forward to them.
The animosity towards Webster was artistic license. If you read his book, he does describe Easy Company as worn out, but also that he was welcomed back with smiles.
He also didn't participate in the patrol across the river. He manned a machine gun position to provide covering fire when the patrol returned. He was relieved this wasn't necessary as his position would easily be pinpointed by the Germans.
True. I'm reading it now, I find it fascinating
@@carlengel8501 They seemed to take quite a bit of artistic license with Webster for some reason. You have what I mentioned, what IncogNito mentioned above, and if you remember in "Replacements", he gave a Dutch boy some chocolate and his father states he had never tasted it before, his book describes how the father was alone, and asked him for some chocolate to take to his son because his son had never tasted it.
What is the title of Webster 's book? I would love to read it. @@carlengel8501
They took artistic license in many parts of the series. I've read Webster's memoir as well as Malarky's and Winters. Also a collaboration with Ed Shames and a professional writer. Not to mention BoB.
Winters mentions that Webster wrote a book about Sharks but does not mention that "Myth and Maneater: The Story of the Shark" by Webster became the inspiration for Peter Benchley's Book that would later become the movie Jaws.
韋伯斯特一直著迷於大海的生物 後來竟然消失在大海中 不再出現人間 可惜了他的文學才華
At the end of the episode you can see Cobb in the MP jeep, for his drinking I believe.
I thought this episode showed a lot about how the US Army worked during the war.
As the patrol is getting ready to leave, Lt. Jones is told to let the NCOs take the lead. This was so very true in a rifle company in the ETO. My dad was a company commander from the start of the Bulge to the end of the war. He told me that he depended on his sergeants for most day to day operations. He would later put his 1st Sargent in for a battlefield commission.
If there was any doubt about what a great leader Dick Winters was, this episode removed any doubt. I would have wanted to serve under an officer like him. He got the job done but used common sense in doing so.
Such is the effectiveness of the actors, I frequently look up who is portraying each soldier.
Finally!!! Waiting ages for this episode
I would love to see CZcams put this excellent series up for free. Have only viewed the whole 10 episodes once and would love to see it again. Thank you for all the wonderful movies that have been posted for free. Please put this on the list. Thanks.
Netflix has it now
Tom Hanks even enlisted his own son into the War...This is when Winters essentially "Dad arms" and protects his men of Easy Company in anyway he can, even by lying to command. I love the way they express so visually the soldiers experiences by the appearance of their uniforms. Webster's guilt is what leads him to volunteer for the patrol and earn respect from the men again...
Ironically Colin Hanks looks just like the real life Lt. Jones…
Webster doesn't volunteer, he tries to get out of it. Though, in real life, he wasn't part of the patrol anyway.
My favorite episode. I enjoyed the different interactions between the men in this episode. The acting and the writing was excellent especially is several subtle moments, like Winters calling off the mission, the banter between Webster and the other men and Jones although a new inexperienced officer was still respected by the others. The final scene of the episode when Jones and Webster acknowledging each other when they made eye contact and Webster being helped into the truck. A powerful and emotional ending.
crazy… i just found your channel and started watching the band of brothers videos and got sad when i saw it went to 7 and there was nothing else.. sure enough here’s episode 8 today
What perfect timing!
I once talked to an Indian army officer. When he was in the Indian Officers Training Academy (OTA Chennai) as a cadet in his senior terms he would have mandatory watch of various war movies every Saturday afternoon on the OTA cinema hall. Band of Brothers would show 2 episodes on one sitting. Ep 8 was his personal favourite apparently. Guy absolutely fawned over Winters and Webb.
You may want to review 'so to say' episode 11...'We Stand Alone Together'...a nice finishing touch.
Poor Martin, accidentally thrown under the bus by a well-meaning Webster 😂
It could be that Webster understood that Malarkey wasn't in the best state of mind to be leading that raid and worked things out so that Winters could see it. Then Winters observing Martin could see that he was in a far better mindset to keep men from getting killed unnecessarily.
I never took the comments from the men about Malarkey being chosen to lead the patrol being concerned about their own well being. Instead Grant and Heffron in particular seemed to be concerned for Malarkey who had not had a break in combat - I believe that he was in more consecutive combat days than any other member of the company.
Webster looks a lot like famous Rolling Stone editor Jann Wenner............... well, almost famous
Don't forget that Jones was a West Pointer. It was drilled into his head that an officer was not supposed to lie, cheat, or steal.
Yeah it's interesting seeing his conflict between what he was taught but also what actually works in the field in that environment with the men
Winters, Spiers, and Nixon were all "90 Day Wonders" Lipton was a "Mustang Officer." Jones was a West Point Graduate who had spent 4 years learning how to be an officer. Given the shortage of officers in Easy Company, why would they promote Jones and move him to Battalion Headquarters instead of leaving him with Easy where he could get some real leadership experience and learn from the Best, being Winters and Spiers.
That would assume that the Army makes sense.
Episode 8 was a masterpiece. 1st was the best overall. Then 7 then 8.
Solid ranking!
Probably another reason why Webster and Jones got along was because they were both college-educated.
This series, as good as it is, is still corrupted by Hollywood and Ambrose’s tendency toward storytelling over fact. To get a real look at the grim experiences of the US Army in North Africa, Italy, and the ETO read Rick Atkinson’s Liberation trilogy.
If you need to explain the end of an episode after the episode did end! Then it is a bad episode.
Iv watched whole series so many times ,,at least likes 6&7 more than 30 .
As a cure for not being able fall asleep I don't count sheep ,,I now recount easy company men A-Z , ie. Alley ,Blyth ,Cobb etc for z I say Zelensky ? only letters struggle with is I &Q ,,and Y and for V there is van klinken ? (In episode 4 )

Is there a U ?
now I think about it can't recall one
Ending explained ? It's not a fucking murder mystery with a Christopher Nolan plot.
Do you think it may have been a homosexual love between these Band Of Brothers, I mean 50 years I’ve seen men scoff after their dear mums let alone a 50 yr old sweaty G.I. ? Interesting thematics via Tom.
I think there is a bond through trauma and loss.
Maybe you are projecting.
It's trauma bonding. They've experienced the same horrors and understand each other's pain in ways no one else can. They know they can absolutely rely on their fellow vets because they have seen them prove themselves under some of the worst conditions imaginable. I know some combat vets, and this is how they've explained it to me. There's no sexual element in it. They simply trust each other absolutely.
I'm sure you are neither a cop nor a soldier. You will never understand
