  • Do you ever dream of backing up your files on the road-- without a computer or even a power outlet? I did. But the solutions, the Gnarbox and LaCie Boss Rugged were so darn expensive... until I found a $30 solution that not only did that... but kinda did it better: the Anker PowerExpand+ #shorts #smallbites

    Wow. THAT is great! The reasons I like this are plentiful, and I love how you brought these out:
    1. It allows you to upgrade either my hard drive and/or my phone in the future.
    2. It's not proprietary (i.e. locked into a single system).
    3. It can even work to back up my external capture method (i.e. HDMI output to an Atomos recorder with a small HDMI switch when using 2 to 3 cameras😃.)

    • @hurricaneimagesmedia
      @hurricaneimagesmedia  Před 2 lety +1

      Thanks! Yeah, I love that's more versatile than the pricier options, and that it doesn't have a battery-- I'm so tired of having built in batteries die over time. I'm not sure how well the HDMI function works. I tried watching a clip from my card on my Atamos and it wouldn't send the signal through properly (I got a screen with a version of my phone apps, but not playback). I haven't experimented thoroughly, though. It may be bit rate overload....

      @@silverlightphotoco I've got an old Ninja Flame 7". I also find it a little big if I need to move around on a project, but the old eyes do like that bigger screen.... mostly, I rely on my phone and the Monitor+ app these days unless I've got a client hanging over my shoulder or an extensive sit-down interview.

      Yes .either way will work.....just make sure you plug it in to the correct USB-C port....there are 2, one for charging and one for data....there is a decal on the Anker device which tells you this.

    Thanks for the video. But I need some further help. I have an Android phone running 8.1.0, and a Lenovo tablet running Android 10.0. On both devices, I cannot get the external storage devices connected to the Anker hub to appear as storage. I've tried using the "Storage" app, and "Google Files" app, and the file manager on the phone, and all the storage that appears is only internal to the phone. I do not have any storage directly added to either the phone or the tablet. I am using a Weego power pack, rated at 10,400mAH, 5V. The power light on the hub is lit. I have a "My Passport Ultra" hard drive connected to the hub, it's light is on, and I also have a microSD card inserted into the hub. I'm not connecting the phone and the tablet at the same time. When I connect the tablet to the hub, it is shown as being charged, as does the phone. I think it might be related to the phone (and tablet) USB port not going into file transfer mode. Hell, I don't know. I've looked for a way to set that, but it involves going into developer mode, which I did on the tablet. But it made no difference. Any ideas? Thanks in advance.

      Hmm. So I'm running Android 12 on my Samsung phone. I'm using "My Files" app (which was pre-installed). When plugged into the Anker hub, my phone registers that it is charging, so that's the same as yours. But I don't have to do anything like switch to "PC" mode. When I open My Files, I see six icons for Images, Videos, Audio files, Documents, Downloads, and Installation files (APK), and then under that it displays the Storage. With an SD card inserted in the Anker, it shows up as USB storage 1-- not as an SD card (which refers to the phone's storage/memory). When I attach a hard drive in order to backup the SD card, it displays as USB Storage 2. I typically plug in my phone into the Anker before the SD card and drive, though that's just my habit. You might try an SD card to see if there's an issue reading the micro SD. It could by the Android version, but that seems odd to me. I think I was using Android 11 when I made the video. Lemme know if you find a solution....

      @@hurricaneimagesmedia Thanks for your quick response. I don't want, nor intend, to make you suffer through an IT issue. So I tried again, hooking things up in the same order that you did in the video, same issue, no external devices appear. There is one difference between our setups that I failed to mention, and that is that both the Motorola G5 plus phone and the Lenovo laptop that I am using have microUSB connectors, so I had to purchase an adapter to connect the USB-C cable of the hub to the phone. I'm going to look into this further and see if that might be contributing to the issue. I had read on another forum something about OTG cables, and to make sure your phone is OTG (on-the-go) compatible, which is the case with my Motorola. I'll let you know what I discover. Thanks for your time! EDIT: I checked the adapters that I purchased on Amazon and it states "USB C to Micro USB Adapter OTG". I have emailed Anker support, will update once I hear something from them.

      @@hurricaneimagesmedia Yeah, I don't know if there is something in the earlier versions of Android that are the source of the problem. Thanks for trying that out. From what I read (and can understand), that doesn't seem to be the reason. I did learn that Android cannot read files on devices formatted as NTFS, which is what my HDD uses out-of-the-box. But even then, when I connect my microSD card, formatted as FAT32 (which Android can read), to the hub, it still does not appear. I have connected a couple of USB sticks to the hub (assuming they are FAT32), and they are not seen, either. Will keep you posted.

    • @hurricaneimagesmedia
      @hurricaneimagesmedia  Před 2 lety +1

      Yes, LaCie discontinued their Rugged Boss right when I posted this video, too, so that option is off the table. They've had several different versions of the field back-up drive, so they may introduce something with improved specs. Nonetheless, I don't see a reason to drop several hundred on one of their units when this way works just as well.

      @@hurricaneimagesmedia totally agree, it's a niche market. I think the first mobile backup hard drive I bought was like 15 years ago and those things didn't really evolve. The only one I found very interesting was that Gnarbox, interesting design and good features but around 1000$/€ for 1TB is way too much. I guess one can 3d print a case and put in the peripherals you presented for low price.

  • @massiveactionmedia

    It's cheaper and far more reliable to just take extra cards which are far more sturdy small and light. I use smaller cards and switch more often. So we shoot all raw and use 64GB cards (dual cards) and we have 5 sets plus a few extra larger and smaller ones for added security.

    • @zachwiegert2079
      @zachwiegert2079 Před 10 měsíci

      This seems like a better solution to me as well, especially for video. How do you organize your cards? Like, do you record to both until both are full and then store them in different spots or?

    • @massiveactionmedia
      @massiveactionmedia Před 10 měsíci

      @@zachwiegert2079 Our guys record to both at the same time (photos only) and then deal with organizing of cards/ images during a break or later that evening at the hotel (home). I think some of the guys are now shooting 128GB cards and even 256GB cards when at larger festivals. Really, though, a lot of photographers never learn how to properly shoot with a camera so they waste a lot of card on overshooting and later having to crop to get a decent image. Unless you are shooting high speed action there is no need for high burst rates. Know the shots you want and get them and always be ready for candid shots if you see them about to heppen or happening. Hope that helps!

      Using dual cards works great IF your camera shoots to dual cards. But for the rest of us, we should be backing up in the field for safety. It's way better to find out if your card or recorded file is corrupt while you have the chance to shoot it again, and inform the client of the mishap, than hours later back at your edit bay. This is a useful solution to that (rare) issue.
