    iCloud Maxes out at 2TB but you can have virtually unlimited storage using any SSD, Hard Drive, or USB Drive you have laying around. Sure you lose the benefits of cloud storage, but at least your data is completely yours, offline, and ready whenever you need it 🤷🏾‍♂️.
    All you need is a Lightning to USB 3.0 camera adapter. In this video, I show you how to use this cheap dongle to extend your iPhone storage, transfer all you pictures, music, documents and videos and backup your life. It's so versatile it can even be used for Professional USB microphones and cameras with your iPhone. It can even be used to quickly transfer all your iPhone files back and forth between a Windows PC or Mac. A true life saver! It also works with older iPhones & iPads.

      Is there anyway to transfer your music from iTunes to a flash drive? Thanks!

    • @KamaniBrown
      @KamaniBrown  Před rokem +1

      @@anythingispossiblewithtoni4580 Sure there is! Well I’m assuming that you mean copying from iTunes to a flash drive on your Mac / PC right? If so then all you should need to do is ensure that you’re on the lastest iTunes update/version, then open up iTunes, find the music/playlists, then simply select them, open your flash drive in a separate window, and simply drag them over.

      @@anythingispossiblewithtoni4580 Oh thanks for clarifying, but I will admit that I have no experience with iTunes on the iPhone. However, the principle remains the same for virtually all applications where the media must exist on the iPhone itself whether it was downloaded, saved or otherwise… from there you can simply copy them individually, in batches, or altogether. Hoping that helps 😊

    I’ve always suggested this to people who really wanna save their photos for real. They always think this is complicated.. it’s alarmingly easy. You can even dedicate an external NVMe to sync anytime plugged in.
    Good video, if more people did this Apple would lose millions in cloud storage fees.. which are 99% paid because people don’t wanna lose pictures.

    • @KamaniBrown
      @KamaniBrown  Před 2 měsíci +1

      My sentiments exactly my friend and thanks for watching! 🍻iCloud storage is mostly for convenience more than anything else. Both cloud and physical storage have pros and cons though depending on circumstances. But nothing beats old fashioned cold storage backup…. And like you said, it’s really easy to do. I doubt Apple will lose much if people are more aware because cloud storage does have its place in this increasingly fast paced and mobile world. I need it just as much as my physical cold storage.

    • @Errcyco
      @Errcyco Před 8 dny

      @@KamaniBrown you’re probably right there. It’s nice to have access from anywhere which cloud is ideal for. I just hate monthly fees. Like my google account.. my Gmail is all I have used for a decade. Now they are trying to extort a monthly fee to have more than 15gb.. the whole reason I bought a Nexus 6P way back when was the “lifetime 100gb cloud storage” but they backtracked on that in 2020. Had to delete like five years of work emails and get rid of more video in google storage to get back down to ~8gb used.
      Apple is easier to swallow but I use an iPhone and my main machine is a MacBook Air so it’s worthwhile for me. Still hate any monthly fees but I guess some are better than others. I’ll never pay google though, I’ll just use a different service that’s smaller if it comes down to it and I can forward from gmail or something.

    I tried this and it just works great! Thanks for sharing this mate, really helped a lot! The only thing to really remember is to make sure the external drive is in exFAT format. I didn't do this at first and it was in FAT32 and the copying took hell of a time (20 pics around 20-30 minutes). The only thing I noticed is that why are some of the pictures saved as JPEG and most are in HEIC format?

    • @KamaniBrown
      @KamaniBrown  Před 7 měsíci +5

      Thanks for watching and really glad that everything worked out! You’re absolutely correct about the formatting part. It’s very important that your drives are indeed formatted to exFAT. As for the picture format, something of note is that it depends on your method of copying… if you copy the pictures using the method I used in the video, they will be saved in the universal JPEG format (allowing them to be opened and manipulated on virtually any other device). However, if you copy them using the “save to files” option, they will be saved in their native (original) format which will be HEIC (the standard compression format apple uses for iPhone photos). So my guess is that you may have been subconsciously switching between both methods in your backing up process, hence why some are in jpeg and some are in HEIC format… it’s a common mistake my friend. No worries.

    That WD external storage is probably on NTFS storage format, therefore read-only, you'll see the same if plugged in to a Mac. However, if it is formatted in exFAT, APFS, or other mac-approved format, it will work.

    You have explained a lot. I was wondering how to use the adaptor for power and you gave me the answer in seconds. My next question is, How long does information last on a dongle or solid state hard drive. Over years does the information fade or get corrupted. I am very ignorant in this area so please forgive me for asking dumb questions.

    • @KamaniBrown
      @KamaniBrown  Před 8 měsíci +2

      Thanks for watching and Happy to help my friend. As long as your storage device (SSD, flash drive, etc…) is in good condition and without any factory faults, it will last you for years to come. They will last you almost forever if all you do is use them for occasional backup of data, and even if you use them heavily every single day, they should still last you years no problem.
      And no there will be no degradation of your data. Your data will be fine as long as the storage device is in tip-top shape and doesn’t fail, which yet again (as long as there’s no factory faults) would be years to come. Remember the iPhone itself essentially uses the same flash memory type found in modern SSDs and Flash drives.

    • @KamaniBrown
      @KamaniBrown  Před rokem +3

      Thanks for tuning in 😊. I used a 64 gb flash drive from PNY in the video. Here it is if you’d like to check it out: amzn.to/3UywOBa (funny enough the 128gb variant is even cheaper 😅). It has variants up to 512gb. I wouldn’t imagine you needing extra power for something like a flash drive 🤷🏾‍♂️. But to be honest I don’t currently own a flash drive beyond 64gb at the moment so I’m not sure if higher capacity versions require external power. What I do know for sure is that if you want to use high capacity storage without the need of extra power, the lighting to SD card reader with a high capacity SD card (512gb and above) will work. I did a video on this here: czcams.com/video/p4urlGjFZAU/video.html. And here’s the link to that item as well: amzn.to/3L0JVYL . • @KamaniBrown
      @KamaniBrown  Před 8 měsíci

      Thanks for watching my friend. But yes the SSD I linked is different because it is overall cheaper and more user friendly. What I used required 2 separate purchases of the SSD itself and the enclosure which worked out to be more money than the 1 I linked with added work of you putting it together (I used it because I already had it on hand). The 1 I recommended is cheaper and simple plug and play. All you would need to do is format it in recommended exFAT format using your PC or Mac.
      Here is a cheaper option from another trusted brand: amzn.to/3E0xnMp
      However, you will need to get the USB C to USB A cable or adapter separately. The one I originally recommended comes with everything you need and is also from a trusted and reliable brand (Samsung) plus it will also be faster when using or transferring back to a PC or Mac later on.

      You’re most welcome my friend and thanks for tuning in 😊. Yes indeed PDF files and any other file type stored on your iPhone can be copied using this method. It should work with the iPad as well, however to be honest I would recommend going a step up and getting the iPad 10th generation with USB C for just $30 more here: amzn.to/3EQF08K. From experience it will be more versatile and will give you more mileage and versatility as an investment.
      If you do decide to get the iPad 10th generation, you’ll be able to use this simple and cheap usb-c dongle for data transfers and backup like in this video (it’ll even allow you to use SD cards as well as USB 3.0 devices as shown in the video): amzn.to/468PSuS

    If the SSD adaptor housing has an external power port you are in the game. If not knowing where the power is inserted via the cable feeding the drive you could add an isolation diode to the power contacts and add an additional DC jack to the drive and power it with an external 5 volt supply that can provide at least two amps of power. Be careful of polarity and add the isolation diode in a location where the power on the USB port comes into the drive housing and before it feeds into the interface circuit for the drive.

      Hello my friend. Yes I recommend that you format the drive to exFAT format using a PC or Mac first for best results. And yes you will indeed be able to view the Apple photos on a windows PC. There are 2 ways you may be able to view them:
      1. Copy and paste them to the drive: then they will end up being copied in the universal “jpeg” format that can be viewed on almost any device.
      Or 2. Download the HEVC extension from the Microsoft store to support the format. Although if you have a PC with an updated windows 11 it should just work regardless, without you having to download anything extra.

    • @KamaniBrown
      @KamaniBrown  Před 9 měsíci +1

      Yes indeed it should work with any and all file types because it’s basically like copying / moving files between your iPhone and a PC / Mac in terms of the procedure. Almost any storage device will work as long as you format them in the following formats: exFAT, APFS, APFS (encrypted), FAT32, HFS+ of FAT. You will most likely have to format any storage device you buy into 1 of those those formats using your PC or Mac first before use. I recommend exFAT format because it will enable you to use the storage device on either Mac or PC, however, you can stick to APFS format if you are heavily invested in the Apple Ecosystem. It also goes without saying that the storage device must also be a single partition.
      For this purpose, I recommend this Samsung SSD drive: amzn.to/3YkWIdy
      Thanks for tuning in my friend 🍻.

      @@gioderri9955 Happy to help 😊. Oh it’s a HDD … those are tricky because they need a lot more power than a SSD, flash drive or SD card. So here are a few things I suggest:
      1. Use a higher power supply like 30 watts and up (a more powerful power brick with the same usb c cable should work fine)
      2. If you haven’t already, test the hard drives on a computer to see if they are still working properly (keeping my fingers crossed 🤞🏾 that they’re not de@d)
      3. The last resort If possible, is to try and acquire or borrow a SSD or flash drive big enough to hold the data, copy the data to it, then use that instead. If it comes to this, check my pinned comment or description for the SSD or flash drive I would recommend or reach out back to me here 😊.

      Thanks for watching 🍻. The WD external drive was formatted appropriately to exFAT, the issue was that it wasn’t getting enough power (she a energy guzzler 😆)… so apparently I needed a powered usb hub for it to work.
      And yes my friend Air Drop is indeed faster and easier, but there are many situations like my job for example where that isn’t an option and you need to backup your data directly from the iPhone itself. Plus there are a lot of people out there that still don’t own a Mac but have an iPhone 😅.

      @@KamaniBrown Thank you for your reply. i saw that many people told you about the formatting of the WD drive and you answered back that formatting was ok and you solved with a "powered usb hub".

    What is the advantage of using this lightning drive over just putting a SSD adapter straight into the iPhone that's the big question? Is this faster?

    • @KamaniBrown
      @KamaniBrown  Před 6 měsíci

      The older iPhone series (below the new 15 series) does not allow direct lightning to usb c connection to SSDs… not only that, but you will need additional external power to activate and access the SSD. That’s where this device shown in the video comes in.

    What is the format on the ssd? Will the iPhone reformat the ssd if it’s not the right one?

    • @KamaniBrown
      @KamaniBrown  Před 9 měsíci +3

      That SSD is actually formatted in exFAT. However, you will need a PC or Mac to format the drive first. You can use any of these formats: exFAT, FAT, FAT32, APFS, APFS (encrypted), or HFS+.

    The one you recommended is not available and when I look up another one from that company, it says it won’t copy to a external drive. You need a powered USB hub to do so please advise I’d like to buy one.

    • @KamaniBrown
      @KamaniBrown  Před 10 měsíci

      To be honest my friend I would advise you to purchase a ready made SSD such as this 1: amzn.to/3XMsUGo … it’s more user friendly and cost effective. It also will not require a powered usb hub. The powered usb hub is only needed for the mechanical hard drive that I tested last in the video.
      The storage devices I used in the video were what I had laying around for a while to drive home the fact that you can use virtually any external storage device you have laying around at home.

    • @KamaniBrown
      @KamaniBrown  Před 9 měsíci +1

      Thanks for tuning in 🍻. Well unfortunately bro the lightning port is limited to usb 2.0 capabilities, so yes for the SSD and the HDD you will need additional power. The HDD specifically I discovered (thanks to other viewers in the comment section) will apparently need a powered usb hub. The SSD works perfectly fine with additional power from the phone charger and the usb drive needs no additional power at all.

      @KamaniBrown  Před 3 měsíci

      You don’t have to eject any of your drives from the phone. Once you’re done copying to and/or reading from it, all you have to do is pull it out. And yes it is perfectly ok for long use. Use it for as long as you want/need just like with using your computer.

    Can you instruct me on how to save photos in batches?

    • @KamaniBrown
      @KamaniBrown  Před měsícem

      Sure! When in your photo gallery, simply press “select” and then pick all the photos (and even videos) that you want to copy… then press the share option and then press “copy”. Then you go to the files app, select the storage device and paste just like in the video. For ease of reference though, you can watch this update video I made recently that shows me copying multiple photos (and video) at once: czcams.com/video/Ug7Aolot1Jw/video.html
      As a side note, you can also quickly and easily select multiple pictures and videos at once after pressing “select” in the top right corner of your gallery, then selecting a picture/video, then keep your finger on that selected pic/video and then dragging your fingers across and down to quickly select a ton of them at once.

    • @KamaniBrown
      @KamaniBrown  Před 8 měsíci

      That’s strange. I’ve never encountered such an issue. Did you copy the photos exactly how I showed in the video? Because if you did, they would be copied in JPEG format. But if you shared it to the storage device by using the share button, it will be copied in the original HEIF format which may give issues with trying to view on Windows PC.

    When a photo or video taken by iOS is copied into the external media, is the copied file a HEIC/HEVC file, or a downsampled PNG/JPG/MOV file?

    • @KamaniBrown
      @KamaniBrown  Před 8 měsíci

      Well you have 2 ways to copy photos and videos that affect the formats differently. The first method is as I showed in the video where you select them, copy, and then go into the files app and paste them into the external storage media that you choose… this method will change photos from HEIC/HEVC to the universally recognized JPEG so that the photo may be easily viewed and manipulated on pretty much any other device without fail. I chose this method to show specifically in the video to make things easier for most people.
      The second method is to copy via the share button where rather than selecting “copy”, you will select “share” and then “save to files”. This will take you directly to the files app where you can select the storage device to copy your photos/videos or any file type for that matter. This method will directly copy/share your file to the external storage device in its original format with no change, no downsampling, no nothing… just a direct 1:1 copy of the original file.
      Video formats and other file types will remain the same no matter what method you choose to copy them… only photos are really affected by the method.

    • @KamaniBrown
      @KamaniBrown  Před rokem +14

      Well the easiest way I know of is to simply press the “select” option at the top right corner in your gallery, then select 1 photo/video at 1 corner of the screen, then just drag your finger to the opposite corner and hold it there while the screen scrolls and selects all the media you wish to select. Then you select “share” in the bottom left and just like I showed in the video, you may copy or move them to your storage device via the files app. It’s the same for the Files app as well, the only difference being that you will have to press the 3 dots in the top right corner to see the select function first. Hoping this helps and thanks for tuning in 😊.

    I have a couple old ipod touchs (6th generation), one is version 12.5.3 the other is 12.5.4. I bought a lighting male to female usb adapter to transfer photos to it via usb stick while I'm out of town and without access to my pc. I plug in the adapter and usb drive and they both light up as "on" and the ipods recognize it and even open up the photos app when its plugged in, but when I got to transfer the files, the usb device does not show up in my files app like it shows in your video. All I have on mine is "iCloud Drive" and "Recently Deleted". Do I need a third party app as a go between or something? I've also tried selecting the photos and "saving to files" but there is no option to place the photos in a folder as there is nothing under the "on my ipod" dropdown.
