    So, what you've been reading throughout Eternal and the dlcs are translations of ancient books, taken from within Urdak or Hell. These books are false in many things they contain.
    Urdak rewrote history to erase the truth behind Davoth. They lied not only to the Slayer, but any realm that came in contact with the Maykrs, including the sentinels.
    Anyway, great little series. I haven't followed a videogame playthrough for years at this point so this was great, seeing some new blood enter my favourite game.
    The Slayer is used as a weapon. The illusion of a free will remains, until you realize that your freedom and activation always relied on the Seraphim(s) specifically. First when Hayden (Samur) released you in 2016 and now when his brothers put you back. There's a ton of holes waiting to be filled in the next entry, deliberately left unexplained, quite possibly to setup whatever is making primevals like Davoth.
    Now that the world doesn't need him, he goes away.

    You're definitely ready for master levels, and horde mode. The last rounds of horde get pretty wild.
    So many players ignore the story, because "it's Doom, you're not supposed to care about story, just shoot stuuuf". And many streamers think they are cool by ignoring it, "too cool for school" so to speak. And then all through the game they are saying "what is that? What's happening? Who are you? WTF is this? etc" It starts with the first codex entry about hell barges, they ignore it, then are wondering what that big titan is you see when you get off. Sucks to be them.

    A really good comparison that I can make is that Davoth becoming the Dark Lord is basically what would happen if Lucifer was able to overthrow God. Lucifer would’ve been known as God and God would’ve been cast down to Hell to become the Devil.

    Great to watch you play through my favorite modern shooter! it was fun to watch your play improve, and by the end here you really had a handle on the game. i just love this game so much, its a masterpiece in gameplay design and something I return to over and over. I even enjoy the story and cutscenes, I think they created a fun mythology that doesnt take itself too seriously and provided the perfect backdrop to the action.
    horde mode is a blast, and the master levels are bonkers. i thought it could also be fun to watch you react to a video of really high level eternal gameplay, someone like Zero Master or SmvR. the skill ceiling for this game is crazy high and its truly ridiculous what the best players are capable of.
    agree on the final boss being disappointing, bummer but the DLC over all was awesome
    another great playthrough, cheers dude!

    My interpretation of what happened to Doom Guy at the end was that he essentially suffered the largest power-withdrawal that is physically imaginable. With the Dark Lord gone, the piece of the Dark Lord that was imbued into Doom Guy by the Divinity Machine vanished, reducing him to a mere human once again.
    Could be wrong, but this makes the most sense to me.

    How is running around in a literal circle, then going to the centre, pushing the same three buttons and repeating for _ten minutes_ anyone's idea of a good fight?
    I hope the franchise moves away from the DOOM PIÑATA innovations. When you can basically reset your character state at will, it's hard to have stakes and tension.

    • @purebaldness
      @purebaldness Před rokem +2

      That's an interesting way of looking at it. I find Eternal can be very intense and getting competent enough to run Ultra Nightmare raises the stakes significantly. I feel as though the game is balanced around the pinata system, with it's aggressive AI.
      For a single player game, it almost rivals the tension from I felt playing Quake 3 duels

    • @wrswrftp
      @wrswrftp Před 3 měsíci

      @@purebaldnessthe mechanic just doesn't work well on the dark lord. He is a slightly better version of the Marauder. Big letdown

    • @purebaldness
      @purebaldness Před 3 měsíci

      @@wrswrftp I agree. The dark lord is tedious as hell. Far too many health bars for a fight that barely evolves, or involves much in the way of mob harassment like the other boss fights.
      I was referring to OP's second statement. I think 'push forward combat' works great in an FPS and I don't see how it lacks stakes and tension when it demands aggressive play for success. I would be happy if it remained in DOOM.

  • @MADVILLAIN669
    @MADVILLAIN669 Před rokem +5

    Honestly, wasn't a fan of the story presentation in Eternal and it's DLC. It was way too generic, setting up dull lore, camera zooming out in 3rd person to showcase all the microtransactional DLC costumes. It feels so antithetical to the Doom 2016's design philosophy where it it would mock this sort of exposition heavy-dialogue. In terms of gameplay I loved it, but the level designs being so videogamey with dumb mario-esque floating platforms with chains just doesnt make sense. Made me miss the grounded design of 2016's Doom way more.

    • @antonego9581
      @antonego9581 Před rokem +3

      i used to think the same but after playing Eternal a ton I actually have come to love the silly lore and setpieces. It's not cool in the way the 2016 lore was but its cool in a different way, it feels like playing through a mythology, like a future labors of Hercules type thing

    • @Prizrak-hv6qk
      @Prizrak-hv6qk Před rokem +1

      Umm... as far as I know, Eternal doesn't have any microtransactions. All of the costumes and skins are unlocked via the gameplay achievements and it's nice to have them as rewards for your progress. 2016 was trying to appeal to OG fans and Doom 3 fans at the same time. Eternal drops the sci-fi horror pretense and goes for the OG Doom "all action" feel. 2016 was a great game in its own right but Eternal is my favorite SP action experience of all time. I got over 700 hours into it, playing it all year during The Pandemic. The gameplay loop is incredibly fun and rewarding, tickling all the right spots in my brain, being way superior to what was in 2016 (which I got about 70 hours into) in that way. The game lets you do and fell unbelievable stuff once you truly master the loop. The "gamey" environments are all cleverly designed to teach you how to master movement and traversal. I also greatly prefer Eternal visual design and variety, with the enemies closely matching the OG games, every level having its own visual theme, etc. The graphics engine is unbelievable, as far as the visual fidelity to performance ratio. 2016 also ran great but the texture quality was really lacking.

      @@MADVILLAIN669 Interesting. I never had to open the store since Ancient Gods, Part 2 was released and they didn't sell cosmetics back then. It is lame, even though most of these items look like they were available through in-game events and are largely MP centered. As far as the other stuff, to each their own. IMO, "video game logic" works for arena shooters where you defy all laws of physics and murder imaginary creatures in ridiculous ways. Gameplay is king and this is where Eternal exceeds.
