He left home as a child. He traveled the world and visited places few men have seen. There is no way to contact him. Yet, whenever a death occurs in the family, he knows to return home. He just knows. Visiting his Alabama hometown for his sister's funeral, an enigmatic black man, John Kane (Sidney Poitier), is appalled by the discrimination and hatred he witnesses. There is a strike going on at the same time as the funeral, and some in the community assume he is an outside agitator. In reality, Kane is much more than anyone could imagine.

I caught it on Turner Classic Movies in 2010. It was tremendous! I'd never heard of it prior to the telecast.

This movie captivated me decades ago. All these characters so focused on their lust for political power, to obsessing about their social relationships, to their employment situation. So focused on only what is in front of their noses, they have no awareness that their world (all of humanity) is spiraling down into wickedness. The report by Brother John to ____ will seal the fate of humanity -humanity will be destroyed.

Poitier (and Will Geer) are excellent. It ends with a stupid spell-it-out explanation, they should have just left it to the viewer to decide, so turn if off for about the last minute. If it was made today, it would if anything be even more relevant.
