    Great review. I'm looking for a replacement of my Bell MIPS adventure helmet. Do not recommend a tinted visor as there are times when you get late to your destination and get stuck riding with the visor in the up position at night and face covered in bugs. Same goes for unforeseen fog. Only problem with the internal visor is that it may impede reading the digital instrument cluster.

    • @BillysBikeAdventures
      @BillysBikeAdventures  Před 3 lety +1

      Thanks for your comment! Great to hear that you liked the review. I have found that the internal visor does not impede the clarity of the digital instruments, so great news for a shiny day. Agree in hindsight on the tinted visor. Would more likely go with a tinted pinlock that can be removed. I would prefer the tinted pinlock over the internal visor. Ride safe. Billy

    Good review, I have a black and white version and love it. They drop down sun shade is something I love, living in Australia its almost necessary and I won't be going back to helmets without them. Using a tinted visor sounds like a recipe for an accident in the rain and/or at night. I find off road I will tend to ride with the wind shield partly opened or fully opened with the shade down, plenty of air flow while still keeping stuff out of your eyes pretty well. Running without the peek is fine but highly advise using the added rubbers, the empty holes whistle at 100-110kmph. If your using coms going a size up helps with clearance around the ears, and it can be very difficultto get it all the panels back into the helmet. Sena sf4 cables don't go through the hole either but using the clamping attachment it works and fits well to the forward chin. The padding is very comfortable however with a short beard it is not. The helmet can get hot for slow off road riding when closed up, especially with the chin flap in, but having the visor up and fitting goggles or just using the sun shade its wonderful. Will buy it again once I hit the recommended life span. (5-8 years depending on how horrible your climate is)

      Thanks for your comment. Some great info insight in here. I do like the built in sun visor but I wonder what Airoh have compromised on safety for this.Overall a great helmet but does not vent as well as the Arai's that I have had. Don't know yet if I will stay with a helmet that has built in sun visor. Ride safe. Billy

      @@BillysBikeAdventures At the moment I am comparing the Airoh Commander against the Schuberth E1. I am not sure which one to buy yet. Unfortunately, my dealer sent me an Airoh that was too small and that doesn't fit on my head. So I have to wait until next week to get the right size. Only then can I correctly compare both helmets during a test drive.

    Awesome! Although, tinted visor is all great and fun until you need to ride in the dark. Then it's no fun at all, and that's why I desperatly need a helmet like this. Great review though, had my doubts about it since it's so reasonably prized, but you made up my mind for me. Thanks! =)

    Will never buy a helmet again without the drop down internal visor. They are awesome. So both Shoei and Arai are losing money by not providing adventure helmets with these features. Just bought the Airoh commander above my beloved shoei helmet because of this feature. Previous helmet was a Shoei GT air which fits perfectly.

    Thank you for the review! I am considering the Commander 2 and this was a great insight to what it's about even though they are a little bit different.
    The hole for the cables was a good idea but if not all or at least most intercom does not work it's a bit of a hit and miss.
    I would like to try it before purchase but it seems like a really good helmet. Definately cheaper than my Shoei. Hope that doesn't reflect too much on the feeling of the helmet.

    Thank for the review, I too have a couple of the Aria Tour X4 and have the tinted visors, my recent tour to France has put me off the tinted visor as during thunder storm the skies went black, the visor even with the pin lock steamed up and it was so dark I could not see a thing all this at 10 am and the pouring rain, I would have done anything for a clear visor at this point. I have gone off the Aria as it lets in more water than the titanic, so was looking at the Airoh as it has the sun visor which is a must when touring so am convinced now this is the right helmet poor show on Aria in not having moved the Tour X4 on in design

    • @BillysBikeAdventures
      @BillysBikeAdventures  Před 4 lety

      So true. Nice to have a tinted visor but if it has to sit up due to light (and the rain due to mist) then the up / down visor is perfect for that. My only question is what is Airoh giving up on safety (if anything at all) to have the drop down shades fit into the helmet. Other than that it is a great helmet 👍🏼

    The downside of a tinted visor is if you ride in shaded areas off-road, for example through the woods, it will make things too dark and all you can do is raise it and ride with no protection. With the drop down sun shield you can simply raise and lower it as required.

    Great review. I differ in opinion when it comes to the internal visor vs tinted main visor. When touring in Europe and one goes into a long tunnel a tinted visor is not always good and has to be opened. Whereas an internal visor is just switched up and the clear visor still does the job in the reduced light. Another issue is the evenings. I have an Arai X-4 with a tinted visor. Great during the day. But I am continuously opening the visor on an evening not ideal especially in winter and in the rain. So I'm all for internal visors. Just got the Commander in the matt grey Skill colour... Lovely helmet.

      Thanks for watching the video and your comment! I ended up not getting a tinted visor opting for a tinted insert for the reasons you mentioned and evening riding so now I have the best of both worlds. Just bought a Ténéré and need an adventure lid. I’m a massive Arai fan but feel they’re a bit slow in innovation and scared of losing their safety quality by sticking to their well proven designs. But technology needs exploring, some of these helmets with built in sun visors, comms compatibility, and cool designs are really starting to win the day. Thanks for this mate. I was asking on my latest upload (which hits today) for skidlid suggestions with all the features you’ve described. I’ll get one of these this week! I’m subbing and watching more of your stuff. I purchased this helmet after much research and deliberation over alternative 'peaked' Adv lids such as ARAI Tour-X, Shoei Hornet and BELL MX-9 and I definitely made the right choice. It a great helmet and I echo the comments about its features made in the video. The ARAI and Shoei are premium brands at significantly higher cost which I couldn't really justify over the cost of the AIROH (I paid £250) given the AIROH does everything I need. I use this helmet on my 450exc for Enduro riding on Green Lanes and also on my KTM 950 Adv for longer distance TET stuff and road riding and it's great in both scenarios. I'm not a goggle wearer, I choose to wear clear safety specs just to stop the wind in my eyes and flailing branches etc... but I like the option of the flip down sun lens which is a benefit over the ARAI and Shoei (BELL MX-9 has the sun lens too I think I recall?). I like the style of this lid - angular and modern looking - and the colour/graphics options (I chose the fluro orange to go with my orange bikes, obviously 🤪) All round a great helmet and I'm very happy with my choice 👌

      Hi @kwakageoff ... I still considering Arai vs Shoei vs Airoh. As I know Arai good in ventilation. Shoei good comfortable and I used Shoei helmet right now and loved it. Airoh as Billy's reviewed, good choice, cheaper but high features. And I heard if usually use size XL, we have to choose size XXL (one size bigger) for Airoh. I will choose orange Airoh also because my bike is KTM 390adv orange 😅

    Bought one recently because of the fit, price (it was an absolute steal for ~250$), large eyeport, composite shell, pinlock and of course because it is adventure/supermoto/motard - just what I looked for.
    Didn't find much negatives yet, but still: helmet needs tiney hex key to dismount visor and its mechanism. I'd prefer PH or torx. Little plastic parts aren't top notch, but if they were it would be called Arai/Shoei and priced accordingly, right?

    I'm new to the motorcycle world. My first helmet was a Nolan N87 and my first bike was an NC750x. I mostly drive on the road. After 5 years I have upgraded my bike to R1200GS and I want to buy a new helmet. I'm not sure what to buy. I love the look of dual sport helmets, I am thinking of buying a modular helmet too, but most of my friends insist that I buy a fullface street helmet. I'm so confused.
    I want a helmet that is quiet and safe. Sunvisor is a must for me. What would be your suggestion on this matter?

    • @BillysBikeAdventures
      @BillysBikeAdventures  Před 3 lety +1

      Hi Serhan. Firstly I hope you are enjoying your R1200GS, a great bike! Regarding helmets, it is a personal choice. It's hard right now to try helmets on so picking one can be risky. What I can say is that the internal sun visor is not as great as it may seem. To be honest I would probably be happier with a helmet without the sun visor and have a tinted pinlock insert that can be removed at any time instead. The Airoh is lite, a wide range of view due to the slightly wider visor, looks great. As for quiet I wear ear plugs all the time so don't really notice if a helmet is quiet or not. There are some great modular ones out there but I have yet to try a modular helmet. They have their own advantages. If you like the Airoh for the sun visor and have had a helmet with a sun visor before and you like it then the Airoh is great. I am getting a tinted pinlock for it so won't be using the sun visor. Not sure if that helps. Let me know if you have anymore questions. Cheers Billy

    hey, thank you for your review. You mentioned something about the camera mounts and I noticed you had a front mount for the gopro on the other helmet. would you say it is going to be possible to install the front/on the chin mount like you had on your Arai? Also... I am gearing up for the African tour - would you think it would perform well in the heat? Have you managed to spend some long day in it by now? What are your thoughts now, nearly 2 years on? Advance thanks!!

    • @BillysBikeAdventures
      @BillysBikeAdventures  Před 2 lety +1

      HI Bronek. Thanks for watching and your comments and questions! Just getting to your message as I have been away for a few days in Scotland and just got back. Good timing as I was wearing my Airoh. The camera mount that I have on my Airoh is a GoPro standard mount stuck to the side of the chin close to the front, positioned so the GoPro is just below the air vent when it is open. The GoPro mount for the Airoh sits on top of the helmet but I don't think that is the best spot for it so hence I use a stand mount on the side of the chin. Venting is not a great feature of the Airoh, whilst it is very light compared to the Arai, the Arai is much better at venting so in heat I think the Airoh could be a challenge if not travelling 40mph or above. This is the main downside of the Airoh for me.My Scotland trip had me riding all day and on the days travelling up and back it was a long 10-14 hours in the seat. I would not wear the Arai for this. Just too heavy vs the Airoh. I would have had a very sore neck if I took the Arai. So its a balance, which is more important for you African trip, ideally you would have both right, good venting and a light helmet but if you can't have both then go with the priority for you. So i am still happy with. the Airoh after two years in but now on the hunt for a light helmet that vents well and has great build quality. Hope that helps. Let me know if you have any other questions. Cheers. Billy. PS have an awesome African trip

      Hi Dusan. Thanks for watching the video and you question. A couple of things I would say on the negative side. It does not vent very well so definitely have pinlock insert. The visor outside of the pinlock mists up but does not impair viability. I am experiencing some vibration from the peak now, have not found out why yet. That’s it, all the other things I said in the review are still great, view out of visor, it’s lite, comfortable. Still a good helmet in my opinion. Let me know if any others questions. Stay safe. HI there. Still in good condition. The only thing is the screws that secure the visor on are a bit rubbish, not because they don't work but very small hex head screws that don't ever seem to fit the right hex screw driver so one of them has now rounded off. Other than that a pretty good helmet that I have enjoyed using this last couple of years. Hope that helps. Let me know if you have any questions. Cheers. billy

      Hi Hendro. Thanks for the question! I don’t wear glasses so unable to provide a accurate perspective on this. However, with the Airoh having a wider field of view due to the broader visor it may be more comfortable by having less helmet press on the arms of the glasses. Style of the arms will also be a factor. Obviously the flatter the better. Sorry I can’t be more helpful. Ride safe. Billy

    • @BillysBikeAdventures
      @BillysBikeAdventures  Před 3 lety

      HI Steve. Thanks for watching the video and your question. It's a really good question that I don't know the answer to. What I do know is that if your helmet, in the UK has a 'P' on the label inside the helmet then it has passed the UK standards for a 'protected' helmet with chin protection regardless of rounded or angular chin styles. If your helmet has 'NP' then this means 'no protection' for the chin as some helmets will have what looks to be chin protection but in testing does not work. Airoh claim on their website that the Airoh Commander is ACU approved but yet my helmet does not display the necessary sticker. I will get in touch with Airoh and see what they have to say about this. Let me know if you have any other question.

      Hi Sn1per. Thanks for watching! Venting is the biggest issue with this helmet and as such you will need to make sure you have a Pinlock insert to stop the fogging. Its a poor venter compared to the Arai TX4 and versus the LS2 Explorer, these are both very good. Other than this it is still a perfectly good helmet.
