Thomas Buresh *I can understand that! Timeform has given Arrogate a 141 rating for his Dubai win. That is the fifth highest ever. He has broken the 140 barrier, which by their measure puts him in the category of " All Time Greats."*
      *147 Frankel*
      *145 Seabird*
      *144 Brigadier Gerard, Tudor Minstrel*
      *141 Mill Reef, Arrogate*

All American Chutzpah *It is isn't it, but I guess I'm biased and I think he should nave been placed higher. They said the track was not completely dry. In fact, the night before, it just poured! I think I would have liked to have seen him assigned a 143. :-P Thank you and you're welcome my friend. :-D*

Man, if I owned Arrogate, I would keep him racing and try to get him to the richest horse in the world. He's only 2 million off of #1. But sadly he'll probably retire after the BCC.

I wish arrogate didn't start his career due to slight injury so late! we are blessed to have seen this horse in our lifetime! horses like arrogate just don't come around. And to the owner of BIG A...please don't retire em! horse racing needs arrogate! but I know the risk is to high to not retire em

    • @stinknbee

Donald Jarvis III *I know this won't be a popular comment, but I think they should retire him now. He already beat California Chrome in the Breeders' Cup. He has earned the third most money than any other horse ever. Racing is much more risky than standing at stud. His name comes from the Latin of "arrogant." And that is just my point. Why push this great horse and risk having something tragic happen. Who would be happy then? Look at Mastery. He is lucky it was not life threatening. Arrogate has nothing left to prove on the track. When people compare him to Secretariat and other horses from racing's past, then I think it is time to do the wise thing and stop while you're still on top. Then he goes out as the "Big A." champion. California Chrome's connections made the mistake of not retiring him while he was thought of as the best. So Arrogate comes along and makes Chrome look like some okay horse. I really would rather remember Arrogate as "One Of The Greatests" to set foot on a track.*
*Arrogate comes from the Latin arrogatus, a past participle of the verb "arrogare," which means "to appropriate to one's self." The Latin verb, in turn, was formed from the prefix ad- ("to" or "toward") and the verb "rogare" ("to ask"). You may have noticed that "arrogate" is similar to the more familiar "arrogant." And there is, in fact, a relationship between the two words. "Arrogant" comes from Latin arrogant-, arrogans, the present participle of "arrogare." "Arrogant" is often applied to that sense of superiority which comes from someone claiming (or arrogating) more consideration than is due to that person's position, dignity, or power.*

Some corrections: Phar Lap was never going to have progeny. He was a gelding. He would've raced for awhile and retired but that's it. Secretariat didn't sire AP Indy, Seattle Slew did. Slew ran as an older horse after winning the Triple Crown so that actually is the opposite of what you'd have wanted. Secretariat sired AP Indy's dam. Arrogate doesn't have the most money ever (as of my writing this), he's 3rd right now and close enough to be #1 all time if he keeps racing. He's #1 out of horses that've run at least 1 time in the US. "Arrogate" isn't a derivative of "arrogant." It means "to take or claim (something) without justification. e.g. "they arrogate to themselves the ability to divine the nation's true interests"
synonyms: assume, take, claim, appropriate, seize, expropriate, wrest, usurp, commandeer."
They can't retire him now, the breeding season started a month ago. He wouldn't get the best mares and his babies would be later so he wouldn't get a good start at stud. They have to wait til next year regardless. He's also massive and getting more talented by the day if that's possible. There's nobody that can beat him so you'd be leaving millions of dollars that are his for the taking to a bunch of second stringers at this point. Secretariat retired because he needed to go to stud for the sake (sort of) of Penny Chenery and her farm. The career of Riva Ridge in particular and the syndication of Secretariat were very important financially.
California Chrome couldn't retire earlier because he didn't get a good enough stud deal offer so they needed to keep racing. If they hadn't, he wouldn't have run at age 5 which was his very best year. Chrome's people were after more money and thankfully that let us see Chrome at the top of his game. As for racing being riskier than standing at stud, horses get hurt there too, sometimes just from freak accidents or illnesses like Dubai Millennium or Saint Liam. You can't count on them staying healthy.

He has earned the MOST money... but that is a meaningless statistic.... horses that ran back in 1956 might have won $1,000 for a race... but that $1,000 in todays dollars would be $30,000. So simply adding up money won means nothing at all. American Pharoah won almost $3,000,000 for the triple crown races... and Secretariat won less than $300,000 for the same 3 races. Using money won as a standard of comparison would indicate that AP was much, much better than Secretariat because he won more money. And that is crap. Unless you convert all monies won by all horses to a constant dollar, then you've proven nothing at all.
