My Mum took me to my very first G&S production. I was lucky enough for it to be The Mikado with John Reed playing Koko, I think the last time before he retired from performing. Even allowing for looking back with rose-tinted specs, I've never seen a better Koko and I don't think I ever will.

The late Stephen Sondheim owed a great debt to Gilbert and Sullivan. Their patter songs, with amazingly intricate rhymes and ratt a tatt pace, requiring singers to be on top of their game every moment, for every syllable?? He probably watched and listened to these. They are an utter joy, of course, but a real homage to that masterly art of singing and reciting...

How lovely that Sullivan chose to homage/pastiche his own, earlier, song! . . .
Written 20 years before he contributed 'On a tree by a river' (aka 'Willow, tit-willow') to 'The Mikado': 'The Willow Song' was composed for a staging of Shakespeare's 'Othello' in the 1860s. It was set to the words - written in Shakespeare's text - of a song sung by the character of Desdemona.
That 'serious' song - that then became famous in Victorian & Edwardian drawing rooms - pre-dates the 'Tit-willow' aria by 2 decades.
Echoes from that song can be heard in this lovely solo, sung here to great effect by the character of Ko-Ko.
    Such a talented & versatile composer! 🎵 🎶 🎵 🎶

Now I feel just as sure as I'm sure that my name
Isn't Willow, tit willow, tit willow
That 'twas blighted affection that made him exclaim
"Oh, willow, tit willow, tit willow"
And if you remain callous and obdurate, I
Shall perish as he did, and you will know why
Though I probably shall not exclaim as I die
"Oh, willow, tit willow, tit willow"

So basically KoKo gave up his engagement to Yum Yum so Yum Yum and Nanki Poo could be happy, then saved Nanki Poo from having to marry or face execution for not marrying Katisha by convincing her to marry him through a sad song about a suicidal bird.
Truly, there has never been a more selfless mfer in all of literature than KoKo.
