- I went out to Fernando's farm over the weekend and cut up some pecan wood to start building up a nice stack to split. I have to have a good pile of seasoned smoking wood for later in the year. Just thought I'd get a little video to share.

My FIL gave me the Harbor Freight electric splitter when he got rid of his wood stove. I've split oak and osage orange without trouble on it. If you're just splitting smaller stuff for smoking or to take camping, it's a great tool. It's almost as dependable as my Fiskars splitting axe. I've been very interested in the DeWalt chainsaw mostly for maintaining the mountain bike trails around me. The relative quiet nature and not having to carry a fuel jug is very appealing as the trails often run close to houses.
I was kinda skeptical with the chain saw but you proved that it is more than able to handle what you can throw at it!!

Got me a small kinetic splitter a couple of months ago. All I need for my cooking wood splitting needs. I use half splits and sometimes quarter splits so I don't have to damper down too much. It helps keep a proper burn without too much heat.
I'll look that up. I actually found a guy locally that cuts, splits, and delivers a truckload of pecan wood for $125. I'm going to start with that and see how it works out for me.

Good start. We use a good bit of Pecan wood for smoking here in south GA. Another wood that is good for smoking,if you can find it is Catalpa.

fine little chainsaw, you need an electric over hydraulic splitter, new around 300.00 thats Canadian, a little 4 ton unit would be perfect, i have one in the basement I split a little kindling with it through the winter, between my garage and my house I burn about 8 cord of hardwood a year. I have a big gas splitter 30 ton unit for splitting the firewood. great channel love the machinist channel as well but new sub to the adventure channel they are both awesome, keep up the great work.
I like Fernando's tractor! That wood will make for some fine smoke.
I found that taking the bark off gives you a better flavor smoke, it's not so bitter or cigar like smell and taste. Try it both ways and let us know how it turns out. Like the saw, battery powered tools are getting better for sure, I remember buying a cordless drill back years ago and that thing wasn't worth a damn.
For occasional light splitting look at the Harbor Freight 10 ton hydraulic splitter. It is small, stores easily and works for small stuff. Replace the jack with air over hydraulic and you would have a nice little splitter for small stuff.

I sense a new offset smoker in Adam's future. I'd say sooner than later on the wood splitter, because the splitter will debark a lot of that wood so you don't have to worry about any potential mold on it.
Invest in a good quality axe. It'll be a good friend.

Good start on the wood pile Adam. BTW, I'm not sure about your area, but here you can rent a log splitter from ABC rental for a day or how ever long you need it. May be a good option since it's not something you would need everyday. Cheers buddy!
Goof idea Russ, I almost forgot about our local rental places. Fernando has an unlimited amount of pecan wood I can have, just want a good way to split it. Maybe once I get a nice pile of it I can rent a log splitter for the weekend.
I just got a bunch of hickory for smoking from my dad a couple days ago. It's nice having a source for wood with how much they charge in the store for it!

That would be a good project for your shop... make a log splitter on the cheap with used and or repurpose scrap.

Arizonans are blessed with an abundance of pecan groves. We all have regional preferences in the source of our smoke . Being raised on the east coast , l grew up with the standard briquettes of the day . Moving to the southwest 50 some years ago , l was educated to the wonders of smoked meat . l tend to use the type of wood my taste buds are currently demanding. Pecan , Hickory , Mesquite are standards . By accident l discovered Blue Paloverde , a truly wonderful flavor adding smoke that is not that commonly used.
You have the ability , why wait to get a log splitter , make one .It will turn out better than factory made , and you can do a post . Just sayin brother , you're our teacher , teach .

Dude with your skills you could make a splitter with no real effort, 3hp electric motor bit of machining and welding, stout chain and sprocket and boom there u go, be a great project for the other channel to 😍
You need to get Abby a wood lathe. Pecan makes great wooden bowls, pens, bottle stoppers etc. A guy I worked with asked me if I wanted some Pecan wood a few years ago. It seems his neighbor parked his nearly new pickup in the back yard and a bad wind storm came up. A huge Pecan tree came down (Years ago it was planted close to a block wall) and smushed the pickup. I got a bunch of the wood, made all of the above mentioned items. My friends who were into smoking got my off cuts and raved about the taste. Now that I have a smoker I'll have to try it. Oh, split that stuff while it's green if at all possible. Wood turners call this wood Pecancrete because dang it's hard when it is dry.
Also dries faster if its split...
$9 splitting wedge and a sledge. I've done a cord of wood that way. Small stuff I use a 3lb precision fitting hammer, for big stuff I pull out the 20lb persuader.
Don't spend your money on a log splitter. Get yourself a Dewalt miter saw and just cut those up into little 3" long rounds. Hit those with a hatchet and they split great. It's ok to try to hoard some wood but unless you cook enough to use it up the bugs will get in it and it gets moldy and stuff too. I know it's free and I know what they get for them chips at the store make it really tempting but trust me you can get too much. I don't have a source for pecan but I use a lot of hickory and oak too. I get my wood in the neighborhood. Folks cut trees and put them out for the city to pick up. I get a few choice cuts to cook with. Use the oak for steaks and the hickory for your pork. Just build a charcoal fire and put a few rounds right in the fire. Oh yes try cooking some salmon from Costco over an oak smoke fire....delicious!

That DeWalt saw tears through that pecan wood. I have an electric B&D saw that doesn't work anywhere near as well as that.
My father has an electric chainsaw like that, I was surprised at how much work it does. He also finds it very handy because it is so quiet, so he can use it in camp grounds etc without upsetting people.
I got my log splitter at Tractor Supply over 10yrs ago, It works great, I would never go back to splitting it by hand again, what a joke.
I wouldn't cut smoke wood with a chain saw unless the bar oil is something like vegetable oil (non petroleum). I use a hand saw or Sawzall.
With shapers hahaha 😂 I got the feeling he might have to build a abom smoker if not Russ Jones has one that I think Adam would approve of

That tiny stack would take 10 minutes to split by hand. For ten years I cut, dragged out of woods and hand split 8-10 cords of firewood per year for heat. Now building an Abom built 'Refined Redneck' log splitter would be great content. Welding, machining, hydraulics, its a perfect series for the channel

Actually you might go to a mall to find a hardware store.... where you can buy a splitting maul. English is horrible with so many different words that have different spelling, different meanings, but sound exactly alike.
If you make it to Fort Worth at some point I have a pile of big mesquite and post oak with your name on it.

@@AbomAdventures Well I have some on the ground already cut up into smoker length pieces. Also have 2 more small trees to cut down as well.
The mesquite is about 8" in diameter. I have retired my old offset smoker and gone to the lazy side for brisket and now use a pellet grill. The mesquite was mainly for brisket.
If for some reason you make it through the area on one of your trips ill have it on hand for a while and its all yours. And maybe some brisket as well.
Don't pass on the oak. Great for campfires. You can make a great fire pit (actually 2) out of the end of a 55 gallon drum and some bricks. They last a couple of years and then you get another drum.
Just to put it out there, I'm a pretty big dude myself and the Husqvarna 531309565 chaps fit me reasonably well. They cost more than my saw did though!

Build your own splitter, not powered but wedge type with leverage. Check out Amazon for examples.
Unless i use battery powered tools everyday and have a well organised charging system, I find them pretty much a waste of time....very convenient when charged, but the batteries don’t like being left on charge for weeks on end...perhaps I need to up my hobbies a bit and get more pecan wood cut!
I keep mine charged with a few waiting to be used. I keep all my chargers and batteries in one place or in the tools. They’ve done nothing but their job and been very helpful in my world.

The DeWalt flexvolt stuff is great for homeowners who do their own yard work since you can get things like the weed whacker etc.
I'm going to be one of those annoying folk in the youtube comment section :( I would maybe consider mesh or something to maintain a small gap between the stacked wood and brick work. It will probably be fine as your climate is warmer and drier, it's just something I do myself for firewood outside the back door of the house.

My grandfather was the same way. He worked on log stackers, and ended up with a lot of wood. Didn't want to spend thousands on a big log splitter, and had cylinder, valves and the steel layin around, so he built one that hooked up to the 3 point on the back of a tractor and ran of its hydraulics. The Louie Logger '83 its called. Built by a guy named Louie in 1983 :)
I actually spent a lot of time on that thing as a kid pushin the lever back and forth as grandpa loaded logs in. My sister and her husband have it up at their house now that grandpa is gone. Still workin.

Log splitter. Yep, I think you could source a quality hydraulic system with your past and I believe you could make some awesome Abom content with the fabrication and machine work. I feel like that appeals to a huge demographic as well.
just burning that wood is a loss of extra income, many people in the northeast would pay handsomely for exactly what you're doing with it food smoking,cut it and sell it over e-bay
