4K CAB VIEW: Nordic midsummer night train from Oslo to Ål

- It never gets truly dark here in Norway during summer. When you think it's going to be dark soon the reality is that the sun has already started to rise again, this also means that during the winter we have the complete opposite with "short days" and "long nights".
The summer is usually the time when we spring to life and enjoy all the light we can.
This is the over night train from Oslo to Bergen with departure from Oslo Central Station diverted over the Gjøvik Line because of track work between Oslo and Drammen.
Captured with the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera I'm finally able to show you the true colors, light and view from the drivers cab on a night train in 4K.
On Saturday July 25th at 8:30PM CET I will be live answering questions here: • TRAIN DRIVER'S CHAT: ... .
PS: There is a young moose strutting careless across the track between Sokna and Trolldalen ;)
Enjoy!

Damn, Norway is so pretty after dark
I'm in awe. Another masterpiece. Over 3 hour 4K video of Nordic near-midnight beautiful shades of blue sky made with the perfect combination camera/sensor/lens to bring out all the wonderful lights of Norway. Complete with interactive chapters and Table of Contents! Thank you RCG.
Thank you so much 😀
It's very strange to see this, in the middle of the night and you can read the newspaper on daylight... It's like evening to the Netherlands ad summertime.. beautiful journa and a great nature... Maby can I have a christmas tree... they are many to in Norway... hihihi..
"When the lights go down in the city..." Excellent, this is great!
Travelling through some deep mysterious woods and scenic views of twilight, with a smattering of inky blue clouds in midnight skies... what more does one need.. its so perfect .. Thank you so much for sharing this amazing video.
Wow, thank you ❤️
When is from Norway..... I always remember Mayhem, Burzum, Emperor and Dark Throne. True Black Metal bands in Norway. Really like your video. Always support and keep up your awesome work 👍🏻.
Completely different vibe to this one, rumbling quietly though the semi-darkness. Have a mug of hot cocoa beside you while you watch
Thank You, _WonderKrys_ !!!
A video starting from the hotel and made by night : very good, excellent job !!!
*_🌷🌿😃R👏C😊G👍🌿🌷_*
Yep :D The new camera makes it possible to make videos like this :D
Thanks to you and the rain here I finally get to sleep and rest a little. Thank you.
Enjoy! ❤️
Gorgeous.
thank you . Norway is so beautiful.
It really is!
You know @RCG, I have followed your channel since the early days and have enjoyed every minute, but this video really punches home the commitment you give to the rail company, and to the herd over such unsociable hours. Thank you.
❤️❤️❤️❤️
I'm sitting in Phoenix Arizona, enjoying your fantastic rides through Norway....What a great escape. Thank You.
Glad you enjoy it! ❤️
On full alert you pilot your train full of sleeping bodies at a gentle somnambulist's pace through the eerie Nordic midsummer half night before handing over your reins and joining your passengers in the Land of Nod. Thank you so much for providing the answer to the question that was nagging away at me throughout the journey!
You are so welcome, and Thank you! ❤️
It's even better in a sleeper car while you lay in your bunk being gently rock to sleep.
@@knife-wieldingspidergod5059 Absolutely! I was rocked to sleep by the Caledonian Express as we went uphill and down dale through the Lake District. Cosy as you like!
Nice to watch this video. Here in the Netherlands we have the so called period of the grey nights in which it doesn't get fully dark as well. But of course Norway is more North so it is spectacular here.
Yep, imagine how it is in northern Norway, where the sun does not go down at all during summer :D
@@RailCowGirl In my younger days I worked on the UK deep sea fishing boats as radio officer, often venturing around the North Cape of Norway and deep into the Barents Sea. In the summer the sun never set, simply going around all day in a circle. At midnight it would shine from due north way over the other side of the North Pole. The winter months - now that was something else, never seeing the sun at all from the time we got north of the polar circle until such time as we were heading home again, often a period of 6 weeks or so.
I always enjoy seeing the diversion route, and this summer night light is amazing!
I totally agree! ❤️
Initial walkthrough was so cool 😍
Norway is so beautiful...I really wish I can visit it someday!
Thank u RCG....one of the best channel out here !!
Thanks! 😃 ❤️❤️❤️ Hope that you'll be able to visit some day :D
Always the best when it comes to producing train videos! ❤️❤️😊
Glad you like them!
Thank you RCG for starting the weekend off with this great episode...👍
Thank you so much!
Epic run in twilight, this was so awesome!! Great work!!!
Glad you enjoyed it :D
Loved this! Thank you so much for sharing your journey. I live in Canada, and have never visited Norway. I look forward to it one day, and also to riding your train. 😄
Glad you enjoyed it!
This country girl loved the first part of this trip. All it needed was the Cannonball. ( Steam engine from TV show Pettycoat Juction)
It was really nice to see your intro. I will never make it to that part of tje world.
This train is so quiet, no click clack noise. I love it.
I've always heard about the summer nights there but this is the first time I've seen it. Thank you. The new camera is amazing. I worked night shift for over 19 years and I also had to avoid Burger King 😃.
Thank you! ❤️❤️❤️
Haha! Brilliant :D I just loath the way the body just CRAVE fat and carbs when you're working crazy hours. Completely tilts everything into crazy mode :D
You ARE THERE. THIS IS VIRTUAL.
Lovely, now I want the same thing in the Snow...
Not going to see much of a sky then LOL but it'll be awesome :D Hopefully I'm going to be able to catch the stars :D
Seven years of night shifts here, I hear you. It a "lifestyle" you never get used to.
Splendid stuff from RCG as always. Thank you.
Thank you :D Nope, you never get used to working like this. I'm usually completely wrecked after a trip like this... Socially retarded and just weird.
I like the night run. It narrows the view of the world down to what is in front of the head lights.
Thank you, glad you liked it :)
I am hooked on Norway because of your postings...sukreah !
YAAAY! :D ❤️
This was nice , Thank you
Glad you liked it! ❤️❤️
Waaaoo... Night video. Beauti route!👍😊🙏
love this channel. nice way to wind down after a days work
Glad you enjoy it!
Enjoyed every Km. That bed looked good at the end.
Awesome video!!!
Glad you enjoyed it
What a lovely video!
Please keep sharing videos
Thats a great journey
Thank you, I will :D
Wow! It seems like it doesn't get totally dark in Norway, even after midnight. It is a wonder to see a clear blue sky at two am in the morning. I wonder how people manage to get sleep at night there when daylight doesn't completely fade away. I suppose they are used to it. Anyway, thanks for sharing this video.😃
Blackout curtains
Your videos are...hypnotic. I just can´t stop watching, even though I am about to go up in a few hours and really need the sleep...but, here I am...I am half norwegian and have travelled a lot by train in Norway, mostly to Stavanger, but also to Bergen. I had plans to go to Norway this summer, but as a (half)-swede I am not welcome this crazy year... All the best to you!
Beautiful! No dark because blue and bright skies in night time. 1:55:18 a moose 😃 , see description
It's so beautiful running the night train here during the summer :D
Thank you RCG for these videos. Not sure you intended them to be used like this but when my anxiety is high or I need help sleeping, I watch these. It's like I'm asleep on the cab floor while you drive XD
Thanks a lot! You're not alone, many people are using my videos to sleep or soothe their anxiety. Hope you're feeling better by now.
And my 7 year old grandson loves the moose!
I do too, as long as it get off the track in time :D ❤️
So good! Thank you
Thank you! Glad you like it!
Excellent job !
Congratulations.
Thank you so much!
Sooooooo Excited !
Yaaay! ❤️
After watching some of you videos, I wonder will we ever get to see the person with that lovely voice? I missed my calling, you have the most amazing job in the world. Norway has to be the most beautiful place on earth. Thanks for the towns names because I follow along on google maps.
Hello :D That might happen in the near future ;) And thanks for loving the videos ❤️❤️❤️
@@RailCowGirl Can't wait! Stay safe and be well.
@@user-David-Alan You don't have to wait. Check out one of her first videos (no, I won't tell you which one).

Nice Video, Interesting To See Norway At Night, As Opposed To The Day Time Especially In Summer Where The Sun Doesn't Completely Set, If Not At All In Some Areas. In Regards To The Locomotive That Was Used In This Video, VR In Finland Uses The Locomotives With The Same Design, But Theirs Are Classified As "Sr2s". Both Are Based Off The Swiss SBB-CFF-FFS Re 460/Lok 2000.
I'm speechless.
A magical journey in a fairy-tale land.
The summer nights here are truly magical
First! 😄 Will definitely be watching this tonight after work. Exiting!😃
Yay! I’ve been waiting for a nighttime video. Going to watch this one now. 😍
Hope you enjoy! ❤️
RailCowGirl Just finished watching and I enjoyed it very much. Completely different atmosphere and feeling to your other videos. What’s it like driving late at night? Does it make you nervous? I’m learning to drive a car at the moment and I find night driving terrifying lol.
@@TheNightFlower Nope, does not make me nervous. We know the line very well, so there is not much different from driving in daylight. We obey signals, and we see those at night too :)
The only difference is that things looks like they're moving faster, and that is a result of less light hitting our retina :)
RailCowGirl Thank you for explaining! I really enjoy your videos and look forward to your next trip. Peace from Adelaide, South Australia. 👋
¡ BONITO VIAJE.BUEN "SOL" DE MEDIA NOCHE !.SAludos desde Alicantee,España!!!✔👍🚂
Why Nordic view look elegant and quiet scenery
I really like this one. Different is good!
Glad you like it!
Muy bien. Silencioso. Gracias
Thank you!
This is very beautiful and surreal i love dusk & twilight.. My guess is since your closer to arctic circle you get twilight blue sky most of the night in summer . I've been told up in the arctic circle you get the sun going up and down the horizon over and over - "midnight sun" - around summer solstice
Totally loving the starting from your room , journey to work etc. Not sure I'd make it as a driver though if you have a duty to resist burger king :)
I like the walk to work part, it's great! sunset is 2 hours longer it seems than midwest...
Great video. Love having these on as background while doing other stuff. I was curious why all of your tunnels look like they are dug with pick axes and dynamite. Very cool new tunnel.
Because they were. ;)
The colors in this video are spectacular. This is the right camera for any kind of late evening or night photography and whatever lens you are using. I like how you try to give us the best RCG. You are appreciated.
Thank you ❤️❤️ This is absolutely the right camera for videos like this :D
@@RailCowGirl lately Im been getting your Live 4K Cab view at like 1 or 2 am CDT. Before I would get them like around 6 or 7pm of evening. Not complaining because normal times are different around the world. I like the international interactions of the herd on RCG. These night train adventure are pretty spectacular. It's drawing a whole new group of people and the discussions are just as enlightening. Thanks again.
@@wiseolesage I did not broadcast this "live". I just released it. Will do the Q&A-live session on Saturday as normal. Decided to shift things around :) Have the video up first, then do the Q&A :D
@@RailCowGirl was replying to the last live done a few days ago.
Okay regularly on Saturday. I like that. Q & A.
Thank you
Thanks for watching!
Hey you forgot the "Troll Valley " Do you remember? Who can forget that one 🤘😁
Awsome video ❤. You are the best.
LOL! I should maybe make that translation a standard ;)
@@RailCowGirl Off course. Not many can beat that one 🤘
It would be great if you could capture the northern lights during the winter. My next trip to Norway will be during the winter so I can visit the Drammen station. A lot of beautiful metropolitan views from Drammen and there's a grade crossing I want to capture on video at Steinberg, between Drammen and Hokksund.
I wish I was in Norway. 🤠
Hope you're able to visit some day :)
@1:55:18, Don't you know, Cowgirl? He's one of your Spotters. He was crossing the tracks to get a better view of the train as it passed 😄
Yes, his name is Sverre.
YES! Perfect video for me! I love night driving a lot! I used to do lots of night driving until client contract got changed and now I haven't done night driving shift since 2018! 😭
Ål to Bergen is my favourite route to watch especially ascend to Finse and descend as well! Any chance for night version of this? :D
I have a question for you, I know after arriving at Ål, you carried on to Voss as resting crew but if you drive from Bergen to Ål at night, do you stay at Ål for an hour or two break and drive back to Voss/Bergen? What about Ål to Oslo, also?
Also, I noticed even with line speed at 120 kph but you appears to be driving much slower, below 100 kph, I think, is this because of passenger comfort while they are sleeping?
Thank you for taking your time to answer my questions!
Nordic midnight sun is beautiful and I hope to get a chance to go up to Tromsø, which is much further north in Norway to experience midnight Sun up there soon in future!
Idk why by the first thing poping up in my head was that this video felt lika a long benchmarking for real life train simulation
I love this one more at a lower picture quality, preferably 360p. It really casts the horizon of the distant peaks in a sublime tone, more mysterious
class
2:44:35, one of the most beautiful views I've ever seen
The noise level in this loco is high.
I don't think Ive been on this route. TY for the info about the sun never setting or rising. do you ever see the sun or is it perpetual twilight this time of year? I didnt think Norway was that far north. Neat!
This is summer, so it means it never gets pitch black out side. The days are long the sun never really goes down. And the winter is just the opposite. :)
I live in Sweden we waited til 1:30 am to go to the Drivein to see the movie in Midsummer
Yep, same as here :D Just love it when it's so light outside :D
1:31:48 Noctiluminescent Clouds :D
I love the editing here, down to how you've broken the video down in sections based on which part of the track you're on
Thank you so much :)
I would upgrade the headlights, what were they thinking using only @200 watts?
Obrigada ❤️

Thank you, glad you liked them.
Resist burger king, why the hell would you do that? Lol. Great vid thank you for sharing.
Eating food like that before a nightshift is not good. Eating food like that is not good for you at any time :p
Wow
I have a question, what is the safest thing for a train driver in Norway to do in the event they think they are going to strike a Moose? Is it safer to hit the Moose at speed? Do you slow down? Do you have to report hitting the Moose? I'm very curious.
We do not slow down. Hitting the moose at speed is the better way, less chance of having a severely injured moose running around. We report a hit and the Traffic controller contacts one of the hunters/trackers in the area they have a deal with.
@@RailCowGirl Thanks so much for the response! Great videos by the way! I've been subscribed for almost 2 years now!
Slower speeds and no horn/whistle?
Thank you for another great trip! I'm going to live in Norway......someday. Is your speed slower just because of the darkness?
No speed is not slower. It's the night train, it has a more "slacker schedule"
What an awesome video.
I was in ål recently and was amazed by the roundhouse and turntable.
Have you ever taken a locomotive onto the turntable or been in the shed?
Never, our company does not use any of the facilities there except for the bunk house and station building.
I can really understand your Burger King reference, there have been many nights that Burger King or Jack in the Box have kept me awake.
I seen it!
@01:38:03 Ha ha ha ha! I'm like Pavlov's dogs! If I see someone wave, I wave back - like the driver of the freight train. ROFL
I guess there is a "no Horn" policy between midnight and 6am?
Not on the signals with the yellow and diagonal black signal under it :D No horn between 10pm and 6am
Could please make a video in which you explain the Norwegian train signal system and the speed signals?
If you look in the description, there is a link to a signal chart :) And I have made a video about it :) You can find it in the playlist called "Information run"
@1:18:08 I was laughing about Waffleheim, & actually waved at the screen as the train passed the level crossing. Now I feel like an idiot. ROFL
🤣😃😄
🤣🤣👋
Lol why resist Burger King? You definitely earn the occasional meal treat.
Burger Kings some dangerous stuff. LOL. It can make your clothes shrink and gravity stronger. LOL
@@RailCowGirl lol oh no, good thing I don't eat there, I encounter enough random strong-gravity patches as it is! (Balance issues) But Wendy's is definitely making my clothes tighter lol
@@edmontonhermit1156 curse those pesky calories and the gravitational pull around those delicious temptations 😂
Wouldn't it be great if the engine lights actually moved to shine on the tracks in a curve? I've seen some car and truck designs that had maneuvering lights that followed the curve of the road. Must be difficult moving at night when your lights are illuminating the trees.
You're referring to adaptive headlights :) it does not really follow the road, it follows the movement of the steering wheel combined with the speed of the car to get the right angle on the lights.
Such lighting would have been brilliant to have on a locomotive, but it means more electronics and fine adjusted moving parts... The more electronics and moving parts you have the more likely there is having a system to fail...
Such system also have a very high cost, and to keep rolling stock easy to maintain and easy to repair ... having a exotic system like that is just luxury, especially when you know that having adaptive headlights are to be able to see where you're turning, whilst a train follows the track no matter what :) No steering wheel needed.
RailCowGirl........not for steering, for seeing large rocks, people and animals on the tracks. Lots of things get hit at night. Live your videos, be safe.
I guess
1 EL.18. Locomotive
3 WLAB2 sleeper coach
1 FR7 dining car.
3 B7 passenger coach.
Weight 424 tons.
Lenght 204 meters
Top speed 150 km/t.

I think that somebody asked last year, I don't remember, but... do you have WC in EL18? Or are you going to the coach behind, or at the train station? It's just a practical question. This trip is over 3 hours.
There is no toilet on the EL18, and there is no time to goto the toilet without delaying the train, so you do what you have to do before starting the trip :)
@@RailCowGirl Actually, when I was younger it wasn't problem to go to soaring in glider for 6-8 hours, but when years of age come, it's a different story :D Thank you for your answer, stay safe and have a nice evening.
Thankfully I'm still able to hold it for a whole day. LOL
@RailCowGirl AMTRAK's (America's Passenger Rail Company) ACS-64s And Many Freight Locomotives In America Have Toilets On Board.
Amazing! The sky is only truly dark for 30-60 minutes. Of course that's gotta be hell in the summer. I've always wondered what 24 hour sun would look like. Because we know the sun "rises" in the East and "sets" in the West. But if it sets in the west and then right away rises again, how does it get back to the East so quickly? The things one thinks about when bored 😯 Was this shot on the 25th of July?
Do you let the Warmwaffle family know when you are coming though so they can come out and wave? That's some dedication to do that at midnight!
I Usually send him a message on my passing time :D he's pretty awesome and dedicated :D
1:55:16 the moose!
What are the rules for horm at night? Most of the time you were silent - but not all the time!
If you look under the horn signal where I don't sound the horn there is a added signal a yellow rectangle with split diagonally yellow and black :) That is called a "day signal" and indicates that the horn is to be used between 6am and 10pm :) which again means that there is no need to sound the horn between 10pm and 6am :)
What's that falling from up to down on left side of screen around 1:31:40?
It's a moth flying to the light :)
