    SIX-DAY WAR
The Six-Day War was fought between Israel and a coalition of Arab states (primarily Egypt, Syria, and Jordan) from 5 to 10 June 1967.
In the months prior to the outbreak of war, tensions were heightened. In May 1967, Egyptian president Gamal Abdel Nasser closed the Straits of Tiran to Israeli vessels, which Israel stated was a provocation for war. Nasser then mobilized the Egyptian military into defensive lines along the border with Israel and ordered the immediate withdrawal of UN personnel from the Sinai.
On 5 June 1967, Israel airstrikes against Egypt, precipitating war. Israeli forces then launched a ground offensive into Egypt's Sinai Peninsula and Egyptian-occupied Gaza Strip. By day six of the war, Israel had occupied the Sinai and Gaza. Jordan, which had entered into a defense pact with Egypt just a week before the war began, did not take on an all-out offensive role against Israel. However, the Jordanians did launch attacks against Israeli forces to slow Israel's advance. On the fifth day, Syria joined the war by shelling Israeli positions in the north.
Egypt and Jordan agreed to a ceasefire on 8 June, and Syria on 9 June, and it was signed with Israel on 11 June. In the aftermath, Israel gained control of Syria's Golan Heights, the Jordanian-annexed West Bank (including East Jerusalem), and Egypt's Sinai Peninsula and Egypt-occupied Gaza Strip.
    SIX-DAY WAR - TIMELINE
1948 - As a result of the 1948 Arab-Israeli War, Israel is established as a Jewish state, controlling 75% of Palestine, 30% more than was allocated to it in the 1947 UN Partition Plan; no Palestinian Arab state is formed; in the following years, a permanent state of war exists between Israel and the adjacent Arab countries, Palestinian militants launch cross-border raids into Israel from bases in Egypt, Syria, Jordan, and Lebanon, while Israel conducts retaliatory attacks and accuse Arab countries of supporting the Palestinian infiltrations
Mid-1960s - Tensions rise significantly because of the following incidents:
1965-1966 - Following a dispute over water sharing of the Jordan River, Israeli forces destroy Syrian construction projects that would have diverted water away from Israel
November 1966 - Israeli and Jordanian forces battle in Jordan-occupied West Bank following a Palestinian attack
April 1967 - Israeli and Syrian forces engage in a fierce battle involving planes, tanks, and artillery units
May 12, 1967 - A news outlet reveals that Israel might invade Syria - this news report starts the chain of events that would lead to war
May 13, 1967 - The Soviet Union informs Egypt that Israeli forces are massing on the Syrian border; although Egyptian authorities determine that the Soviet information is untrue, Egypt, complying with its mutual defense pact with Syria, places its forces on full alert and deploys troops on the border with Israel
May 19, 1967 - Egypt expels the UN peacekeepers in the Sinai
May 23, 1967 - Egypt closes the Straits of Tiran to Israeli shipping
May 30, 1967 - Egypt and Jordan sign a defense pact
May 31, 1967 - Iraqi forces arrive in Jordan; by then, war fever is seething in the Arab world, indicating imminent war; the closure of the Straits of Tiran prompts Israeli authorities to declare that this is an act of war, and Israeli forces are mobilized
June 4, 1967 - Israeli authorities give the green light to start war for the next day, June 5
June 5 - 10 - The Six-Day War is fought, and Israel achieves resounding success, winning the East Jerusalem and the West Bank, the Sinai Peninsula, Gaza Strip, and Golan Heights - tripling the size of its territory; a UN ceasefire ends the war
June 19, 1967 - Despite achieving total battlefield success, Israeli authorities are cautious and infer that the captured territories may pose a long-term liability, and offer to return the Sinai and Golan Heights in exchange for a peace agreement, but the proposal apparently is not received by Egypt and Syria
September 1967 - Egypt, Syria and other Arab countries issued the Khartoum Resolution, which advocate no negotiation with Israel and that only force would be used to win back the lost territories
