- Dionne Warwick's 1963 "Anyone Who Had A Heart" hit the Billboard Top Ten in January 1964 and peaked at #8 on the Billboard Hot 100. The tune was a crossover smash and hit #6 on the Billboard R&B Chart and #2 on the Billboard AC Chart. The tune was also a Top 10 hit in Australia, Belgium, Canada and South Africa. Written by Burt Bacharach and Hal David, the tune was presented to Dionne in unfinished form while she, Hal and Burt were rehearsing in Burt's Manhattan apartment for a recording session a few days hence at Bell Sound. Bacharach had finished the score but Hal had written only about a third of the lyric and was struggling with what Hal regarded a bad accent in the sixth line of the first stanza, which he could not resolve. Burt played a snippet of the tune for Dionne, and she fell in love with the tune and begged Hal to finish it. Hal, according to his wonderful 1968 book "What the World Needs Now and Other Love Lyrics", went to Burt's bedroom while Burt and Dionne rehearsed in the living room and finished the lyric. The tune was recorded at Bell Sound Studios in Manhattan in November 1963, days after the assassination of JFK, in the same session as Bacharach and David's "Walk On By" and "In the Land of Make Believe". Rumor has it Warwick nailed the tune in only one take. Cilla Black, a top female recording artist in the Uk but little known outside the UK recorded a cover version released in the UK in January 1964 before Scepter licensee Pye records could release Warwick's original and Black's cover became her first number one hit in the UK. Dionne's original version, released two weeks after Cilla's in the UK did make the UK charts at #43. However, in the USA, Black's cover died at Billboard #91. Black remained relatively unknown except to fans in the UK while Warwick went on to achieve worldwide stardom. Anyone Who Had A Heart was Dionne's first international million-seller. Linda Ronstadt covered the tune in 1994 as a tribute to Warwick for the album "Winter Light." Dusty Springfield cut a cover of the tune in 1964 and both Shelby Lynne and Atomic Kitten remakes were released in 2008.
Writes Nick Tosches, the renowned writer, music journalist, novelist, biographer and poet in the January 7, 1972 issue of the rock magazine FUSION; ".getting into Dionne Warwick is like finding buried treasure. The Bacharach/David repertoire which milady chooses to sing is so fascinatingly cynical / fatalistic / stoical / emotional / happy, simultaneously! It's pure emotion. There is a whole lot more to emotion than some rock punk bursting his dexedrine-staved blood vessels by screaming "Baby I need you baby" into a microphone. Dionne Warwick is not a rock and roll singer. She's not a jazz singer either. Rhythm and blues? Nope. A pop singer? No way. Did you ever tongue-kiss with someone who barfed a Singapore Sling bolus into your mouth, and then four years later you're with someone else and you feel good and you realize how beautiful it all was and then it's all melancholy/happiness, sort of? That's the kind of singer Dionne Warwick is. She's beautiful. Dionne, paired with Bacharach's string/horn/reed arrangements, comes up as a lyric mezzo-sopranoid par-excellence, melodious/expressiveness-wise. If you've never gotten into her, you ought to. Get hep to Dionne Warwick. For your own sake."
This song is like a breeze brushing against your cheek
while thinking of someone you love.
This is arguably the greatest soft rock pop song of all time. Period. It has everything--feeling, soul, nuance, build to crescendo, beauty. Hard to categorize fully. The dip in register halfway through is sublime. That sax solo! Bacharach is a genius. Dionne was about 20--amazing! I'm 63 and lived this tune in the day. It still gives me chills--fifty freaking years later.
Anyone who had a heart woulld love this song !
15 people are brain dead, this woman was the best advertisement for burt ever, shes a top class vocalist and a grade 1 lady
Dionne comes from an entirely different breed of vocalists. That's what made Cissy and Whitney so amazing. Vocals like this ran in their family. No one has these chops and phrasing anymore.
Brings tears to my eyes every time I listen to it. Unbelievably touching.
Dionne interprets Bacharach/David songs with pure soul. She is in a class by herself.
Probably the most powerful, majestic broken hearted song of the entire 60s. Almost operatic in its drama and its compositional ingenuity. Bacharach-David were a true legendary writing team and neither were as good writing on their own or with someone else. With singers like Dionne Warwick for their material, they had the perfect situation to create timeless pop music. Also the production on this tune for 1963 standards is spellbinding.
I guess there are 5 people who have never had their heart broken.
When this song came out it was SO different in timing, chords...and that incredible voice and FEELING of Dionne's interpretation of the words.
A CLASSIC of my teenage years. Thank you for this posting.
This is the most beautiful and yet the saddest song I have ever heard.
Absolutely one of THE BEST ballads of all time. The story was told, the hearth was spilled, and the delivery was to beat all.
This song is sooo sad. It can bring you to tears when alone
This song gives me chills everytime I hear it.
Bacharach and Warwick. What a team. What an amazing combination. Together they made beautiful music
I absolutely love this song; it's downright haunting.
I agree with you crockermud, and I'm 68 years old. Dionne Warwick, is a treasure from the 20th Century. But in reality, she is a treasure for all times. She sings so perfect with so little effort, she is just spectacular.
I can't help myself to occasionally comment on how unique this ballad is. Dionne's voice is and always will be one of the best (not to be duplicated), but this story line and the delivery, cuts to the bone every time I hear it.
The purity of her voice is just remarkable to me. She brought such a class to the music scene. She is my stress reliever when i am going through hardships. Notice how she does not need vocal gymnastics to convey the msg in the sing.
Simple but wonderful sax solo at the break.
Using the lower register on the horn after the melody and lyrics reach a crescendo is a touch of brillance.
Another Gem from Bacharach and David.Brilliantly sung by Dionne
RIP Hal David
One of the best love songs ever & sung by one of the Greatest singers.
Love this song . It evokes so many memories!!
was in a relationship with a guy i work with for 2 months. they were the best 2 months of my life, which says alot coming from me a 32 yr old. it was 9/20/10 - 11/23/10 ...it was perfect, i thought he was the one, then just like that he dropped me! Now i have to see him every other day at work and it is heartbreaking!! Anyways seems like Dionne has more songs i can relate to in this manner than anyone else!
She appeared on American Bandstand over a weekend in 1962 singing Don't Make me Over. We girls stood around in a little circle talking about this girl with the lovely name and out-of-sight voice. One girl said "she was so sharp and seemed nervous...so cute" Dionne never disappointed me since that day. She, Hal David and Burt Bacharach were a wonderful group that totally complemented each other. They gave her a lovely start and their talent flourished, as did hers. Thanks!
A true classic of timeless beauty, sung by one of the greats!!!!!
I was so young but never forgot this song!!
This song should be played at full volume with tears streaming down ones sorrow-laiden face ,a bueatiful love song.
Classic!!!
Legend!!!
Truly inspirational!!!!
She is so original, no one can sing so real, so soft, so tender, gentle, so feminine, no wonder Burt and Hal wrote for her, and they all made careers from the relationship. Songs Girls grew up listening to, these messages, back when girls didn't call boys, and lived so much heartbreak inside themselves, wow I remember sitting listening to stacks of her records.
Her voice had such a purity to it that is very much missing in todays singers. Dionne's songs will never grow old to me. Her voice is instantly able to take me to the best places in my mind.
This song popped into my head for no reason.....then I had tol isten to it 100+ times.
The sound of real soul!!! The afro-american sound that cannot be matched by "Noone"!!! PEACE!!!!!! Sonny
one of the greatest vocalist ever..should be manatory for every wanabe singer to listen to her work...when to sing and when to SHUT UP......she always honors the song not herself when she sings...a much needed lesson for most of the "loud mouths" out there ......
Saw her sing this at American University in the ate 60's. She was a perfectionist. And she was perfect
Heart-wrenching song. Only Dionne could sing like that. Don't hear "music" like this nowadays, do we?
Bacharach and David and Warwick ----- Wow!
Still has the capacity to make me verklempt. Timeless. A broken heart knows no generation or era. We all know what it feels like.
Anyone who had a heart would adore this Dionne song and the songstress herself!
The vocals,backing,production,band,writing,enginerring Bert,Hal ,Scepter DAMMMM
This song is timeless - a perfect melding of singer, melody and lyrics. It takes my breath away. The best "rainy day" love lost song ever.
beautiful song. Dionne is such a good vocalist. She is one of the singers whose songs are not played enough on radio
Dionne did this song justice.
R.I.P. Hal David. Thanks for the words to timeless songs like this.
Well said. I am 61 and this is my favorite love song from the 60's. I love the melancholy and pathos of this song - and yes, the sax solo is killer. :-)
When I first hear this way back when, I thought, OMG! I still do. Voice of an angel is an understatement. I'm only glad I lived my youth when I did because of all the awesome music I was lucky enough to enjoy.
Much respect to Ms. Dionne Warwick...she is a trail blazier. Proud of you lady!
when you talk about music with elegance and class...No other singer can beat Dionne Warwick...
The sixties was a very special time in the evolution of the music, that we call "Rock". The quality of the music from that era is self evident in this song. The artist of today have a long way to go to even get close to this quality.
My ABSOLUTE favorite Dionne Warwick & Burt Bacharach collaboration ever! I first heard it in the mid 80's from my friend Jeff, who had a homemade mixed cassette tape of all Dionne songs. Remember listening and loving this haunting tune in the ol' Miss Cougar on those summer Denver afternoons. Good times.
WONDERFUL DIONNE SINGER VERY VERY GOOD THANKS YOU FOR VIDEO
I agree 100 % never has there been more beautiful music than the 50's 60's 70's and 80's, invoking emotion by the melody and the words. Still gives me the chills and I've been listening to this music since I was a child.
My God this is beautiful music nonpareil--Dionne delivered a timeless epic piece here that I've loved so very long.
This song has always had special meaning to me and always will.
Bacharach/David and Warwick, together, made sonic bliss.
This song brought me to tears today.
I am 40 years old but when I first heard this on AM as a kid, I didn't really notice the music or lyrics, just the basic harmony. Now, the background music is as beautiful as Ms. Warwick's singing, as well as the lyrics...
Dionne Warwick is a one of a kind singer.
DIONNNE Warwick is by far the best American singer ever.
Real Music, Real Instruments.....what the SIXTIES are all about...
GREAT MUSIC!!
FOR MY FRENCH FRIENDS: Musique classique d'un chic lady. Dionne est vraiment magnifique. La dernière fois, j'ai ressenti ce genre de chill a été lorsque j'ai entendu pour la première fois cette chanson à l'âge de huit ans. L'un des la plupart définition chansons de 1964.
ENGLISH: Classic music from a classy lady. Dionne is truly magnificent. The last time I felt this kind of chill was when I first heard this song at the age of eight. One of the most defining songs of 1964,
Absolutely beautiful.
As fresh as the day it was made, along with a dozen other Bacharach-David-Warwick collaborations. Brilliant. RIP Hal.
After hearing a few of the covers of this song by other artists, they can't hold a candle to Dionne's version. She so fluid with the lyrics, she sings them so smooth, as where others have to much pronounciation on each syllable. I'm not totally knocking the other versions, but Dionne's is THE version.
For me this song its the most beautiful song ever written. Love Dionne Warwick.
Great music then, and younger ppl don't know how gorgeous the young Dionne was. Even now, as the years have passed she still has a stunning look to her.
Beyonce's got nothing on Dionne. They don't make 'em like this anymore & never will again.
I could not agree with you more. I too am your age and a musician. Tonight I listen to this being cover (very well) on Idol, and I came unglued. Dionne is one in a million.
THIS BEAUTIFUL IS SONG TIMELESS!
WHAT AM I DO !
THE WORDS TO THIS SONG IS ALSO TIMELESS
GREAT SLOW DANCE
One of the most beautiful ballads of all time by the great talent that is DW--it is an amazing work that I've always loved a lot!
I have loved this beautiful voice since I was thirteen years old . I would listen to her and Jerry Butler for hours,
This was back in the time when music was still music. Superb and brilliant. Thanks for the upload!
Her voice was great in 1964 but hearing her sing hearing her sing heartbreaker in the 80s just blows me away.
This is a great song with a bunch of great versions on the web--Dionne, Cilla Black, Dusty Springfield and Petula Clark (in French). Can't decide which I like best, although the sweetness in Dionne's voice makes the ending even more bitter. The chords at the end--tonic alternating with flat submediant, is a huge masterstroke which highlights the dispair at the end.
Mr. Hal David deserves some credit as well. RIP Mr David.........
Can't disagree-Warwicks first three singles were otherworldly
Touching song. I loved it when Luther Vandross sang it. But now he can move aside. I love this version, the original, better. Forever Dionne.
The classiest lady of all times,
beautiful
Dionne W. voice was "all hands down" the best of the best of all time.
Love this song, how sad am I to want to live in the past, when you really don't want to know what the future holds
Her version is so pretty though it gives me chills!!
When I was very young I made a nightmare and it take several days to go away.At this time the radio gave the hit of Dionne Warwick.I should never forget this song.
But today i can appreciate her marvellous voice.
MERCI BIEN..Sa voix restera à jamais un trésor ....un bijou sans prix....
This song makes every hair in my arms stand up!Beautiful song sung by a very beautiful woman
WELL REMEMBERD FROM MY DAYS IN THOSE GREAT 60S TERRIFIC SONG !!!!!
Wonderful song..great!
This song gives me the chills. And Dionne is gorgeous.
Damn what a voice!!!
What a beautiful lady and performer, such a great talent.
some say they love when they rarely do
i love with my whole soul and i regret it but i cant stop
its the best and worst sensation thinking of someone 24/7
findin yourslef crying when you dont really cry..
and finally let all that emotion go to waste
Hall David (Burt's partner) died today.....what amazing writing and, of course performing...I've sung classical music professionally for forty years (I just listened to the entrance of the guests in Tannhauser) and each is amazing and sublime.
i said it before and will say it again. burt and hal"s best.
RIP HAL DAVID!
So beautiful
The year before i was born, memories of my mum will always stay with me she was a fan and still is.
I remember singing this song with tears streaming down my face when i was younger now that i look back i realise i didnt know true love untill now and listening now i can really appreciate it because ive experienced real love and experienced real heart break
love it, I just absolutely love this song!!!!!
Girl on Australia's got talent did an awesome job singing this
For years, whenever given the chance, Dionne would verbally tear up Cilla Black for stealing what I guess she thought should have been HER hit in the U.K. I always wntned to tell her, Dionne, let it go-you're an international superstar, forever linked with the hits of Bacharach-David. Whereas Miss Black was a one hit wonder in N. America (You're my World) and really not well known anywhere other than in the U.K.-not to mention her bizarre, shrill voice leaving people wishing they were deaf.
I love the way Dione adlibs the "yeahs" at the end...
