Why the Gauntlet Starship is in a Class of its Own

- There are quite a few dropships in the Star Wars galaxy, but very few ships can claim to be as dominant as the Mandalorian Kom'rk Class Starfighter/Transport. We take a look at why the Kom'rk Class is in a league of its own.

Mandalorian weapons and ships are well developed, I honestly want them make a capital ship and cruiser class ships.
Well if we go by legends
The sith empire based their ships on Mandalorian ships
And then the republic based theirs on the old sith ships
Then the empire did the same
So technically we have always been seeing Mandalorian ships in a way
they have, a while back, but they had very big ships
They did in legends, they’re as great as you’d expect.
What would be fun as hell to see is the OG mando crusade ships but considering that was old Republic era doubt that will happen
I definitely want the Mandalorian people to come together again and become mighty again in the lore with fleets and big ships. I guess we'll see.
This ship caught my attention since it’s debut in the clones wars. The ability to swoop in, maneuver mid air drop off mandalorians from high altitude. Remarkable.
Very remarkable.
Not it’s debut, Kom’rk ships are old
exactly
Great list. Also, as a former paratrooper... yes! People rarely realize why us sky soldiers rarely retreat... where would we go? Retreating in our deployments could well mean fighting our way back to the front line. I think the Firespray deserves a place on this list.
Respect for your service
Thank you soldier!
The Firespray backstory hasn’t been made canon (that I know of) so we don’t know what is going to follow it from legends, but in some legends the Fett Firespray Slave 1 may have been _the_ prototype. If memory serves it was supposed to be a patrol/gunship for planetary defense and system/sector law enforcement.
@@jeffreycarman2185 Thank you! I take in a LOT of lore, but still probably miss 30% or more...
I absolutely love that the Star Wars universe is that vast.
Appreciate your insights.

@@shmeeve Do you respect all militants? How do you know Karl is your ally?
The Gauntlet design is definitely my favourite amongst this list.
Watching it land is literally thrilling-so graceful yet so imposing
They did the live action version justice. The sunset shot going after the raptor really got me.
I really love that your videos are ABOUT Star Wars, and not just endless diatribes about Kathleen Kennedy or whatever drama is going on. I’m sure that like all of us you have opinions on that stuff. So many of these SW content creators are just farming angst for clicks/ad revenue. It’s just so exhausting. Thanks for the refreshing videos.
Thank you i agree i dont need another update on how f star wars which we all know
Amen 90% star wars content makers just bash star wars the whole video
It’s called grifting, same tactic used to divide in politics
This is where this channel shines.
This is the way
The Imperial Navy's Sentinel-Class assault ship should have a honourable mention here. It's a derivative of the Lambda-Class shuttle, but about twice the length, featuring a huge troop bay, capable of deploying an entire Stormtrooper platoon and then providing them with heavy fire support. The Sentinel is an absolute beast of a dropship
Agreed.
The Gauntlet and Sentinal are sharing the first spot , Laat. Is 2nd only because it's smaller or no hyperduve equipped armed space variant (there is an unarmed one)
in a galaxy full of cool but impractical designs, the gauntlet is so refreshing. you have to appreciate just how ridiculously well designed it is. the wings also provide a very nice in atmosphere advantage.
I got a lego gauntlet a long time ago from my aunt as a birthday present. I was so happy when the Lego version was actually able to rotates its wings 360 and land just like in the show.
That’s pretty cool
You missed an interesting detail of the Kom’rk: it comes in three different sizes. The Clone Wars version is the 60m length you mentioned, but the Rebels version is canonically around 50m and the Mandalorian version appears to be no bigger than about 30-35m. You can really tell in the scene with the Mandalorian fleet at the end of S3E6. There are a couple of 60m Gozantis surrounded by a bunch of Gauntlets, and they definitely aren’t as tall as the Gozantis are long. Or compare it to the N1, it isn’t more than 2-2.5 times as long as that ship.
There is another reason the gauntlet class is a favorite of Mandalorians. That is the wings can be used as impromptu defensive walls for camps and fortifications. This was a favorite for death watch when they set up camp.
I think the hmp droid gunship should get a mention as well. Although it only carries droids, it was very effective at this. It was shielded, very fast and carried tons of weaponry.
Very true. It had that same type of drop-insertion (although not to the same extend as the gauntlet), was heavily armed and modular, ray shielded, and was fast.
You could call those droid-mandos
The Gauntlet class has always been my favorite ship in that size/category. I'm just glad it's finally getting it's time to shine in live action. Likewise, Fangs are probably my favorite small fighter, now we just need to see a couple of those on screen sometime.
I'm hoping that Bo-Katan's next step is to find Fin Rau and recruit the protectors.
@@user-wu6kj3yk3i That'd be cool, but as far as I recall Rau was the only Protector left the last we saw of him. He'd have had to have done some recruiting, which is certainly possible.
And an update after this latest episode: we got Fang fighters. They weren't exactly featured, but they were there. Curious about how much screen time they'll get in the space battle during the finale.
@@cd5sircoupe yeah it looks like we didn’t get a look at the whole fleet in the previous episode as there were clearly more than 2 gozanti cruisers as well
@@user-wu6kj3yk3i On top of that, it looks like a portion of the fleet split between leaving Nevarro & arriving at Mandalore. There's at least one Gozanti & several Gauntlets that were missing. I think there were like 5 Gozantis at Nevarro and 4 at Mandalore.
Edit: random thought here, whatever happened to all those rifles & munitions that were on board the Gozanti in The Heiress episode? They made a point to mention how those arms would help their militia / war effort to retake Mandalore right? We've only seen the Nite Owls mostly using their hand guns.
When it come to air dropped soldiers I think the future is probably gonna be what we see in Halo with the ODST drop pods which are able to drop a single soldier rapidly onto the field without need of a dropship except in the case of emergancy evacuation.
like the intro of TF|2?
Something so insanely expensive and yet you only deliver one Soldier.
@Nobleman uh... do you even remember what the O stands for?
Everything _about_ that would be "expensive", _regardless!_
@@nobleman9393 Orbitaly Dropped Shock Troopers insert in Single Occupant Exoatmospheric Insertion Vehicle. Those standard humans can survive a fall from space right onto enemy armour, all that thanks to the relatively cheap for the task SOEIV. Feet first into hell, helljumper.
@@robinst-pierre9600 Dropping your troops directly onto enemy is the fastest way to lose those troops.
2:00 one of my favorite quotes from the Band of Brothers mini-series has always been "We're paratroopers, we're meant to be surrounded"
I love this ship design , I'm so glad they showed troop insertion from one this season. This and Slave 1 are probably my favorite ships in starwars. Great video
I like this setting with the green chair, it's nice.
Straight swag
This is one of my favorite ships, certainly stands out!
The gauntlet is easily my favorite ship in Star Wars. As a helicopter gunship fanatic, I just love how it is great for ground assaults, gunship roles, and is solid at air to air combat similar to the Apache helicopter. It is just incredible. (Obviously my second favorite is the LAAT)
I am SO GLAD this ship is getting more attention, its been my favourite star wars ship as long as i can remember!!!
I love the U wing. I remember that it also can 'drop' its infantry, although it does it a lot closer to the ground.
As retired Airborne 11B, I approve this messsage.
Smoove and thorough as per usual. Great presentation.
Aside from the OG Sith Starfighter and All Imperial Craft The Gauntlet is one of my favourite ships outside starships in the entire starwars universe. Considering clone ships kinda class as Imperial they do also count,
I love these info vids you make Ner'Vod. Keep it up?
The Gauntlet is my favourite too, and that engine sound is so good.
This was an entertaining segment. Thanks, Alan.
Very nice over view of combat and tactics
There are troop transports (no to very light weaonry) and then there are infantry fighting vehicles. Both transport troops but only one stays to fight. The Mandalorian craft is NOT a troop transport, it is an IFV designed to ferry troops AND provide close combat support of those troops (some of the other ships you mentioned are also closer to IFV's than transports as well).
Another great video your the best dude !!
I don’t understand why in the mandalorian they haven’t shown the gauntlet do the spinning wings thing. It’s my favorite part of the design and why I like the ship so much
Bo-Katan did a sweet maneuver with 1 wing up to spin around though which was cool and had never been shown before, at least to my recollection. When I saw that I was like "Woah! I didn't know it could do that!"
@@Brinelious yeah that was cool! But I still want them to do the full spinning
Personally I think that mando should had a U-wing for his new ship, you can convert it to be just big enough to be a mobile base and home while been small enough to be solo piloted and to not get too meny eyes on you.
@Generation Tech: Just a quick reminder: @6:58 the first order AAL IS equipped with a Hyperdrive. it's used throughout the resistance show. One example is season 2 episode 18 @9:35
Glad we are seeing it so much
awesome summary!
My 3 favorite of your selection there Alan are the Komr'k Class, the U-Wing, and the TIE Reaper.
All 3 are highly modifiable.
That wingback chair sure looks comfy.
Great vid GenTech, a fascinating look at the gauntlet. My favorite troop transport will always the LAAT Gunship, although the U-wing takes a very close second place.
U wing is an epic ship wish it got more screentime
Love the Civ 6 reference in the beginning of the video.
Honorable mention to the Sentinel class assault lander and the ATR Telgorn Assault transport of the Imperial Navy. The former I think was first introduced in the West End Games Sourcebook for SWRPG, and the Latter came during the LucasArts X-wing and TIE PC games, as a larger more intimidating ship than the TRN stormtrooper transport.
Of course there was also the massive AT-AT landing barges, and the HAV-R Floating fortresses... but those are in another category altogether.
You're my favorite generation Tech host semper fi
Can’t get enough of the Gauntlet! This video explains the layout a little better, but it is way bigger than I thought
That’s it lads, Rock and Stone!
The company appreciates your work miner.
Did i hear a rock and stone?
You starting to give " the most mysterious man in the world vibes. Dope 👌😎
THANKS ALAN --- I AGREE WITH YOU THAT SHIP IS AWESOME IT'S SHEILDING SYSTEM IS REALLY GOOD ALSO AS I'VE SEEN IN THE MANDALORIAN SERIES
The laat is my favourite ship in any form of media. I love it
I love the Ko'merk and the Tie Reaper the most
the AAL transporter looking more like a DR-4 Vikings from starship troppers, with the same whay they deploy troops. i love the cormac, i love the look and the way it can be used
The U wing and gauntlets are my favorite troop transports
That thing is bigger than the Ghost (VCX-100), which itself is bigger than the Falcon (YT-1300).
Kinda wish we got to see the deadly beast that is the Fang fighter on the Mandalorian
Dude, the ability to infil and exfil two squads of heavy infantry onto the battlefield without significant risk from ground fire is incredible. It means that you can control the pace of battle, the location of battle, and fix and maneuver on the enemy in a way that other enemies could never match and the U.S. military would drool over.
Love your videos
Correct me if I'm wrong. Back in Rebel when they trying to entered that space area/ route. They were stop and attacked by that Mandalorian that was under the Emprie rule (he hurt Hera and Sabine wanted revenge by killing him but Kanan was oppose to it as it was the same Mando that saved him and his master back in the Clone Wars day). They had Gaunlet like ships too but weren't they were smaller? Also they rotate like the B Wing althought I think the Guantley can do that too but not seen alot in The Mandalorian?
Fang fighters. Basically small snub fighters like A Wing, TIE, etc. Supposedly we’ll see them in Mando Season 3
@@DarthMalaks_Missing_Lower_Jaw Ok thanks! I always wonder what they were called and I was too lazy to check on Wookipedia. They look similar to the Guantlet but smaller since it only had room for one pliot.
The Gauntlet and the Firespray. Mandalmotors did something crazy well.
While I fully admit that the Gauntlet is a premiere drop ship, I still favor the U-Wing. If you have any troops to drop that aren’t heavily armored, jetpack-equipped Mandos, a U-Wing is the better choice.
It's almost like ships are designed around the troops they are deploying...
@@jt5765 True. I was merely stating that for me the best “all-purpose,” if you will, drop ship would be the U-Wing. For a Mando force, I would absolutely take a Gauntlet, but unless I needed massive volume of troops dropped at once, I would default to the U-Wing.
Good video. The best 'Drop ship' is the TIE Bomber (or Punisher) the one that 'drops' fusion bombs-not troops-glassing most of the surface into trinitite on an otherwise badass Mandalor and disrupting the magnetic field around the planet, making it impossible to communicate with anyone out of atmosphere, of which is left with 42 troops to drop out of the Gauntlet starships.
Id say they are the most bad ass ships and they fit the Mandalorian culture, it says a lot about them and there ships.....
A gauntlet fighter with Umbaran Flight technology.
The way you sit in that chair at the end is anyone getting Austin Powers super villain feeling?😂😂
Only learned about this ship mostly through rebels. Ngl Ezra had a pretty badass personal craft after he took it from maul, I'd like him to get it back. Would be great to see him as this Jedi vigilante hunting imperials with this starship as his signature.
Glad to see the Reaper getting some love. I hope we'll see get used more then just a fly by in the distance like in Andor.
May the force be with you
Probably my favorite ship in star wars! Do you want to fight or drop off troops? Yes
No Razor Crest? We haven't seen it used in that way, and was apparently a patrol or interdiction ship. I think it would be great as a drop ship.
The gauntlet fighter is definitely one of my fav sw ship and if I could have any one ship as my mobile home in the star wars universe I'd pick a gauntlet the trooper bay could definitely be modified into a good amount of living space plus some room for cargo.
I gotta say I fell in love with the Tie Reaper as soon as I seen it. It's only downfall is its under gunned. But being a Tie variant I feel like there's alot of modularity that they could easily add quality additions and make it a juggernaut. Shields are good, class 1 hyper drive and enough floor space to haul on too. I wished Mando got one of these instead of the N-1 (obviously they're later in the time line). Still could live on it and bounty hunt and haul. Peli could have sourced and upgraded it along with other Tie parts.
Story reason given for him wanting ships as old as the N1 is that Pre-Empire ships weren't required to have a beacon. Funny enough the Millennium Falcon also falls into that camp being from before the rise of the Empire. That fact was mentioned in the BoBF episode when he got the N1.
This is the way!
I like the U wing. But the Gauntlet does have its advantages. Like a tail gunner. I'm going to have to get some new books about Star Wars ships.
Nice video also nice new chair
Pelican and it's was the best plane for dropping into a landing zone I've seen in years. Never understood why they didn't go forward with it. It worked well with heavy armor and infantry. Pelican was a plane that would fly 10 - 20 ft above an area and drop a sled held together with rubber band. Force divided by time equals 0, so it would leave most non sensitive equipment intact.
To add it is most likely every mandolorian would have skills in ship maintenance, so you have a team that can do some of the repairs/tasks to maintain the vehicle
As an old paratrooper and sci-fi nerd I've actually thought about this topic a lot and I've come to very similar conclusions. I am a lil surprised you didn't even mention th ODSTs from Halo though. THAT'S the future of rapid troop deployment, especially for special forces types
I personally love this ship and would love to see one modified into a bounty hunter's ship. For me, part of that means taking out the trooper drop and sealing the aft so it doesn't open which means it would no longer be a troop transport but bounty hunters don't normally work in teams anyways so all good there.
The gauntlet might be my favorite star wars ship of all time. its very close to the tie interceptor
You had me as soon as you threw down the Gauntlet. Ha! I kill me!
Imagine a destroyer version of the Komm'rk; 800 meter long, armed with beam lasers and the same rotating wing structure.
The U wing was designed for jet pack assault drops, as it cam open up the back & the sides as well during flight. The rebels simply lacked jet pack commandos to use it this way.
Wondering if you could do a video on the fang fighter
Airborne soldiers do not fear death in battle, because they’re just happy they didn’t die in the air.
the gauntlet is pretty sick but im always leaning towards the LAAT. it can be modified for carying troops, tanks, has a ton of fire power and with some modification you can install a hyperdrive. its the bread and butter of star wars vehichles great video alan
I really wan to see how big can bokoton fleet gets and will they have add more imperial class or will other mandalorian tribes bring there own ships
By far had overtaken my heart as my favorite ship in starwars back since the clone wars first aired
Great video
Gauntlet...hands down....Clone transport requires a large crew to bring to battle where as the Gauntlet can get away with 2 or 3 and be deadly
They have the coolest fighters to
I'm hoping Dinn will get one from Bo-katan, It'll probably suit him better than the N-1 he currently has.
Knowing how the show is going he will likely just give her the N1
No he needs a ship big enough to have a hangar for the N1. Maybe a small transport with a hangar modification. I'd like to see him with his own crew of friends he's met along the way.
Mando, Grogu, Pelli, Carson, Cara, Cobb, IG-11, Mayfeld & maybe Omega too would be 👌
I'd suggest that the Mandalorians' GDP isn't just mostly spent on military defense, it's mostly generated by military production (both hardware and personnel).
Have you done a episode on saobath squadron and its hex weapons?
I would want one of every gunship in this video, especially the gauntlet.
I am technically a U-Wing fan. But only after some modifications. lengthening the main body pod by 10 meters. Adding an engineer as the 5th crew member. Then finally added a dorsal twin laser turret. That is my idea for a U-73A Nomad U-wing that would be built in the Mandalorian era.
The fighter ships in star wars rebels were awesome as well
My favorite transport in SW is the LAAT Gunship. If it just had shields it be 100% the best transport. In .my opinion.
My favorite? I'm a fan of the TIE Reaper.
What about the droid gunships, Alan? What do you think of it?
The simplest solution to protecting troops being deployed from a drop ship is to have top mounted wings, with folding wingtips. When landing, or doing a low hover, the troops exit from both sides of the landing craft. The overhead wings protect them from being attacked from above, while the wing tips fold down and provide direct cover from the sides. The troops can then move forward or backwards - or in both directions - to spread out and fight the enemy. I'd add a couple of those small drop down anti-personal lasers like the Millennium Falcon had, one front mounted, one rearwards, to provide low level defensive fire to protect your troops.
A simple and easy design, giving you four different deployment options when landing your troops. The folding wingtips are a bonus, as the ship can fold them up prior to landing on a carrier or transport ship, leaving room for more of them.
I'm familiar with a ship that almost perfectly matches this description, the Esperia Prowler, a human copy of a Tevarin Landing ship in the Star Citizen game setting. It has high mounted wings while in landing config a portion of the wingtip forms a wall between the exit doors, which line the side of the ship, and opposing forces.
Interesting.
The laat can also do a hot drop of at-rt's and deploy z series speeders
